A common vegan argument is that meat eaters would not be able to kill the animals themselves and pay for someone else to do it. In most cases that would be true
Joey is a person that would actually be able to do this, proven by his past of actually trying to stab people to death. Sociopathy is in him.
At least all these meat eaters would not be able to do such an act themselves.
Most people would be able to kill/harm an animal (and possibly even a human) out of necessity (aka in a situation of danger), but, on an everyday basis where people have the CHOICE to NOT do so, they couldn't do it.
Like, if you'd present someone with a vegan pasta dish vs. a cow they'd have to kill themselves, most people would choose the pasta. However, if they were in a dangerous situation they could probably kill the cow if they'd have to. (for their own survival or for those of others)
Same case for Joey, he was able to harm another person because he himself and his loved ones were in danger. That doesn't make him a sociopath, this makes him human. @@MustardSkaven

The issue is less Joey getting animated in the first instance, you'd expect that, you have to assess if this person is a threat etc. However, it's clear that we get to a point where Joey knows there's no threat. Standing there saying "Blah, blah, blah etc..." over the top of that guy does align with what the guy says when he said Joey was acting like a child.
So, unfortunately, it does allow people to turn around and say "See, Vegans can't handle being challenged." or words to that affect. Now does their hypothetical statement make sense logically? No. They're saying because one person who's Vegan acted this way they all act that way.
However, especially in this country, given how fractured the UK society is at the moment and how easy it seemingly is to get people to pick a side, even on something they've never before thought about.
You'd hope someone of Joey's experience would do better, and be able to hold the bigger picture in his mind during this after realising there's no threat.

I think there was too much aggression on both sides of this argument. Even though I agree with veganism and am a vegan myself, I think perhaps the delivery of “are you going to cry” was a bit much.

@@kevinsmarx I don’t personally know anything about Ed’s upbringing, but I do appreciate your point about growing up differently. It’s certainly true that our upbringings, social environments and experiences are bound to have an effect on us. So I’m not socially unaware or unsympathetic towards anyone who has had a rough upbringing, and I do empathise with and respect Joey for being honest about his past and turning his life around. I really do. He’s a true inspiration in that way.
However, at the same time I do feel we need to careful not to inadvertently support, encourage or enable the kind of behaviour he portrayed in this video.
Yes, the guy having a go at him was completely out of order and seemed to be intentionally trying to trigger him by using his passed against him. Which is both cruel and cowedly. But I can’t fully agree that he gave Joey “no choice” at all but to react and retaliate in the way he did. What Joey did here was lower himself to same level as the guy having a go at him, which unfortunately just made things worse. In the end they both came across as quite childish and petty.
That said, of the two of them, I suspect Joey has the most potential to grow and learn from the experience, and to better himself, as we know he has already done.
I really hope this doesn’t come across as condescending towards Joey, it’s honestly not intended that way. And I’m not gonna pretend that if I were in his position I wouldn’t have felt triggered at all. But I do know I would’ve handled it better now than when I was younger…
Although admittedly, even as the wiser 46 year old man I am now, I still probably wouldn’t have handled it quite as well as Ed would. That guy reminds me of a well trained Zen Buddhist monk at times, so in hindsight perhaps he wasn’t the fairest comparison for me to have used.
On the other hand, the way Ed deals with difficult people and situations is something we can all learn and take inspiration from, regardless of our backgrounds and life experiences. It’s in our best interests to learn how to handle people and situations like the guy in this video in a more conducive and productive way, rather than inadvertently making the situation worse than it needed to be.
I’m honestly not trying to belittle or down-tread Joey here. I do have a lot of respect for him. But it’s my hope that he can learn from experiences like this, and use them as a platform to grow and evolve to yet another level. As he’s already proven that he’s capable of doing, having turned his life around in such an admirable and inspirational way.
Non of us are perfect (I for example have an unfortunate habit and tendency of typing way too much in replies like this one - someone send me an editor! lol - it’s something I know I need to work on), but we do all have the ability to learn from our mistakes and work on improving and bettering ourselves to the best of our abilities.

People drive me crazy with "animals eat other animals" and what does a real carnivore have to do with him eating animals which humans weren't designed to eat. Tell him the next time he's hungry go chase down a gazelle or a squirrel by foot, or say how their doctor said what's healthy. No doctor studied nutrition in medical school. It's not taught. The doctors who talk about it have studied it on their own. Dr. Colin Campbell has a PhD in nutrition so he can talk about it and has done 10 years of research and scientifically proved eating animals is dangerous to the health. It's also dangerous to the animals. No animals have to die for anyone to eat. I absolutely love eating the way I do and I cause no harm.

Joey I think you could've handled the guy in the very end better. He genuinely wanted to learn about veganism and wasn't acting toxic. Having a sit-down conversation with him for 20+ minutes like you usually do with people maybe would've changed his mind.
