Ive been a roofer 33 years. I always preach quality over speed. Not only does speed sacrifice quality but if you want to be a roofer for years to come, pace yourself men. Im 56 and still getting it done on the roof. My reputation has carried me to the point that i dont even advertise to the general public. I moved into roofing only for realtors. They know what they want and are willing to pay top dollar for quality work. I have videos on yt showing the same issues on roofs i come across. We all have to start out roofing somewhere, but if you dont know what you are doing dont start out contracting roofs, start at the bottom and learn from the old timers. I spent 2 years bucking shingles up a ladder b4 i ever laid my first shingle( which i put on upside down ). I had a patient boss and learned from one of the best. Do quality work men!
Thanks same here! I started Roofing 17 years ago for one of the best roofing companies in town. I learned quality, brand, and reputation are key. Just started this company three years ago. Started with nothing and took three years to get where I am. It was a long road to build up the good reviews. I haven't paid anything on advertising outside of shirts business cards and yard signs. Word of mouth and Google reviews have been my bread and butter. I try not to focus on being the best price. If you focus on that you can only go so low. Building the brand to the point that customers are willing to pay for it, because they know I'll be around if there is ever a problem and more importantly will take care of it! Then you don't need to focus on quantity. Thanks for sharing your story.
Just trying to build a brand like I would want from a company providing a service to me. That kind of reputation should feed my family for the rest of my life and my kids lives.
I roofed 2 garages and 2 sheds. This uh, looks absolutely terrible. I can sit there and think of tons of problems with what might happen to that roof/house given time
I AM a contractor. First roof I worked on was our house with my Dad,,, Last roof finish just 2 weeks ago. more than 60 years between those two. Excellent video,, excellent eye to detail, spot on as to your appraisal of the last scammer who did that roof.
I shut down my roofing company due to the insurance. Couldn’t compete against lousy roofers with no insurance. This guy stresses checking out the contractor before hiring one. Absolutely. As long as what you say against another contractor is true, it’s not defamation. I have testified in court on behalf of the State License Board in CA against lousy roofers, most of whom are simply not qualified to install anything, or too stupid to know better.
We do have a lot of scammers here in Florida. When I deal with ANY company, I ask them for three things. Their license number, proof of insurance, and, if they want any money upfront, evidence that they are bonded. Amazing how many of them just leave, fast. Any respectable company will be glad to show you those three items.
I owned a roofing company for 8 years and i would not put my name on that job unless i started completely over on it.. all it takes is to miss one or two raised nails for a potential leak.
You cannot just fix stuff like that. Once you touch it, you own it. Sounds harsh to say gotta replace it, but you are right. Saving both you and the customer from nightmares down the road. I said it b4. If you paint a turd, its still a turd.
@@rockopaniagua2253 you can teach a monkey to lay shingle. What other profession out there is still half drunk from the night before and currently stoned while working? Your lucky if there’s only one guy on your crew that’s high on crack or meth 😂🤦🏼♂️
It's common stuff at my place even with certified legit contractors. Everytime our government wanted to stimulate the economy, they gave taxes credit to home owners to hire construction professionals but construction workers abused people and got lot of money.
@@Monst3r614 yeah, I don't think anyone ever checked on my crew's work after we were done. I like to think they trusted us to do good work. We had a thing, though, that anyone on the crew could point out a potential error or flaw and even if I was calling out the lead guy, there would be no retaliation. I told the boss a few times that he was wrong.
as a contractor for the last 35 years , it is amazing how many times i have had a client that had been scammed and then didn't have the money to fix the mess , there should be a law that when a scammer is found guilty in court , every thing they own should be awarded to the home owner and that way they can't just move on down the street to the next sucker
Dont fellcsorry for the homeowner unless you know more details. The homeowner eent with a cheap roofer trying to get by with not paying his deductible or got low bids trying to actually make money off of his insurance claim. Guys, onsurance companies didnt get rich over paying for claims. If they say it costs 12k to correctly replace your roof it actually probably cist 14k. Dont expect to hire someone for 9k and get a quality job done. Greed kills.
@@OneOut1 or you are simply not able to find a proper installer. It is hard to vet people up front. Or in my case I could not find an electrician at all but luckily gave a degree in electronics.
@Humpydwarf8 I won't argue that point, spent time in the field cleaning up garbage engineering myself, but project managers think they can have all three most of the time and so garbage in garbage out to the field.
