- Bernard Purdie is a drummer’s drummer for sure and his famous Shuffle has inspired countless musicians on the planet. This is my humble tribute to the ‘Purdie Shuffle’ as celebrated on one of my favourite Steely Dan tracks. I recommend to watch Bernard’s drum lesson on ‘Drumeo’: • The Purdie Shuffle | B...

Jesus wept, this takes some nerve. Becker and Fagan were renowned for being uber fussy over the work that their session players did.
I think you could have easily played this live with Steely Dan. That's a compliment if ever I heard one. But you've done the work and everyone can see how talented you are.
Keep it up kid.
That's right, it takes some balls to do this. Oh, yeah. Some ovaries? It takes some kind of big ovaries to do this stuff.
Purdie Shuffle is on point. Love to see younger generation play timeless music.
WOW, perfect as always...greatest BAREFOOT DRUMMER ever....
What class you showed doing such a beautiful classic song.
Very impressive Sina.
Rock, pop, classical, hard rock .... and now jazz-rock. No matter what music you play, it's fantastic to watch you drumming.
Uwe, I could not agree more!!
Hey Sina, excellent job, just fantastic. Great feel, great sound. I was a professional drummer for 28 years and I am truly impressed. I taught my granddaughter Taylor to drum when she was 14 and the resemblance of you two is uncanny. You could be twins. I used to tell her to keep her shoes on but she would always drum barefoot . She said she could get the feel and grip better. Keep up the great work . You've got the Purdie shuffle down pat, beautifully done. A lot of drummers have trouble with that one. Very, very well done. Incredible sound too! Ron from Canada.
That’s a great Purdue Shuffle! You done the master an awesome tribute!
Grace, beauty and class all captured here. Another fine choice to add to your lengthy resume of many songs & genres. Such a joy to watch you get into and groove to a tune! Steely Dan's is known for their high quality mixes and your Dad certainly got it right here. This sounds soooo great cranked up to 11! So so smooth! This will be ringing in my ears all day. Thanks Sina!
Wow Steve, you said what i wanted to but with fewer words..
OMG you are so wanderful at doing these covers. I loved this cover almost as much as much as the originals. It's not always about the hard driving drums and speed of the playing. This was awesome. Thank you!
After last week's ultra-fast piece (Burn by Deep Purple) here's something in a relaxed cheerful summery interpretation that really gets me in a positive mood. We often take the drums for granted but Sina shows it really contributes to the mood of the music!
(Playing barefoot certainly helps ... mood-wise.)
Ahhhhhh....Steely Dan. I ask ya, does it get any better than this? Nice to come home to, Sina! Thanks! :)
No doubt
Some may say this shuffle is not that hard to play, but to play it with the "Lazy", Soulful feeling that you do is a great talent. Excellent rendition of a track I have been listening to for over 40yrs. Bernard would be proud.
From rock and heavy metal to the blues and jazz. Pure blissful listening pleasure. You've done it again.
Been listening all along, but had to comment today. I love your Berndard Purdie tribute. The shuffle and the love that you've put into this drum track is so very, very beautiful. Thank you for sharing all of your talents and efforts with us. A 'hi' to Milena, your dad and all of those that contribute to your musical dream. Peace.
Awesome that you did a great Tribute you Steely Dan. You were raised well. Thank you for this!
Wow, I love it! Steely Dan is possibly my favorite band ever, and you totally nailed the "Purdie Shuffle". Awesome stuff:)
Lets call it the Sina Barefoot Shuffle!Great tribute to a true drumming legend! The Purdie Shuffle was Drumming 101 in school!
scott FabT-Birds79
Wow scott, I've been wondering about Fab-T-Birds that you go by. Just found out , that is awesome you played with them, was that in 79? one other question "Is she tough enough " Sina. I rocked with you'ens. I suspected this with your drum knowledge.
Got to love the Dan jazz funk sound. Late night sounds
It’s very nice that at the end of the track you show how it’s done. You surprise us time and again by your wide variety of styles. Yes, of course Why not try Steely Dan ?, who used the best of studio drummers to make their records perfect! Ask for Sina next time and save a lot of time and money 😊 For me, this was a total knockout. Not just the hits and clicks and shuffle is perfect, but so is the respective volume of the different parts and of the drum set. And the relaxed and unhurried attitude is a big plus, too..That’s professional, indeed.
Steely Dan ... wow, that's old school. Very cool.
Heh heh, and I thought she'd never be going back.
Jeff England yesterday is old and gone.
