    Truly unbreakable: B.J. Gray won a game with the fewest number of pitches thrown, 0. He came into an inning with two outs and a runner on first. He picked him off, the Orioles took the lead in their at-bat, and he didn't return to the mound.

    I was there at Dodger Stadium when Tatis hit two grand slams in the same inning. At the time no one really knew what it meant because everyone in the stadium was so shocked to see one, let alone two, grand slams in the same inning. I was sitting on the second level on the third base side.
    Despite what you may have heard about Dodger fans, at least two thirds of the stadium stood up an applauded for Tatis after this feat, including myself. Clearly it was something special.
    It wasn't until about the fifth inning when the news about the record started to be spread around. A few people were listening to the radio (I'm assuming Vin Scully) and heard it.
    Don't get me wrong, it was an awful game to watch if you were a Dodger fan, but my friend and I figured we got our money's worth. At least we got to applaud for something that day.

I've heard unconfirmed stories of guys hitting as may as 3-4 birds in a game back 1890s-1930s... including one story of Rogers Hornsby hitting three with the same line drive. But of course, there's no video from back then and most of the stories come second or even third hand.

    I would say that most records held by Pete Rose are fairly unbreakable, but this one stands out to me as being so absurdly unreachable that I cannot see it being remotely reached by anyone.
    Most career winning games played- 1,972
    100 win seasons by a team are pretty rare, these days.
    A player having 19 straight years of 100 wins, would still be 73 wins short of breaking it.

Rose's record of at least 500 starts at 5 different positions (1b, 2b, 3b, rf, lf) will still be around after some of these records are broken. It will stand the test of time because people aren't versatile like that anymore. Star players that are around for a long time play maybe one or two positions that's it.

      You need a great both-sides hitter to break that record. Your back will not be optimal after 2,000+ G and 10,000+ AB batting from one side only. Rose 4,000+ hits and Ryan’s 5,000 SO are the kind of records that money can’t break.

    • @strongside4565

    I'd argue that the best chance someone would have to break the 5 HRs in two games would be if A) the guys in front of him weren't getting on base and B) the guy behind him was also hitting bombs, and C) the guy was also a fast baserunner in a close game. All of those things would make it more likely that the pitcher would still be willing to pitch to him and not walk him.

    In the case of the case of Van der Meer's 2 straight no-hitters, NO ONE will come close to breaking that. The one pitcher I actually saw getting close was Jake Arrieta in 2015, he pitched a no-no against the Dodgers and took a perfect game to the 7th inning on his next start. That is way too difficult to break.

    People who say Billy Hamilton has a chance at beating Ricky Henderson's 130 stolen base record obviously don't know what it takes to steal a base. Yes, you have to be fast. But you have to be smart as well. Not only on the base path, but at the plate too. You have to have a good OBP.

    No, they would not walk the guy after a bunch of home runs in two games. Weird things happen over small sample sizes. Teams are not very susceptible to the hot hand fallacy here in the analytical era of our game.
    It's the same with the shift. Sometimes guys beat it. Sometimes they beat it twice or three times in a row. That's irrelevant to the trend. The fielders will still shift for the guy's next at bat.

    • @Unlitedsoul
      @Unlitedsoul 6 лет назад

      And yet.. we see it happen all the time. Just last year the Cubs began walking Harper every time he came to the plate after he hit 3 HR in the first 2 games of a series. That's just one example.

  • @jerrybrownell3633
    @jerrybrownell3633 6 лет назад +1

    Jim Palmer had 268 career wins and eight - 20 win seasons and never gave up a grand slam home run. That would be
    hard to break. In more recent history Giancarlo Stanton has struck out 5 times in a game twice this year all ready. He may
    do it several more times this year. That might be an unbreakable record as 95% of players never come to bat 5 times in one
    game.

