Leather Round Tool Bag / Bicycle Bag - Leatherworking

- May 5th & 6th 2018, I was in Birmingham for Makers Central. The show was great and I met a lot of awesome makers. Few weeks before the show, I was contacted by Jim from @Wavecycles on Instragram. He told me about his idea of gathering a bunch of makers for a collaboration which would be making a bike. Every makers involved would have to make a part of the bike and during the weekend of the show, we would put all the parts together to give birth to the "Spirit of Collaboration". I thought this was a brilliant idea and was immediately on board. As I had never made one before and wanted to give it a try, I decided to make a leather round tool box to hang behind the saddle.
But life happens and some of the makers initially involved couldn't make it to the show. So Jim, Ellen from Craft with Ellen and I brought what we made and we finished building the bike, late on a saturday night, in a parking lot near the hotel. Some other friends came with us to film and take picture and just be there, and it was awesome. Al took had a run with the bike, took it to the hotel lobby and Laura Kampf also had a small run with it inside the hotel.
The bike is 8.5feet long (something like 2.65m) and was for Jim and the makers involved an exercise in building a unique bike using scrapped and recycled parts, easily available materials and little to no specialised tools, in hope to inspire others to give it a try.
FOr the round saddle bag, I used 2.6mm thick vegetable tanned leather, engraved it with a Trotec laser at my local makerspace, dyed it with brown leather dye, and put two coats of leather varnish on it. All the hardware is brass and I really like the contrast of brown leather and brass hardware. I hope you like it as well.
I was really to be part of the build and can't thank Jim enough for asking me to be a part of it. The idea of uniting makers from the world, with different skills and knowledge around a common build was a brilliant idea and I'm ready to do it again anytime.

Watching you and Ellen putting your parts on Jim’s awesome bike in the car park was fantastic. Cheers Red!👍🏻
Richard Martin Thanks Richard. It was really fun. Good times. 😊
Absolutely, I can only agree! :)
I'm sorry to bother, but could you point me to where I could watch this video? I'd very much like to. =)
Josisbundo Couves I don't think there is one that captures it all... I only have a part of that where the add-ons were not on the bike...
Oh. OK, then. Thanks anyway. =)
Red you are so inspiring it makes me want to have a play with leather. Beautiful project as always :-)
Thank you Pam. If I inspired you to give leatherworking a try, my job is done here :) Thanks for watching!! :)
Awesome work
Thank you very much!!
What were you using to seal the leather? Great video. 👍
HadoKing Thanks a lot. It's a leather varnish. Japanese product. Works very well but hard to find.
Nice vídeo, but as suggestion you should remove the background music , it’s distracting
Thanks, but I think you have a mute button on your device.
for the middle button I would put a bigger one, what do think about that?
Really nice box by the way ;)
That's the only size I had, but maybe a bigger one would have been nice. Thanks a lot :)
Show maravilhoso
Muito obrigado!!
awesome piece, but i think the stain job could do with some work, unless that was the desired effect.
Thank you. That was the desired effect.
Really excellent job then, i really love the shape of it.
@@Perichron Thank you very much. I appreciate it😊

Thank you very much!! :)
The internet is good and bad place like how to work with leather and how people are turned on by leatther
I'll stay on the 'work with leather' side :)
What a great job! I bet that was quite a satisfying project! All the best!
Thank you very much Scott!! :)
I've labored for nearly 40 years as a Woodwright. I've always felt honored and humbled when someone expressed appreciation of watching me ply my craft. It was a true pleasure to watch you work.
Thank you very much Richard. It does the same to me. I really appreciate your kind words.
This is awesome buddy 🤗🤗👍🏽 so cool
Thank you Nick. Glad you liked it :)
Awesome work! So glad we got to see it in person! 👍🏼👍🏼
Thanks a lot guys!! :)
So cool to actually get to see how you made it :D Those round end caps are great, love the process you used!
Thank you Ellen. The caps were the tricky part. I guess there is a lot of different way to make them but this method seems to work pretty well ;)
Now that is a cool round saddle bag I may make one for my bike. Thanks for the tutorial.
Thank you Bruce!! Coming from you I really appreciate it! Please do, I would love to see your take on this😊
Fair Dinkum awesome mate, I cannot believe till now I haven’t been subscribed to your channel, love this project & my Grandmother was a leather worker 👍👍👍
No problem Dirk. Welcome aboard :) Happy you liked it. So your some kind of Viking and your grandmother was a leather worker. Wow, we got some stuff in common ;)
Great project Red! My wife just bought me some starter tools to get into leather working. This is wonderful inspiration to get me started
Thank you ! Oh cool !! That's really nice of her. I hope you'll enjoy it. Leatherworking is great and I'm really happy if I can be an inspiratin. If you have question, don't hesitate :)
The Redsmith thank you.
I absolutely love your channel. If I may offer one small improvement to your cutting?
