  • AND YOU WONDER WHY I HAVE A CHANNEL ABOUT ROOFING!!! This homeowner asked me to take a look at the poorly installed roof/soffit/fascia/ and gutters after they decided to go with a lower bid. What I found changed me. I'm not sure if I will ever be the same after seeing this. This is pure heart break to me. I cannot believe that people out there treat homeowners this way. He could've looked at the packaging or watched any video on RUclips. The leaders of my hater herd would do a better job than this guy. .

I’ve been doing fences by myself for 7 years now in Florida and Georgia. I’ve always been a perfectionist when it comes to my fences. I just recently moved to Pennsylvania and got hired by a fence company and they made me feel the same way you do looking at this roof. They don’t use a string to set posts, no string to see the flow of the top rail. On wood fences they do 6 inches over the top rail leaving a huge gap at the bottom. Their rips are terrible and sometimes too small. My boss calls it the wow factor. To us it looks like shit but the customers most of the time don’t know the difference and think the fence looks great.

I was out in business for myself till I got sick of the extra work, a good tradesman should know how to price a job, and I would be cheaper than a lot of people who would throw a figure at it, and their quality was far less... your only going to get a good trade by word of mouth from credible customers, the kind that know what they were expecting...I used to spend hours talking to clients finding out that they had no idea what they were getting and what the pros and cons were to it. Being a professional and being a tradesman are very different nowadays...

I'm a contractor here in Tulsa and I'm going to play Devil's Advocate here. It's quite possible the customer was being SO cheap that the roofer who did this job had to cut so many corners to make a profit. You said it yourself that they went with a cheaper bid. Now personally, I never try to bid the job lower than everyone else, because I like to be able to take my time and do a good job. Also, people who only want the lowest price are nearly impossible to work for to begin with.

It's hard to know what the right price for quality is. I got a bunch of estimates for a 24 square roof with architectural & 2 layer tear off. 2 @ $11K, 1 @ 15K, 3 @ $20K & one amazing one. The amazing one was $28K + gutters plus $8K for redeck. I don't know squat about roofing but I know if you go a step up board version over OSB, that don't cost no 8 grand. Running the numbers on Menards pricing, I don't think the materials would've exceeded 3-4K. Insurance & labor I get. $36-38K (a third of my house value in the Midwest) is crazy. I can have guys working for weeks building an addition for that. Not 4 days to do a roof. Meanwhile I watch The Build Show do Matt's roof with metal for what he claims a per square install price similar to what I paid for mine on the lower end estimate for asphalt. I did get insurance paperwork & checked licensing.

Do your research and ask questions there’s usually a reason that someone is cheaper then everyone else. A good tradesmen knows their work is good, what it’s worth and values their time accordingly. Good inspector on this video. I am also a roof inspector in Tucson Az and we occasionally come across the same things on roofs here.
Most homeowners will leave the roof work to the licensed professionals. Then there are those homeowners that will attempt to perform a repair, sometimes using that "roofer in a can" that we've all seen on t.v. commercials where the guy will head out onto shark infested waters on a repaired boat. That stuff is just a gimmick that I have never seen work on roofs.
Then there are the homeowners that dont do their homework & hire just anyone that says, "I can do the work." Not realizing they've been taken by someone who is in it for a quick buck, has no pride, no attention to detail, full of incompetence, and real soon, more often than not, will not answer your phone calls.
The homeowners in your video learned an expensive lesson. I highly doubt they will ever collect a penny from the unlicensed installer who did the work.
With a licensed and bonded company you can look up reviews on multiple media platforms. You can check them out with the registrar of contractors.
Get a bid that explains all the work that is to be performed and if you have any further questions do follow up by contacting the roof inspector that provided your estimate, company supervisor, or the owner for further clarity.
Get more than 1 bid, I recommend 3-4. The more the merrier.
Most roof inspections are free, (see below for comments on re-inspection fees where a company is called to look over work after it has been performed by others).
Let all the roof inspectors that come out to look at your roof that you are having more inspections being performed by other roofing contractors. This alone helps against price gouging and pushes the various estimators to be honest.
Ask for pictures of what they see on the roof, making sure that these images are from your roof and not from some other roof.
If you're thinking, "Damn, this guy has trust issues," yeah, you bet I do, because I've seen both ends of the spectrum!
It's your hard earned dollars I don't want to see you loose by making what you thought was an educated decision. It does happen with some unlicensed and even with a few licensed characters.
The licensed ones you can take to court and they can be shut down if need be.
Do your homework. Roof repairs and re-roofing is not cheap. Make sure you put your roof in competent hands.
Your home is your castle and your expensive investment, leave the roof work to the pros. If you need to have the roof re-inspected by another competent roofing contractor after expensive work has been performed, a fee more than likely will be charged for a roof re-inspection where others have performed work anywhere from $50 to $200 typically. Prices can vary in your area, you may be surprised what may be found if you want peace of mind.

