My favorite thing about this game is how, if you fail to convincingly lie about your name, you say it is “Raphaël Ambrosius Costeau”. Then you can spend the rest of the game insisting that really is your name, much to Kim’s annoyance.
And at a certain point you can complete a thought that does make it your name. It also gives you bonuses to the skills with the French names because they "sound fancy".
One little thing that broke my heart on a second go through the story is that, if you decide you don't want to question Klaasje further in your first conversation with her, you get a line of dialogue that says, "You're a cop, Harry. It would be weird of you to not want to ask any questions." Like he really does know who he is from the first moment he woke up, but the alcohol-poisoned, amnesiac mess he's been is preferable. He doesn't want to be that kind of animal anymore.
It's of note that its reaction speed that says this. I remember getting this check myself on my first playthrough, and honestly, I didnt even recognize it nor notice it. There was so much else going on that I kinda swept that away to focus on something else. I genuinly didnt think of that check again until I confronted evrart and he kept saying "harry" that my brain just went "wait, I've heard that name before"
i wrote an entire academic paper on this game a few semesters ago about its portrayal of trauma in the design, story and dialogue and a lot of the sentiments you shared in this video really resonated with me! amazing watch

this was absolutely amazing, very well written, edited and performed, I played Disco for about 350 hours and I still found out new things about it thanks to this video, great work
This was extremely well written and I love the presentation style especially with the cut away to the classroom. I'm completely unfamiliar with your channel but a huge fan of Disco Elysium and so happy that I stumbled upon this. On a personal note, I've struggled with some mental health stuff and my first play through of the final cut really helped me with some of that. That part that you said at the very end was very moving and reminded me of the message that I got the first time, about resilience and strength even when you hit rock bottom. "Cleaning out the Rooms" is probably one of my favorite thoughts: Someone's been walking around in your dreams lately, looking for something. Tidying up, rearranging. Storing away all the unrealized dreams, putting old pains in boxes. The worst nightmares have settled down for a while. A spot of light on the bedroom door after the dark. The fluttering of eyelids in the spring sun. A thought that arises, only to disappear again. And yet there's a pattern emerging… What if you didn’t lose your memory? What if something in Martinaise came and stored it all away. For you to slowly open one box at a time. So you can *choose* which parts to keep. Keep almost none of it. Only the flowers on the windowsill. Only the distant sound of a radio. Lose all the actors, the dark shadows, leave only the still lifes, the blissful distant wash of waves. If everybody knew -- you never did. She’ll be coming soon. That is all.
15:16 - As much as I adore how the game is, I would have utterly loved it if Encyclopedia could do little video examples like this, similar to how Visual Calculus superimposes images into the world. Seriously, great editing there.
I just finished this game the other day (after having put it down for a few months). I’m excited to watch through this because your scripts and delivery are outstanding. Disco is one of the few games that I was genuinely excited to do a second play through with all new stats.
Kim died in my playthrough, I recruited Cuno as a junior police officer, the photo of the phasmid therefore never got taken, and they didn't believe me and it ended. I thought it was a terrible ending, so I came here to see what was supposed to happen. Never got the lady at the train station either so my past was unresolved too. Klassje fled and Ruby killed herself. Didn't even get to follow up with the cryptid-zooologists in your or my endings. I was disappointed and expected much more. Tried to start again, but there are too few differences in the early game to really hook me in to a second run.
I felt like it ended too soon for me too. I might replay it with a different set up but quickly blasting through dialogue instead of carefully listening/reading everything.
Disco elysium is one of those games that is absolutely better on a 2nd play through. You will absolutely find things you missed completely the first time around. Dialogue options, tasks, characters. Things just won’t appear to you unless you have certain skill points or follow specific dialogue options. It’s incredibly rewarding on a replay. I highly recommend it
I'll say this a buddy of mine tried to get me to play this game, and 1 hour in, I felt like the game was an overly pretentious psych student ego project. Everybody around Harry may think he is an alcoholic and drug addict but in reality he is indeed one of the best detective ever. He figured out the murder in just few days. It's his unmatched power of imagination. Disco Elysium is one the best rpgs.

Brilliant video! I played Disco Elysium half a year ago, recommended it to my friends as a must play. When they start playing for the first time, I'll start my second playthrough simultaneously. Can't wait
You’re a great story teller, and a great story teller about stories. I feel like that’s a tough balance but you strike it. Thanks for all the hard work on this one, can’t wait to see what you do next.
i just beat the game for the first time this last weekend and watching this, it's truly impressive how many different ways there are to approach each task and how well written i definitely did things way differently.
