I love the little lady you found, Alex. When one of you said it looked like a chess piece, I wondered if you could use your random broken finds to create a unique chess set. Men’s heads for kings, women’s heads for queens, horse heads for knights, small bottle stoppers turned upside down for bishops, etc. Perhaps attach the heads onto various lengths of glass tubes or round bottles filled with small pieces of colored glass or rocks for weight, and attach the tubes onto tile bases. A set could be a premium item for your Etsy Shop.

Wonderful finds. The little lady you called a chest piece could also have been a a pilgrims thing or a gift for a baby which was named Elizabeth as the figurine looks like holy Elizabeth of Thüringen. She is shown as a lady with a basket. The storie is, she wanted to donate bread rolls to the poor but her family didn't allow it. So she took the clothes from her maid, went out of the castle and got catched by a family member. Been asked what's in the basket, she answered: Flowers and when the cloth was taken away there have been roses instead of bread rolls. So take a closer look to the basket to identify her😉

Blue Beads."In the east end too, it was customary for women and female children to wear blue glass beads around their neck as a 'preventative for bronchitis'". From "LONDON The Biography" by Peter Achroyd . pg211
This is from a chapter in the book talking about the plague years .
It would be interesting to know if the practice was common in other places than the Eastend of London .

    • @NorthernMudlarks
      @NorthernMudlarks  2 года назад +1

Thanks for that info! We just found something about it in an old book, so it was a common practice at least from the mid 19th century. Also common in places like Turkey xx

LOVE the wee chess piece lady (if that's what she is?!). Reminds me of the Lewis Chess Pieces! The grape shot is cool too - makes you wonder what was going on it that field..?!
I said to Sarah when you kept pulling out doll legs, but no arms that 'something was 'afoot' in this field that there were just legs and no arms... bad joke, but 'armless' really...' then you found one, but I'm still using this joke here! Haha!
Fantastic video and great editing, as always! Great to see our wee spot in your end of year round up too! Must get another collaboration arranged this year when suits you two!
Happy New Year from us all at DSoS HQ - Willie, Sarah and Jack. :) xxx

I feel like finding you ladies was a blessing for me. I absolutely love the both of you and all your adventures. Not only have you gotten me back to crafting, I have also ventured out of my comfort zone and have been trying new things. When Alex said she was having trouble looking for so many items. What I would do is focus on the mud and everything that isn't mud sticks out at me. I found doing that helps me a lot. Just a thought. Thank you for all the adventures.

This is so much fun to see. My mother now 81 used to do this when she was young on their own land, a tulip farm in Limmen (Holland) an old village dating back to Roman era. She found many Roman pot shards and very old pieces of pipes, very fine ones from the 1600 and other bits and pieces even a mammoth tooth. One day she came up to her room and found that her mother chucked everything away. She was heartbroken. This was in the 1950..Her mother said, I cleaned up your room, it was such a mess…😵‍💫 So nice to see mother and daughter mud larking together. ❣️

Hint: little bisque porcelain figure pieces can be easily and quickly reproduced with molds and efficiently fired in a home kiln. Can be personalized with low fired colored clay stains, easier to work with than the low fired glazes....will make excellent charms and jewelry candidates....👍 Thanks for the amazing adventurous videos!!!

If the glaze is really shiny it is modern. Old glazes are matt, normally lead which is green, or they are salt glaze kind of brown and tin glaze white / blue , I think , being a potter I should know, but have not done it in 25 years, If Roman normally burnished, this was done with a smooth stone to seal the clay when wet or leather hard, string or cord was used as decoration, pushed into wet clay, the posh stuff terra cotta with relief designs on the pot, clever Romans, their glass was super, us English were a bit more crude in design, but they worked as good wholesome cook wear-Love the clay pipes, as a smoker would love one,

That is so cool that you found out that a family member centuries ago was into that stuff. Into the pipes. That is just amazing. I actually have ancestors myself from the United kingdom. Anyone who might find a little lady with her basket would be thrilled. Beautiful find Alex. And, Gail, the little partial dog... whenever something like that is found I want to tuck him into a small basket with a tiny blanket to hide the missing parts. Give the little guy some comfort. Silly me, I've been researching Beatrix Potter. I almost pictured Beatrix searching the field with you without the squeamish live creature finds. Lucky you to have a family connection to the fairy pipes. My ancestors have moved halfway around the world, so who knows about them? I wonder where you found the book that had the fairy pipe article. The only books I've found that might have references to my ancestors are in different languages. Fascinating film this week! Thanks so much for your hard work, and it's a pleasure to see you enjoy it so much.😉

Loved that ceramic lady in a cape - nice find! Wow! 4 legs in one day! I always love the historical perspectives on your finds - the fairy pipe background was very interesting. Wishing the Northern Mudlarks a very happy New Year. Thank you for an excellent video.

I know this is a somewhat older video. I just wanted to say seeing you in your jammies by a fireplace Christmas tree in the background is absolutely wonderful!!! I hope you would consider doing a night before Christmas reading each year.

Amazing field you have there! I would definitely try to metal detect it, there should be dozens of coins and even more metallic relics to be found, especially if you're just finding them on the surface!

    Hello Beauties,
It's been an outstanding year for Mudlarking. Your calm spirits have soothed my troubled soul time after time. Thank you for sharing your talents, stories and ideas with us. May you be blessed in 2022 with all you wish and hope for. Happy New Year to the two ladies that got me started watching Mudlarking. Remember our friends the Johnsons, and many prayers for Caroline.
    Greetings from North Carolina U.S.A.

You two tickle me to no end. Ani absolutely love the jewels you create.
In North Carolina, USA, I was so focused on finding fossilsed shark teeth, I probably would have entirety missed a Spanish realm!

Wonderful way to start the New Year. So glad I found this channel last year, love the histories of some of those finds. The Old advertisements are a joy, as well. Love the superlatives in those ads. (One simply can't do without, the benefits of those fabulous products.) By the way I recently celebrated the 44th anniversary of my 21st birthday. (That means I can toss my fake ID into the trash receptical.) Have so enjoyed your finds, & the enthusiasm you both have. (I made a resolution that I won't be so verbose in my comments this year. But then I thought, why deprive readers of my wit & effervescent personality? That wouldn't be fair to the several people who may actually read them.)
Seriously Happy New Year to you both. May God bless you this year. May this be the second best Year ever for all.(the first being the Year I was born, of course.👌😉) Again Happy New Year from myself & my beloved grandchildren.
PS you should slice that white stone with the clear insides (trying to be accurate & scientific) & make pendants. Canada has a beautiful stone called Ocean Stone (I believe) it is so beautiful, they slice those stones & some make jewelry from it. It is stunning to be honest. (Learned of it from a Canadian gold miner I follow on YT. Dan Hurd (working from memory so I'm probably wrong). Many blessings to you & your entire family for this New Year. Thank you for your wonderful videos.

Try spraying your mud boots with rain-x auto window rain repellant....might possibly keep the mud from sticking so thick...👍

Happy New year to you too, ladies. You started off the New year with some lovely finds. How lucky are you, to have found a letter written by a family member, from so long ago. Speaking to us from the past, through his relative so far in the futcher. Bet he never thought that would ever happen, when he wrote his thoughts down and posted.
How anazing was that little figure. I wonder if she is Little Red Riding hood. When she wandered through the woods and collected blackberries for Granny? What a great find that was, who ever she's meant to be.
Good luck in all your mudlarking in 2022 ladies. I look forward to seeing what you find next. Xxx
