- Jeff and Sarah visit Pacific View Memorial Park to find the graves of John Wayne, Gene Autry's co-star June Storey, Disney animator Rudolf Ising, James Roosevelt (son of FDR), movie star and model Jeanne Carmen and rock star Kevin Dubrow. They will also check out the reports of where basketball star Kobe Bryant and daughter are buried.

I had the privilege of meeting John Wayne while he was standing in his driveway, I was visiting his next-door neighbor. I forgot the small talk. I was a young Marine at the time who had a friend that lived next door to John Wayne. I do remember these words as I got out of my truck with my friends. The Duke asks him, " Who is that young fellow with you?" We talked with him for about 15 min's in that driveway, now I brag about it now and then, LOL! That was in 1977, I,m an old man now. :)
Fantastic story! Too bad you didn’t have a cell phone camera to document the occasion! Thanks for sharing! What a memory!
I m not sure that would have been respectful back then? I met many actors and actresses then, I hung out at the Bob Hope Hollywood USO. and the movie studios. actors back then would invite Marines to hang out with them. One day I hope that you do a video on El Toro Air Base and the Hollywood canteen you cannot find much about either of these places on youTube. { My nephew was a child actor. } Thank you History Hunters.
I graduated high school in 1975 .... So yeah I know... Me to.. 😉
wow jerry great memories
What a fantastic memory and The Duke was honoring your service and we do as well, thank you.
I'm 100% on John Wayne's side of things. I wish he were here today. We need many more like him.
He was an actor!
Never be another John Wayne. 😢
@@oneseeker2 he was an amazing human…..do a little research and you will find his good works. Not just an actor…..
Amen , great comment 👍🇺🇸
it’s alright to recognize his contributions, but it’s also important to recognize his faults.
“ I believe in white supremacy until the blacks are educated to a point of responsibility”
“There were great numbers of people who needed new land, and the Indians were selfishly trying to keep it for themselves”
“I’ve directed two pictures, and I gave the blacks their proper position. I had a black slave in The Alamo”
^all direct quotes. the guy was problematic.
Modest grave for the Duke. I think that spoke about his character. Always liked John Wayne.😁👍
You should've seen his parties though
I enjoyed watching John Wayne movies. I am so happy John Wayne accepted Jesus as his Saviour and Lord before leaving the earth. He is a born again christian with Jesus in Heaven. God is El Shaddai.
Thanks for visiting John Wayne's grave, this June it will be fourty two years since he's gone and truly missed
Yes, John Wayne is still truly missed.
John Wayne was a good actor, I remember my older family members sitting down watching he's films..
We miss Him
wow has it really been that long, he was one cool man
John Wayne was a big hero to my dad so anything I see of John Wayne reminds me of my father I sure do miss him.....
Thanks for putting out these videos Monday through Friday I spend my lunch break watching you guys!!!!
Thank you for paying homage to man who believed in our country. Your words were well spoken and received by your fans. It surprised me his burial marker was ordinary for being such a big star. Very humbling. Thanks!
Thank you very much, Tom! We all need to speak out against the things that will lead to our nation’s downfall.
@@jbenziggy Amen!
I love knowing where John Wayne is buried. I was in basic training when he passed away. For reading part of the headlines, I ended up having to do 100 push-ups for reading the article. Those were the only push-ups that I didn't mind doing. I love all of the " Dukes " movies.
Well done, well said Jeff! John Wayne was a true American patriot. That is definitely a beautiful cemetery. Thanks for sharing! 🇺🇸🚜👍
Well done and well said Jeff. 👍
His memory will always live on. Amen.
Lol
Thank you for visiting and showing us the Duke's grave and paying respect to man and what he stood for. I'm sorry to see someone desecrated his grave by gluing that coin to his marker and people should learn to leave things alone and not assume that everyone needs to believe as they do. I do know for the longest time there was no marker to his grave and he didn't want his gravesite to be turned into a shrine and an attraction. I was in 8th grade when he passed and it was like losing a relative you knew and cared about and I was glad to have grown up with him as a role model in moves and television. May he always rest in peace.

Since John Wayne is such a larger than life figure I expected him to have a more elaborate final resting place. I like it that he doesn't though. Somehow this is actually more fitting.
Maybe he didn't want a big elaborate Stone
@@RStark-ek7mh Nicely put 👍
It was many years after he passed before he had one at all.
@@la_old_salt2241 That comment is correct. I visited the site 25 years ago and was told it wasn’t marked because they were afraid someone might dig up or disturb his gravesite, so they decided to leave it unmarked.
Thankyou for showing us John Wayne's Grave. My mum, bless her was a big JW fan..absolutely loved him. I remember the day we heard he had died, it was June 11th 1979. That was the day I started working from leaving school. My mum was in the kitchen when they announced it on the radio, I heard her quietly crying 😥 He was a Mountain of a Man! A True Legend!

