- Worst roof ever installed - leaking vent pipe collar repair. It looks like someone tried to do a pipe collar repair previously. Just a few minutes into the repair it was obvious they didn't know what they were doing!
It appeared they cut shingle short and just tucked them under the next shingle. We removed the plastic pipe boot to install an aluminum one as well as installed a pipe vent cap. please hit the thumbs up button and subscribe to the Grand Roofing channel, so you don't miss another video.

That good old 1AM content - Laying in bed, knowing nothing about roofs yet still enjoying this video. Great work.
Haha thanks
Legit, i kinda want to see a good roof :D
Same! Literally 1:10 am! Watching content to help with my own roof
This made me laugh because it’s true.
Tanks to Gravity it all works. Shingle Logic.. One piece under the other.. Very satisfying.
I’m an electrician that somehow ended up on a roofing channel.
I subscribed anyway, because it looks cool and, this dude seems to know what he’s doing.
As much as I hate to admit it, I got tired of replacing neoprene boots all the time. We all know that they only last 5 to 10 years before UV damage makes them split. So I started doing one of two things, convince the homeowner to upgrade to lead boots, or just slap a repair collar on it and be done. I saw no reason to pull shingles to only put another crappy neoprene boot back on it. Probably just me being lazy, but the result was exactly the same.
Plastic boots on almost every roof I’ve ever torn off, very rarely were they leaking and if they were the roof was past it’s lifespan anyways
@@Beandiptheredneck I assume you are in Canada. I would think the UV degradation you all would see there would be quite a bit less than we see in Kentucky. I've also seen a huge difference in longevity in neoprene boots depending on manufacturers. I can tell you that I've torn off many neo boots that were still in good shape. But in my area, I've seen more that had failed in 10 years or less. Just my observation.
This wasn't leaking because of it being plastic or neoprene. The leak was actually because somebody did a horrible job installing shingles around it. They simply cut part of the headlap of and tucked it up under the next shingle just a little bit.
@@GrandRoofingInc I have seen that a lot too. No attention to detail. The last crew I ran had standing orders to not cover up a flashing or boot till I had looked at it. A sad as that sounds, it kept my warranty work to almost zero. Of course I still had a few issues, like an idiot who bounced a nail gun against a poly double bubble skylight and shot a nail right into the corner🙄
@@georgegroot9704 I don’t know that there would be a huge difference in UV, we still have very long hot summers. Pretty well everything around here is duraflo brand
I have been roofing for almost 25 years. Been in business for 12. I've watched all your videos and every single thing you do and your methods, are identical to mine. Its nice to fi ally see a fellow roofer who actually knows what they are doing and talking about. Keep up the great work. Guys like you and me are actually giving roofers a GOOD name. Cheers brother

I RESPECT ROOFERS. TY FOR ALL YOUR HARD WORK
No plastic flashings on a roof! Trouble in the making after a few years of sun. Wow what a mess hiding under the extra shingles someone thought was a good idea. Your repair looks great and leak free.
these are the roofers we need, not the ' cutting corners make it easier' ones
Good to see someone who takes pride in work not a roofer do commercial refrigeration and see a lot of hacks in my line as well good to see there are people who take pride in what they do not to look good but to do it right because it’s the right thing to do
This is so very helpful thank you. I have had a awful smell in my home just a night and this could be it.
I'm having a similar problem on my roof, they made a continuous flashing where it meets the wall... I'm going to try to install the segmented flashings. Thanks for the video! Greetings from São Bento do Sul - Santa Catatina - Brazil
Yeah, I really like the POV mounted camera videos ... a birds-eye view of what you do and how you're doing it. Almost ASMR ... LOL. Thanks for the great videos - Muddypaw🐾
I was a roofer for years back in my younger days, brings back memories. 👍🏻👍🏻
Imna roofing contractor in Ga.
I use your videos to train my Project Managers so we can make sure our Subs put on a good roof.