Tip from a pro roofer. A fancy truck and well dressed salesman doesn't mean the crew has any idea what they are doing. The best roofs I've seen were from young "poor" crews that did their research and had a good reason to do a good job. Insurance and an llc to hide behind can make people sloppy.
As a 2o+ year roofer who only cares about quality not speed. We need to weed these jerks out of the industry. It hurts the industry as a whole that they can get away with this.
as a roofer, that first glimpse as you climbed up and showed us that valley... it physically hurt me to look at that. I'd have been FIRED if I'd done one SECTION like that, but the entire valley!? Then looking at the rest of the roof... I ran out of curse words to call the "roofers" that did this
I'm a carpenter, I used to do my own roofs but found it was nice to just get a qualified roofer to do it. As you say, check the company out first and go from there. I will not touch shingles anymore, standing seam steel all the way. Why do a roof twice. Good work though man, call em out 👊🇨🇦🇱🇷
I am also a carpenter and have been roofing out new construction for the bosses who happen to be my dad and cousin and uncle who don’t want to roof anymore and it’s a great gig for a younger feller and a great thing for the older guys who don’t want to ever roof again
In Russian there's a saying, something like "cheapskates pay twice" I'm an HVAC contractor and I've lost a number of jobs because of quoting higher, but my reputation stands Hello from Toronto
Hi.thats is a crime scene.iv been doing roof since I was 12 with my dad in Ireland.slate roofs then tile roofs.been here since 85.i was shocked with the shingles I saw using 4 per shingle.learned from a hard ass roofer who showed me the right way and more importantly why it was installed that way.that roofer should be shamed in the local paper.makes real roofers look bad all around.keep up the great work grand roofing.stay safe.
Exactly, fastest roofer is always the most expensive because they don’t follow instructions and of coarse they finish and get there money and never even finished job , keep the bad workmanship videos coming , I use them to educate my clients when they tell me they have someone cheaper in price and they can jump on it right away ,,lol just means more reroofs and lots of repairs for us to cleanup
I've actually seen some REALLY fast roofers that still do good work. They're fast because of efficiency of motion. I bet they're faster than the hacks that derped around with THIS roof. Packages get opened a certain way so they don't have to flip and flop shingles around, they distribute them along a pattern so they're not tripping over shingles, or running out of them, they're not wasting trips up and down the ladder, not wasting time fixing things that they could have done right the first time - they plan their work, and work their plan.
I don’t understand why insurance companies, when they send your home insurance renewal policy to you they don’t put an insert in the envelope saying that if you hire a contractor to do work on your house and they are not insured, and something goes wrong your insurance won’t cover you. It’s so simple. Then homeowners would be asking for a copy of license and insurance. Also if a cash guy with no insurance is working on your property and gets hurt he sues you. People just get blinded by the cheap price.
First of all, you may want to reconsider asking insurance companies to do anything. Sometimes they are part of the problem. They also look for the lowest bids to do repairs. My EX-insurance company sent a inspector out to inspect my roof without my knowledge or consent. I installed my own roof twenty two years ago. No problems or leaks. ( I use to be a roofer many years ago) I was anticipating replacing the roof within the next 5 years just due to the age of the shingles. However, the insurance inspector wrote in the report that the roof was in catastrophic condition and needed replacement immediately or they would cancel my insurance policy. The inspector wrote in the report that the shingles were curling and the top shingle caps were coming off. I also had two nail pops that pushed two shingles up. I went up on my roof and nailed the two nail pops back down and applied a small amount of roofing cement to make it look it was repaired. I also had to explain that I had a COBRA roof vent system that made the edge of shingles look like they were sticking up. (The inspector didn't know what the Cobra venting system was). The insurance company actually cancelled my policy and eventually reinstated it after I took photos of the roof cement that I deliberately smeared on the shingle to make it look like something was done. I then replaced my insurance company. Anyway. the roof lasted three more years before I replaced it. There was no curling as the inspector reported. There was minimum granular loss and I believe that the shingles would have lasted another five years. Think about it, if the insurance companies can get you to replace your roof before the life expectancy. They will never have a loss. ( To this day I have never made a homeowners claim ) However, I see that many insurance companies are paying out large sums of money for wind and hail damage to roofs that have already passed the life expectancy of the shingle. I also want to tell you that when my policy was time to renew. I simply replaced it with a different insurance company. The old insurance company reported me to the credit bureau to have me pay for the next years policy because I didn't cancel my old policy after they dropped me two months before. The credit bureau sided with me and said the insurance company had no basis to ask me because I had another insurance policy in place before the old policy expired. Keep thinking that the insurance companies will do the right thing.