This game will be away the first time I played it and still continues to do so with every playthrough. The amount of just overall flexibility and how you get from the beginning to the end of the journey is unlike anything else I have ever experienced. No other game has given us this much freedom of choice in role-playing where choice and consequences truly matter from beginning to end. Disco Elysium is an absolute masterpiece and it makes me sad to think that we may never get another one.
Excellent video, love this game so much. The OST by Sea Power is my personal highlight of the whole game, but I'm biased because they're my fave band anyway. Great work as ever Sam, did this brilliant game real justice 👍
Sam, I'm excited for possible new content coming on the channel, you've done a fantastic job with this video. I felt like I relived the game once again with its thrills and chills. Thank you. Hope you'll come back with more awesome content. Thanks again, for now ❤
Never finished the game, gave up in frustration four years ago after the shootout with the mercs, thought I'd missed a lead or something. Tried restarting but I couldn't just go over the same ground again. Now I've got some closure, both for plot and thematic depth
I don't know why I watched this whole thing and I'm crying a bit and god damn this game exposes my soul in a way that is interesting to noone but me yet I'm compelled to comment
First off, I love this video. It was a lovely revisit and well written/well spoken. Thank you for it. I mean no offense, but it was hard to listen to as the audio mix was a bit all over the place. Different scenes the vocals would gain or lose a lot, and the closing remarks were nearly drowned out by music. I'm subbing anyway haha 🙈 My mixes are no better, I get it. Nice work over all!
Well, that's a good summary on the plot. And a great job on explaining the game universe basics. However, you seem to ignore some things: A. Dros previous connection to Evrart. At least one job he actually confesses to, if you press him: a murder of former Union leader. And I personally find it hard to believe that it was a single occassion after which Evrart bros simply forgot about his existence and live on with their lives. B. Evrart's standing on a conflict with Wild Pines. If you dig deeper and press onto him, he "levels" with you and admits that he is actually trying to provoke the conflict and win it. Yeah, he does it intentionally, knowing that you relay this information to Joyce, but his motives do not really make any difference. His union is about to go full-scale mafia as it seems. Taking A and B into account there is a distinct possibility that the murder was initially ordered by Union. And all this story about past eating a person - although itself is an important aspect - but actually is a sort of cover-up detectives should take as the Dros' motive. The "tribunal" which you and Joyce were meaning to prevent - that was exactly what Evrart wanted. He does not need the murder to be solved as fast as possible. I'd say he used some connections in RCM to specifically put Harry on this case, to make sure this would never be solved - who would've expected an absolutely mad drunk to suddenly have a life-changing moment. To be even more sure no one talks to you, he spreads a rumor that you are Puta Madre agent. Why would Ruby think that some insane drunk works for mafia? If that information would have come from a person she trusts. After Harry suddenly comes to his senses Evrart tries to find any leverage on him: blackmail with his lost gun (I suspect if that information reached RCM, Harry would be fired immediately), bribes, incriminating him in some shady deals. Everything he can use to discredit Harry should he solve the case implicating Evrart or to send him on the false track, delaying the investigation, for instance by presenting him non-guilty persons to run after. So, Evrart wants to start the war. Is it just a coincidence that at this very moment Mr.Dros finally looses his marbles and decides to shot whoever he pleases and the first (and only) person just happen to be the Krenel mercenary sent by the Pines and his murder sends the whole war business in motion? I doubt that. C. You can get what seems to me as an EXTREMELY important bits of information about game universe if you contact Coalition warship. They give you insights on how Coalition government operates and what it plans are regarding Revachol. Of course it's impossible to tell whether writers mean it all literally or it all is just a bunch of lies, a story for the gullible fools and in reality Moralintern is just a bureaucratic conglomerate interested exclusively in its own survival. We don't have enough information to make a conclusion. Any way it's important knowledge about the world. D. When you talk to Klaasje (about her passport I believe), notice what Shivers tell you... When you first play the game it definitely wouldn't make any sense to you. On the second run - it makes all the sense in the world. At the same very moment you talk to her, phasmid opens the buoy and removes her passport. Why? Well, maybe to prevent her fleeing, maybe to prevent us from identifying her. I don't know, but that could not be coincidence. Why did phasmid stole Dros' scope after he shot the mercenary? To prevent him from murdering Harry? To prevent him from murdering anyone, so that it would become clear that those are the actions of a madman not a Union lynching? Whatever the answer is it brings us to the next question - why does phasmid do it? And I have a strong feeling that answering these questions will make it clear what phasmid really is and what this story is all about.
dude thanks for the comment! i really did enjoy it just as this essay itself. i also pressured evrart into telling about his plans for the union and yeah, in the end it all clicks.