Thank you for the content!
I want my 10 percent
Lol you can't teach your subs???? Must not be a roofer hahaha or your subs aren't roofers smh just a salesman with a nice truck
I work in the warranty/service department for a large home exterior company. I fix everything from doors, windows, siding, roofing, gutters, and so on. I always am searching for new easy ways to do my job. Thank you for your videos. Even though I am comfortable doing my job, its always nice to watch informative videos to sharpen my craft. Well done, keep up the good work!!!
what not to do... thanks for showcasing the bad and how to do it right
You are making roofing great again your doing a fine job keep on roofing and uploading.
Went from watching pressure washing videos, to being recommended lawn care videos and now being recommended roof repair videos.
Should have put a hood on the other vent cap as well. Wouldn't bother me but some people will be obsessed with the inconsistency.
I appreciate this video. Replaced my flashing after trying various fixes due to the lack of thinking to try RUclipsing a video on how to solve the issue. Thank you for making this content free and fun!
Interestingly shortly after I finished the repair we got hit with a heavy rain storm. I rushed to the attic to see if it worked..not a drip was observed! Feeling like a champion right now
This is a sound repair. Being an architectural sheet metal worker ive come across plenty of botched flashing jobs by roofers and carpenters. No drip edges, lack of stripping flashing in, exposed screws in valley flashing, lack of a proper metal cricket or shingle. Step flashing done wrong. Exposed faced nails in shingles and so on. Glad to see someone sticking to his trade doing what he knows best 👍
I’m only a homeowner in TX who has a severely damaged roof, which is getting a total replacement starting next week. I’ve learned a lot watching your videos. Thanks and keep it up! Fascinating to learn why roofs are built like they are.
Thank you! Let me know, give me an update how it goes when the project is done.
How did the replacement go?
My replacement roof has now been done for over a year. Everything from soffits up was replaced. It looks great and has held up great. Wish my experience with my contractor was 100%, but it wasn’t. They mismanaged my job so badly (ex. did not cover exposed part of my roof and thunderstorm happened, drenching my home inside. I told them multiple times a day for a week the storm was forecast). After months of hassling and arguing, all was finally made right! As with most things in life, finding an excellent contractor is way harder than it should be.
One note, thanks to videos like this, I was able to discuss something I knew nothing about, in a reasonably educated fashion and properly advocate for myself. So important to not getting screwed! So THANK YOU!!!
@@daaaMook
Glad my notification led to an update haha, sorry to her about the negative experience. About to become a first time home owner myself so I'm kinda just drifting through the YT recommended and getting my knowledge up
I’m an old lady and while I won’t be doing the work, I now know what to look for when they come to fix the leak around my vent pipe. Thank you. 22:37
Im happy he's getting money on the side from youtube, honestly he is wholesome
Seems like a genuinely good guy, not swearing every second word either which gets really old fast
@@Beandiptheredneck yup
Good job..... Easier to do it right the 1st time... Tear Off Replacement Areas are prone to Leaks and Blown Off Shingles....
My third comment, thank you for all the information I needed to get this job done right. I’m definitely grateful!
Special thanks for the vented dome pipe cover idea...totally unaware.
Been watching a couple of your videos and checked my roof this morning to see what was wrong and why it was leaking. Everything looked spot on and thought maybe it was just the wind blowing rain under, but after seeing this video, I have my doubts about the roof. Seems you really got to get under there to find out the problem if there is one. Appreciate the video and the info!
I make metal roofing for a living and some of these videos are horrible. Good job dude.
It is a joy to watch a professional at work. Nice job.
Thanks!
Cold weather we use a cheap pair of snips or a hook blade attached to an oscillating tool… Everyone has little tips and tricks 😉 Work looks awesome!
On my jobs, when I see what someone did before me, I'd say 90% is done wrong, 1/2 assed, or they just didn't care. So much of the work out there is terrible. There is very little pride or integrity. Good job fixing someones else's mess. Keep up the good work young man.