I went with someone I knew was a reputable company. Well reviewed, very professional. Responded quickly yo all my questions and concerns. They were quick, two days for a complete tear off and new roof. The crew was so efficient, the job site was like a well-oiled machine. Clean up was immaculate after the tear off. To date, I only ever found one nail, and that was in a very out of the way place. I never go with the low-ball estimate. Sometimes you really do pay for quality work.
You can also pay to be defrauded--and then pay and pay and pay again and again to repair the damage that the "most trusted" expensive (but fraudulent) roofers cause to your house.
This right here is why my bids are usually more than the other guy. And I’m always replacing these kinda roofs. I do a 10 in stager and keep my nails back 8 inches from laps been roofing for 12 years now and not ever have I had a call back.
Right when he gets to the top of the ladder and I seen the two shiners in the key way, I knew I didn’t need to watch the rest, but I couldn’t stop looking at that train wreck.
Not surprised, this happens everyday. Reminds me of an elderly lady that couldn't believe my price being high. Than she went with the cheapest chuck in a truck. Did a little research and those guys never pulled a permit. Probably weren't even licensed and insured. The lady got what she paid for. I mean what her insurance paid for. Good luck with insuring your house after that.
Great informative video even for a contractor of over 20 years. Good call on not putting your name on a roof of this size, pitch and unfinished problems. Rarely do I bump into jobs like these but they are out there and can cost dearly to homeowners who have no clue. The roof is the only protection a family has to protect themselves from everything else out there. I believe homeowners insurance could or may cover losses like this with a contractor negligence claim. There may be a subjugated claim against the prior contractor if they can prove the loss and reason for a full replacement. Hopefully they will find a way for coverage if not this is a big lesson learned and total loss.
WOW! I have seen many roofs like this and also many new flat roofs done extremely poorly over 30 plus years. Quality is something our industry desperately needs to focus attention on. The use of cheap untrained sub contractors is rampant in our industry. Roofs like this are the reason roofing continues to lead the way in litigation cases. Clients need to understand, the penny you save today will be part of the quarter you spend tomorrow.
As a contractor it really frustrates me to see this type of hacked in work. Just be a reputable business and practice good work and proper ethics. If not then it is obviously not for you.
I can’t believe how this is even possible. Leaves me speechless, with about 3 months of practice and learning this kind of quality is impossible. Unbelievable that “contractor” has a business
Of course he has a business. There’s ALWAYS some sucker looking for the cheapest option, which hurts both the homeowner AND real contractors who do things the correct way
It's one thing to have the odd nail raised, but steady streams of them, no tar, reusing old flashing, and then leaving supplies on top of the roof and not properly finishing the edges just shows how lack of a fuck they gave. Worried about getting paid and not their reputation or the quality of life the family would have in that home. A properly installed roof can last 20-30+ years, but not getting 1 out of a fresh install is crazy.
I would bet that the roofer that did this shoddy work is the type of guy that comments on everybody else's youtube video letting them know the "correct" way to do it lol
Homeowner here 16 years and I'm scheduled to have a roofing contractor come out in May from 30 year asphalt to 50 year. I already asked to see his insurance document and see this contractor has the coverage needed. He answered my call with Home Advisor & was 3rd contractor I had out for estimate. I feel safe there. I also asked for addresses he's done near me. All is good. Very good suggestions you've made. Boy, there are a million ways to become bankrupt as a homeowner! Never assume you are rich just because you're a homeowner. And as you say, we all need to research those "experts" we allow in our precious homes!! Thank you!
I agree with you 1000% Customers never Vet their Contractors or their Insurance. Where I am it is criminal to operate without a license. It is up to the homeowner to do their research for sure. This contractor who installed this horrible roof should be in jail. Geez! Now the Owner is stuck and likely has no $ to pay you to do the job.