The Japanese style knife (or Korean, etc) that you're using tends to get straighter cuts by pulling the knife towards you vs. pushing it. Sort of like the woodworking tools, they seem to be designed to work on the pull stroke. In fact, I've actually been able to do away with rulers because the blade gets such straight cuts.
Of course, go with what feels good and gets the job done best, but I figured to pass on my own experience with those fine tools.
Thanks a lot Anthony, you're totally right, that's how this tool is supposed to be used. Although, when I cut from a specific point to an edge of the piece of leather, I prefer to push instead of pulling. This way, I get a cleaner cut from the starting point :) Thanks for sharing your knowledge, it's what's this channel is all about :)
Really great
a former customer of mine has made such bags with round wooden discs on the sides
Echt super
Thank you very much. It was my first time making on and it was pretty fun to make :)
Vielen Dank.
Really cool! I love the method for making the round parts. It came out great!
Thanks a lot Bruce. Glad you liked the video :)

What beautiful sentiment, makers coming together to create. I can't think of another community that I would rather be involved in. No egos just people passionate about sharing their love of creating. Now that's the makers spirit.
That's exactly what this build was about, and you're totally right about our community! And I love it. Thanks for watching :)
Nice job. I'm shopping for one for my 1983 Norco 12 speed. I needed to patch my front tube yesterday and luckily my wife had some tools under her bike seat.
Thanks a lot! Wives, what would we do without them :)
Awesome. Just awesome and an amazing part of an epic collaboration. Thanks G. 🌲🦊🌲🤗
Thank you !! It was a great idea and a lovely project :)
Beautiful work as always Red. It all came together brilliantly, and well done for keeping it all under wraps. 👍
Thank you Phil! Much appreciated :)
Not sure how I missed this. That’s really cool. Both the pouch and the bike. Nice work.
Thanks a lot Chad. A lot of people did. It was on saturday night. Maybe during dinner... glad you liked it :)
It was awesome, they prepared it all on the parking lot and Al drove it into the lobby :) I tried to convice the manager that we might bring it up to the bar but he wasn't too happy about the lobby part already... :D
Oh you talked to the guy ? I missed that part :D
Yes, right when Al drove it in and I ended the footage I gave you... :D
Kjellski some people are too uptight. It was a private party. He shouldn’t have said a word if I drove a Harley in there on one wheel.
Nice video Red. I love how you can produce a fairly short video but still show every step of the project in detail.
Thank you very much. I try to show every step in a non-boring way. Glad you liked it :)
Beautiful job! What is the name and artist of the song you used? Fits perfectly
Thanks a lot. Sorry, I don't remember the name of the song or artist, I found it on epidemicsound.
very inspiring and well done!! specialy moulding of the sideparts. just made a saddlepouch myself as a present and it turned out to be very challenging. thx for sharing your work.
Thank you very much Nika. It's a challenging build for sure. Going slow and thinking ahead is the key ;)
Thanks for watching!
Turned out fantastic !
Thank you Olivier!
I want one of these for my motorcycle the stuff they have out there these days in the motorcycle shops are garbage... that be the perfect size hold my tools...
Thanks a lot. Very true!
Great result. Quick video, but I still feel I learned enough to make one!
That's great Fave, please do, and share the result :) Thanks a lot for watching!
Great video - Very curious as to what type of "cnc"(?) machine was used to produce the logo?
Thank you. I was a laser engraver Trotec. My local makerspace has one. Thanks for watching.
Great design. I like how you created the round end caps. 👍
Thank you very much ! I wondered for a long time how I could make them, and it seemed to me to be the easiest way :)
Hello,
Is there a video on the bike build this bag goes on? Caught just a glimpse near the end of your video. Thank you.
Great bag build!
Hello. Unfortunately there is build video of the bike. Only footage of the final assembly. Sorry. Thanks a lot for watching!!
You really deserve more subscribers !! Thank you for all amazing works
Thank you Rani! I really appreciate it.
What kind of rubbery board are you under the leather when you punch your stitching holes? I use a Tandy poundo board, but it doesn't look nearly as thick as the one you are using.
It's just a board of thick pvc I bought in Japan when I started leatherworking. I'll soon have to buy a new one but there are are to find in France.
I have to say, I love how you drew the circle around the circle.... Never saw it done that way before..... Very nice.
Thank you very much! I'm sure there must be a tool for that, but sometimes, you just have to improvise :)
Really a nice project. The hardware is a nice choice for the color of the leather. If it were intended to mount on the handlebar, I'm pretty sure it would have had a local map engraved into the leather???? ;)
Thank you Charles. I did it would be an awesome idea. I'll keep it for the next time, thanks :)
Nice Job! Loved seeing your stuff on the bike in the lobby of the hotel at Makers Central.
Thank you very much. It was a great project and a wonderful weekend :)
Wow, serious skills, could you tell us where you got those beautiful green handled leather tools from, they are very nice.
Shelley Raskin Thank you very much!! I bought most of my leatherworking tools in Tokyo. The green handle tools are made by a company called Kyoshin Elle, and they are great 😊 Thanks for watching
This was strange in some way to me, The laser machine you have has to be somewhat costly? Yet most of the tools you use are very primitive. Yet you do some of the highest quality work I have seen. Maybe you couldn't tell me a little about how, why, except.
