I initially thought this too since other officers were taking selfie’s with the rioters. It’s just extraordinary that the decisions of one person can make or break a situation.
Its a tactic we use in the Marines too, Agitate the person to get them to follow you rather than go into an area you don't want them to. That man deserves a medal for this.

I watched this live from Australia and I’m just a mum and grandmother and never thought he was giving in but thought he’s a bloody hero and very clever too . My heart was pounding watching him and worrying for his life .. it’s horrific what happened and I’m so sorry for my beautiful American friends and family over there and for the AMERICA I grew up looking up to 🕊🇦🇺

Absolutely he could have very easily fired off two maybe three clips of shots to disable that crowd of rioters but didn't, instead he used non lethal force, he punched the lead guy a couple of times and threatened him many times with his baton without striking him. He would have been equally justified at using deadly force when your being chased by a group of angry white Supremacy supporters.

The first time I saw it I couldn't figure out what he was doing, he was retreating but nothing about his body language signaled fear, he was going out of his way to move slowly enough and antagonize them enough that all of their focus stayed on him. Then I found out that the door he glances at to the left goes to the Senate floor, where all of the members were still in session and vulnerable, and then I understood. Eugene Goodman is an American hero.
And 100 feet away stood Pence, his wife and daughter.
With secret service protection. And those Rogers weren’t likely armed. So what would’ve happened goes as follows:
SS: GET BACK
Rioters: No
SS: *unloads dozens of bullets*
Now, if the rioters were willing to die and vastly outnumbered the security team……

I was so glad he was given the honor of escorting Kamala Harris at the Inauguration. He deserves all of those things, and also the gratitude of all Americans. Without his quick thinking, Jan 6 might have turned out very differently.

If the officer would have engaged he would have only been overwhelmed by the mob. Instead, he was on his radio communicating the situation, and led the mob to a choke point where backup was waiting. One officer controlled an entire mob, not through violence but with behavioral tactics and incredible bravery. This is policing at its finest.
I cannot imagine the adrenaline and fear that must have been coursing through this brave officer.

There is footage from other vantage points. He is not alone but on point with a small group of officers. They were all brave that day.

While I watched the events unfold on the 6th, I remember feeling so bad for this officer, thinking that he was just being swarmed and could do nothing. After seeing all the follow up reports on his actions, I just want to commend Eugene Goodman for the hero that he is. I truly feel that Mr. Goodman saved the day at the Capitol. I know many others were heroic also, but I am just so impressed by Mr. Goodman's cool and calm actions. He is a true American hero!

This man knowingly put himself on the front line of the assault on the Capitol. Some would say that he's just doing the job that he's paid to do but how many of us would have the strength and wherewithal in the heat of the moment to use such an aggressive diversion tactic on an obviously angry mob?

You can see the split second indecision where he moves to block the door to the senate chamber, realizes they’ll just keep pushing and following him in that direction, changes his mind, and makes the decision to shove the dude and then lead him in a different direction. Very quick thinking.

If he was a hero he wouldn't be leading rioters into the Capitol Building deeper into a staged live action set-up. Back up was only a couple flights of stairs up it seems. He would've stood ground, wasted some time arguing like they're told to in their handbook which is a stall tactic for back up to get to the scene, and he would've used pepper spray, and had his duty weapon unsecured from it's holster, ready for action, hands on. Police don't retreat, they hold the line. They're mostly brazen idiots with Batman utility belts equipped like wartime soldiers. That small corridor offered the perfect bottleneck to ward off a large group by one heavily armed man at the helm, until those dozen other cops showed up 20 seconds later.
