Very interesting to see the modifications and developments on these lanterns. Thanks for taking the time to share this info.

What I am wondering Lamp Boy is how did you get into this hobby Sir ?? The video covers the lamp construction very well. I am just amazed at the thickness of the glass shield that surround the flame. Wondering if the glass itself is a special material used in the construction of the item itself for safety and shatterproof construction ??
Nicely made video Sir, job well done. 😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀

Hi, the glass is usually made from Pyrex, it’s a heat resistant glass, not sure if it has the same name in the USA but Pyrex glass is used in cooking a lot in jugs and dishes.
Many years ago I was a miner and had always been interested in the history of coal mining and that is how I got in to collecting miners lamps.

We have Pyrex on the other side of the pond. You jogged my memory cells with your story of working in the mines. I had a friend who was part owner of a mine that closed. I had the privilege of going inside the mine. I was just amazed at the number of things inside hundreds of feet underground. I took some tools from the machine shop. Shame I did not go down again as so many other did just that. Then the water pumps were turned off and in a few days the mine was flooded to within a number of reet from the opening. The stuff left down there was a crime to say the least. Nice to know we have things in common. Peace fella.. @@LampBoy3583

Have you ever rebuild the lamp locking situation when they get cut the latch so you don’t have to use and magnet to pull the pin down. I’ve wanted to rebuild and repair my lamps to get them to fully lock again. So I’m not sure I you have ever done it and could do and vid on it to show how it could be done thanks a lot !!

I’ve never repaired a latch before. I read somewhere that someone had used a brass pin out of a 3 pin plug and soldered it into place then filed it to size.

1:01 Good morning Lamp Boy I’ve just received a Type 6 Lamp following the death of my father in law who was a miner in South Derbyshire! The lamp needs some cleaning and tlc and would like to make it work again. I don’t have a magnet to unlock it. Can I use an ordinary (strong) magnet to do that or does it need a special electro magnet? Comparing it with your lamp it seems to be complete but I haven’t dismantled yet. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks Phil

@@CassottoReedsPC Hi Phil, a strong magnet should be fine. I have a rare earths magnet, N52 I think it is and it's 20 x 20mm and that should open the lamp. There's a few places that sell these including Protector and a website called Minerslamp.co.uk
First of all I would check to see if the lock cover has been cut, this was done on many lamps given to retired miners. To check if the lock cover has been cut just see if the lock cover will swing out with some pliers, don't be forceful tho.