Jeff England Steely Dan is simply just GOOD MUSIC.
mark rigsby bullshit.
@@jongroubert4203 Ha, good one. I wish she would do, My Old School. Also, Aja, Hey Nineteen, Any Major Dude, Peg, Royal Scam, etc. Yes, I am a huge Steely Dan fan. Loved this, Home at Last. It made me feel, 'at home'. At last! 😎
First off...Shame on the haters who disliked this Awesome Drum Cover! All the Elements of Bernard Purdie's Original Work are here...the Shuffle...the Halftime...the Ghost Notes on the Snare...the Open/Close Hi-Hat Sizzle Accents on the Chorus...Quarter-Note Triplet Stops...Funky Bass Drum Kicks...the Fills...the Ride Bell on the Ending. Excellent Work Sina! Bernard Purdie would be proud of this Drum Cover! It's simply one of the Top Drum Covers of "Home At Last" on RUclips if not the Best! Your Technique is smooth and your Drums sound great! Keep playing...
There are men who fear and hate women more than they love drumming; it’s their embuggerance.
I think Purdue was playing a china on the outro. Is anyone agree?
i love the care you take on each note/hit. Lingering and waiting for each touch - Especially on cymbal. Steely Dan, as a collective is known for the the care taken in each moment and half beat of every song. Well done and captured I thought.
Absolutely fantastic. I am always impressed when I hear ur stuff Sina! Steely Dan is a favorite of mine and Home At Last is a great song. I truly appreciate ur talents and ur covering a lot of great music from the 70's and early 80's. Please do more more Steely Dan. Thank you and keep em coming.
This takes me back, Sina. You are so right about Purdie, he influenced so many and you did a fabulous interpretation on this drum cover of 'Home at Last!' Very many drummers these days tend to play forte on up, but your dynamic range was most evident and rewarding and I loved your work on the hat as we don't see it often featured so prominently. Excellent cover, that was like a time machine!
Steely Dan too? You really played this so well, soft without overpowering already soft music! I doesn’t surprise me, I don’t think there is ANY song you don’t make just a little better!
I love it! I love R&B. Purdie had very precise timing doing this, just like you did, Sina. You are certainly extraordinary!!!
One of the reasons that made me subscribed to this channel is the many styles you play. You can go from Metallica to Steely Dan, or from Tool to Henry Mancini. And shine in each and every one of them! Please, make my wish come true and do the iconic Santana’s Soul Sacrifice!
Bernard should be proud of your masterful take on the Purdie Shuffle. Well done.
Nothing but class all the way with Sina! Wow this is great! Thank you. I am looking forward to what is to come next week even more!!! I know its something amazing!!! Loving our diversity so much Sina. You truly are phenomenal
Oh the beauty of simplicity in the complex. In there rest the beauty of of very capable hands of an artist.
LovE Steely Dan and your skills are so free flowing and natural ~~~~ I was just wondering to myself this morning if you had tried this band and typed in Sina playing Steely Dan and sure enough it pops right up! NOTHING surprises me anymore.....Nice groove ~~
Hooray! It's FRIDAY! Time to listen to new Sina's covers :)
Kate Kuziakina _she has an examination next week, thumb for her, ♾
Kate Kuziakina Shouldn't we be listening to Kate covers also?
Kate Kuziakina Amen
If it's for drums, she's going to ace it.
Awesome! It took me back. Pleasing to the ear. I saw them back in '75 when I was stationed in Germany. Thanks for bringing this to us. You are a true artist.
Beautiful song by a tragically under-rated group. As a long-time fan of Steely Dan, your tribute was flawless. Thanks for another great cover to end the week!
Thanks for selecting such a great song. Love their harmonies and brass. Darn, I wish we had more of this in pop music today. Somebody's got to keep it alive and well. Bruno can only do so much, so it's up to cover artists to feature the good stuff.
Wow, Sina, in this cover you play so perfectly on the beat. You’ve such a great feel for whatever you’re playing. Your ability to capture nuance is amazing.
I’d love to hear a cover of Aja from this album or the tune Pools from Steps Ahead. Thanks for sharing your talent with us.
Only a steely-nerved drummer would take on Bernie. How'd she do?
"Home at Last" was written by Walter Becker and Donald Fagen. It's track 5 of the album 'Aja' which was recorded during the first half of 1977 and released on Sept 23, 1977. Although three other songs, "Peg", "Deacon Blues" and "Josie", were released as singles, this track wasn't so its chart history is that of the album - 'Aja' peaked at #3 on Oct 22, 1977 with a total of 60 weeks on the Billboard 200 chart.
