    Did you end up replacing the missing components around the clock cap. Did the xbox turn on with out them ? I have a xbox 1.1 my clock cap leaked it was turning on before i took the cap of and 3 of the smd caps came off right next to the clock cap and now it wont turn on

    Thanks for telling about the clock capacitor ! I checked mine and the capacitor already leaked a long time ago (before I bought it) but I guess I was lucky, no damage at all on the board just a dead/little bit rusty capacitor...

      Great the word got to you. The word actually was out a long time ago, and is one of the things that XBox owners should do- take that cap out, even though it means breaking the tamper seals. Thanks for watching and commenting.

    found a cheap xbox but clock capacitor had leaked and a few of the components came off, like the little mlcc things , xbox starts but no video and has an orange light also turns on and off a few times before starting , would you say give up or easy to find the parts and replace?

    do we have to remove the excess solder after snapping the capacitor out?

  • @snowyowl9132
    @snowyowl9132 2 года назад +1

    So just to be sure, removing it will just affect the clock settings, right? The Xbox should still start up and read discs properly without it? If we do decide to replace it, any recommendations for specific capacitors?

    • @The_SegaHolic
      @The_SegaHolic  2 года назад

      Man, it's been a long time since I did this. You need a specifc cap. Man, I forgot what it's called. Ask nicely on the OG XBox Subreddit. And yeah, you don't really need it. It saves the clock info, so you don't need to keep inputting it on start up. You also need to be careful softmodding one that doesn't have the clock cap. as you can have an error code pop realated to setting the clock, and it's tricky to fix. I forget it's been so long, I need to refresh.

    Hey Sega Holic, I've been catching up on videos that I've missed from your channel. Specifically, I've seen a few of your Yahoo Japan pickup videos. I'm assuming you're using a proxy service like buyee? If so, would you be willing to give me a rough estimate on how much they charge you in fees and maybe how much shipping costs to Hawaii?
    I've been interested in using buyee and I live in southern California so I imagine that the fees you have paid would be very similar to what they would charge me.

    • @The_SegaHolic
      @The_SegaHolic  6 лет назад

      Yeah, I use Buyee and fees and shipping varies on final auction price, weight, and shipping service selected. You can rewatch some of them, as serveral of them have the price of the fees. You can also save on fees and shipping as several times during the year, they run promotions, sometimes offerering up to 50% off fees. BTW, they list their shipping rates as well as how they apply fees in their FAQ.
      With that said, it is not cheap, but buying and using Yahoo Japan via proxy service is cheaper than eBay most of the time.

  • @painco94

    I have a question: to neutralize the fluid of the clock capacitor do you have to use baking soda or vinegar? Everywhere else in the interent I've read vinegar (and I know this is the case for ordinary elecrtolythic capacitors), but I see you used baking soda in the video, and since I know this is a different kind of capacitor from the "normal" ones I was wondering wether in this case we have to use baking soda instead of vinegar. My intuition is that since vinegar is acid and baking soda is basic, onlyh one will work to neutralize the leakage, but I have no idea what find of fluid this particular capacitor leaks

    • @The_SegaHolic
      @The_SegaHolic  5 лет назад

      It's actually not a fluid if you can believe it... it's a gel/gas. I know I did a ton of research into what kind of cap this was. And yeah, baking soda neutralizes acid. That's why you add it in some cakes and stuff and you know it's still good if it bubbles.
      itstillruns.com/neutralize-battery-acid-baking-soda-8189182.html
      Shoot, I can't believe it's not in the comments. I'll be back after I search this out.... But again, it's not actually a fluid in there... or a solid.. it's actually gas.

    • @painco94
      @painco94 5 лет назад +1

      @@The_SegaHolic I could find out too with a quick google search that it is actually a gel and not a fluid, but the point is wether it is acid or alkaline, as this determines what chemical to use to neutralize it. So what you are saying is that it actually is an acid (wheras as far as I know, common electrolythinc capacitors have an alkaline leakage), correct?

But in this case, as in most cases, just clean the area with IPA (Isopropyl Alcohol) as thoughroughly as you can. Make sure to flood the underneath of components repeatedly if you think the material got under. Neutralizing at this point though is overkill. I just wanted to look smart for the RUclipsrs. Hey SegaHolic! I really enjoy your videos. I had my 1.0 OG Xbox refurbished right before they stopped doing official repairs to them. (I can't recall my issue, but I was happy to get it a checkup right before they stopped doing it). I only heard about this capacitor issue this week so I opened up my old Xbox to take care of this issue. Not only does it look like they updated my heat sinks (awesome!) but maybe they also updated my clock capacitor as well? My clock capacitor doesn't look like the one above. It is gold and black and appears to be a brand of "nichicon" and also says "1.0 F 2.5 V" and "UC (M)" on the sides. The capacitor doesn't appear puffy. Do you think I should still be concerned? I can upload some photos if you are interested in what either came in my 1.0 Xbox or what was updated by the official repair team right before they stopped taking repair orders.

      Looks like Nichicon also supplied aerogel caps for the clock.
      They replaced the v1.0 board that was originally in there with a v1.1 board. The fan jack on the board is missing, and there are no USB boards for the contoller ports... so that's why you no longer have a fan on the heat sink. A replacement v1.0 board was probably not available.

    I have a Xbox Crystal limited edition from 2002 and the motherboard is completely different from standard versions. Additionaly, the capacitor itself is a high quality one. My friend, an experienced electronics technician, desoldered it, verified it throughly and the capacitor is "healthy". Secondly, the console didn't work AT ALL after the capacitor removal, even though I use UnleashX.

      I just can't send the console anywhere - I don't let people use my cars and electronics ;) Anyway I have two questions.
      Do you have any good place for getting the clock capacitor? So far I only found Aliexpress and Amazon. I have a Panasonic capacitor, but it is a 5V and my friend doesn't like the idea of using it instead of a 2.5V one.
      Do you have any idea why my Xbox does not work without the mentioned capacitor? All other consoles seem to boot, as long as there is any mod installed.
