- As Herman Edwards once said - you play to win the game. But what if neither team can do that? Most sports have rules that are intended to give you the satisfaction of crowning an eventual winner, but they don’t always respect our time. Here are every sport’s longest game and their quick - and sometimes bizarre - stories

Yeah and the Nadal vs Djokovic match everyone wanted to see got postponned because Wimbledon is stubborn about tiebreaks, and cause of a lame ass curfew.
SolidSnake684 the curfew makes perfect sense. Nobody in the stands wanted to be there anymore, especially that late at night. But the tiebreak rule should be changed. Even Anderson said after winning that he didn’t enjoy it because it felt like a draw at that point. He didn’t feel good saying he won.

The Pawtucket game went so long (before being suspended) that there were only 19 people left in the stands. They all got season passes.

The longest FivePoints Vids RUclips video about the longest sporting events went a whopping 7 minutes and 49 seconds in July of 2018. Interesting note: it would have been longer but FPV couldn’t find any crazy examples of long games in the World Cup.
How about shortest games in every sport by time taken? Might have to distinguish between shortened games and full games.
I know I've looked in the past trying to find the NFL's shortest to no avail. I've heard it was a Packers vs Colts game way back when the Colts were still in Baltimore that clocked in at around 2 hours but I've never been able to verify that.

that Isner-Mahut match at Wimbledon was one of the best sporting events I've ever watched -- even if mostly as background noise, for much of its first day. I had all focus on it the second and third days, though! it's a pity that Isner was too exhausted from the heroic efforts of the marathon match to do well in his next go. much respect for them both.

Point of interest, the longest hockey game by number of overtimes is actually held by the Michigan State High School League where in 1955, the game went to 11 overtime periods during the season statewide championship game ending in a 3-2 final. However it only took 5 hours to play because high school hockey uses 15-minute periods and 8-minute overtime periods instead of 20-minute periods and features fewer ice cuts. The AHL also broke its prior longest game in league history this season in a playoff game between the Lehigh Valley Phantoms and the Charlotte Checkers; with the Phantoms winning in the 5th overtime period around 1 in the morning.
The Phantoms goalie also had over 90 saves, and allowed only 1 goal.

Additional fact on the Hamburg vs Nuremberg soccer games. As Nuremberg ran out of players in the 2nd game the german federation (DFB) awarded the Championship to Hamburg, but since the Bavarian Federation threatened to leave the DFB over this, they asked Hamburg to not accept the title, which the club did. So 1922 has no Champion.

The 1962 Grey Cup (Canadian Football championship) took 2 days to play as it was suspended with 10 minutes to go because of fog.

The Rugby match in 1997 I believe refers to a Rugby League Super League game between Queensland and New South Wales (given it was a Super League affiliated match this isn't a State of Origin game, that's another story), which went into sudden death extra time (as we call it here in Australia) after the regulation 80 minutes and 10 minutes each way of extra time couldn't seperate the teams. Eventually NSW won the match 23-22. In club Rugby League the longest match I can think of may have been the 1977 Grand final between St.George and Parramatta which was tied at 9-9 after extra time (80 minutes regulation plus 20 minutes extra time) and had to be replayed a week later. Three other Grand Finals have been tied but the GF the following year was tied at 80 minutes and was replayed 3 days later, the 1989 decider was finalise after the 20 minute extra time period, and the 2015 Grand Final saw the game end 3 minutes into extra time (which by that stage became a golden point period).
As for Rugby union, I can't provide a definitive answer on the longest match played.
And Isner just pulled off another insanity long match again. Not as crazy as 2010, but still...

I don't know if this can be counted but there was a NASCAR finish took 3-7 days to figure out the winner. It occurred back in the late 50s when Lee Petty and Johnny Beauchamp clashed it by less than a yard. Petty won and back then technology was more primitive, so it took a while to figure it out. It took 3-7 days to figure out the winner, and that marked the first closest finish in NASCAR history.

The longest game for Alabama fans was the game vs auburn in 2013 then they lost the Florida state in the natty! They stole it so You should have the kick six in the video

Most boring game ever? Probably the Mets and Astros, where the Astros walked it off in the bottom of the 24th inning winning the game 0-1

Kieran Piper - Yeah, I have to disagree. A baseball game that needed 24 innings (taking six hours and six minutes) before anyone scores is without question more boring than a Super Bowl match that did not even require overtime.
I have read about a high school basketball game played in Alabama in 1977 that ended with a score of 2-0. That would be almost as exciting as the Mets/Astros game.
Outback Igloo mate I live in the UK. I stayed up till like 1am onwards to watch a sick match up between Rams and Patriots. IT WASNT SICK. It was field goals and punts and one JUST ONE TD. So 5 Points, I know I'm a year late, but the longest Chess Game took a little over 24 hours. the 20 hour game you cited was the longest by move count. Both games were well over 200 Moves though. The 24 hour game was at least decisive.

I remember a baseball out here. Was a entire day. The game was waved off as a tie by one umpire, but the other one say not to. So both teams left but then the league called and said that the game was still on. 😂 I forgot who won

I don't know if this counts, but the 2016 Indycar race at Texas lasted 3 months. The original race was supposed to be run on June 11th but got postponed to the next day due to rain. Then they ran 71 of the 248 laps before it started raining again, and Indycar was forced to stop the race and postpone the last 170 laps until August 27th, almost 3 months later
Interesting Fact: Cal Ripken Jr. (Iron Man) and Wade Boggs (his socks were mostly red) were in that minor league baseball game before starting Hall of Fame careers. Also, a man had the single worst one-game hitting performance: 0 for 13

Just something to add to the tennis match. Only the 5th set was longer than the previous longer tennis match. That 5th set lasted 8h 11min while the previous longest match lasted 7h 1min.
You really have to be a dedicated fan to sit in the stands that long.

I went to University at Buffalo and when the 7OT game happened i lived in the apartments right next door to the games. I kept getting annoyed because the lights were on for hours. Didn't even realize a game still was going on after 7 ots.

IndyCar in 2016 had 3 rain delays added to the runtime of a 600km race at Texas Motor Speedway that was still technically considered an "active" competition, even while they completed other races at the subsequent rounds after the scheduled race date, all because the officials didn't want to throw the red flag, which would have concluded the race at lap 41. to satisfy the fans and refusing to give them a premature ending, the race ended up being delayed from June to late August, finally resuming on lap 71 of 248.

Longest MMA fight (I believe, unless it has somehow been topped): Kazushi Sakuraba defeating Royce Gracie at the PRIDE FC Grand Prix 2000..... 90 minutes of fighting!
They had modified the rules to allow unlimited rounds and no ref stoppages in the wake of Sakuraba beating Royce's brother Royler by ref stoppage, marking the first defeat a Gracie suffered in MMA.
And to add to the madness, Sakuraba went on and fought AGAIN that same night, fighting big ol' Ukrainian unit Igor Vovchanchyn for a further 15 minutes.
I met and trained with Royler and he talked in great length about the Sakuraba fight. He said when you win everyone is around you. When you lose, you are all alone. Do you train brother?
Helio Gracie fought many fights longer than that. Google it so I don't have to explain lol

My dad was in the longest planned baseball game. In his town for the US' bicentennial they played 200 innings that spanned a couple of days and every kid was assigned a time to come to play (e.g. 4-6, 9-10, and 3-5)
