    There is also a rule in the NHL, that if both goalies are hurt, or otherwise unable to play, anybody who is able to play, can play goalie, including fans, team staff, another player, arena staff, basically anybody who is able to participate.

      Well long ago, in the 1920s, teams only carried one goalie, the Rangers goalie got hurt and couldn't go on so Head Coach Lester Patrick donned the pads and played goal...with gray hair...in the Stanley Cup Finals...and won the game!

      The current NHL rule is that the home team must supply an emergency goalie (who is present at the game or can get to the game quickly) to be used by either team if the team's goalies are no longer able to play. I don't know what happens if he (or she) goes down subsequently.

    If a skater is tripped on a breakaway towards an empty net, his team is automatically awarded a goal

    • @mike8359

      Alex Tomasone not just tripped. If a penalty occurs on what would be a clear scoring opportunity, a goal is awarded. saw this in a stars game a few years ago. Benn was skating past a defender to retrieve the puck at around the blue line. Dman took an interference penalty and a goal was awardes to Benn

    I was at a NBA game back in 1981 or 1982 where the 5 player thing happened. It was Clippers at Sonics. There were lots of fights. The Clippers got down to 5 and then a Clipper was ejected. There was a Clipper who had fouled out and they were brought back.
    Funny thing about the whole situation was I had won the tickets to the game through the Sonics halftime mail bag question. The question I sent in was that same scenario.

    More obscure rules! Yay!
    In football and Baseball, I have a few obscure rules.
    1. If you block a PAT, and lateral it your own endzone, and get tackled in your own endzone, it's a point for the kicking team. So it's essentially an extra point made. This has never happened in the NFL but has happened twice in college football.
    2. If your opponent goes for two and is tackled in their own end zone, it's a 1 point defensive safety, meaning you just scored 1 point. This is almost impossible because you are on the opponents 2 yard line, so you'd have to be tackled all the way on the other side of the field. This rule means a score of a game COULD be 6-1. This has never happened in either college football nor the NFL.
    3. If a player goes out of bounds and touches a ball before it goes into the end zone, the ball is placed at the 40 yard line, EVEN IF the ball is still in play. Luckily this has never been called in an NFL game because it is so unfair.
    Baseball:
    1. If you catch the ball with your hat, all runners advance 3 bases, including the batter.
    2. If you bat out of order (Ex. After batter 1 batter 3 comes up to hit and does), an out will be enforced ONLY IF the opposing team catching it happening. The umpire is not allowed to enforce the rule only if the opposing team spots it.
    3. You are not allowed to talk with players on the opposing team. This rule is EXTREMELY rarely if not ever enforced, and it may be time to scrap the rule entirely.
    and BTW nice video

    this is slowly becoming the channel that I get most excited for new videos! keep up the good work! also I used to umpire minor league softball in Canada and it made me realize how many bizarre rules are needed because such bizarre things can happen. I only ump'd one summer and saw many plays that I had no idea what the call was especially with like 8 year olds. 3 people on one base? idk your all out. the pitch slowly rolled to the plate and the batter picked it up and through it back to the pitcher....I'll just pretend that didn't happen haha

    • @FivePointsVids
      @FivePointsVids  7 лет назад +4

    • @dougydoss6720
      @dougydoss6720 7 лет назад +6

      FivePoints Gaming yeah thats probably a perfect example of a rule that has weird details hidden in it. I always remembered that if someone brings a rule book onto the field they are automatically kicked out. I always hoped it happened. some coach comes walking out to protest a call and then I could say "well if you know the rules so well then you should know that bringing a rule book on the field means YOU ARE OUTTA HERE!"