But in the few instances that I actually did something on my own, I opted for going to the extreme to make sure it stays on.
I got a call from someone where I build a garden shed a few years ago, they wanted to put solar panels on it, and they guy from the panels couldn't get the shingles off.
Obviously he couldnt, after I asked if they ever wanted to put solar panels on, and they said "no", I glued them on with XTac before I nailed them into place.

In Florida you can be heavily fined as a residential owner for using a non-licensed roofing contractor. If your state starts fining homeowners for the use of non-licensed contractors I assure you they will dry up and blow away to another state. How the heck do they even pull a permit???

I did metal standing seam for 3 years. I just did my own shingle roof and it was easy. I was looking up ridge vent shingles and found this. What a nightmare!

They need to file a complaint with their BBB or similar against this guy and his company and workers.
Possibly take them to court to recoup their money for a job not completed properly.

I get that money's tight, but all to save $500 on such an investment, by going with the local 'handyman'? This is a harsh lesson.

I'm a local "handyman", I don't large jobs but even I know the basics of roofing, done a few of my own, will be doing my farmhouse this summer.
This was a scammer, guy probably isn't even in town any longer.

@@msack6904I put handyman in quotes for that reason. Of course not all are like this. I'm basically saying, she barely knew this person, had no reference of his work apparently, and didn't check to see if he was insured, considering she didn't know his track record. I've worked with many handymen who i'd trust to do this job. But never anyone I barely know, especially to save only $500 on such an expensive job.

@[The] White Rabbit What's race have anything to do with this? I've worked with Mexican people who would do an amazing job and take pride. I've also worked with lazy ones. Same deal with any other race. Are you trying to say you've never met a lazy ass white worker?? Bullshit.

    • @debtminer4976

@James Tyler Doesn't really paint a fair picture for an entire race of people. These trades mainly deal with the ones who share a social security number between ten of them. Hop the border, make some $$$, send it home and vamanos.. In other words, you're getting Mexico's poor. Do you honestly think you'd get better results from America's poor? Highly doubtful, but we'll never know, cause apparently they aren't even applying.

My Uncle few years ago had me come over with My Friend who does do roofs and look at his Roof after he had a company Put new one on. As Soon as We got there, Friend was like, That Does Not Look Right at all. All this as we are going up the driveway. So Friend went up on Roof and started looking around. Well The Company Did Not use a Single Nail(Or Screws) They used Silicon Caulk.(Guessing for it to last at least the 1 year warranty they gave.) The Ridge Cap was similar to what you had Just Shingles that were cut and Caulked down.
Friend called someone and within a hour had County building inspector over to take a Look. in the End, Uncle took the company to Court, Friend and the Building inspector were there to give a report and Uncle was able to get all of his Money back and bit More. FYI this wasnt the Lowest Bid. He actually went with the One that was the 2nd to highest bid too. He had 5 Bids.

Nope. I literally just got home from the same type of job but it was so much worse. Literally random pieces of metal for drip edge, different screws for screen doors, and so much rot it would make ya sick. Stay roofing man!

"Ok so instead of using nails to hold down these shingles, what we're gonna do is just light the roof on fire and the heat will stick them down. That's how the pros do it."

I've roofed for 18yrs. It never falls you will always see some f-ed up things on every roof you have to do. I've seen some of the most bizzare shingle jobs on almost every roof I've torn off. I'm never amazed.!!

Part of me feels bad for these people, but they got what they deserved by being cheap and wanting it now. Any good trade will always have to schedule some lead time bc they do real work.

Hey man I can relate to that, had a customer a few years back pass up on me for a few 100 bucks. I am a drywall finisher so way less important than a roof. Needless to say the finish she got was horrible. Sometimes it pays to hire the right people.

Damn I love that racking and minus one inch overhang. Customer asks for duration shingle (premium) and gets sold the China special. 🤣