My grandparents married June 13th, 1964, so June 13th 1979 was their "Crystal anniversary" (as they call it in Germany) and my grandpa, who loved western raised his glass and said sth like "Rest in Peace John". My grandma bought flowers the next day and gave it to my grandpa thinking that someone at his workplace died.
John Wayne's grave was unmarked for almost 20 years because his family was concerned about grave robbers. Perhaps Koby Bryant's family has the same concerns and will reveal where his is buried in 20 years.
@@RStark-ek7mh Unfortunately, they also steal the markers.
@@RStark-ek7mh lol. If there were money or power in the grave robbing Ovomit would be doing it.....and getting away with it

Thank you for doing this video! My mom adored John Wayne. She had a sticker on her car that said “God Bless John Wayne!”. She grew up in Bluff, Utah and was able to go watch them film Stagecoach and Fort Apache. My grandpa and his horse were Extras in Fort Apache! I have pictures of my mom and grandma with John Wayne. They both have always said he was the kindest man and went out of his way to mingle with the locals!
What a wonderful event in their lives meeting the Duke! Someone surmised that all of the cast and crew of one of those desert location films died of cancer and they suspect it was related to exposure to the nuclear test radiation detonated nearby. Did you hear that too?
@@jbenziggy sadly, yes. My mother was a downwinders and passed away 7 years ago from pancreatic cancer.
@@jbenziggy The thing about all the people on the film, " The Conqueror" was though there was nuclear testing there, all the people from that film that died of cancer were smokers from what I have read.
Absolutely true! He walked up to me and my friend in Houston at the Enron parking lot, the building where he was filming (1968), "The Hellfighters", the story of Red Adair (firefighter). His opening line was, "Hello, ladies!".... in his booming voice with a big smile. A great memory.
I know the territory, used to raft the San Juan past those red hills and Mexican Hat near Bluff where those movies were shot. I was watching one of his colorized movies where they showed a military wagon train crossing a river , thought it looked familiar then I saw Mexican Hat in the background so I knew why it looked familiar to me. Made my day.
I like John Wayne's perspective on being American. Seems we could use a lot of that right now.
You are so right Andy always said it so simple
You mean the guy who stayed home during WWII while other actors and sports figures left their professions to go fight for America?
Yeah bit more division just what America needs.

@@chasjohn57 Yes. His wife said he overcompensated for that by being a patriot the rest of his life. It was also said that he was bisexual so I'm sure some people would criticize him for that.
I don't judge a man based upon his decisions at one time but more about how he developed as an individual throughout his life. Some wouldn't have even let the lack of service bother them but it bothered the Duke.
It seems to me that this flawed individual still had many redeeming qualities.
Discovered your video clip today, and watched it because I'm a HUGE John Wayne fan. I thoroughly loved him. My father raised me God and Country and he watched the Westerns when I was growing up. I consider myself an American who happens to be Black. God knew where He wanted my roots to be, and it's here in the Most blessed Nation outside of Israel. I've often said that in my world there were 3 that walked on water Jesus, John Wayne and my daddy 💜 I had the treat of doing to the John Wayne birth place museum, and want to go to Monument Valley. So, thank you for posting this. You've made my day. #God bless #GodBlessAmerica
I shook The Dukes hand in 1974 when he was Grand Marshal in the Rose Parade !!
That would have been a memorable moment for sure! I saw Gregory Peck in the 1989 Rose Parade but didn’t get as close as you did to Wayne!
What an honor that must have been.
Wow. Nice.
Awesome
@Lauren Alexandra no but we have a Facebook page!
My Dad was a hospital administrator for a nursing home in Newport Beach, where John's mother was a resident. I'm not sure who has the pic now, but it's John, his mother , and my Dad
I had to look up his parents after reading your comment! Thanks! I had given no thoughts to his parents but his mom and dad are in different Southern California cemeteries.
What did your Dad say about meeting John Wayne?
Like what was he like in person?
Thank you Jeff and Sarah. I was a little surprised at the simplicity of the Duke's grave site and there being no reference to Marion Morrison. I am assuming that this is the way John Wayne would have wanted it and his children did their best to honor him as in life.🤞
Bob Hope has a grand gravesite but John’s is very common and he is buried next to complete strangers. I was stunned at the simplicity too!
He is not buried next to complete strangers! He is buried next to his best friends son.his best friend was Chick Iverson and he and John were like brothers and Chick HAD him buried in his family plot because he handled a lot of John’s personal affairs before and after John died.
Yes. Marion Morrison also played football for the University of Southern California. I didn't care for his politics, but you can't beat his Westerns. Thanks Jeff. You're a good history hunter.
@@ethanabrams6250 You are correct. Chick Iverson was my Father-in-Law,and his son Chick Jr. is buried between them. Yes,They were great friends and neighbors. Chick was a pall-bearer at the Dukes funeral.
@@jbenziggy You could not be more incorrect.John Wayne is buried next to one of his best friends,Chick Iverson, the infamous Newport Beach car dealer and his son, Chick Jr. Chick Iverson was my Father-in-Law. Thanks for sharing this article with us this morning Jeff.
JOHN WAYNE, he was a true American Patriot, IMHO. I know there are many people out there that would debate me on that but, they're entitled to their opinions as much as I am. He was a Legend and I still have that opinion.
Thanks again and, be safe out there.
Stan
Like the patriots who attacked democracy, he was a racist, bigot and mysogynist.
Wayne’s own epitaph for himself was the Spanish phrase “Feo, Fuente y Formal”, meaning “He was ugly, strong and had great dignity”.
It was 20 years before Duke Wayne had a marker. The family was concerned for someone desecrating it.
And then someone did by gluing an unwanted coin to it.
His last movie was "The Shootist." Great movie with Lauren Bacall and Jimmy Stewart. Great way to end his movie career.
I would very much like to see that one again
My brother-in-law worked at Warner brothers studios in the 70’s. He got my sisters on the set of the shootist how cool is that. They met the Duke.
His movies are my favorites all of them. He was a great real man. Need more like him.

