Hi happy New Year having big problem with wick and fuel tank would love your advice I do have a friend who would be able to do welding and other tech repairs to bottom plate if you could show how this is done thank you Tim
@@timothycope8493 hello and happy new year! Unfortunately I don't know how to solder so I can't give any advice about this. If you are on Facebook there are a few miners lamps groups where there will be people that know how to solder the fuel cell.
Very informative video lampboy. I have an igniter stripped down and busy cleaning it . The wedge in my igniter may be slightly worn in comparison to yours so will have to hope it sparks like yours when re- assembled.
Great looking lantern. Why do I want one . 😂😂😂
These used to be a lot more common and people would use them running trot lines at night. I was very impressed by the amount of soft yellow light and the wide even illumination pattern. It was very effective. I recently saw one in a gun shop, they use them to blacken sights.
@@BobJohnson-xg9ng I've taken a few carbides underground in one lead mines, the light is really good, like you say, a nice soft yellow light.
Is the brass flame adjustment tube that goes up and down in the gr6s a different diameter to on a gr6 lamp??? As my new stainless tube won’t go over the flame adjuster tube????
@@jasonga I believe the GR6 and the GR6S wick tube are the same diameter but to be honest I've have not seen an original GR6 lamp that's not been modified. The Type 6 lamp will not fit a GR6S lamp as the outer wick tube is too wide for the stainless steel tube.
@ I have a genuine untouched GR6 and the wick tube is the same diameter as the type 6… the GR6S must have a smaller diameter tube so it fits into the stainless tube…..I always end up with the weird stuff… lol
Ah thanks very much for doing this vid, I had a feeling there was a correct way the spring and flint wheel shaft went…. Sadly my main spring is broken, I think some monkey hands had been fiddling or an armchair expert!!!🤣. I take it these use the larger size flint as well??? Once again thanks
@@jasonga that's such a shame that the spring is broken. Springs can be bought from a guy in Slovakia that fit the continental Wolf's, I am not sure if they fit the Wolf 7RMBS lamp, or try miners lamps.co.uk as Gary has quite a few spares. The flint in these lamps is the larger flint, 3mm in diameter.

Really helpful video that, from someone who knows what he is talking about, unlike a lot of info out there. I've had a type 6 for a few years now but I don't light it much, when I do I use Coleman fuel, is there any other fuel out there that is suitable?
@@patrickshaw7983 thank you for your kind comments. There are other fuels available. Cigarette lighter fluid is one. I use Upol fast panel wipe, but this is only available in 5 litres so not really worth it if you only have a small collection of lamps. Coleman's is good but like everything else the price is creeping up unless you find a bargain some where.

What wick do I need dor mt type 6 and SL lamp?
@@GarionBrooks-yo5if you need 7mm or 1/4inch round cotton wick. It can be found on eBay in various lengths.
@LampBoy3583 thank you. I think I've found some. Can't seem to find any of the stiff/firm wick.
Any chance you could do a video about the complicated RMBS igniter??? How to strip and reassemble it as the spring arrangement is difficult to repair….. and a look at how the wick adjuster works…..please?!!
@@jasonga I will do a video over Christmas. The flint lighter is tricky at first but once you've done a couple it gets easier.
@ your telling me it’s tricky!!! I’m not even going to attempt it till I’ve seen the video!!! It was all together wrong when I got it, it’s all there now, I’ve had to rethread a couple bits and make new springs but it’s all there ready to reassemble!!! Thank you so much for doing it!! Looking forward to it!
@ I've posted a video about the flint igniter. I've not had chance to do the wick adjuster yet.
Sound was on this time another great video
Dont you find its a pain to light type 6 at times?
@@rplant2259 they can be a pain at times. The lamp always lights better when it's warm.
Great video , very helpful . Thanks.
Um, why does some of the type 6’s have a brass bonnet? I ask as I found one still in its box but has a brass bonnet and not a stainless one
@@jasonga Usually the brass bonnet type 6 lamps was sold to members of the public as momentos. Some pits did use the brass bonnet lamps but not many.
@ ah I see that would explain it, so as I can see not many on eBay then are genuine pit lamps? Every type 6 I look at is either all brass or doesn’t have a middle air shut off!!!
@@jasonga so, there are genuine Type 6 lamps with the shut off ring on eBay. These lamps was used by the old coal board. There are many type 6 lamps on eBay that I call presentation lamps. These lamps can have either stainless steel or brass bonnets but don't have a magnetic lock or middle shut off ring. These presentation lamps are still allowed underground as they met the requirements of the mining regulations, these lamps could be bought direct from the manufacturer and there are many of these lamps on eBay.
@@LampBoy3583 ah that makes sense thanks
How to you clean or change the fuel cell felt of cotton if the wrong fuel has been used??
@@jasonga hi, on most Protectors it's a big job as the bottom of the fuel cell needs to be unsoldered to change the felt.
@ thanks for both reply’s, to be honest I thought that’s what had to be done! I cans do it ok but what a job!! Also which would you recommend to by? Gr6s, 6rs or a type 6..?
@ all those lamps are nice for any collection. The GR6S was the replacement for the Type 6 lamp back in the 60's. The 6RS is basically a Type 6 but with a remote sample port in the bonnet. All are nice lamps.
@@LampBoy3583 thanks very much for your reply’s…, I’m new to these lamps but already have a collection of oil lamps. Hi, love your videos, do you know where I can get parts for the Wolf lamps?? My FS has a broken wick adjuster and another I have has the knob and shaft wick adjuster missing? Thanks
@@jasonga hi, many thanks for your kind comments. I don't know where you get those parts from to be honest. Only thing I can suggest is to buy another FS lamp for the parts. Sounds excessive but that's the only way I can think of repairing your lamps.

