You need to pour until there is a smooth stream of oil then stop pumping and wait till get level and stop dripping, then put screw back. Otherwise you can have too little or too much..
Hey George, got a 08 e60, my stick shift got stiff. Have not changed my transmission oil since I’ve had the car. It’s this the same process to get mine done and will this help smooth out the shift? Thanks for the help!
@@GeorgeAusters Tuesday steering arms. later on in the week will be doing both guibo bushes and the centre bearing. I’ve got a funny symptom after cleaning my manifold. On cold start if I press the brakes the revs bounce up and down like there’s a severe vacuum leak but once I set off it doesn’t do it again. What have I forgot to plug back in 🤣😂🙈
You didn't tell us what kind of fluid you used, looked through your description and found you used manual trans fluid, most people now use ATF in the manuals it makes it shift alot better and smoother
That’s pretty much standard for most differentials and transmissions. Some manuals or specific instructions state to let the fluid overflow until it nearly stops, before replacing the fill plug bolt. It’s usually a lot easier done and easy to tell if the car is on a lift or jack stands all around, as the car is entirely level. Even if you manage to overfill, you can only manage to do so to such an extent (it shouldn’t hurt the transmission). The only other hypothetical situation I could see, where you could even overfill the trans to such an extent, would be to use a transfer pump (the bigger, the worse) and to keep pumping even after overflow, and then to rapidly install the fill bolt with TONS of fluid still overflowing. Only way I know such a specific scenario is because I used to have to do this on purpose, as I only had 2 jack stands (used up front). This meant that overflowing normally would lead to me UNDER-filling the transmission… So, use this information as you will lol
@@GeorgeAusters Cheers... Thanks for the fast reply. I called BMW, and he was saying LF-3. Doesn't even know what viscosity is, and he only got 1L, which is no use as I need 2L.
Hey, I have an E60 520d automatic and just wondering how often I should get the transmission serviced or what steps can I take to prolong its life as it's at 150,000 miles now
How did you find out the correct MTLF? On your 5 series you used 3 and on the 1 series you used 2. I have a bmw 120d e82 but can’t find anywhere online which one would be correct for my car! Cheers
hi how safe is to put the jacks like u had done i noticed u have regular ones and u just placed them over the jack pad want to do the same thing for zf8 and another thing is it safe to start the car while on 4 jacks ?
I’m not a massive fan of using the jack pads, I prefer supporting the car on the subframes but makes it difficult to get it level. I have started the car numerous times while in the air. Check out my finding the clunk video👍🏻

Ha haa life time :D, like long life oil which I am changing each 6000-8000 kms - depending on driving style. Fantastic video George. Looks like my clutch and flywheel are about to give up (M47 135k), I’m assuming it’s not worth changing the transmission oil if I’m going to have the clutch and flywheel changed?
Rubbish to lifetime. I got steptronic GM 5 speed. Dumped original trans oil at 240k km - it was black. Foul. Pain in the arse not being able to drain the torque converter. You gotta do the oil change twice to get the 1/3 of fluid that stays in there in TC.

Your intro opinion and explanation is absolutely correct

Hi, great stuff m8, what engine you recommend?
Hi, I have a F36 2015 420d assume it’s the same operation and just need a 8mm Allan key socket to remove the plugs? Thanks

Can I have a link to the pump used in this video please?
Link is in the description mate
It can be also available in store somewhere near you. I wanted to buy it online and then found it it our local supermarket shop :D
Was wondering why you didn’t change the crappy sump & filter.... then I remembered you had a manual!!🤣🤣🤦🏻♂️
Hahaha
Is this a F20/21 type 1 series and is it diesel or petrol?

Westway mtf LT 2 gear oil. Keep smiling Nathan lol
I did at the beginning man. MTF LT2 / GL4 75W80. I just use what BMW recommends as this gearbox is very very smooth as it is!
Would the redline d6 atf fluid be fine for this?
How do you know to fill right up to the fill hole? Should you not fill as much as you empty out? I guess this car had no troubles with this method?

What size was the drain bolt looked like torx rather than allen also how much total time did it take please?
Both 6mm Allen bolts. It’s about an hour job including getting the car up in the air level. Obviously takes a lot longer when you’re filming 😁
got a bmw 320td compact manual do you know what oil i would use ? its 2003 thanks
Pretty much the same👍🏻

Transmission oil is nothing to do with the clutch or flywheel so still worth doing👍🏻
The new bolts have gasket?...and if they have is rubber gasket?
Yes they have a nitrile gasket on them
didn't know manual gearbox have oil
