  • Papillary thyroid cancer is the most common type of thyroid cancer. Significant exposure to radiation can increase a person’s risk of this type of thyroid cancer, says endocrine surgeon James Wu, MD. Some families have genetic mutations that put them at greater risk for thyroid cancer, which is why family health history is important to discuss with your provider.
Most patients haven’t been exposed to radiation and they don’t have a family health history of thyroid problems. In these cases, it’s unknown exactly what causes thyroid cancer. Several studies have looked at smoking, obesity, pesticides and other factors, but the data isn’t strong enough to prove a direct correlation to thyroid cancer.
No matter the cause, long-term outcomes for most thyroid cancer patients at UCLA Health are excellent. If you have questions about your thyroid cancer risk, talk to your health care provider or endocrinologist. Learn more about the UCLA Health Endocrine Center: www.uclahealth...

I got diagnosed in 2010. Had a total thyroidectomy, followed by radioactive iodine treatment, followed by annual thyroid/neck ultrasounds, blood tests, etc. I got the all clear in 2011 and remain cancer free today. I worked as an orthopedic tech - spent TONS of hours in the xray rooms helping with patient positioning, etc. I wore the apron faithfully, but never even thought about wearing a thyroid shield.

@@siddharthniranjan8547 hello. Yes, I had papillary thyroid cancer. Surgery and treatment cured me…no cancer on follow up scans since 2011. I feel good, but thyroid medicine has limits and that can be a challenge

@@siddharthniranjan8547 yes, I was diagnosed with papillary thyroid cancer and have not had recurrence since 2011. I feel fine, other than the fact that thyroid medicine is not the same as having a thyroid.

I need to go for a biopsy because my doctor didn't like the results from my ultrasound. I am pretty certain that I have thyroid cancer.
What I think that caused my abnormal thyroid is my chewing nicotine gum. I quit smoking in 2008 using the gum but could never get off the gum. I don't think that nicotine gum is safe to use long-term.
    I am really depressed 😔
