What I've learned here is: have a really good model for texturing
The spaceship model itself is so detailed
Any texture would look beautiful on it...
This is crazy good, it's mind blowing how much information is just open now, you're helping a generation of indie filmmakers here just imagine what kind of stuff we'll all be producing in a decade!
said enough here, my exact comment u read my thought
This is insane man. Thanks so much for this!
Dude this tutorial was out of this world. Almost had me lost in space. I bet you didn't planet for puns to be your reply.
Those puns were stellar, I'm astronomically happy you liked it, just over the moon!😂
@@ChristopherFraserVFX Had me laughing so hard, I fell out of orbit. You can be so sirius. Glad you chimed in on the comet.
DUDE! this is AMAZING! Thank you so much for sharing this! 😃
Thanks for the kind words :D
Hey man! Cool utilization of AO node. Great job!
far and away one of the best blender tutorials. ever. thanks so much dude, i feel like i learned soo much just from the first minutes
Props for you sick voice, audio recording and texturing process!!!
First comment about my voice, thank you!
It's worth pointing out that this all relies heavily on detailed 3D models with alot of greeblies. In this case the model itself is a very detailed recreation of an ILM model.
But with that being said, this video have some nice tricks for such models. I didn't see the random per island node being used. It can help for some variety.
Oh definitely! It's hard to make any awful 3d model look THAT good.
As for the random per island thing, i honestly just forgot about that. Another great tool to have on hand!
This was fascinating to watch. I only wish I had this kind of time on my hands.
Mind.... blown..... One subscriber coming up!
Thanks so much! I learned so much from this
THANK YOU VERY VERY MUCH! This is something I almost desperately needed for my future creative work!
This is awesome, and its even better with a detailed model like this. Thank you for the info!
Nothing to say, your video is just perfect, everything is well explained! thanks for your work dude!
the only bad here is the app😁
This is one of the best layered detail and grunge tutorials I've ever seen. Thank you!
Of course of course 😄
Amazing tutorial, thanks for sharing you techniques. Could you make a video talking about you process from modeling hull panels on space ships? I really like the way the ship paneling and details look on these designs.
I would but I didn't model this! This ship was modeled by the very skilled Alexander Ivanov.
I know he uses 3ds Max and not Blender, but I can ask him and some of my spaceship modeler buddies how they model panels.
@@ChristopherFraserVFX oh ok, thanks
A screen shot of where everything is plugged in would really help. Cool video though.
Hey Chris - did you model this ship? The Corelian Corvette Blockade Breaker?
I did not! The ship in the vid was modeled by Alexander Ivanov. You can get it from Digital Shipyard on Artstation.
I am not that good of a modeler
I would love to see how greebles are baked into a texture. Blender shaders sadly can only be used in Blender.
dude, amazing...
So I take it this was the.obj file that has been imported into Blender with no incompatibility issues? The material groups come across as well?
adding imperfection :)
very well executed
Really cool! Thanks for the tutorial!
Man, this is SO useful. Subbed!
Not to brag but I think it's pretty useful, too. Thanks for the sub😀
I was hoping it would be about ways to add the greebles quickly.
Thank you for this one!
Great video like always!
Thank you :)
nice, though i dont get which part is so "ILM"... the fact that you used soap opera sample pack?
"industrial light and magic" its the company who made star wars vfx/3d animation
lmao
Very interesting!
Crazy cool!
Very cut to the core tutorial! Thanks!
I bought the pack on blender market not knowing about your website . Is that version out dated ? Or do I have to buy the one on your website because the model I'm using isn't coming out like the one from both videos.
Now that's great!
Thanks!😄
Really good info, but I feel like you could slow down a little and explain what each node is doing and the underlying principle a bit more. Like invert the value WHY? Add a gamma node WHY? Overall really fascinating, though.
Where can I download this model
artstn.co/m/LwVN5 by Alexander Ivanov. I can't recommend it enough!
If you're not feeling spendy you might also consider this one, by Kim Murzin: artstn.co/m/xA0vJ
What a fantastic tutorial!
Thanks! I think a lot of people will like this one
Is this out dated or does it have to be that model? because it doesn't work for me on my 3D model
What seems to be the problem in your scene?
the one ting i always ask myself in this area, how cool it would be, if the Software could be feed with actual data about the way dirt accumulates in reality. Like a simulation with a bunch of factors, for ajustment...