Defamation is the legal term bud. You do really good work. I've been roofing over a decade. Just started my own business. If you're gonna do it then do it right. These home owners put a lot of money into their home and they deserve quality service
I’m small potatoes, but all the big established “reputable” companies I have to compete with have this level of craftsmanship. They do finish the job of course, but the quality looks the same. They all eat deductibles, they all use subs to install, their sales reps get a one week roofing class at best and go out lying to consumers. This day in age, the way the roofing industry is, I say your SOL as an ordinary consumer to find a good roofer. All I can suggest is the same as you, vet your contractor. Be open to a local small company you’re not familiar with and check them out, they might have a business model like mine that’s about quality over being the lowest bid. And expect to pay your deductible! ProBuilt Construction “Where quality counts” Caldwell, TX
If your a smaller company you should easily be able to beat out the big "reputable" companies they have much higher overhead expenses. If the giant guys are beating you out then you are charging to much. I own a small roofing company as well
I have an old rental. The roof is ugly. I bang down the nails and use Henry's . I've owned the rental for 14 years now .believe it or not ,no water leaks. But I do have to go up on the roof once a year to work on it. That's the price i pay. Good video from Sacramento
We call those types of Roofers fly by night er's! there one day gone the next I would definitely not put my name on that roof... You are 100 percent correct, remove and replace. Great job on the video A picture is worth a thousand words and in this case the video is on point. Great inspection!
Good video. I was a roofer for many years. I learned from my Dad who was a good old time roofer. I never recalled him returning to repair a roof that he installed. ( Not saying he never did. I just never remembering him having to return to a job. ) His philosophy was properly laying out the roof first. He would chalk his lines first. figure out if he needed to start off with a shorter shingle pattern so that when he got to the other end of the roof, he didn't have a short shingle to end with. He took his time. You also need to understand how to properly flash your roof. This was his specialty However it is easy to see how screwed up some so called contractors are. They don't lay out the roof first. They don't know how to properly flash. they don't pay attention to details. I think in this case the contractor was either a salesman with a home improvement license or ether didn't know how to install it and hired inexperience people for cheap labor.
Nothing beats the one I was called out to fix this summer was 2 weeks old, had 7 leaks nothing was lined up almost every nail line exposed old vents and boots put back on even with gapping holes yet charged for new vents and boots hell even the ice guard didnt have the plastic taken off bad to pull off the whole roof and it was 2 weeks old...ended up only charging the lady for material and had to redo the whole thing
What an absolute hack job! The bitterness of POOR QUALITY lingers long after the sweetness of CHEAP PRICE is forgotten! I love to share the above with potential clients of mine
This seems to always happen when homeowners try to avoid paying their deductible and hire some random crew to install their roof at a discount. For the last year our crews only hand nail. No more nail guns.
I’m a painting contractor and I love seeing these videos I’ll quote jobs and lose a lot of them because people don’t want to pay for quality work/product they hire the guy that does the job for almost cost of materials and does an even worse job then calls me and and I’ll have to come finish or fix when they could said money by just hiring the right guy in first place I appreciate you know your craft and want to do a good job👍
It happens all the time. Sadly some people are in business just to undercut and make a quick buck, not a long term mentality and care for reputation and growing a business with quality work and integrity
I have reroofed 2 full jobs of my own both 2008 ...I have striped off the old shingles...Ice and Water Damned the first 2 layers then put up tarp the rest and then reshingled...on my own.... and a girl...but what gets me the most in this video is the Capping or I don't know what you call it in the US the Top bridge when 2 sections connect ... WOW WOW WOW...Keep up the great work.
As a kid I tackled heights specifically to get over my fear of heights. It sort of worked.....many decades ago. Now in watching this guy gallop around the roof as if he is only 3 ft off the ground I am left with deep trauma that would normally take another lifetime to get over. Fortunately, my memory is poor now too, so with any luck I will forget what I saw here in a few days.
When I turned 50 I was discussing with friends that I thought my days getting on a roof were numbered. In fact I explicitly numbered age 55 as the last time I would. And I stuck to it. I don’t know exactly what happens but every trip up onto a roof in those last few years was twice as unsteady as the last. I’m giving up all ladders for my 65th, if I get that far.
I'm guessing, best damn roofer "big time". His crew smokes weed does coke drink beer all day while they're roofing. I think those types guy that would do things like that.
@@craftman5632 I've stopped roofing for another career many years ago. But it is very hard to find people in the Construction industry who work 5 days a week and don't get high or drink while on the job. I have many friends who are still in the industry. The number one complaint from them is trying to find good employees.