    • @sincitysinner9239
      @sincitysinner9239 7 лет назад +3

      FivePoints Gaming That's something I've never even thought of, is it even possible? It just seems like it would be close to impossible to swing, recover, then swing again at a ball traveling close to 100mph. Have you ever seen it happen before? Are you talking about a batter getting 2 strikes on a single pitch? Like if the batter whiffs and then swings again even though the catcher has the ball? If that is what you're talking about, I will make up a rule for that scenario; If a batter swings at a ball that the catcher has, he shouldn't be playing baseball, lol. If a batter does swing twice at the same pitch, he should have to head directly to the locker room where a league official should be waiting to administer an immediate drug screening, because they would obviously have to be on one drug or another to swing at a ball no longer in flight, lol. Do you remember that one time when Randy Johnson threw a fastball and at the same time he released a dumbass bird flew past, directly in the path of the ball, and as soon as the ball hit it, there was an explosion of feathers? I wonder what the call was on that pitch? Is there a rule that deals with insane avian circumstances? Are the umpires allowed to erase pitches, or do they have to call each pitch either a ball or a strike? That is one of the most bizarre fucking plays in all of sports history. I still go back and watch that play every once in awhile because it is one of the most insanely bizarre things I have ever fucking seen. The odds of that ever happening again have to be astronomical, right? So many things had to line up perfectly for that to happen. The dumbass bird just happened to fly directly between the mound and home plate, The big unit wound up and released at exactly the right milisecond, and boom, the bird fucking exploded. There is no other word for it; that fucking bird exploded. When all the feathers were settled, there was no carcass, the bird was obliterated. Sorry to type out an essay in your comment section, but god damn that play was fascinating to me. I have never seen anything like that before and doubt I will ever see anything like it again.

  • @GlobalWarmingSkeptic
    @GlobalWarmingSkeptic 6 лет назад +1

    The reason there's been so few of these in history is because, for most of history, you had straight-on kickers on grass fields. Even a 40 yard FG wasn't automatic. By the time you got to the point where these kicks were even possible, they moved the posts back behind the endzone, making FGs that much longer.
    But now both the kickers, fields, and techniques are so refined and kicking is such an exact science that fair catch kicks have recently become more common. Where you only had 1 fair catch kick in 50 years, you now see them once every 4-5 years now. It's still hard because, coincidentally punters also get more distance, but in the event that (a) one is kicking the ball from very deep in their own territory and (2) the punter shanks the ball, this is now a part of the game.

  • @jamescollins4500
    @jamescollins4500 7 лет назад +6

    I liked the vid, but one point of clarification. The fair-catch/free-kick can also happen on a kick-off. Actually, it makes sense on a squib kick or an offside kick that goes horribly wrong and is caught on the wrong side of the 50. I thought I saw this in '16; the receiver was made a fair-catch, etc.

    NASCAR had an obscure rule they used in 2001. During the all star race, it started raining in turn 1 right as they started the race and 5 cars wrecked. Because it was a non point race, NASCAR officials let the drivers who wrecked to use backup cars after the race started. What’s even better is that 1 of those cars won. It has been the only time in recent memory they allowed that

      Interesting rule. I would assume neither would get to shoot because they are coincidental penalties. That's how I would do it in one of my games HOWEVER it is all but impossible to have that occur in the leagues I work. There is a very good possibility they would both get their penalty shots.

    One quirk with that MLB Triple Play rule: the infield would have to be playing back. According to the rule about being hit by a batted ball, the runner is only out if the ball has not yet passed an infielder, excluding the pitcher. If the infield is in, then the ball has passed an infielder, and the ball is simply dead, with the runner returning to 2nd base.

    Fair catch kick happened again for the panthers when they played in London 2019

  • @KingAlanI
    @KingAlanI 6 лет назад

    In the first 2016 Bills-Patriots game, New England was backed up to punt at the end of the 1st half. The punter bounced it along the sideline so Buffalo couldn't fair catch kick. Sometimes rules show their effect indirectly.