Actually quite sad movie, knew what movie mean’t. We lost a big part of Americana forever, what a legacy.
I thought my Hero John Wayne would of had a grand grave stone. My Dad was a Glass and Screen guy and replaced a window at John Wayne's home or retreat at Balboa Island. My parents divorced when I was 5 and my dad wasn't around so I latched onto Mr. Wayne cause to me he was the ultimate man and strong figure I desired. I wrote him at 8 yrs old and send him my picture. He wrote me back and sent me an Autographed Photo. When I was 12 he sent me another without asking and said, "Courage My Boy!". I too was crushed when he passed, and still have reverence for the man. Courage is being scared to death but saddling up anyway~ John Wayne
Very touching comments! Every boy needs a role model! Did you keep the signed photos?
@@jbenziggy Yes! And a book he later sent me about him growing up in leather bound that today is like new.

I don’t think we will ever see another John Wayne again.
And it’s bitter sweet because it would be nice to have these sort of great actors back or new ones.
But this will make people like The Duke live forever and never be forgotten or replaced.
@@mitch5077 Hello
Thank you. You have a great story with him.
Wise words from John Wayne. Your walks through the cemeteries yield many interesting stories. I wasn't expecting the Quiet Riot connection.
“Has it ever struck you that life is all memory, except for the one present moment that goes by you so quick you hardly catch it going?”― Tennessee Williams
So true!
I'm surprised that Wayne's grave marker is not as elaborate as other celebrities. I guess as you mentioned the cost of such a tribute would be expensive. But since he was "the duke" it would have been appropriate. My same thought is that of Sinatra 's grave marker. Not reflective of his contribution to entertainment.
I have the same thought of Chris Cornells grave marker. First of all it looks like a foot marker not a headstone second Johnny Ramone isnt even buried there and he has a better headstone and a statue. Chris has a statue in Seattle that doesn't look like him.
...you should check out ,Charle Bronson's, grave site...simple, similar with an iron armchair, on the grave site to sit on,and a beautiful inscription on his grave.
That's sad that someone glued the coin on his grave. It's not theirs to do that. If they just left it there then it would have been fine. Sarah found an interesting marker with the one that had no date of death. Great job on finding some great final resting places!
Thanks Rhetty! I enjoyed your recent live cemetery video in Oklahoma! Tragic story about those track kids!

My parents are buried in Pacific View approximately 200 ft North of John Wayne,a grave site.
And I agree with him 100 percent!!!
That was very interesting. John Wayne spoke his mind, whether people agreed with him, or not, didn't appear to matter to him. I am not familiar with the ladies, but apparently they did make quite a few movies. All research does indicate or make it appear that Kobe Bryant and his young daughter are buried in the area you were in. Once again, thank you, Jeff and Sarah, for your research and visit to this cemetery.

Shame on the jerk who glued something on the stone .
Yes, it wasn't there in January when I visited John Wayne's grave.
Desecrating a grave or headstone is so juvenile and illegal.

June Storey was so pretty

For John Wayne fans I recommend the Randy Roberts and James Olson biography written in 1995. It is better than the recent Scott Eyman book. During the shooting of "The Alamo", Wayne was smoking 200 cigarettes a day. (I'd say he lit 200 cigarettes a day, and maybe smoked half that.) What is interesting to me is how many of Hollywood's old stars prematurely aged- probably from the smoking, and drinking, and speed (They used it recklessly to lose weight fast). Spencer Tracy was 67 when he died and looked over 80. Bogart was 58 and looked in his late 70's. Ward Bond -57, and so forth.... A nice video from our friends at History Hunters. I wonder when California is going to start charging for cemetery visits? And then add another tax.....
I've also heard the cancers were caused by filming in areas where atomic bombs were tested.

I hope not. We already have 9.5% sales tax, gas around $5.25 a gallon and $1,400 a month for a studio apartment in Los Angeles unless you rent a dump in a depressing junk neighborhood where you have to worry about crime. 🙁
Looks like Sarah was the only brave person to set foot in the water.. I was disappointed that John Wayne did not have a monument instead of a marker. J.W.'s views are not popular in this increasingly crazy times when people are constantly blaming others for their own failures in life.