Damn… I don’t have much to say except that this video is a real masterpiece. I can’t imagine how much time you put into making it and gathering all the info about the Elysium. This might be the best DE video I’ve seen so far. Keep up the good work
One of the most emotionally crafted soundtracks out there, everything about this game is so carefully designed, truly one of the best examples of video games being a form of art.
I've never played disco, and likely wont. the drama with the devs took the time when i was most likely to buy it and filled it with doubt and hesitation. so I'm glad to have seen this video. I am 24, by most older than me's standards, young. and yet I've spent the last year frozen, clutching to the past. a past that has already left me behind. regretting what I didn't do, what I couldn't, what I failed. who I wasn't, who I am not. this story has been a sobering reminder that I am alive. and that I am letting my days go to terrible waste. I leave this comment as a monument, and a challenge to myself, to once again lace up my boots and take action.
Woooo I've been anticipating this video! Subscribed not to miss it! Your videos are amazing and very insightful. I'm so excited! Thank you for your hard work!
I'm playing this game for the first time now and finding it incredible, but also incredibly hard to play at times! Learning about Harry's past has kind of clarified why. The whole objective of the game is to solve the case - but police work is also incredibly corruptive to Harry. He used to be a better man before he became a detective, and you can tell how much the misery and detachment and necessary cruelty of the job have twisted who he became. There is no way to solve the case while helping the people you meet. Eventually you run up against someone you have to intimidate, someone you have to turn in, and regardless of how much the world has been set against them, there's nothing else you can do to advance the investigation further. My Harry has enthusiastically latched onto the idea of becoming a cryptozoologist and, tbh, I'll have to see how far I get before I softlock and just stop playing lol. At least this playthrough. I could see this game being divisive just because there's no real way to play a "good guy" while running it. The political messages and everything aside, it's a really great portrait of how the best of intentions can lead us astray once we get too deep into our own idea of "good".
While she was untrustworthy in nearly every way, I knew a small amount of the ending to the game so I knew that arresting her would not help the case in any way and i couldn’t bring myself to do it anyway. She hadn’t done anything worth an arrest at that point either. Despite the fact that she runs before the tribunal and I dont know if what she told about herself is actually true, I just couldn’t do it
Rumor has it that, if, once you light the spirit bomb, if you can get into a menue and DRINK IT, there is a unique death message that has not yet been recorded.
holy shit this video made me realise how slow I was on my first run you're telling me I was supposed to do Evrart's chores on Monday instead of midweek??

You arrested klassje on the *second* day?
You move quick.
That being said, your channel deserves to be far larger. This video was tremendous, lad, well done.
Brilliant video! I played Disco Elysium half a year ago, recommended it to my friends as a must play. When they start playing for the first time, I'll start my second playthrough simultaneously. Can't wait
fantastic breakdown and editing, the switches between humor and misery is very disco ;)
You’re a great story teller, and a great story teller about stories. I feel like that’s a tough balance but you strike it. Thanks for all the hard work on this one, can’t wait to see what you do next.
Times been hard for BBno$ having to come give video game lectures
Storytelling with a great soothing voice. Subscribed
How is this video only 35k views? We need to get you up in the algorithm, good sire. This is video is a masterpiece.
Excellent video. It just breaks my heart that there will never be another game like this again
now THIS is how u do a game story summary!! bravo!
This is easily once of the best video essay type video thing Ive seen. Slay
The long awaited video! I‘m sure it‘s gonna be wild, thank you for your videos, mate. Love you :))
thank you, Serg! it's been a long time coming but I've made up for it by making it outrageously long 😅 thanks for your support as always 💙
I have been waiting for this for so long. Nice work mate!
i just beat the game for the first time this last weekend and watching this, it's truly impressive how many different ways there are to approach each task and how well written i definitely did things way differently.
I misread that there is no truce with the furries, and I thought a furry killed the man.