  • @mrmacross
    @mrmacross 5 лет назад

    Well, faircatch kicks haven't been attempted more often due to several reasons:
    1) You'd only attempt this at the end of a half or end of a game. Not many 2nd or 4th quarters end on a punt. You're also only going to attempt this if you only had time for one play, timed or untimed down.
    2) If it's the end of a half, the punt would have to be deep enough in the kicking team's territory to make the ensuing faircatch kick reasonably close.
    3) If it's at the end of the game, the kicking team would obviously be winning or tied, and the spread in points would have to be 3 points or fewer, and once again the kicking team would have to be deep enough in its own territory to make the ensuing kick close enough to be makeable.
    4) If it's at the end of the game, and the leading team is up by more than 2 points, and is deep enough in its own territory, they'll probably waste time and take a safety rather than risk a short punt that puts the other team in FG range. John Harbaugh demonstrated that wasting time and taking a safety is an effective strategy in such situations.
    5) As the video points out, if you're too far away to make this kick reasonably makeable, you're essentially just giving the other team a free opportunity to run back the kick like a kickoff. Kind of risky at the end of the first half, or the end of the second half if the game is tied.
    6) Finally, probably some coaches don't even know this rule exists.
    So it has little to do with stupidity unless you're attempting a 90-yard kick or something ridiculous.

    I thought if you're down to less than 5 players on the court, the team is allowed to look to the stands. But that scenario actually happened in a Maryland game with that Sexton dude in it. They continued the 2nd half with 7 mins le$t down 2 players to a full compliment of players due to ejections. And they almost came back.

    In fact, the longest field goal in high school, a 68-yarder by Dirk Birgognone, was one of those free kick field goals. While I can't confirm this, I'm guessing the majority of the really long FGs at the HS level were of the free kick variety. I do know the longest FG kicked by a Georgia HS student was a free kick FG.

    The Fair catch kick can be traced back to it's Rugby Roots. Let me explain
    In the early form of Rugby football (now known as Rugby Union) one of the ways to score was a goal from a Mark. Where if you caught the ball when it was in the air have both feet on the ground, without the ball hitting the ground and yelled "MARK". You had marked the ball at that spot. Now this play was possible anywhere on the field by both sides for either sides kick. Afterwards the ball had to be kicked, but this meant you can now try to kick it for a goal without the other team interrupting the kick attempt.
    While both codes of Rugby did have this way of scoring and marking the ball. Rugby League no longer has any way of a "mark" and Rugby Union limits the marks only for the defending team inside there 22 meters and you can not score from it.

    Here's one: the "intentionally dropped line drive" rule - in baseball, if a fielder intentionally drops a line drive with a runner on first and not two out, the batter is out (similar to the infield fly rule). The reason is similar to the reason for the infield fly rule; it stops a fielder from seeing where the runner on first is and then either catching it and then doubling off the runner, or dropping it and throwing to second (and from second to first) for a double play.

    4.03 actually enforced once in a Korean baseball game. Away team want to intentionally walk batter from home team, and they feared about if pitcher make a wild pitch and lose(runner on 2nd,3rd). So they put one player behind catcher. And umpire call it illegal, and force the player who behind catcher back to where he originally at.

    Fun rule in baseball. If a runner was to go home (whether it’s a force or steal doesn’t matter) and not touch home plate, and the umpire notices but the defending team does not appeal or tag home plate, the run counts. Usually the umpire doesn’t say anything he just will stare at home plate as to hint the other team but usually doesn’t make a call.

    I got another quirky baseball rule. Should a balk be called, and the hitter puts a ball in play, the ball is considered live. The balk is negated if the runners are able to advance a base. So worst case scenario, all runners advance a base and you get to return to the box to continue the at-bat.

    A rule oversight (that was since fixed) was the 12 men on defence penalty in the nfl being a live ball penalty.
    In a final minute hail mary situation the defending team could flood the field with players and force the offense to waste clock time in exchange for just a 5 yard penalty.
    The offense would ultimately get one real chance for the hail mary as the game couldnt end on the penalty but it would be worth it to nullify potentially multiple attempts in exchange for a few yards of gain.
    It happened, not this extreme, on the pats final drive against the giants in the 2012 superbowl. It was closed in the offseason by making the 12 men foul a dead ball foul.

    Most casual baseball fans think the ball is dead after the infield fly rule is called. 'Taint so. A runner can be tagged out if he is off base or (as you mentioned) he is struck with the fly ball while not on base.
