  • In this video I’m making a leather tool roll for my chisels. I love the way it turned out! This is not the easiest project, but without the zipper pocket, it’s quite easy to make.

    MATERIALS:
    Soft leather
    Thick leather (leather belt)
    Zipper
    Lining fabric
    Sewing thread
    Contact cement
    TOOLS:
    Pen
    Aluminum ruler
    Angle ruler
    Carpet knife/fabric cutter
    Scissors
    Sewing machine
    Iron
    Pins and a sewing needle
    Rubber cloves
    Something to spread the glue with (I used a piece of wood)
    USEFUL TIPS:
    Never use steam when ironing leather.
    Use iron-on stabilizer on the soft leather edges.
    Use good ventilation when gluing, contact cement can have a very strong smell.
    SAFETY NOTES:
    Safety first! Always be careful with dangerous tools and make sure you know how to use them correctly.

    That was awesome!! It came out perfect and very handy. I actually need something to store my chisels...but maybe I will go for a solid shallow box with various compartments...not sure yet.

      Thank you so much! Really appreciate it! I would love to see you make that chisel box, sounds interesting! I would make a solid box too, but I don't have my own work shop yet, so I need something I can transport them easily in. So this works best for now! :)

    Great job, I have been thinking of making a tool roll myself. If you ever do this again, making another tool roll that is, You should think about adding a flap, that is, to cover the handles. This would help keep any of your tools from falling out and possibly damaging the blade end of your chisels. When it is rolled up the flaps would be tucked inside keeping the tools in place. But still an excellant job with every thing.

    I really like the gray leather. That looks awesome with the tan belt leather that you chose. I like how your design has the tools offset so you can get two rows, rather than just one. And the pocket is a really good idea for pens and maybe even a small rule.

    • @TheMinimalistMaker
      @TheMinimalistMaker  7 лет назад

      Thank you Bruce! I also love the color combo, it works well! Yeah, I was thinking that the roll would be more balanced if I had two rows. So it works! :)

    I am a leather maker. I have multiple sewing machines and enjoy thick leather. I was prepared to not like this video. I wanted to not like this video or the tutorial - but I couldn't. With the light leather you had and the machine you used - this is a VERY good solution to your problem. The monogram touches were amazing. My only wish is that you lived closer and could raid my leather pile and used my machines to make it stronger - but this should last a very long time. Well done and thank you for showing me I was being a leather snob. Great video.

      I like heavier leather as well. I am a hobbist though. I would say use a 4oz side leather next time with saddle stitching vs machine sewing.

    • @MrHondoMan
      @MrHondoMan 5 лет назад +1

      @@TheMinimalistMaker , problem you will have is that you used chrome tanned leather. This means the tanning process uses chromium and sodium. This will eventually harm your chisels. Think of a knife sheath. Knife sheaths are always made with vegtan leather. As soon as your video began, I saw your nice chisels and then the leather and I immediately cringed. Next time, use shoulder or neck vegtan. It will better protect your chisels.

    Another fantastic video! A very creative way to solve a problem. Eventually, over time, your cardboard box would have fallen apart. Making a wooden box to store chisels in would be too... bulky, awkward to transport easily, and make another box to find a place to keep. A leather roll makes perfect sense. And, as with all of your other projects, the attention to pure design is... it's just great! Congratulations on another great video!

    • @TheMinimalistMaker
      @TheMinimalistMaker  7 лет назад +1

      Thank you Michael! You always say the nicest things! The cardboard box was already falling apart a bit. And it's not very safe for sharp objects. So yes, the tool roll is exactly what I needed, because I don't have my own workshop yet and I need to move them regularly. Works great for now! :) Thanks!

    Very nice :) Some suggestions for successful tool roll storage: Don't use chrome-tanned leather for tools rolls (->rust), instead use veg. tanned leather. Add a vent hole to each tool slot. Very lightly oil the tools before storing them [see Paul Sellers video: Rag in a can oiler - the cheapest, simplest, best way to lightly oil tools IMHO].

    • @TheMinimalistMaker
      @TheMinimalistMaker  7 лет назад
