Thank you for the demonstration. Useful to know what pitfalls are ahead. I've been worrying about changing the gearbox oil in my 150,000 mile 1 series E81 for some time so bit the bullet today. Your video made the job easy. The plugs came out easily and were in good condition so I reused them. I used Comma oil, the containers have long spouts and there is enough access in the E81 to squeeze the oil into the gearbox directly from the containers so didn't need a transfer pump. The old oil looked very fresh and uncontaminated; I don't know if I have wasted my time but it has put my mind at rest. From this experience I don't think I'd recommend changing the oil. Just my ten penneth.
Thanks for sharing man, don’t see many manual E81’s in this part of the world. Yours may have already been done previously since new. For the relatively low cost of the oil, and the time it can be done in it’s worth doing, just for the piece of mind knowing it’s fresh
If they are stubborn a few mins with a heat gun to warm the casing up can help, not as effective as with a steel plug in an ally casing as no differential expansion but still makes a difference and can also squirt a freezing type release spray onto allen key an plug as you try to loosen the plug ( not before to minimise heat transfer and try to avoid hitting the casing around the plug.)
My car's in the shop now getting new tires put on I asked for a quote to change the gearbox oil they told me $125 USD for just the labor lol I already have the gearbox oil in the car, I said no thank you I'll do it at home this video just made me realize how easy it is and I'm happy I declined their service

great video - thanks for this. Do you want to warm the gearbox up a bit before dropping the oil out? Also, I'm in Australia and have always relied on Penrite oils here locally - they recommend a semi synthetic 75w80 GL4 - would you opt for synthetic only?
Yes, it’ll drain easier if the oil is warm. They only do that weight in semi-synthetic, I’d go for fully synthetic, it’ll go a lot longer before starting to brake down (had to go to the main dealer for mine)
Hey pal. I went to my bmw dealership today to get the gearbox oil and drain/fill plug. Unfortunately they didn’t had the oil (which was very expensive😳) so I ordered the mogul 75w80.
They have o-ring seals which lose there sealing quality over time. Non necessary to change them, but when the cars are this old it’s worth it, they are cheap too

No. The clutch isn't inside the gearbox. It's located in the bell housing between the engine and the gearbox and runs dry. Clutch wear and gearbox oil are completely independant.

@@Drpepper7916 i was asking if you could fill it from the bottom up. There is threads on the bottom plug and you would screw a plastic pipe fitting into it and pump the oil in from the bottom.
