  • Bad roofing Roofer training video for what not to do.
Worst roof ever installed! We got a call to inspect a roof issue that was flagged by a home inspection. Upon arrival we noticed a few things definitely not done right, before even setting the ladder up. As soon as I got onto the roof it was apparent this was the worst roof that I have ever seen in my 17 years of roofing! The video is a little long but it covers a lot of stuff done absolutely wrong, so you can learn what not to do.

Where it's not entirely messed up another coat of paint may still be a cost saver (aside from that type of finish being a B to work on). But my God. I literally got emotional thinking about the cost, but more than that, the trauma this is to those home owners.
It's not easy at all to have your trust violated like that, as a housepainter I understand the nervousness I encounter in customers at times.
That said there's a lot of predatory customers. But I understand the legion of nervous nellies once you offer your work.

@@GrandRoofingInc We have name and shame TV documentaries to help stop this kind of scam in the UK so why don't you at least print the companies name and details that did this here as part of your video to help others know where not to go. Some poor home owner is going to lose a lot of money getting this put right and probably money they can't afford. My heart goes out to the home owner as I was scammed of $17'000 having my classic Jaguar restored and all I got back was $1'500......

Doesn’t matter how many layers water damages quicker when it doesn’t move. Literally water that is slow will corrode anything. Some of their sheets and edging were backwards allowing water to drain mostly down the sides and into crevices. Most of the rain doesn’t drain properly with this roof making the middle sections not the weak spots but all of the seams and crevices on the sides that they left. You can’t have water draining down your wall. It’s mostly the walls being destroyed then the roof it’s self on this one. You only know when you remove the material and find the water damage.

As an inspector, I've adopted the "first 20 minutes, it's a dog" approach. If there are issues this severe in the first 20 minutes of inspection, I call the client and tell them it's a dog, and ask if they want to continue. They can start looking for a better buy, and I don't have to charge them for a full inspection. I get their next inspection and extreme trust as well.

My guess is that the homeowner got very high prices from the legitimate roofers because of the million peaks and valleys and complex corners and windows butting right up to the roof and then some loser came in and said he could do it for less and they thought the other roofers were trying to scam them. That is one complicated roofing project.

Hard to explain obv lol

I run a handyman service and metal roofs are just one of the things I do. When called for a roof leak, it is common to find the same problems as the roof in this video. I loose a lot of roof jobs to people that put on metal and a ridge cap and nothing else and call it done. When I give them an estimate to do the same roof but done correctly with all the trim, I'm told "your just trying to rob people".

Very technically advanced options were used in this roof job !! This man is just jealous !

BUT its evident there are major issues and even if I were hired to.work.with the company doing this, id never be able to sit back and let this continue.. id have to say, do it right or don't do it at all... if that means I'm fired so be it... ive walked off many jobs and informed the homeowners that they were prob in for a bad time ahead... I quit a company 8 years ago bc the boss was maybe using 3 nails a shingle, and expected us to do the same bc he wanted to save money.. it nailed 5-7 nails per shingle and he said 'that's NOT how I want it done I wanna save could to save money' lol I said if I cant nail it right, I'm not doing it at all ill quit and he thought I wouldn't... so I left but NOT before telling the customer what they were about to face... I left my name and number and info with the customer, that winter I got a call.. was major leaks and couldn't reach the contractor.. provided the customer with his address to reach out and I recommended a company and from that im now hired by a guy who takes serious pride and passion in his work...

My first job was helping a contractor, I worked for him about a year. I am no expert but I understand how things are suppose to work. Will admit never installed a metal roof nor would I attempt it on anything with valleys. But this is exactly why at least couple times a day I look over what is going on. I try not to be overbearing and an ass about it. I will talk to the guys, offer them something to drink. If it looks good I will will tell them so. I don't nit-pick over any tiny thing. But stuff like this I would refuse to pay for until fixed. The first time I had my house roofed they put OSB, felt paper and shingles under my ridge vent. Was no way my roof could vent. I told them I wasn't paying until that was fixed because I pointed it out as they were doing it. They went ahead finished said they were going to cut it from underneath from the attic afterwards. I thought that is going to be a chore but thought ok. They finished, packed up and left. I asked my wife if she heard them walking in our attic, she said no. So I went in the attic they had not touched it. The next day the contractor wanted payment. I told him when they fixed the ridge vent. He tried telling me they did. (He had left his crew here alone when they did it.) I told him to go look. He promised to send his guys back to fix it. They returned when I wasn't home. When I returned home they said it was fixed and wanted payment. I asked how they fixed it they said they took the vent up and cut it out with a circular saw then replaced the vent. I said it's odd there was not a sign of sawdust on the shingles. That I was going in the attic to look. They left as soon as I said that. A month later the contractor sent me a letter he was putting a lean on my house. I sent him a letter back with photos and copies of estimates from other contractors to repair the work. I told him I would be glad to see him in court. Never heard from him again. A old lady had them do her roof a block away. 8 years later she had to have the roof replaced. The contractor that redid her roof said they nailed the mechanical vents to the decking and did not bother cutting a hole for them to work. They were basically spinning roof ordainments. So a few years ago I hired a high school friend of my wife's husband who is a contractor to install a metal roof. Was nervous about that. My house was built in 1900 so nothing is square. But this guy was an artist it looks great! He even taught me to flash a valley on a metal roof. They didn't miss a nail or screw on clean up. They used foam cushions to work off of to keep from getting burnt on the hot metal and not scuff the metal up.