... So, because I'm looking into building my own (small) home on my own (small) piece of property, I've been looking this stuff up for research. I'm not a roofer. I'll never claim to be one. I've 'installed' exactly two very small, extremely uncomplicated rooves in my life, both when I was a kid on the farm. No fancy corners, not even any peak to the roof, shallow pitch, all 'shed style'. My dad laid the first course to show me how and I took over. This was some thirty-odd years ago. Even I, when you pointed the camera at that roof, said "Ho-lee-- that's jacked up!"
There's one video after another on youtube of "experts" telling you not to be a do it yourselfer and to hire a professional. This is a perfect example of a job done by a "professional".
I agree with you 100% about finishing that BS job and attaching your name to it. I learned not to finish a poor job, because once you work on it, YOU own it.

I can already tell you this is the homeowner who didn’t want to pay a professional. As a tile contractor myself, I always laugh when a homeowner tells me I’m too much when Im in the middle with my pricing. Everyone wants something for nothing lol. And these are the results
I'm not a roofer. Have only helped with a garage roof repair and then I built a 12 x 16 shed which I roofed myself. I spent weeks learning the ways to properly install shingles and to protect the integrity of the roof and after 6 years, the roof looks the same as it did the day I finished it. Yeah, it's a small space but it was just me with a hammer and a blade. I can't imagine paying someone to do a job like this
I used to work as a roofer in EU and my boss and the rest of the team did everything by the book and those roof's still stand there, If I or anyone else did even just 2 of those wrong we would have been demoted or fired. Did you end up working with the owner and remake the roof? Would like to see a series of you coming in, telling what is wrong, then making a good roof and having flashbacks to the episode of how it should be and how it was previously from A to Z on one house.
Yep. Ask for a certificate of insurance. If they're reputable, they are used to being asked for them. I spend 7 1/2 hours a day issuing certificates of insurance for Contractors. It's important. Ask to be added as an Additional Insured on the certificate.
My dad and I were GC's when he was still alive and his favorite thing to tell me was "If you have to do it twice you did it the first time for free." While I know from experience there is more to it then that, it's still a true principle for contractors to follow. That and the chances of repeat business is close to 0%. I learned quickly to ask him questions because when I screwed up, and what teenager doesn't, it came out of my pay. A few times I owed dad money, but I learned several lessons that I still follow to this day. The original "roofing" guy was not a tradesman, he was a RUclips trained scammer. Roofing is one of those few things you can't pay me enough to do anymore. It takes talent and a lot of skill to do a proper job like this one. He had nether.
Simply deplorable, I would document your findings very well, backed by video as it seems your doing. Explain it in detail, give him a copy of video and suggest he have an attorney send a demand letter to the shitty contractor for a full refund or suit will be brought. This way you are not exposing yourself by publicly outing the contractor but homeowner is armed with evidence needed to try to get his money back. Hopefully that contractor wont be in business much longer. They should be sued and perhaps even charged criminally.
This is why ive always told my workers i want quality over quantity. I always do good work enough that someone like this dude can go up and i can just chill and not worry .
Thank God I work for a reputable company from roofing to foundation. We do a lot of stuff. But I'm one of the main roofers. We don't take big jobs like this. Because it's just a couple of us. But the small jobs I do. look absolutely like gold compared to this.
Your videos make me nervous lol. I'm scared of heights, so watching you mince around the edge of a roof like it's nothing is like AAAAAGGHHH!!! Great video tho.
No diverters, Metal work is a nonexistent joke, no saddle on the chimney, tie-ins were whack with the exposed nail lines & no single course weave, under driven nails, no cap, chimney falling apart, no starter, absolute trash. Scrape it off that roofs no good
So true on hiring the cheap guy over the quality guy…my pops had a few instances where he was so busy he had to schedule a customer out a few weeks so they ended up hiring the cheaper guy…one job was ceramic tile down a long corridor that had a big fancy window at the end of it…dad said it was so badly done that he was embarrassed by his reaction to seeing it lol…the lines for the tile weren’t even close to being straight and the tile corners were not flush with each other…so he ended up having to rip it all ur and start over…the customer never complained about dad being too busy and scheduled too far outta again lol…and my pops has never had to advertise ever…and we live in a small town in the middle of nowhere and there’s that much work still…another job was given to another company in town because dad had hurt his back and had surgery unexpectedly …the cost the other company charged the customer just for the rip out of a bathroom…no install done yet…was several $1000 more then what my dad had bud for the entire job! $17,000 to rip out the old stuff in an average sized bathroom with an average tub and toilet lol…the customer called my dad and asked if he would stop by to check out the other companies work and talk to him for a minute…lol…dad said he knew something was wrong at that request lol…the company did ok wotk but for $17,000!!? But the guy who owns the other company was a silver spoon kid and hasn’t ever been in the real world so….that helps too…
Home owners want it done in a day and quality at the same time. Not sticking up for those roofers though that's a re do for sure. They didn't even finish the ridge lol. Unbelievable how someone can be so shoddy.