Mr Evrart is helping me find my gun
Holy shit. My guy I've watched your bioshock videos and they are fantastic and to discover you've covered one of my favourite games im blessed
What an undereated channel. This was a masterpiece. Thank you!
Thank you for the words at the end. What an amazing video
As soon as the video cuts from the game to your face, with that haircut and moustache... I probably injured myself laughing. Good one, dude!😊
Excellent video, love this game so much. The OST by Sea Power is my personal highlight of the whole game, but I'm biased because they're my fave band anyway.
Great work as ever Sam, did this brilliant game real justice 👍
I truly hope that this video as well as your channel absolutely explode. Excellent work, sir!
Sam, I'm excited for possible new content coming on the channel, you've done a fantastic job with this video. I felt like I relived the game once again with its thrills and chills. Thank you. Hope you'll come back with more awesome content. Thanks again, for now ❤
I appreciate your hard work so much. Thanks for the excellent videos.
Super fun video to watch, loved the different ways the teachers taught. Haven't been in school for a while so it gave me a good laugh, Great job!!!!!!
Never finished the game, gave up in frustration four years ago after the shootout with the mercs, thought I'd missed a lead or something. Tried restarting but I couldn't just go over the same ground again. Now I've got some closure, both for plot and thematic depth
finally a video essay that just sounds right
just raise up your volume but everything is real peachy
I don't know why I watched this whole thing and I'm crying a bit and god damn this game exposes my soul in a way that is interesting to noone but me yet I'm compelled to comment
You have some talent dude keep up the videos
love the Alan Rickman-ism of the geography teacher😂 (and love the rest of the video ofc)
he was very much an inspiration
i started the game two days ago, it's incredible, i cannot wait to play it again this evening
I appreciate your way of story telling. pls do divinity original sin 2
However, you seem to ignore some things:
Absolutely OUTSTANDING. What an incredible breakdown of Disco Elysium!
damn, i never arrested Klaasje, never felt worth it to me. I just figured out the shot came from outside by inspecting the window with visual calculus
Just finished watching the video. It's sooo good, the lore class segments were my favourite
Masterful video, great job!
I love that my playtrought was totally different. :D
Damn… I don’t have much to say except that this video is a real masterpiece. I can’t imagine how much time you put into making it and gathering all the info about the Elysium. This might be the best DE video I’ve seen so far. Keep up the good work
Amazing video. Incredible how much I missed in my playthrough
One of the most emotionally crafted soundtracks out there, everything about this game is so carefully designed, truly one of the best examples of video games being a form of art.
Nice! Now do This is the Police, I havent seen anyone cover that game in a meaningful way
I've never played disco, and likely wont. the drama with the devs took the time when i was most likely to buy it and filled it with doubt and hesitation. so I'm glad to have seen this video.
I pirated the game. The devs even recommend pirating it. They still want people to enjoy the game but don’t want people to buy it.
very disco brother man!
this video is the eels hips baby
Will I watch every single video essay about this game? I’m sure gonna try!
The entire story explained and I feel just as confused as when I started.
Fascinating hiw my timing and order of actions was very different. Great video, great game
Wait, I'm only now realizing, you didn't find the bullet in the corpse's head during tge autopsy?!?
Amazing video, you deserve more
I'm gonna watch and cherish each minute of this video (I'm a big disco elysium fan)
Woooo I've been anticipating this video! Subscribed not to miss it! Your videos are amazing and very insightful. I'm so excited! Thank you for your hard work!
Given that there's translations of the book starting to spread, I'm looking forward to seeing if there's something a bit more from you because of it.
What an awesome high effort video
One of the best videos to cover this fantastic game!
What a video mate, good job.
Despite the fact that she runs before the tribunal and I dont know if what she told about herself is actually true, I just couldn’t do it
I played through this multiple times and had no idea that Ruby could just run she died on every one of my playthroughs.
I loved the teaching style bit, I hope I passed the quiz 😆
Brilliant, that is all I can say. Thank you for this video.
absolute top notch content, thank you!
Rumor has it that, if, once you light the spirit bomb, if you can get into a menue and DRINK IT, there is a unique death message that has not yet been recorded.
holy shit this video made me realise how slow I was on my first run
you're telling me I was supposed to do Evrart's chores on Monday instead of midweek??
I love this guy’s voice
I'm about to sit down and paint for a few hours. 2 hour video? sure!
well what else you gonna do, watch paint dry?
Amazing video dude!