Truth. Unfortunate in our area, housing prices have skyrocketed in the last 2 years. Some properties have more than doubled. New housing is also going up like weeds in a ditch. You can't even buy a 2x4 at the hardware store anymore. Banks dont care if its a quality roof, it just needs a roof. Even the quality roofers are just slapping them on as fast as they can find guys to swing hammers. We had a roof put on and had to finish it ourselves. 5 month wait and they couldn't come back for the finishing because they were already off to the next job. We consider ourselves lucky as they at least left the uninstalled materials.
I have seen many videos about this particular repair. Yours is "top shelf".
Nice info!
I have worked for several large roofing manufactures over the last 20 years, and it’s amazing how many have botched-craftsmanship and these are Large Roofing contractors located in the DFW area. Ugh
Good stuff
Subed
Made me nervous when he was cutting a shingle right over the flexible part of the boot.
It shouldn’t penetrate the leather unless he REALLY presses
Your content is great.here in Vermont it's middle of winter and roofs are covered with snow.its way harder to make money in winter in Vermont
Your philosophy is great - you bring pride to your work which I'm sure will rub off onto others! 👍
Great host. Great information. Good to know there are people who still take pride in their work. I have to believe you're busy as hell due to your videos and reputatiion. Credit to your important profession.
I know this is an older video but I wanted to add to your install, usually here in Minnesota we would put ice shield around the pipe and when installing the flange caulk under on the sides and top never the bottom then on top of flange caulk sides and top to hold shingles down and help keep water from infiltrating under the roofing.
No one knows what they like. I mean how many of these people would of guessed they'd be watching a roofing video today. Just put out good interesting content and we'll watch it. The more interesting and informative the better. Vent pipe collars and other random things most people don't think of are especially interesting because most people don't know how they work or how they're installed. If you can get more videos on unique repairs or stuff people don't know much about those are the videos I like to watch.
I use an old school shingle remover instead of a flat bar. I makes life so much easier. Mine was home made by an 80 year old roofer that passed on to me.
Great video
Great video. Same place my leak is at. Nice to see a pro at work trying to help others. Thank you.
I love your videos. I learn a TON. A couple of years back I got a new roof installed on my home during the winter ❄️. Yikes I was sweating all winter long I Some how stumbled upon one of your videos. I’ve been hooked ever since !! Pretty much have watched them all !!!
Thanks for this! I'm a homeowner who's 20 years into a "30 year roof" and I've got a bad leak over my bathroom that I'm 95% sure is at the vent. I have a new plastic cap sitting in my garage to replace it with, but I think I may go get one of these aluminum ones instead.
Thank you for the great details showing the process! Hopefully I can get this (and one other leak) fixed and squeeze a couple more years out of this roof. My kid's a senior in high school and wanting to go off to college in the fall. Let's see... Education or a roof. 🤔😖
I like that trick of cutting on your flat bar, so you don't cut the shingle beneath.
Happy Labor Day.
Thanks for the great videos. Not being a roofer I still find all your info helpful .
Those added pieces of shingles are what i call dummy shingles. When someone wants to hide an area where the lines don't match or repairs when they don't want to take something apart they just go over and tuck under at some point to hide it
Exactly it looks good from the ground
You make it look easy brother!! I enjoy watching your vids. Always informative and well explained. Thanks!!
Good, precise and clear demonstration. A job well done. Definitely you are right. That’s why homeowners hire called the expert and if the expert does not do it right then the homeowner will gonna suffer.
Been a roofer for thirty years. I feel ya pain.
Dam needed I new vent for my bathroom didn't know how to go about installing one. Now I know the right way
I sure wish you were in Central kentucky. I'm having an awful time dealing with some fly-by-night contractors that a family friend of my mother's brought over to do some work and what they've done to her home is borderline criminal in my opinion. I've watched so many videos over the last month that if a roof were on ground level I would be one hell of a roofer.. I just cannot get over the heights
Really appreciate the knowledge. Thanks for taking the time to share.