Given Becker and Fagen's fondness of using cultural and literary references, often arcane, in their lyrics, most critics believe the song is based on Homer's epic poem "The Odyssey" in which Ulysses struggles to return home. Some disagree citing the first lines "I know this super highway, this bright familiar sun" and feel the song is about Becker and Fagen wishing to leave Los Angeles, where they'd moved in 1971 and formed Steely Dan, and return to their native New York - which they did in 1978. It's not unusual for Steely Dan lyrics to be rather obscure and have multiple or parallel meanings. The mention of the Greek wine retsina, which has been made for 2000 years, could tip the balance one way or the other. Your choice, or both! :D
Having ceased touring in mid-1974, Steely Dan became just Becker and Fagen and each subsequent album featured a who's who of top-notch session musicians. "Home at Last" has Donald Fagen on vocals and synthesizer, Victor Feldman on piano and vibraphone, and Larry Carlton on guitar - however, Walter Becker plays the guitar solo. The rhythm section is dual living legends Chuck Rainey on bass and Bernard Purdie on drums.
Purdie has done session work for many major artists like James Brown, Jeff Beck, Miles Davis, The Rolling Stones, Al Kooper, Larry Coryell, B.B. King, and Joe Cocker. He was Aretha Franklin's musical director for five years and played on three of her albums. He's also on three Steely Dan albums - 'The Royal Scam', 'Aja', and 'Gaucho'. He's considered to be a groove drummer with a signature sixteenth note hi-hat lick. He frequently fuses influences like swing, funk and blues. His "Half-time Shuffle" is a variation with ghost note snare hits and it inspired a number of drummers including Jeff Porcaro who incorporated it into his "Rosanna Shuffle" for Toto. Sina already mastered Porcaro's version. Regular visitors to this channel know there is a cover of "Rosanna" as well as a "Rosanna" drum tutorial in Sina's previous videos.
There, you see? It didn't take a steely-nerved drummer at all. Just a very talented one!
Juliet P., yes Sina did very well and very precisely, just like in her tutorials and in "Rosanna". Again I must say what a wonderful commentary you've given us this Friday - time signatures I can barely comprehend, esoteric insight and parallelisms - I feel like a 9-year old past his bedtime again and I'm enjoying every minute of it :)
I see what you did there :-)
Thanks.
.
Juliet P. How'd she do? Looking for help I found _breathtaking, awe-inspiring, magnificent, wonderful, amazing, stunning, staggering, imposing, stirring, impressive; formidable, fearsome,mind-boggling, mind-blowing, jaw-dropping, excellent, marvelous; wondrous._
However I will simply say *_"Sina nailed it!"_* Happy TGIF to you Juliet and have a sunny weekend.
Fagan's 'characters' rarely are biographical (unless he actually is a pedophile drug addict terrorist freak), but sometimes they probably have biographical elements. The chorus of course refers to the siren song that lured sailors to the rocks and the destruction of their ship--easily translatable to any fem-fatale the character might have encountered. To keep from being so lured, Odysseus is tied to the mast. More generally Odysseus' journey is the 'journey of the hero' which is a staple throughout western literature since obviously ancient times right through to the modern era. It culminates with the passage of the hero through numerous trials and his safe return to home and hearth. I always took this lyrics as a Fagan character empathizing with the trials and tribulations of Odysseus. In all likelihood it's about going on a long tour with the band. But of course it's left open, which is the mark of a good lyric. That way it may be about a long tour with the band, but it also works for whatever it conjures for the listener given their experiences.
I'd like to hear Sina tackle the Steve Gadd solo on Aja
Aaaaah I love this! It sounds incredibly good! Listened to it twice. Once without and once with earphones and it sounds so good! Love this Sina! ♥️🎶🎧
Oh I just quickly have to add: you always play with such ease! You play like it’s the simplest thing on earth and I love that! ♥️
Very perceptive Mayte.. Sina is exceptional in all ares of drumming
So true, Sina has the groove to maintain her smooth flow even when working through very difficult skills. I'd love to see you perform with 'Team Sina' one of these days, Ms. Mayte...wouldn't that be something?!
So would I Jason... hopefully some day
Jason Meinhart I’d absolutely love to!! 😍
What a pleasure to listen to this piece after a busy week, Thank you Sina and the team x
I two years out of High School when this song came out. Great job Sina! Thank You!!
