    I play from a 11handicap, so no pro. My 7iron distance is 153yards. Nothing special, but was blown away when I played with a 32handicap beginner, that couldn't hit his 5 or 6 iron, he had no hybrid or fairway wood or driver, BUT he used his 7iron to tee off and his shortest was 190yards and averaged 205yards with it. He would hit it twice on par5 and long par4 and put us all to shame.
    EDIT: he plays with a secondhand set of Titleist 716 AP1 at 31° loft on his 7iron.
    I play Mizuno at 32° loft on my 7iron

    Great video. I have a set of blades and a set of cavity backs. To your point about smash factor: when I really get hold of the cavity backs, then can fly way past any distance I was trying for. The blades, with the lower smash mean also far more control. No flying the greens

    I'm 53, but haven't played much over the last 25 years. I've been just hitting balls for the past few weeks to get my timing back. I was a 2hdcp 30 years ago, and hit my 7 around 170. Actually had my only hole in one in 1994, 174 yards with 845s 7 iron. I'm currently hitting it around 160 during my comeback.

    Good idea for a video! If you're getting older like me, it's good to keep in mind that there are options if you're hung up on a number that you're supposed hit a certain club. On another note, are your clubs college class named? 101's being more forgiving/beginner and 301's more advanced? Are you going to come out with a higher level of advanced iron? Say 401's or 501's 😃. Or maybe, although this would be the antithesis of your less expensive club mission statement, a range of totally custom 701's or 801's (think BMW levels of cars trim packages) with custom ferrule's, stampings, powder coat finishes, and other accents. I've got an idea for a black powder coat for the topline of irons to make the faces pop and reduce glare. Could even do different colors and a matt finish. But I digress. Great video!

      That is very interesting. I am in a similar set up, 9 year old AP2's with a 34° 7-iron. Since you've had them so long, can you confirm something that I've heard about aging (I'm 57) that you loose roughly 3 yards of distance each year. From what I've experienced, it's close. When I was fit for them, I was carrying the 7 about 185, nine years later, it's 162. Have you had a similar experience or are you still young enough that it hasn't changed all that much yet? Thank you for responding, if you do, if not, hopefully questions don't annoy you and I apologize. 🙏

      Hi mate, I got fitted for them in 2010, when I was 34 and a 23 handicap.
      I am now 48, and got down to a12.4 handicap and I still hit them about the same distances, mainly having increased ball speed by hitting the sweet spot more often. I think my swing speed has gone down a little, but I can’t remember my numbers from back then.
      Now I must admit I haven’t played much for 6 years in between, when my youngest was born, until she was 6. But the last two years I have been playing once a week and practicing about once a week.
      I have had a lot of issues with my back, so I do a lot of stretching, and strength workout, about 20-30mins each day, mostly for my lower back.
      However, once I see I start I’ll lose distance, I’ll go back to my previous irons which I still have somewhere, Adam’s Golf GT2 undercut with a True Temper Regular shaft.
      And after that to my dad’s old Big Bertha irons with Fujikura’s light shaft. I think a softer more flexible shaft and perhaps a bigger clubface might help with distance, though perhaps less accurate?
      My real problem is that the last two rounds I haven topping my woods & rescues from the deck 😂 But it’s always something with this game, right? 😉

    The difference is in the clubhead. Not the loft. A hollow body iron will flex more just like a hybrid to generate more speed and more efficiency. Also how pure you are hitting center. I don’t like the hollow body irons because you often get those flyers that go over the green. I had p770’s and was not happy with the longer distance. I went back to mb’s and bought hogan icons. I like my 7 iron going 160 to 165. Nothing more, nothing way less. Even a bad shot it goes 150 ish range. But never to long.

  • @malcr99
    @malcr99 3 месяца назад

    Another interesting experiment Tim. My 7 iron carries right around 135 with a loft of 30.5 degrees, no idea on my swing speed with it. Back in the day was around 150-155 (would have been more loft on a 7 back then) 😐

    My 6i is 32 deg which is my 150 yd club.
    The thought of having an 18 yd run out like you have on the 101 would terrify me.
    So i think my clubs would have to be either of the middle two 👍

  • @blakesanchez3782

    Can you do a similar test with the PW? Doesn't have to be slower swing speed for a specific distance, I am just trying to get an idea of what to expect out of the PW vs my current irons. I just ordered a customized set of 101Ts which I am confident was the right choice for my game. But I keep seeing reviews with much longer distances than I currently hit my 7 iron, 5 iron, etc. I have older, Vokey wedges that I still love and am not replacing yet, but I am concerned that I may end up with a big gap between my new 101T PW and my current 52deg wedge.

    • @blakesanchez3782
      @blakesanchez3782 2 дня назад +1

      I found you hitting PW in another video and got some insight to it. Maybe it would be helpful to see both ends of the set at various speeds? Dare I say 5 mph increments? I swing my PW about 5mph slower than it looks like you do (90mph for me). But one of my biggest hesitations in considering the Takomo irons was how it fits into my existing bag being I was only replacing 4-PW and all of the models seem to be longer and more forgiving than my existing, 20 yr old irons...

      I would say neither of those, unless you are looking to get new clubs. Swinging all out just creates more error. If you can hit a ball at least 150+ with any club, then you would probably be better off trying to manage course tactics and setting up your shots back from the green.

      150 carry is pretty short for a 7i carry these days. Less speed=less spin. It's simple as that. 170 carry would be in the 6s in the 301s I'd imagine.

    Spin seems so crazy low and decent angle looks too flat at this swing speed. Shows most people should play a ball that spins a lot more on full shots than they probably do unless they have high speed.
