In this week's episode of Question Time, Harry discusses traction pads and their function on fishes and longboards as well as 'how' to ride a fish and what is the 'correct' way to pop up.
    Episode notes:
Yoga Studio Is it correct that a Fish is ridden more in the front of the board as the foam is heavy in the front of the board and a Groveler is ridden more like a short board where it is ridden in the middle or back?

Those pop-up tips are one of the best i've seen in RUclips so far. Especially the "slow down" one. Thank you!!

"Make sure your arms are all the way straight before moving your legs." This cue alone helped me be super consistent with my popups.

As you get more advanced youll find yourself almost slowing your pop up down even more(obviously depending on the steepness/speed of the wave) as to time your pop up with the steepest part of the breaking wave that you can, to maximize down the line projection for a nasty first turn.👍

Harry since you are talking about wax and grip, I was wondering when do you add more wax and when do you just use comb the wax?

Hi! I got a question, but first of all thank you for all the great free content you put out for surf coaching and training. I love it, and it really has helped my surfing as well as the tips I have passed on to other surfers. My question is: why is it that the waves seems to slow down and at times get messy when the tide is within 30 minutes -/+ of the low tide or high tide peak? It might not be completely true and of course every spot Is different... but is there something to this in general?
    Love from Norway!

I found some surfboards have channels on topside of the board near the rails. What are their functions? Better for duck dive hand grabbing?

When you say roll up wax into a sausage shape and stick it on your longboard do you mean like put it perpendicular to the stringer where like the kick of a traction pad would be?

    • @SurfSimply
      @SurfSimply  4 года назад +2

I think he means put it in replacement of the kicker pad, so you still have the physical marker to determine back foot placement, without the eye sore of an actual track pad.

Good job Harry. As for the pop up, specifically on a shorter board, where your toes don’t rest on it, good technique I learnt is so called “kick flip” , when you kick your heels up right around the time when your arms are fully extended or almost there. This helps a lot in with lifting your knees off the board (or thighs, depending on how quickly you do it)

Question (not sure if this has been addressed previously): could you explain the physics behind the formation of point breaks?

1st lager fins will lift the tail up help you get more speed
2 I personally don't like using tail pads I ask a lot of surfers they say tail pads are excellent you know where your foot is but I'm old school

Hey, I'm riding a 6,5 fish with a traction pad and I repeatedly touch the pad during takeoff with my behind foot. More specifically the little bulge on the side where the big toe starts. Do you have any tips how to fix this? It sometimes even creates a little wound. Does anyone else experience this? Cheers!

Falks I just applied a tail pad on a mid length, tri fins, I put it slightly in front of the rear fin cause I took as reference my front foot positioning. I felt like of If I put it far back, it may stall the board, I haven't tried it yet, but do you think I got it wrong?? Basically my back foot ends in the middle of the thruster, do you think that having the foot slightly in front of the center fin it may hamper maneuverability?? Thanks falks really appreciate your answer

Hi Harry! I'm learning and practicing pop up; I have a question....when you pop up and bend the knees which is first foot that touch the deck? I know is such has a metter of fractions of seconds and i's nearly at the same time but I've some problems expecially in the steep waves and maybe I do some technical mistekes. Thanks a lot to share yours skills with us!

I LOVE front deck pads, I haven't waxed my board in so long
but I DO still wax the kick pad ; ) just for extra oomph
and I feel like it protects my board from those dents too

Great video Harry but traction pads on a mid length or mal? Have to disagree with you on this one. They are ugly toe stubbers and good luck removing them once the grip has set. Cheers Dave

Great video again! Also larger fins (questions of a couple of weeks ago) have been amazing! Another question: usually when I try carving turns, I lose too much speed at the end of the turn to stay on the wave. I usually surf on smaller waves for my own confidence (and enjoyment), could you give some tips on increasing speed on smaller waves, like that jumping/pumping motion some surfers do? I sometimes see good surfers pull out the craziest manouvres on small waves so I'd think gaining more speed should be possible. Thanks for the great tips again!