Sorry I left out the word "was". They didn't teach that word at my school. I have the Aja album and just might have to play it today!
Shuffling sina. Steely Dan, quite simply amazing. Beatles..#1, steely a close second.
Aahhhhh, my favorite Steely Dan Song! It's rare to find good covers of them. This is great, Sina. Greetings from Brazil.
This is so SICK! In a good way of course...
Nice!!! Bernard Purdie Shuffle!!!
Thanks for the good feeling !!! Love the way you drum
Loving that shuffle! Again masterfully played!
Love you Sina! I'm thinking DAD has a lot of influence in your talents and successes from seeing you playing those classic tunes! Here's to both of you! I just tripped over your videos and have been "bedazzled" for the last few hours... You've inspired a 56 yr old to pull out his drums from under the dust and give them renewed life! An uncle of the beatles days inspired my brother & I to take up playing. I've never taken lessons and can do a good percentage of your moves, but your talent and love of drums inspires me to want to practice some of the fundamentals and improve what I know. Not bad when someone my age would like you as a teacher...! Thanks so much for the inspiration!!! I'm planning on setting up in the basement and hooking videos, including yours, up to the stereo upstairs. That way, my my wife will hear the whole song and not just the drumming. We may get along that way!...
Thanks for the videos and everyone involved. The talent is as great as the artists of those eras! Sincerely - from Winnipeg Canada
I literally love this.👏🏻👏🏻 !!
Performance ART. WOW! Thank you for Fridays.
Hi Sina, You keep coming up with these fantastic covers. I love Steely Dan. they were quite commercial in the early days songs like Rikki Don't Loose that Number and Do It Again Then sort of switched to more jazz based songs terrific band Thanks so much for covering another one of my favorite songs by one of my favorite bands. well done exceptional playing as always.
Sina, Deine musikalische Vielfalt ist einfach phänomenal. Das ist, was mir an Deiner Musik so gefällt...
Sina you've got a phenomenal musical diversity. That is, what I like about your music
Love your drum cover of this wonderful Dan song! RIP Walter Becker.
Jazzy and groovy. Close ypur eyes and go with the flow. It looks easy but it is not. You can hear the melody in the drumming. Very good performed Sina! I ❤ it!
P.S. My two Sina-Drums T-shirts arrived today! I am ready for the summer!
How cool!!!
And the horns of course. It’s just such a great song! And you play it beautifully Sina.
Your versatility is absolutely amazing.... I adore listening to you play. Thank you for 6 minutes of pure joy.
Wow, wow wow....your pushing the beat forward with the bass is nothing short of amazing. Just wow...
I've watched this video like 6 times over the past couple of months! So good!
Steely Dan wanted drum tracks that were inspired. This is one of the best and this cover is excellent. Very talented young lady!
Excellent! Sina, you make my Fridays! Thank you!☺
You certainly distinguish yourself not only with your obvious talent, but you have such diversity and range that so few seem to capture! You make the technical precision of your renditions of various styles and artists seem so easy! Sina, you are truly a gifted musician! Thank you for brightening our Friday!
Wonderful to see you playing some Jazz & R&B. A few of rock's finest drummers studied the style and tempo of the great Jazz percussion artists. You style is really developing into something special.
Always amazing Sina
one of my all time favorite songs!!! Great job! Thanks!!!
All of your playing is tremendous, but your hi-hat work is simply exquisite.
Thank you SINA for all you do, rock on.
Super Performance. Hard work for our refreshment. Thank SINA for doing this for us. It's wonderful. :)) ♥♥♥
One of my favorite bands of all time and you just killed it!! I'm hooked.
Another fantastic cover. Another great choice in artists. You've become so good that it's getting harder to outdo yourself each week. But you're brilliance always shines. Keep rockin' Sina!!!
Oh my. Loved it.
Hay Sina, thank you for the beautiful video. I'm also a big fan of Steely Dan but your performance is awesome. Greetings from Amsterdam.
OMG! OMG! OMG! I am freaking out right now Sina. That was beautiful! It's also one of my favorite tracks for their best record. You are like the perfect storm girl. You have all the skills in your toolbox.
love your feel...that is so important to any good drumming. you put your whole body, mind and soul into every video....very nice. I been drumming for 50 years...feel is key. thanks for your tremendous talent shared.