Leatherworking tools are not primitive. Traditional maybe. I don't own a laser engraving/cutting machine. It's a Trotec and cost a few thousands euros, can't afford it. I use the one they have at my local maker space. Thanks for the kind words :)
Super cool bike and bag! Does that sealant at the end waterproof the leather?
OahuMakerspace Thank you! With two coats the leather is protected but I would recommand to let it in the rain for too long 😊
I'm not sure how I missed this until now, but..... crazy cool work! WHOA
Thank you Sir! You were maybe too busy building cool stuff ? No worries, it happens ;)
Man that's COOL, that bike too! First time I seen one of your vids. cheers.
Thank you Rob. Glad you liked it. The bike Jim made is absolutely beautiful.
Welcome aboard!! :)
Thanks!
Amazing work! What type of leather have you used for this one? How thick?
Thanks a lot.
It's all written in the video description :)
Beautiful work Red!!
ESCAGEDO WOODWORKING Thanks a lot Eloy! 😊👍
Joli travail,video très instructive bravo
Merci beaucoup !
Can anyone tell me what product he used after applying the dye (at 3:13).
And what was the glaze product at (4:39)
After the dye, I applied neatsfoot oil, and then Super Shene to get a nice glossy efffect. Thanks for watching.
Red Smith magic 😀😀
Mr Geoffrey Smith Thanks a lot Geoffrey! Glad you liked it😊
Nice work Red. You always deliver the best video's. That was such a grate collaboration it was a amazing to se.
Thanks a lot mate. It was indeed a great thing to be a part of :) Thanks a lot for watching!
Just fascinating to watch you work, excellent.
Well done!
Thank you very much Paul. I truly appreciate your kind words.
I learned some good techniques from this video. I'd love to know what the device is used to etch the logo onto the leather at the start...
Subscribed.
Thank you and welcome aboard. I used a laser engraver at my local makerspace to turn the Makers Central logo on the piece. The machine is a Trotec Speedy 100 laser :)
Really beautiful amazing work.
Brian Prusa Thanks a lot Brian!!
Great work I prefer to work with oil tanned leather but it is still magnificent work
Thank you very much !
Really nice tutorial. Thanks for sharing. Do you have a pdf pattern for sale? That would be sooo nice ;0)
Thank you very much. Unfortunately no, this is an unique piece and I didn't make a pattern. I'll try to make one soon and sell it on my website. Thanks a lot for watching!
I'll stay tuned then ;0)
Another great leather job and what a nice project to be involved with!
Thank you Spartky, it was indeed a great project. Very hapy to have been a part of it. :)
I don't know how anyone can not like this video! Thanks for sharing!!
Thank you very much! I really appreciate it! Thanks for watching!
Suggestion: leatherworking tools 101. I think it would be useful for beginners like me.
I've been thinking about that for a long time, and even tried to make the video once. Other people did it and I'm not sure I could add a lot to it, but I'll give it a second thought ;)
Wow ! Absolutely gorgeous and awesome, Red ! Thank you
Thanks a lot Remy. Much appreciated. Thanks for watching!!
Nice work.True craftsmanship
Thank you very much!!
Realy well done! I bought one my motorcycle, but urs looks way better :)
Thank you! Much appreciated!
That was amazing to watch, your precision is incredible!
ShireenPlays Thank you very much. I realy appreciate it.
New to this channel.
Great work!
Subbed!
Thank you Travis, and welcome aboard!!
This is exactly what I'd like to make for a fork bag on our Harley Dyna Wide Glide. I just purchased some tooling leather, a three hole stitching punch, razor knife etc. Do you have any tutorial videos on how you did this or a pattern? The part that intimidates me the most is how you line up the stitching holes between the end caps and the body of the bag. Do you punch through both at the same time or ????
Turned out great by the way!
Thank you. The video is the tutorial, and no I don't have a pattern for sale right now. I will in a bit, when I'm done creating the pdf file for it. If you watch the video carefully you'll see how I punches the stitching holes. 1:06 for the straight lines, 2:25 for alignement, and 2:29 for the end caps. Thanks a lot for watching!
@@RedSmithWorkshop Ok, thank you!
That's an awesome piece and all but why a bicycle and not a motorcycle
Thanks a lot. It was a common project with two friends. One made the bike, the other one made the frame fabric and I made the tool box. Thanks for watching!
Já ganhou mais um inscrito. Professor muito bonito seu alforge. Poderia passar as medidas.. Obrigado.
Looks like a lot of work but the result is beautiful. Good job
Thank you very much. The hardest part was the reverse engineering. And the sewing. It's always the sewing ;) Thanks for watching.
That is awesome, very well made. could you tell me the dimensions please? I'd like to try making one of these.
Thanks a lot. It's roughly 30cmx10cm
@@RedSmithWorkshop thank you.
Great work, you have such a steady hand.