I jumped ahead to about 08:40 and was immediately greeted with horror. I'm no good at any of this kind of work and i can tell this was a total bodge job.
The roof of my place needed to be replaced so got some prices. The price for a whole new roof using shingles was around $7500 dollars. Then asked about putting a metal roof on the place and the price was $14,000. Just bit the bullet and went with the metal roof cause it comes with a 50 year warranty. Should not have to worry about replacing the roof anymore unless a really bad storm damages it. I can say house is cooler now on those hot summer days.
Terrible. I just had my roof done.... went with someone whos roofs I've seen around and I knew were good. Definitely not the cheapest. Around here a lot depends on the quality of the sub crew who actually does the work... the hispanic guys. I got a fantastic crew who had attention to detail and were damn good at what they do.
I wouldn’t ever be that person that calls out another contractor. You don’t want to be that guy... your work speaks for itself and the homeowner will get the word out about the other roofer. Great video!
I know I appreciate the comment. Just trying to bring awareness to it, it's not my job to call the contractor out, and I don't want to get sued for defamation. Just trying to bring awareness to it, even if I did call them out it wouldn't help in my local market cuz people here don't watch. Thanks again!
the owner should sue for a judgement and then even if he can't collect the public record will be there for all the world to see. it's not defamation if the guy has a judgement and a sanction from the state licensing board. hacks and crooks should be called on their BS... and often
I worked as a sider for a couple seasons and oh boy we had some bad contractors on site. It's just unfortunate because it makes the rest of us look bad, even if we had nothing to do with the job.
I realize this is a few years old but to answer your question, if you publish their name they could sue for defamation. For someone to win a defamation case they have to prove you knowingly spread lies about them as a fact, among other things. Good defenses to defamation are truth and opinion. In this specific video you show and discuss the evidence and provide professional opinions, in many states if they tried to sue for defamation over this video you'd probably win and get your attorney fees covered. As a rental property owner, the homeowner should go after the contractor hard. The first stop (insurance or not) would be small claims court with this video as exhibit A. After winning I would place liens on the businesses assets (to prevent them from selling everything off), get a writ of garnishment (go after their bank accounts) and finally a writ of execution (sell their assets).
As a roofer I cringe walking into a project another roofer has been at. No matter how good you are a homeowner has a healthy skepticism and you can never make them fully happy.
Not only does it have all the water tight issues you mentioned, it looks like shit from the ground, I'm no roofer but the way it overlaps and the 'pattern' looks god awful like that, that can't be how the manufacturer designed it to look, it looks like the installer tried to get an extra inch or two out of every course
Worked for a general contractor for the last 4 years of my working life. This is beyond bad. No way that we would ever consider doing this poor of a job. I feel sorry for the owner. This is beyond "fixing".
I’m starting to wonder how many guys I know around me actually have active insurance I live in Montana and the requirements needed to roof/frame are bare minimum. And it shows in every single tear off that I do.
We just finished a job similar to this. Easetrough all banged up across the entire roof, left lots of material on the roof, didn’t do any returns or shelves, every single shingle had the nails 3-5 inches above nail line, they actually had shingles going vertically in the middle of the roof. Felt awful for the homeowner
This is why license is important. I don't recall anywhere it was said if there was one, but probably not. Analysis is correct the whole thing needs to come off to the bare wood and restart over.
im not a roofer, but i can tell a jacked up roof when i see one... how would you go about fixing something like this, that really has no clear start or end?
How is it guaranteed to fail after 15 years, I have replaced several roofs that outlived the warranty. The last one by 12 years, so it lasted 27 years and it was still not leaking . But I am not gonna lie it was worn out, ugly, faded , all the colors were different because of the age and the sun.