Been watching your vids for a while now and I really appreciate a couple of things - one is that you are conscientious and pay attention to details even if it is inconvenient to do so. That shows character which, unfortunately, is in short supply - not necessarily owing to COVID. Second is related to the first - you care that a job is done correctly. Slipshod work seems to be pretty common in roofing (actually any trade) and I'm glad to see someone who doesn't settle for second rate.
you probably dont care at all but does any of you know a tool to log back into an Instagram account??
I stupidly forgot the password. I appreciate any help you can give me!
@Roy Derrick Instablaster =)
@Jase Harold thanks for your reply. I found the site thru google and im in the hacking process atm.
Looks like it's gonna take a while so I will get back to you later with my results.
@Jase Harold it did the trick and I now got access to my account again. I'm so happy:D
Thanks so much, you really help me out !
@Roy Derrick No problem :D
Great video! Helped me a bunch on my double wall stove pipe flashing repair.
I like your style good job
If you get a cushion from a sofa you'll be able to sit without sliding or even nail down both both works
Leaking vent stack boots at the pipe/boot junction... I've encountered this on numerous homes with roofs near the end of their useful lives. So, I just get a new rubber boot and slip it over the pipe bringing it down to within a few inches of the old one like an umbrella. The homeowners can have all the vent stack boots replaced when they get around to replacing the roof.
I can't tell you how happy folks are when you give them a perfectly functional stop-gap solution at pennies on the dollar compared to other repair estimates.
Of course, if the leak is at the roof deck level, some exploratory surgery and repair will be necessary.
Watching your videos to know what to look for and what the cause, effect and remedy might be for common concerns. As a home inspector, I appreciate you sharing your experience and knowledge.
Really great job man. You definitely know your shit. I do this exact same thing for a living in CA where it's over 100 for many days out of the summer. My dad and brother would always tell me, "There's alot of bad roofers out there."
Those guys likely used the shingle-tops for the starter, and then used the remainder for some other area, like that pipe flashing.
Looking forward to more repair videos, keep it up brother
Thank you.
I would have put caulking under those exposed nails and on top also. Maybe it overkill
but it goes further to prevent leaks.
We got our roof replaced a few years ago. The guys were going to reuse the old caps and vents that were old and needing of replacement. My dad got new pipe collars for them but not bathroom vent, the other day I was looking up the attic and saw the vent was broken and the tube from bath fan wasn't attached. My dad didn't seem to care about it because it's not leaking. Only now drywall in his bathroom is deteriorating and still he doesn't care. I will be getting someone to replace it.
$5 pipe boot where the rubber seals deteriorated in the summer months here in Texas. no bueno. Lead boots one piece sleeve, $30. Best quality. You must be up north. New subcriber
Cutting shingle tips angles called "dovetailing"
Need a video on how to remove a regular ridge cap and install ridge vent cap.
Love the trick with cutting the shingles on an angle like you pointed out.
I put plumbing vent caps on all the time, it makes it easier to use a silicone caulking to stick it to the pipe, then tighten with screws if needed. I have yet to have an instance where the cap didn't stay with just the silicone caulking (worked in 60mph winds). I can say though it probably won't last through a tornado though, but that's OK, likely the whole house wouldn't either
Nice man 👍
Easy to follow, thanks for the extra tips 😀
Good job, a very good demonstration. I believe everything was done very correctly. I'm a roofing expert myself.
Self proclaimed expert roofer your killing me smalls
Good work
I just found the channel I really like it
It's good to see good honest contractor's out there sharing there skills keep up the great job👍👍
Your videos are a great source of information for new roofers like me. Keep up the good work! You have some pro tips that have helped me out a ton... Going to start putting my flat bar under my cuts on repair jobs from now on =D
Glad it could help! Where are you watching from or what state you work in?
