Thanks for this helpful vid. By seeing where the clips are I discovered that I can pop the whole thing off in one go by getting a guitar pick between the cover and the USB port, then tilting back until the rest of the cap pops off. Dead simple. But I wouldn't have known that without watching your vid first. Cheers!

You do know hard drives get damaged when your moving them while powered on. Even being near magnates can mess them up. A well looked after hdd used 4 hours everyday can last upwards of 10 years.
Most consumer grade hdd’s last on average 5 years

I have a HDD by WD. Wd green. Very sure it's atleast 8 years old and still running good. Shows 91% health. When they work, they work amazing. My dad got a wd green hdd which died in 2 months 🤣. He also had a Seagate which died in 5 months. I got it replaced and the replacement is running close to 2 years now. I think 2012 - 2018 was a hit & miss year for hdds. If they work they'll work good, if not they'll just die in the fastest time possible. Oh yeah, my dad also owns a 2tb Seagate which is probably running from 4 years rn.

Phew! You mentioned WD passport problems. Thank God I got Element!
I used to do the old mechanical Elements and tie them in to larger volumes. I just needed to install a larger drive into the wife’s laptop and at the time of purchase, the store I stopped at was COMPLETELY OUT of internal drives. I figured this would still work. Guess I’ll find out, LOL!

Same issue here, several Passports are not functioning reliably or at all.
Sometimes it can see the files, but not copy, sometimes it will ask to initialize the drive.
    Switched to Seagate.. let's see.
    Always have three copies!

Many thanks. I have a 4TB WD Elements HDD which looks very similar to this one. I use it on my iMac as a backup using Time Machine. For a while the USB lead going into the drive has been flaky and disconnects randomly. I often have to just wiggle it and it connects again. Now it's stopped completely. Although within their 2 year warranty, they want me to return it, which of course I don't want to do as it has all my personal info on it. Having watched you, I'll take mine apart and see if I can get it to work. :) Thanks again!

I have duplicates of the important stuff but still.. This drive had probably less than 50 hours of run time on it. I hate WD drives especially their portable drives because of SATA to USB3 adapter being soldered on with no option to connect ir to PC SATA if it fails ! I have had really bad luck with WD drives my personal experience is 80% failure rate for my WD drives both 3.5 and 2.5 external ! My favorite brand is Seagate sure i have had problems etc but nothing as dramatic as with WD drives i even have 11 years old Seagate Barracuda drive still working fine that beast outlived many WD drives. I am only buying Seagate (Maxtor) or other external drives with removable sata to usb3 adapter although they are pretty cheap and prone to failure also the USB3 cables for Seagate / Maxtor are pretty cheap bad quality and i had problems with those cables alone good that i had spare cables from all failed WD drives :D ! I also have 3 years old 3x Seagate Slim 2 TB external drives they are still working fine. As for SSD i had Samsung EVO 850 250 GB SSD it failed with no warning since then i dont trust SSD's disks altough i am still using some cheapo SSD's for windows and program's and they haven't had any issues yet. I still have left 1 TB WD my passport its old slim version and old 2 TB WD my passport that's one pretty thick and bulky the only 2x WD drives i hjavent had any issue.
      Seagate / Maxtor - Cons
      - Bad quality cables (Had problems with that)
      - Bad quality SATA to USB3 adapter (Had failed once for me)
      - HDD Was converted to RAW - luckly with old seagate file recovery software could restore files and reformat drive
      - As for most drives if using for long period temperature is getting high in enclousure
      Seagate / Maxtor - Pros
+ Removable SATA to USB3 adapter, can use drive in PC/Laptop/Dock other adapter
      WD Pros
+I guess security / encryption or something like that ...
      WD Cons
      - Soldered SATA to USB3 inside PCB no way to remove by yourself
      - High failure rate atleast for me
      SSD Disks
I like HDD's more because i have had experience with them and there is more ways to fix them and get your data back !

Absolute garbage... Got a WD Elements 2TB and it simply stopped working and my computer freezes every time I plug it in. I could return it, but it has (or had) all my private data, so no... Won't recommend it to anyone!!

Someone brought me one of these that has a bad USB chip. It copies data at about 200 bytes per second over ddrescue... this is going to take a few years... decades... oy!

      I don't have ps4, I can't say anything. If as internal, you won't succeed.

but still Western digital have a better data against Seagate... Seagate have way more % problems with Data lost than WD. Is weird that "My PassPort" is one of the most recomended External HDD in Amazon and as a budget option in some webpages. I have the simplier versión -not MY PassPort- of a WD external drive, and still rocking great 3 years later.

    Thanks; this was helpful.
I had a 1TB drive like this... It failed, so I returned it (RMA). They didn't have any 1TB ones anymore, so they sent me a 2TB as a replacement! Awesome, right? It's failing again... It's probably the USB port, or maybe just a flakey controller. Regardless, I'm not waiting for it to fail completely. I bought a Samsung SSD to which I'm copying everything over. Then I'm going to repurpose the 2TB HDD inside and take a hammer to this shitty enclosure. Tired of your crappy hardware, Western Digital.

That's why I never buy WD external hard drive or even a laptop with WD hard drive in it. Worst HD brand ever. Even worse than anything made in China.

This is not possible for a number of reasons. I don't have the budget to even have a few broken disks. Yes, that would be nice, but ....