How cool would that be! I wonder what it would take to make that feature 🤔
@@ChristopherFraserVFX its so funny! „They“ say: „We „just“ need a picture, but it should „look“ real!“ But as soon as it should look real, you suddently have to know the „reality“ of this thing itself, that you want to show. And there is a lot to know even about the simplest thing… :)
It's so true, and it takes so much time to get good at faking it. Until we can simulate all of reality though, ambient occlusion will have to do
@@ChristopherFraserVFX i see a long future for artists 😁
That’s what the particle brushes in painter do!
Thanks for the texture tips!
I'm having trouble rendering out animations as multilayer exr files with aces (which I see you're using). When it goes to write the frame and move on to the next, it crashes every time. Any ideas?
Strange! I'm not sure what could be causing it. Check your temp directory on your computer for a crash log. The crash log will be named with the name of your blender project fine
Subbed, great tutorial.
Thank you!
your color space is set to utility+srgb+texture and plus you have one alpha set to straight...why you didn't tell about that?
That's just the same as the default color space when you're using filmic Blender. Since I use ACES, (which I'll talk about in a future video,) the names are just different..
I didn't actually realize the alpha on one of them was different, probably a mistake. It doesn't affect the final texturing bc we're not using alpha channels so it's okay.
LucasArts, hire this dude and put him to make XWing vs TIE Fighter 2 at once.
I'm curious to see how this would look rendered in Octane.
Looks amazing
Thanks!
Quick question regarding AO for dirt: does the model have to be one object if you untick the "affect local" box, and what needs to be done to the modifiers if so?
Yes, it does. I didn't cover that here, but that can be essential in some scenes so the dirt isn't affected by nearby objects.
Not sure what you mean by the last part. If you mean object modifiers, you shouldn't have to update anything.
Maybe try booleaning objects together if you wanna be real fancy and keep it all one object without joining them?
@@ChristopherFraserVFX Thanks for the reply!
I meant along the lines of something like "What if I end up having to join an object with a bevel modifier to one that doesn't?"
Oh, then depending on the order you join the modifier will either be applied to both objects or it will disappear. This kind of texturing process is kind of like texturing in another program, it will always be best with a fully completed model, but it'll still look good if you use it part-way through the process
@@YIIMM You could make a separate object. Boolean all the parts of the vehicle in to this object. When you boolean objects in this way it applies the bevel modifier before it booleans the object in. So objects that have a bevel modifier will get beveled and objects that don't have one won't get one. You can then set materials up on the original objects and when you boolean them they will keep their original materials.
Fantastic information on a great, yet (relatively) simple shader.
My only criticism would be that the video editing is a little fast and choppy...
Nonetheless, thank you very much
Thank you!!
And I'm with you on my editing, I've got a lot to learn about pace...
@@ChristopherFraserVFX it's generally ok.
The speed of delivery is fine.
The main 'choppy' issues are cutting to something else too soon after you finish showing something and another was cutting to something new but seemingly a couple of seconds into that section so it almost seems like a glitch that caused a couple of seconds to be missed out
Pretty easy fixes for those don't cut so aggressively / leave a little space before and after.
Nonetheless, thank you for excellent content
What about cavity maps? Do you bake it sometimes?
For my texturing entirely in Blender, usually I keep it fully procedural without any baking.
If I want to texture in, say, Substance Painter, that's usually when I'll bake maps (typically just in SP)
I love this tutorial, and it's awesome how these videos tie into a greater series for future spaceship designers, like me :)
Thank you! And if you like this, keep an eye out for my next video... I have something *extra* useful planned ;)
I feel this comment 🙂
thats great. do you sell or share the blend file with the shader?
Not yet, but I will have a tool that makes this process WAY easier coming out very soon
I know this is a year old...but I want to teach you about the audio processing technique of De-Essing. Please look this up as it will greatly enhance the quality of your videos.
It sounded fine to me in the edit at the time, I'll make sure to clean up my voice better next time. Thank you!
What's ILM?
Ilumination
It's a visual/special effect company. Industrial Light and Magic.
Industrial Light and Magic! The VFX company behind movies like Star Wars (the moderns ones, too)
@@ChristopherFraserVFX oh ok thank you!
🤦♀🤦♀🤦♀🤦♀🤦♀🤦♀🤦♀
와 사랑해요 진짜
I love "sick" lol ILM damn now you're dating yourself nice
ah C.corvette..
Indeed! Technically a little different from the movies, but very cool looking :)
Darn. Not going to be here for it!!! :(
That's okay! It's a video, so you'll be able to watch it later
Very good technic for sure...i buy your file in blenderamrket and is not what you show in this video...disapointment total
Dude, i literally cannot see what you are trying to do! It appears as if you are skipping steps!
This is not a tutorial...
What
Not even close to ILM.
fake artist.
