    "Sometimes, it takes more courage to give up than to keep going" (Napoléon Bonaparte-1812). How many of you out there wouldnt even think of being able to handle the daily stress of the US Presidency? You run your mouths yet not one of you could do the job because if you COULD you would be there now. Nixon would have hurt more people staying in then by leaving. And he knew this. Imagine the anguish this man must have felt. Only now does history look at the Nixon Administration with compassion rather than contempt. Nixon was not a bad or evil man just made some poor decisions. He inherited a stagnant economy from Johnson and Kennedy; a seemingly never-ending war which he didn’t start but had to try to end it, large-scale efforts to desegregate the nation's public schools admit still festering racial unrest. When I enlisted in the Army in 1977 I swore an oath to respect our President…. we didn’t have to like him…but we did have to respect him. Many of the comments below state what this country would have been like if Nixon hadn’t resigned. NO ONE knows what would have, could have or should have. You can’t change the past only the future. If you disagree with Trump vote him in 2020 or run against him.

    • @firgasz2920
      @firgasz2920 2 года назад

      Stagflation and the transition to a mostly post industrial economy would have happened anyway regardless who was occupying the oval office, because it was a global process that accured in any western country. Vietnam would have fallen by 1975 anyway, because congress had enough, and the democrats would have holden their majorites in the house and the senate anyway just like the shah of iran would have to leave his country and even the teheran hostage crisis did not happen because of jimmy carter. But you could still argue, that if a republican president (maybe ford) would be in charge at this time and the republicans be in charge of the white house since 1969, which means for the whole 1970ths it would have been enormous difficult for Ronald Reagan to distance himself even as an "Outsider" running as a candidate for the party that would have been in charge in a time where almost everything went bad for the country. Carter had extremely bad luck to be in the White house in 1977 til 1981. And do not forget that the recession lastet until fall of 1983, and for the most time of Reagans first term it was more expected that he would be a "one term president", because his approval ratings were low until the economy started booming again by fall 1983.
      You could also ask the question what would have happened, if reagan and not ford would have won the nomination in 1976. And the answer might be simple, even if Reagan would have won in 1976 the bad shape of the economy would have haunted him till 1983 and it would be very doubtful that he would be re-elected in 1980

      There is an argument for that. Nixon's Electoral total in 1968 was 301. Trump got 306 and there is every reason to believe it will be that much or higher in 2020. I don't see him failing to carry anything two and a half years from now that he carried in 2016. Ohio, Pennsylvania and Florida are assured which means a second term is assured. No way to stop it. Nixon slaughtered McGovern like a farm animal and I don't look for that level of performance from Trump in 2020 but the actual outcome will never be in question. 1968 was a shootout. 1972 was shooting fish in a barrel. 2020 will be the same way.

If that miracle had occurred, he would have been a lame duck for the rest of his term. However, he only had the support of perhaps a dozen Senators. Bottom line: If he didn't resign on August 8, 1974 he would have been removed from office. All that happened afterward probably would have happened just as it did.

Bernie will probably be the nominee in 2020 as a straw man just as Stevenson (52/56), Mondale (84), Dukakis (88) and Kerry (04) were straw men who could never be viable. Read Ferraro's book. Even she says they knew they could never win. At some point, all this stuff becomes political theater.
      The Republicans got their tax bill. That sort of thing only happens once in a generation so the die is cast. We're going to have Republicans in office for years to come, both in Congress and the White House. This ship has sailed, nothing you can do to stop it. This time next year, you and I will be sitting here arguing about 2020 but the people in charge will already know the outcome. I know it right now.

    Well we can have a good idea of what would have happened. After the current situation with Trump plays out. If Nixon had the same strategy as trump ie the middle finger and deny deny deny. I'm sure as with Trump nothing will come of it and he would have finnished out his presidency.

      Probably be in some simmering Cuban Missile Crisis in Syria. Liberal dipshits seem to forget the bullshit going on during the couple of months between Trump's election and inauguration. And why are now liberals all of a sudden anti-Russian? They couldn't wait to suck and swallow the Kremlin when it was communist. Go figure.

      If Trump never became President, The US never cuts off relations with Cuba and all the EPA regulations are not rolled back, this leads to a Economic development in clean energy at the expense of business. Business's are less willing to provide increases in productivity simply because there are more taxes to pay thus less money to use as an insensitive. This of course to the average worker, doesn't increase or decrease overall performance but as the cost of living increasing and retirement age gaining higher and higher, many become to question the idea of the American Dream, with to them, appears to be not be a very good dream due to no living standard increase.
      In this reality, it is likely that Hillary would achieve the same outcome concerning North Korea due to the Olympics still occuring in this reality and a original plan of crackdown with sanctions (Similar to our timeline but - a possibly less military threat towards them). Hillary never destroys the Iran deal thus Iran is still fine with the US, However her plan to basically put no boots on the ground in the Middle East, causes ISIS to stay alive for longer than expected. Russia is more distant with the US during this timeline, although Russia is a bit rocky in our timeline.
      Putin's inability to reason with Hillary, seeing her as a threat. Puts both each other in tense relations. Her encouragement for the Free Syrian Movement would most likely cause Putin to assert itself in a Military way by getting heavy involved in the war against ISIS, thus more of a chance for the Syrian Government to remain in power once ISIS has been defeated, this causes Hillary to have to turn her back on the campaign promises by also getting involved due to "National Interest". This in turn results in a dispute which establishes the Democratic Syria nation in a US backed collation in which several US forces remain in this territory defending it from the rest of Syria, Russia defending Syria from the "Threat" Of the new Democratic Syrian government. (It is likely the land mass held by this Free Democratic Syrian Government would be the same areas now where the Democratic Syrian resistances is).

    It's give and take. Give Richard Nixon Remains president and Hillary doesn't run and take because Reagan wouldn't be president

      Reagan was almost the candidate in 1968 and then again in 1976. He would have gotten the nomination somewhere along the line. It was inevitable.

    We would have missed out on watching the rug pulled out from under Hilary's hooves and the liberal temper tantrums everytime they hear the word "Trump". We have at least 2.5 more years of this and then another 4 years. 2020 is going to be a hilarious election when he wins again.
