hackerski I see elsewhere people talk about the importance of twisting/rotating for carved turns, It seems like you don't agree, is that correct?
James Silverman - I was wondering if you could do a segment on how to safely bail when inside a closeout section so as to avoid getting speared by your board (nose and/or fins)?
Christi Lane Pretty please go into more physics detail about hard rails. I’m a wake surfer and most of your content translates wonderfully. The episode about rails understandably focuses more on soft rails. I’m a skim style wakesurfer so my rails are usually hard all the way around depending on the board. I love what you guys are doing!

It’s crazy how literally the timing of my surf progression syncs with these videos..... I just started working on this thanks!!!!!

Wow, really interesting. I had latched on to upper body rotation as being an issue in my surfing (intermediate) but your explanation and examples make total sense. Thanks!

Hey! Wondering if you could go into the mechanics of aerial surfing? How do the best aerialists create the 'pop' aside from pure speed? What makes a good section for an aerial?

Hello. Love the videos. Could you please tell us how to deal with getting your rear foot to the back of the surfboard to make carving turns based on different surf board lengths: short board, mid length and long board? Also the optimal foot position for each board based on your position on the wave? Thanks!

*I should clarify this is without ending up in the "poo stance"

Harry, thanks for the lightening fast response on bailing when you can straighten out toward the beach, but do you do the same thing (kick the board forward and sit/fall back) if you can't turn back toward the beach blc you're trimming down the line under the curl (or in the tube)? I've seen guys jam their inside rail into the wave to turn 90 degrees through the wave and popping out the back... My dear/dillema is either waiting to long and having the wave close out and scoop the board around and up the face into my head, or not being able to make a sharp enough turn to bury/penetrate the rail and/or nose into the face of the wave which ends up sending the board up and towards my head .
Is it better/safer to just stay on rail and over the board and letting the wave closeout on you? Again, assuming you can't turn towed the beach b/c the curl has already pitched, how do you bail inside a tube?
... I just wish it was a more frequent problem, but I figure if I had an exit strategy, I might feel more comfortable putting myself into that position . 🤙
Thanks a ton for doing these segments, they're awesome!

After analyzing rail shape, next step in rail discussion would be thickness, which seems as important as edge shape.

Hi! Phenomenal vids, I'm on the Nwest coast of spain and wanted to ask about how deep to go?
2 years beack I nearley drowned under a few rip waves that through me way out and I got ( really) scared. What should I do to up my level but know when one shouldn't paddle out because you simply don't have the physique to get back to shore.
Ps: as a teacher myself, wow! What a way to explain+ I did physics

I agree - swim more to get stronger. Consistently so you build up your cardio. After that, you may really benefit from hiring an instructor. Maybe ask your local surf shop.

Thanks for all you do, Surf Simply! I've been having issues with my backhand surfing. When popping up to my feet, I have the bad habit of placing my front foot to close to my backfoot. I usually end up hitting the bottom of the wave feeling fairly straight up, where I then shift my front foot up the board and try to initiate a bottom turn. Most of the time it's too late and I'm in the flats in front of the white water. Any tips to improve or correct this?

Clean up your popup t o land with a wider stance.. Adjusting the front foot after the drop
and at the bottom of the wave is too late of an adjustment and it will mess up timing.

Thanks Harry for putting this series together. Question: What's the trick to surf steeper waves (3-5ft)? The issue I have is when I use a shorter board with more rocker, its difficult to paddle into these waves and am finding a quick/late take-off. When I use a flatter mid-length, the curve of the wave finds me catching my board nose after my pop-up. Is there a quick tip to try to fix this?

I tend to angle my board a bit on takeoffs tends to help with this issue on my longboard

i have a black beauty which is all hard edge and i can attest you can literally feel it cutting into the wave face creating its own ledge to sit into.

    • @wolf-yw9wk

it really only grips like this on really good waves though.. u get it into a softer wave and it can ledge out like that. i only take out the bloc beauty on really good points head high days w steep open faces.

i have a question for question time..... how to throw more spray???

  • @Jim-fe2xz
    @Jim-fe2xz 3 года назад +2

Well my 1962 board had 50/50 rails & not much rocker. It was very difficult to turn. My modern hard edge epoxy long board turns great (but it has more rocker too) and I can't say i could sense any difference "gripping" the wave. Not questioning the analytics but not being a purist or expert by any means my experience doesn't seem to match the conclusions.

Rail edges - all makes sense thank you, just wondering if anyone’s experimented with a hard edge on the nose to stop digging or catching the rail? Other than high level long boarding I can’t think of a reason why it would be good to have the nose rail ‘stuck’ in the wave face...
