Thomas McNabb How does surf foot positioning differ to skateboarding/snowboarding? It seems to me that a surfer's' back foot tends to be facing a bit more forward than skaters and snowboarders. Their knee seems to point a bit more forward too. Just wondering if there are different foot placement angles to try that I'm not aware of

Mave Costigan 90% of the time I surf the inside because I am too intimidated to put myself in the line up. I guess its more of a social/emotional problem but I would appreciate any advice on how to change my mind set.

Great segment on managing line-up. Establishing your "circle", establishing priority for a wave, acknowledging those who also going for a wave, and pointing out that most folks are doing their best to stay out of the way are all subtle points that can help with confidence in the line-up. Thanks !
The foot placement and knee angulation/weight transfer using hips also great reminders! I participated at Surf Simply 8 years ago and that "almost slightly pigeon-toed" foot placement has become ingrained in my muscle memory.

Thanks for taking the time to talk through my question, Harry. I had a proper "I'm on the telly" moment when I heard you say my name.
I really liked the approach of breaking a chaotic the situation down into more predictable events. Uber-rational. Like, filling in the blanks.
As you said, my confidence improves massively when I'm out with a more advanced surfer. I've had trouble finding an instructor for intermediate surfers here, but just today I was talking to someone who says they'll work with me. Fingers crossed.
I actually surf a fairly unremarkable beach break in Ireland. By global standards the crowds never get too hectic. A couple of times this year I've even had the place to myself for an hour! But I'm new to the beach and I haven't cracked the scene yet. Not the easiest year for making new connections.

Very good. The line up can be intimidating, more so than the surf! So true about having a buddy or a coach with you. I have a coach one session a week. It makes all the difference. My fave session. And he's very good at respecting the line up but also making sure I get all my waves. LOVE your videos !!!!

I am a local and live at a spot and a few locals, younger men gave a Dad and a 10 year old problems then came to me next
And started talking poop to me.
I ignored them till they started their dropping in and blocking.
What they didn’t know and found out later is my first passion sport was Jujitsu Judo and military. I surf very well.
After I didn’t back down from their antics they talked to a 40 year local. He told them to stay away from me that guy can do damage. So far so good.
I don’t talk to many in the lineup. So few know me.

Can you go over relative vs absolute board size? For example, at about 5’10 and 160lbs, I feel I start getting some glide out of boards at around 6’8 and up (depending on shape and all that of course). If my girlfriend is 5’1 and 100 lbs, does she get the same effect at a board that’s 9” shorter if it’s the same shape? How’s it change if the board width is kept the same vs scaled down proportionally? Or if I have a 6’4 x 21.5 egg shaped board, it surfs a bit closer to a shortboard for me than a midlength. Since it’s much longer relative to her, would it surf more like a midlength? I could use some help understanding how the relative size of a person to a surfboard (and wave) affects the characteristics of a surfboard. Thanks for all the great videos, I watch all of them!

If the line up looks like that I go somewhere else no wave is worth getting stressed out over!
After a snowboard accident (torsional fracture of the tibia), and after a long and difficult bone welding (now I know why...), my front foot is twisted 20 degrees forward .
On my snowboard, I turned the front binding 20 degrees more (that's huge I know) to preserve my knee, and do what I can. But with surfing this is another story...
Do you have any advice to help me to improve my stance ?

A wave is approaching and you are a bit late paddling for positioning, and you feel the wave will have a steep take off. Yesterday, I noticed that under that circumstance, as I was paddling, for a short moment, I opened my legs outside the board and deeper into the water as trying to generate some drag. Does it sound a sensible technique? could it help to turn quickly or to ease the approaching take off? I did not understand well, why my body tried that.
by Dominate foot reference only, shouldn't the dominate foot most always be back over the fins for power surfing from the fins?
Also, something its not said much, its that feet are suppose to move whilst surfing. when doing a cut back, barreling, airs...

Cool information. I grew up skateboarding in the 80s and early 90s and always thought style mattered, and by style I mean fluidity and aesthetics. Two guys could be at the same technical level but if one guy was bow legged or had flappy arms I would find his skating much less desirable or “cool”. The same goes for surfing. You have your Tom curren and rob machados and then you have your Gary elkertons.

Yes! I too would love to know this!! My waves are mostly beach breaks. Super dumpy at low tide, I don't bother. But otherwise, how do I tell at such short notice whether a wave will just close out or peel. The decision time is short lived!

I don't know how many other ppl do this, but say I'm on the outside and got a guy in the inside, I'll still paddle to note if the guy is good or not and if they catch the wave I'll pull off but If they aren't the best paddler or surfer and If they miss the wave, next time if we are both paddling for the wave and I don't have priority I'll still commit and go cuz I feel that they r gonna waste a good wave, but I'm not a total dick If they get one it before me I'll still pull off

Look at pictures of professionals surfing. Almost invariably the front foot faces outward at least 20 degrees.