    • @GrandRoofingInc
      @GrandRoofingInc  3 года назад +3

That's sad that contractors would do that! I have seen that same thing here. What's it take like an extra 10 to 15 minutes to cut the ridge opened before installing it? Instead of spending an hour or two to remove the ridge cap and vent to then cut the ridge open, install brand new products to finish it correctly and get paid. They would be out what a few hundred dollars but they would be paid. I don't understand how some people think! Thanks for sharing!

In my experience the "builder" is usually an unqualified friend or relative. Houses are the biggest investment that most people will make in their life and yet so many home owners fail to hire trained, qualified trades people with the proper insurance, etc. and to vet the companies before signing a contract. Speaking of contracts, always get one that lays out the exact nature of the project, materials used, timelines and a progress payment schedule. Never be pressured to sign anything, pressure is a red flag indicating you should walk away. NEVER give a large percentage of the job cost in advance. Some advance money is reasonable however and should perhaps be made at the time of material delivery.

Wow. I installed my own metal roof this year. I spent hours on youtube learning how to do this. I made a lot of mistakes but overall my installation blows this away! Last week we had our first rain since I put up the new roof. I found one tiny leak and that was coming down the furnace vent. I didn't caulk around the top of the vent seal and water got in through at the seam. Easy fixed with a spot of Novaflex. I'm not a builder or a roofer, but this job defies even the most basic common sense. The contractor should be reported to the contractor licensing board in your state.

I lean toward the "home owner special" though because this house has additions to the additions. The framing/structure of the house and the siding looks like a "home owner special". I'll bet if you looked at the interior finishes, they also look this bad. Tell the buyer to RUN from this money pit.

As an HVAC/ex union sheet metal worker on offended by that roof. Occasionally we would have to install equipment curbs on metal roofs and I'm definitely not an expert on roofing but that is awful. If any journeyman came on my job and couldn't cut metal smooth with no fishhooks he was gone by the end of the day. I was thinking it was installed by a 3 tab fly by night roofing contractor till I saw the foil tape. That is polybutene tape we use to cover testing holes in ductwork and not cheap, flashing is probably cheaper an will hold up to uv damage. Probably installed by an unlicensed HVAC guy doing side work. I would love to see the HVAC system probably matches the roof

I'm looking into installing a metal roof for the first time and clicked on this video to watch some examples of what not to do. Goddamm, you were not kidding, this is total garbage. Who knows the actual circumstances, a lot of people will go with the cheapest quote they get and there are people out there who don't know what they are doing, add all of this together and you have a disaster. At least the buyers didn't skimp on the home inspection which will save them from buying a freakin headache.

I recently had my roof done and I'm not happy either. What I discovered is that even if the company is a reputable company, they subcontract the job to subcontractors who subcontracts to subcontractors. In my case, there were 4 levels of subcontracts. The company is big but the crew that did the actual work ended up being a family from Mexico who hardly speak any English consisting of an uncle, a 25 yo nephew, his 25 yo friend and his wife... yes his wife, whom I saw used my roof as a learning tool. Why I say that? Cuz the nephew and friend were doing the nailing (the uncle dropped them off then left) then I saw 1 of them handed the nail gun to the wife. She nailed like it's her first time and the husband was taking videos of her nailing. They were laughing and taking selfies. After she nailed about 5 shingles, she gave the nail gun back to the guy. The end result was okay... not good but okay. The shingles weren't lined up straight (looks wavy when you look down the line of shingles) and 1 shingle was torn. When the uncle came back, I pointed out the issues to the uncle, but he just shrugged it off. When I saw a 95% full tube of caulk in the dumpster, I picked it up and said I wanted to use it to caulk the torn shingle. The uncle finally said he will do it. I brought up the issues with the person from the company (the person who did the estimate and contract). He came and looked at the issues and he also brushed it off as it's nothing. He even suggest that it's my roof... that if my roof is croaked, the shingles will not be straight... putting the blame one my roof instead of their workmanship. He even said he can't get it to be laser straight. I'm not asking for laser straight. I just want it to look nice and professional like the other roofs.
The other thing I don't like is the left-overs. They left me the left over shingles but took everything else as if it's theirs. I paid for it, why do they take it as if it belongs to them... without asking me? There was a roll of felt paper that was only half used. The uncle came back and took it. A box full of nails, they came back and took that too. They promised me 3 sheets of plywood but used up only 2. They kept the 3rd. The contract said they will paint the adjacent fascia board, they didn't want to paint it until I insisted. They didn't even bring a paint brush so I gave them 1 of mine to use. They got my left-overs, which they said they will use in their other projects. By doing this, they saved even more money... my money. You would think that if they use my left-overs, the next homeowner will be charged less. In your dreams. It's hard to get good contractors these days. They should do the work as if it's their own house/roof. But they just want it done as fast as possible by doing as little as possible with little regard to quality.
