Ahhh now I see why my lamp won’t ignite with paraffin oil and needs a spirit based fuel. Thanks! And I can say you’re 100% correct that old paraffin oil will almost ruin a lamp’s inner workings if they gum up. I had to use isopropyl alcohol to break it down and it worked very well at that. Perhaps that’s why the old owner wanted to sell it! 😊 Thanks again…
Hi just been watching most of your videos excellent work you have done just a question what battery do I need to light my protector SL lamp ? Thanks for your time Ian
Hi Ian, the battery I use for my SL is a Lithium Ion 3.7v battery. The wire I use for the filament is Kathal 24AWG, I think this wire is used in vapes but the wire works well with the battery. If you use Facebook then there are a few Miners Lamps groups and a few people have made small lighting devices for these lamps.
@@andyparton6680 if it’s a Koehler lamp like the one in the video these take a thicker flint. I use flints from welding guns. I think they are about 3mm thick.
I tried, and it's far too volatile, it burns badly with a blueish fame that give little light and is too hot for the globes and soldering, it's almost like gas, and security wise, not a good idea, unless you don't care to set your house on fire or injure yourself (fire & explosion with the vapors that leaks from all over the place) I tried as an experience to know what i'm talking about. . Use colman fuel, zippo fluid, naphta, or the stuff showed on the vid, all the same; Don't try gazoline either, I did. Keep safe Cheers
@@stealer59 to be honest I don't know. For a Type 6 you need a petroleum spirit fuel. This is so the flint spark can ignite the spirit to light the wick. The ideal fuel is one with a low flash point.

Can these lamps burn 100 percent ethanol alcohol, methyl alcohol, alcohol stove fuel and 99-100 percent isopropyl alcohol ??? Thanks vf
I will be honest and say I do not know as I have not tried different fuels in these lamps.
The different fuels have always made me wonder if they did in the days of old. Those time were really a time of that anything went. @@LampBoy3583
are these normal flints to strike ?
there is a lamp like this(333) on the way to me but i dont know wich flints i need 😉

Hi will Primus Power Fuel be ok in my type 6 relighter? Thanks.

@LampBoy3583 hi I tried Primus Power Fuel it lights up ok and burns fine.
@@stealer59 that's great! I hope you enjoy seeing your lamp lit 🔥
Does the upol stink the house?
I'm basically looking for a spirit fuel that doesn't smell out the house
There is an odour to it, if you are lighting several lamps together you will stink your house out.
I use citronella oil is that ok
Citronella is fine for a lamp that burns paraffin.
@@LampBoy3583 it’s an eccles Gr6s protector lamp thanks a thing of beauty
@@timothy6283 do not use citronella in this lamp then. A GR6S burns spirit such as naphtha, Coleman's or cigarette lighter fluid.