  • @DrBeef216

    This is precisely the reason why the old time hitters aren't nearly as impressive. They were facing starters pitching complete games on three days rest. Babe Ruth was hitting 50-60 home runs off of perpetually gassed pitchers. No fireballing closers, no calculated approach to pitch counts, bullpens, etc, weaker average pitching, etc.
    There are a LOT of other reasons that are more publicized - segregation, evolution of the sport, evolution of the athlete, etc. But this one is huge, and no one seems to talk about it.
    Also, Rickey Henderson would never steal 130 bases today. With the replay killing a lot of would-be steals 30 years ago, he wouldn't have been nearly as high.
    However, the analysts do get it wrong regarding the value of steals with prodigious stealers. The idea that the dude is going to constantly run on you is in the pitcher's head, and distracts him, and that effect can't be quantified by any data.

      With that logic, Rickey doesn't own the stolen base record and it becomes even more impossible to break. 138 SB by Hugh Nicol in 1887. Yes Bob Feller is another impossible record, good call. It's funny because even if a pitcher could last that long nowadays you're only getting 33-35 starts so they would fall short on that alone.

      The statisticians are uncovering the true nature of the game. Today's baseball teams are getting closer and closer to the optimal strategy, and that's exciting.
      I don't know about you, but I'm glad my team isn't doing things like they were done in the game's stone age. Base stealing usually decreases the expected runs my team scores in the inning. Why would I want them to do that?
      There's no going back to the way things were done before. Pandora's box has been opened.

      I wouldn't go as far as saying that since screwballs, sliders and curveball have been in the game since almost it's inception. also relievers like Andrew Miller tend to throw their sliders 60% of the time in 70+ innings per season, whereas starters throw them at much lower rates. but the ferocity of the delivery is where I believe the problem lies

      Greg C "It is possible to win 30 games a year for 17 years." Yet there hasn't been a 30-win season since 1968 by Deny McClain did it through 41 games. Before that, you have to go all the way back to Dizzy Dean in 1934 who went 30-7 in 50 games. You say that it's possible... but not really when it's rare a starting pitcher takes the mound more than 34 times a year, and that could drop as more teams are using a swing man to start 10-15 games a year and cutting down starts for the rest of their rotation. I mean, this only applies with the very most literal definition of "possible".
      Personally, I don't think anyone has any chance at all of breaking either of Cy's records. The best pitcher of all time, Walter Johnson, managed a record of 417-279 in 21 seasons, but he didn't pitch in half of his team's games like Cy Young did. We've also entered an era where 300 wins isn't even a probable milestone with 5+ man rotations, quick-draw DL trips, pitch limits, and excellerated bull pen strategies.

    • @Unlitedsoul
      @Unlitedsoul 6 лет назад +1

      Jerry Mcmanus I get what he was trying to say, but there's nothing relative about his statement. Neither of those records have any chance of being broken in the modern era of baseball... and for the same exact reason. No one will ever have an honest manner of reaching either of them. So, they're pretty much equally unbreakable.

      L Droppers 59 is not 61, and 61 home runs for a non cheater has stood for 57 years, so no it won't. The only way the record is going to get broken as if there is some rule change in baseball. Hell, the record has even withstood 27 years of the Colorado Rockies being in the league.

    I think the number 1 record WILL be beat. 3 consecutive no-nos. I predict there may be a pitcher than throws 10 no-nos in a season. There was a kid in one of the former USSR countries that had a unique delivery that allowed him to throw over 115 mph. Yes, he blew his arm out before he made it to college but it proved it is possible. And then there are knuckleball throwers. Someone will improve on that. And, if/when the league expands the strike zone to where it originated and not the tiny zone it is now... someone will master sliders that cut the corners and add in disappearing changeups. And if that person also has a 115 mph... come on. And add in the fans desire for power hitters. There could be huge hitters all down the roster that cannot hit outside pitches or high pitches because their bodies are so bulky they can't move that way.

    • @AzureRaven2

      Way late reply, but no one who throws that fast is having any career in the majors. Because of exactly what you just mentioned. Ligaments just can't withstand that kind of strain. He'd blow his arm out pitching 3 straight complete games with heat like that. And again, complete games themselves are just rare these days. People will tie it, no one's beating it.