Hi, love your channel with the very useful videos. I have a CT33A and have managed to dismantle and clean it and I want to use it but it doesn't have a wick; do you know what size wick the lamp takes?. Thanks.
@@g.g.dunnitt9181 thank you for your kind comments. The wick on this lamp is a 10mm flat wick. The wick is quite thin so the stuff that I've found has worked is using 10mm cotton webbing. This stuff is not as thick as normal wick. Normal flat wick is too thick for the wick holder in this lamp.
Hi ...me again I have managed to get My lamp to strike properly due to the screw that holds the spring and flint under tension was not turned in to create adequate pressure on the flint ,all sorted thanks for your kind assistance
@@walterbrink9421 I am happy you have sorted your lamp, any more question and I will be happy to do my best to answer them.
@@LampBoy3583 Thank you ,I will be looking to get more of these lamps over the December period.
Hi ...me again what flint you use in your lamps as the zippo flint is not working .
@@walterbrink9421 in the Protectors I use zippo flints. Your old flint might be rotten so needs removing and replacing with a new flint.
I have several different types of oil lamps-duplex lamps (I call them Parlour Lamps) and pigeon lamps and use a refined paraffin clear lamp oil in them and it works well. I now have a Protector Type6 relighter and I can get it to light by dripping lighter fuel on the wick before closng the lamp and lighting it, having filled the oil vessel with the lamp oil. It lights OK but then the flame gradually dies down and goes out-is this because the clear lamp oil just won't work in a Type6 relighter? Now, my main question, can I safely use Upol in my other lamps, most of which have flat wicks? The lamp oil I use burns with a yellowish flame but does the Upol burn with a whiter flame, or still yellow?. Thanks for all your very interesting videos.
@@g.g.dunnitt9181 hello, the Protector Type 6 lamp is a spirit burning lamp and burns spirit such as Upol, cigarette lighter fluid, Coleman's etc. The flint lighting device on the lamp will not light the lamp oil, this is why you need to put a few drops of spirit on the wick to light it. If you have a Type 6 that has the middle air shut off ring then make sure this is open when lighting the lamp, also as soon as the lamp is lit turn down the flame so the flame is small. A large flame consumes the air in the lamp (when the lamp is cold) and extinguishes the flame. For your flat wick lamps I wouldn't use Upol with them, they sound like oil burning lamps. If you put spirit fuel in an oil burning lamp the spirit heats up and the vapours can explode and blow the flame out.
Good afternoon a bit of advice please,I have just purchased a wolf fs lamp of eBay.What I would like to know is do you just add enough oil to saturate the foam or have free liquid in the reservoir ?.Look forward to your reply thank you.
@@maggiehoult9382 hello, the lamp takes about 40ml of fuel, so like you say, just enough to saturate the felt. Free liquid in the fuel cell can cause issues as the vapour will ignite and put the flame out.
Thank you very much for your advice and speedy reply.
Thank you!!
Soo....what material do you use for a replacement washer?? One can't just put it back together without washers??

Hi I’m having trouble getting my filament wire to glow, I’m using a lithium battery 3.7v in a container similar to yours. Got this SL lamp and don’t know if it’s set up right with fibre washers. Any help will be good
If you have a circuit tester you can check to see if you have a circuit. Most probably the lighting plate will need stripping down and cleaning. My lamp uses kanthal wire for the filament, if your lamp has the original platinum wire I do not know the battery pack will make the platinum wire glow.
Hi Stevie finally got my SL lamp to light, the battery in the lighting device I was using was not strong enough. I used a 26650 battery and hey ho lit up. Happy days mate. Tony

Hi. I have my grandads type SL protector lamp. I’m struggling undoing the bottom. I’ve got the magnet lock open but just can’t unscrew it. Any recommends? Thanks very much
@@craigsinyorkshire try plenty of wd40 around the fuel cell where it meets the bottom of the middle section. Sometimes old polishing residue gums up the lamp. If this doesn't work I've put a rag around the lamp and put it in a vice, just be careful of the lock as these can easily be knocked off.
When I use both rings, top and bottom, the flame will extinguish after two seconds. I think because of lack of oxygen. What do I wrong?
@@laurensbeerendonk2832 this sounds strange! The too rings should not make the flame go out. When you light the lamp maybe the flame is too high? Try a low flame first and see if this helps.
I also removed the relighter plate and gave the underside a clean, maybe over the top.
Great video but can I ask..What fuel are you using?
For this lamp a spirit fuel is used. I use Upol Panel wipes but you can use Coleman's camping fuel or cigarette lighter fluid.
I,ve got a Eccles Protector lamp. There is a small handle in the middle part, you can set it on O(open) or S(shut). I tried both but to me it does not make any difference. Can you please explain the function? Thank you, greetings from Friesland!
@@laurensbeerendonk2832 Hello! The purpose of the open and shut setting is for when the miner is testing for methane gas in the mine. Underneath the silver bonnet just above the glass is a series of holes. When the middle part is set to open air can flow through these holes into the lamp and onto the flame. As methane gas is lighter than air the gas will collect in high places against the roof of the mine. If the miner wants to test for gas in the roof he will slide the middle part to shut. That will close the holes above the glass and make the mine air flow into the lamp from the larger holes near the top of the lamp bonnet. I hope this helps.
Hi will Primus Power Fuel be ok in my type 6 relighter? Thanks.
@@stealer59 to be honest I don't know. For a Type 6 you need a petroleum spirit fuel. This is so the flint spark can ignite the spirit to light the wick. The ideal fuel is one with a low flash point.