Tip from a pro roofer. A fancy truck and well dressed salesman doesn't mean the crew has any idea what they are doing. The best roofs I've seen were from young "poor" crews that did their research and had a good reason to do a good job. Insurance and an llc to hide behind can make people sloppy.

Im fast at shingling but im not a hack
I've actually seen some REALLY fast roofers that still do good work. They're fast because of efficiency of motion. I bet they're faster than the hacks that derped around with THIS roof. Packages get opened a certain way so they don't have to flip and flop shingles around, they distribute them along a pattern so they're not tripping over shingles, or running out of them, they're not wasting trips up and down the ladder, not wasting time fixing things that they could have done right the first time - they plan their work, and work their plan.
@@kencolley2413 sounds like something a slow roofer would say..
I’ve only shingled my shed, but even I can see the shoddy workmanship on that roof.
It's hard to sell someone a roof for 15k that paid 15k for the house
Cheap is expensive
it depends. i've paid top dollar and gotten shit work before. it depends a lot upon the people doing the job caring about their work.
I can’t believe how this is even possible. Leaves me speechless, with about 3 months of practice and learning this kind of quality is impossible. Unbelievable that “contractor” has a business
Of course he has a business. There’s ALWAYS some sucker looking for the cheapest option, which hurts both the homeowner AND real contractors who do things the correct way
In most states you do not require any other licensing to be a roofer other than pay for a generic "business license"
The way he says “coulda smeared shit on it better than that” towards the end lmao
He was slowly just becoming more and more frustrated
It's one thing to have the odd nail raised, but steady streams of them, no tar, reusing old flashing, and then leaving supplies on top of the roof and not properly finishing the edges just shows how lack of a fuck they gave. Worried about getting paid and not their reputation or the quality of life the family would have in that home. A properly installed roof can last 20-30+ years, but not getting 1 out of a fresh install is crazy.
I would bet that the roofer that did this shoddy work is the type of guy that comments on everybody else's youtube video letting them know the "correct" way to do it lol

The problem is, price is not an adequate or accurate means of predetermining quality of install someone may just under
I jumped ahead to about 08:40 and was immediately greeted with horror.
Plus maintenance is easier for a qualified roofer!
Thanks again!
the owner should sue for a judgement and then even if he can't collect the public record will be there for all the world to see. it's not defamation if the guy has a judgement and a sanction from the state licensing board. hacks and crooks should be called on their BS... and often
It amazes me how comfortable you are walking on that roof.
Low pitch roof.
Thank you I appreciate you taken the time to leave this comment, it is very informative!
@@GrandRoofingInc is the homeowner going to go after the lousy contractor and get their money back?
As a roofer I cringe walking into a project another roofer has been at. No matter how good you are a homeowner has a healthy skepticism and you can never make them fully happy.
It’s looks like they went to the Ray Charles school of roofing..
I'm a professional roofer with 35 years experience...I thought the roof looked fine.
Drinks all around.
You've called off every payday for the past 35 years mate, is something going on?
@@paudeline Shingles.... I have Shingles... (get it?)
Worked for a general contractor for the last 4 years of my working life. This is beyond bad. No way that we would ever consider doing this poor of a job. I feel sorry for the owner. This is beyond "fixing".
Been installing almost 10 years and it kill me people do this crap to homeowners
I’m starting to wonder how many guys I know around me actually have active insurance
I live in Montana and the requirements needed to roof/frame are bare minimum. And it shows in every single tear off that I do.
What reputation lol. The guy was a hack.
Wow! It sucks to see happening.
Damn that’s a mess.. I thought those looked like IKO shingles 😁 some people shouldn’t be allowed to own tools
This is why license is important. I don't recall anywhere it was said if there was one, but probably not. Analysis is correct the whole thing needs to come off to the bare wood and restart over.
Your a braver man than me just to walk around on top of that disaster
im not a roofer, but i can tell a jacked up roof when i see one... how would you go about fixing something like this, that really has no clear start or end?
Even with a perfect install it's still iko... guaranteed to fail after 15 years.
You’re being too generous with 15 years lol
@@jaked964ya your right..
How is it guaranteed to fail after 15 years, I have replaced several roofs that outlived the warranty. The last one by 12 years, so it lasted 27 years and it was still not leaking . But I am not gonna lie it was worn out, ugly, faded , all the colors were different because of the age and the sun.
100% correct.
That's why you buy something from Erie... Shit lasts forever dude.