I sincerely respect and honor your reply. I am of German descent but have never lived there to experience how cold your winter is. We are almost in mid-winter here in SA and we are experiencing min of 6C and max of 25C. The worst we get here is min -4C in winter. Hence my term for 'heaters' was intended to imply these little portable plug-in oil fin units that WE use to place in the area that we are utilising when we require some warmth before climbing into bed. Please excuse my ignorance of circumstances there, and we will enjoy the casual barefoot look during your summer time. I wish to assume that the more frequent barefoot approach we see lately was influenced a little by our comments - thank you. Much appreciated. Sina is a talented and lovely child and we wish her only the best of care, much love and every success. Always. d
Sina your attention to symbol work and your ability to know when to play soft and hard for effect in general are exceptional!!!
Beautiful, thanks! I love Steely Dan💪👍👏👏👏👏👏👏
As always, great job. Sina, you never stop surprising me with new styles and types of music you cover. Very impressed. Can't wait for next weeks..
One of my favorite Steely Dan songs. Thanks Sina!
Love this song, and you are right on top of it !
In addition to the drums I love the guitar in this song especially towards the end.
Love to listen and watch your laid-back, easygoing drumming to this super cool song.
the same procedure as every Friday ...... again a really nice video of Sina ! Great !
I'm second! This girl is a true professional! A percussionist! Love ya Sina👍👍👍👍👍👍
Effortlessly superb...one of my all time Steely Dan’s song...Sweet!
The melancholy sound of Steely Dan. The falling out of love period lasted several years, thanks for the memories.
Man oh man, that's a joy to listen to (and watch).
Amazing performance! One of my favorite bands and songs! 🥁💓
Another great performance. Love your choice of songs too! Thanks for sharing your talent with us
Excellent as always!
I love the sound of deep tuned drums and I love shuffle. So, this was the perfect entrance to a loveley weekend. Thanks :-)
Simply excellent. I prefer your playing on these kinds of tunes, jazzy, touchy, feely pieces.
Sina, you have introduced me to a great musician whose work I knew, but whose name I did not. I've now watched two different videos of Mr. Purdie. What an amazing guy! He's worked with all of the greats in the last half century, from Aretha to Steely Dan to You-name-it -- has appeared on over four *thousand* albums -- whew! The Purdie Shuffle originated with him, then passed through Bonham to Porcaro, with each of those great drummers adding his own unique spin to it. I love the way Purdie can almost effortlessly cook along even while chatting to his audience, morphing from one mood and style to another without missing a beat. "Always know where the ONE is." Amazing.
I was inspired to check back into my Steely Dan records to figure out which cuts he played on (besides this one) and was astonished to see how many legendary drummers they used: Purdie, Porcaro, Gadd, Keltner... sometimes all on the same record! I suppose they chose the one whose style best fit the particular song. I can imagine every great rock musician wanted to play with Becker and Fagan, a bit like every actor in Hollywood wanted to play a murderer on "Columbo". It says something that they usually listed the drummer first in the credits for a song.
Anyhow, thank you Sina for your great performances, and also for the musical education. I've been learning so much about drumming and drummers (and, not coincidentally, coming up with a lot of new questions as a result). It's nice to know my old brain isn't quite fossilized yet.
It's nice to be able to not just see a great drummer playing an excellent song, but be able to feel it as well. Excellent job Sina! and hats off to who ever is mixing this.. the balance of your drums and the track was perfect!
Totally feeling this groove.. Yeah.
Love the spacing aspect. Very enjoyable thank you
Sina--your range has become astounding. I can only assume that this was your goal from the start. Well, you did it! Congrats....
Great to be with you when you're shuffling through this song. This style suits you as naturally as the hammering off a week ago. And your sound - be it on the snare or the "metal" - ist just wonderful. So I really enjoy the few bonus bars after the song ended. Thanks for one more of your so much appreciated "Friday gifts".
What a wonderful transition from a wild crazy Sina to a relaxed and laid back Sina wonderful job you've got it together girl
Right you are, Hayes! It's those transitions that amaze me over and over again. And wherever Sina "transitions to" - please pardon that wording - she delivers her job with stunning perfection.
Thinking about "Burn" I am not sure Sina is that "wild crazy" as it appears. I'd reckon she is in perfect control of herself and her playing for all of those great 6 min 5 sec.
Fantastic, thx again for another Great Cover Sina
A great way to ease into a Saturday and begin a weekend with the talented and beautiful Sina…...Thanks for sharing and making it more of a wonderful day...
Your cymbal work is fantastic. Loving it.
Well done! One of my favourite bands to kick back and listen.😏🍷🎶 Keep it up and looking forward for new videos😁
