  • Learning to surf can be a doorway to a healthy, happy hobby, and for many people that first surf lesson can either make or break the obsession. So a lot falls onto the shoulders of the coach, and sometimes that person is a close friend or family member. In this week's episode of Quick Tips Ru explains some universal truths in getting the best from a surf lesson, and planting the surfing seed.

    The biggest problem with "standard" beginner lessons is that most of these people will not come back to surf again. The goal of these operators is to churn through as many people as they can. They are not interested in getting them to really learn how to surf. Instead they are going for that "instagram" moment. They just want a good picture of someone surfing (standing up) so they can check off that box. This is very different than what you guys teach at Surf Simply. Thanks for the videos. I have learned so much from them!

      I wouldnt say thats a problem, an 'instagram lesson' is exactly what alot of people want, it might not be the best way to learn how to surf, but if its what they want then its not a problem necessarily

      I do this sometimes after a "hand slip off the deck" blown take-off. I'll just practice my turns prone.

    Great video, I've taken a handful of people out for their first time and they all try to pop up super quickly before they have even caught the wave, one friend had a habit of popping up before the wave even hit him. I think I was placing too much emphasis on popping up and not enough on what catching a wave feels like. It was pretty clear they couldn't tell when they were really on it or not so removing the whole popup from the process will get them used to that. I'm taking a friend out again this weekend so I'll try this out thanks.

    This is so well explained. 💯
    It has taken me literally years to figure out details like this myself. Even friends who have been surfing for longer than me haven't explained this so well, let alone some others who don't even pay attention to this.
    Thanks.

    It's awesome the way you have chosen to teach. When I took some coaching from a surf school here they pretty much didn't set any goals whatsoever to achieve. Just the basic paddle and popup on the sand. I didn't catch a single wave on any of those sessions, but did a ton of nosediving. It wasn't til I put into practice starting in the pool, then whitewater, and finally graduating to unbroken waves that I had success. Also, I set goals for each session. For our area they also hire a lot of highschool kids that learned to surf very early and don't really know how to teach others, especially adults. When I asked about the things I did wrong, they usually had to scratch their heads and think because they weren't really analyzing the needs of the students in the water.
    Anywho, long story. Just wanted to say that I loved the video and thank you for all the others that you all have done. It is because of them that I was able to teach myself to surf confidently.

    Wish I've watched it few months ago, so I could help my g/f with understanding of board movement and basics when she tried surfing for the first time. I couldn't explain it, because it came to me naturally with trial and error, and surfing instructors we got for her were also not helping.
    Thanx so much for your channel and explaining everything so simply and usefully, it really helps and stands out from everything I watched on youtube!

    What can one practise with a stand-up paddleboard?
    I've had 4 lessons (on the Baltic Sea in the north of Poland) and I was able to ride the board in a kneeling position. I only managed to stand up twice so far, despite catching over 35 waves over the 4 lessons. I'm not sure if this is a good progress or a bad progress.

    At your camp, when you get intermediate surfers who can't carve well (me and all my mates..), do you get them to do this?

    • @SurfSimply
      @SurfSimply  3 года назад +1

      It depends on the conditions and also why they cannot carve. The white water can be a useful tool to use occasionally for intermediate surfers because you can do 20 reps of something in 20 minutes. Kind of like how you don't stop using a gym once you become an experienced athlete (not a perfect analogy but you get the idea). If we felt it would be helpful for an intermediate surfer to do a white water drill then we'd do it once the onshore wind had come up to make sure that they are not missing any great waves out the back. So it's an "add on" rather than an "instead of".

    Some feed back I received from another surfer was that I was very stiff and needed to relax. I’m angling my takeoffs and surfing down the line but not really successfully pumping or doing turns. Any tips?

    • @SurfSimply
      @SurfSimply  4 года назад

      Hi Robert, it's difficult to say without seeing you on video. Though there are a few things to think about: Relaxing helps to maintain more stability as the knees relax and absorb more bumps. Staying lower and bending at the knees is also improves stability for confidence in turns. Moving the back foot further back can improve the response of turns, and moving forwards of the mid point can then improve the re-acceleration after a turn. Have a try of some of those and let us know how it goes! I'd also suggest our video coaching to pinpoint exactly what the limiting factor might be! Email us info@surfsimply.com for more information. Thanks, Will