I do my work out of West Michigan. Just started roofing this year and I've learned most of what I know from your channel and a few other roofing youtubers. Can't thank you guys enough!
You're welcome, Not a problem!
Great how to video - keep them coming....
Watching a master at work. Love you explain as you go. Subscribed
Great Job!
You make it look easy! Great video and lots of great info! I hope you get a billion subscribers... You deserve it.
Just liked and subscribed. Good work young man. I did construction for years. My roofing days are over. I used to get sucked into 6 or so roofing jobs per year helping friends and family. Small crew usually multiple days per roof job. Quality not speed should be the focus. I was taught by old timers and grew on my own with the newer methods and products introduced to the craft. I don't know many roofers who have to go to the gym.
I did roofing and siding when I was younger, I dabbled in a few trades before I settled on carpentry.
I've been working for myself as a handyman and I want to get back to working for someone else and with a crew again.
I saw an ad looking for a journeyman roofer with commercial experience, that's not me but I applied anyways, I'm a journeyman carpenter with roofing experience, but mostly residential.
Well, I didn't get the job, but I did find out that position paid $65 an hour. (It's a traveling job so per diem too)
So I just landed a job as a traveling roofing laborer with a commercial roofing company. I'm going to get that commercial experience !!!
And in 6 months to a year I should be pulling down that $65. 🤑
you are a master of your craft i respekt you alot
Nice repair man I do my pipes the same exact way but sometimes I use metal roofing screws on the bottom of the pipe boot metal so they won’t pull out like nails do sometimes if the decking isn’t that good, in your case the decking looks solid so nails are fine, it’s good to see other roofers like yourself that cares to do a good job unlike a lot of other roofers out there
I'm not a roofer but I've worked with them and for a dozen or so roofs. Seeing stuff like this blows my mind. Do your homework people before you let anyone on your roof. If the roof fails it will cost you every thing ender too.
Good point on key word I always start with how to.... thanks for asking 👍
Na is good. I like learning details
Good job
great video on pipe boot
Very thorough. Love to see a pro at work. I'd hire you in a heart beat. i hope the home owner reported the dishonest rip off artist that installed the previous boot,
That moment when the homeowner was the one that did the "fix" originally, lol.
Best tutorial I’ve found!
I like your videos. The more the better. Always good to see content from real roofers like yourself.
At least they had the vents running out of the roof... Saw one the other day where two vent pipes stopped inside the attic. Gotta wonder how the building inspector let that fly.😉
Enjoy the aromas lol😂. Imagine a 105 year old city water system where everyone eats tacos in the neighborhood and washes it down with meisterchow!
I worked 4 my dad who had a roofing and siding company in the town I grew up in and I am amazed at the horrible crafmenship of the work you come across. It is obvious to me that the roofing jobs you look at are installed by blind criminals!!
It is really amazing the bad handwork you will come across out there...I remember one time, was sent out to inspect an installation as an electrician. What I saw was really ugly, dangerous and just so wrong. I explained the problems to the customer, and called the the worker that made it an armature that needs to go to jail. But...as it turned out...It was made by my colleague from the same company I was working in....damn...
Don't leave us with a cliffhanger. What happened to the colleague?
We call it "hacking" around here lol. Lot of hackers that make us money though. Keep up the good vids.
nice work
I’m a roofer. I’ve been on roofs 1million times worse lol. Tbh the roof looks in great condition minus the one ripped shingle
I guess you could say it looks okay but when you walk over it there's a lot of things not done very good. This was a new roof right before this owner bought it. Third time I have been out in different areas for different issues. It might look okay but it's not a good roof.
So nice to see other roofers doing all the things I do, ESPECIALLY cutting those corners in cut valleys especially. U say that to most guy and they don’t even know what your talking about , then I ask if they did it, and I check and sure enough there all there...🤮
