Thanks for the tips. Years ago I wanted to learn to make quilts and signed up for a class. I stayed frustrated so quit the class. I’m now giving it another go and hope to be less frustrated and more successful this time around. I’ll be getting me some starch and some of that invisigrip for my rulers. Thanks again!

I use a weight as well on my long ruler but my weight is a 5lb. Also you can buy the gripping dots for the rulers. The Grace Co has some "True Grips" that I have purchased on Amazon. I love your homemade starch spray because I use a lot of it & so easy to make. However on light colored material you have to be careful not to scorch the spray as it will leave marks.

Hi Kim. I put a 3lb weight on the top of the ruler when i have to cut a long piece. It seems to keep the ruler from sliding

Hi Susan: That's a great idea! I hadn't thought of that, although I know that sewists often use pattern weights to keep the pattern pieces done, so sort of the same idea - but not exactly. I'll have to try that. Thanks for the tip.

Do you wash your material before using it. Thanks for the video.

I don't usually wash my fabric before use, but if I think that there might be a possibility of it bleeding, I do. For example, dark batiks (red, especially) and hand dyes might need to be washed before you use them. In any case, if you wash one of the fabrics in your project, you should wash all of the fabrics in that project so they will be pre-shrunk before you use them.
