Rugged and inexpensive: M200 revolver in .38 Special, from Rock Island Armory

  • It's been a literally crazy summer, and millions of Americans have become gun owners for the first time. A lot of bargain weapons have become difficult to find as a result, but the Rock Island Armory M200 revolver still seems to be available for reasonable prices. It's not a glamour gun in anyone's book, but it doesn't have to be. As shown in the video you can get dependable accuracy and functionality from this 4" weapon using the tried-and-true .38 Special cartridge, which served police departments for decades.
If you want to deep-dive into the nitty-gritty of the .38 Special, please check out veteran Paul Harrell's excellent videos on the topic:
    • .38 Special Standard P...
Otherwise, for the modest price, I've found the M200 to be a nice little knock-about revolver equally at home on my night stand, or in my tackle box when I go visit the reservoirs (to catch some smallmouths or trout.)

M200 was the standard issue to some of our police officers during the late '80s. Now it's being used by most security officers here in the Philippines. You can't go wrong with the M200. Reliable and budget friendly, what more can you ask for? Thanks for the video.

i am one of those folks you mentioned that recently purchased a M200. i long had owned a Ruger Blackhawk and never felt much need to daily carry. i have had mine for nearly a year and have grown to love it! Its very first shot fired was a bulls-eye at 10 yards. i said i think we got a keeper here! i did as you suggest and watched Paul Harrell for tips on shooting the .38 double action pistol and hit that ejection rod but still peak a little on the reload. Slow is steady. Steady is fast.

@@jeffcolwell8459 I just picked up a Model 206. A friend of mine bought it new at our local Academy last fall. It's the bobbed hammer model. This model seems to be selling about $30 higher than the model 200. He paid $299 after tax. Him and his wife only fired 12 rounds through it. She had trouble with the double action only trigger and he didn't care for it being double action only either. I traded them a brand new in the box Maverick Mossberg 88 12 guag pump for it. I bought 2 of the 88's last fall, and have several other shotguns. They decided to go with a shotgun and he used the Mossberg when he was an MP in the Army. The 206 came with 2 sets of grips and a nice padded case. I really like 38's, they are much favorite carry gun. We met at a friend's house out in the country and test fired each other's guns. He loved the 88 and I loved the 206. I threw in a box of shells and 2 extra chokes I had bought for it. We both walked away very happy with the trade. He is much more accurate with the shotgun and his wife likes it better too. I've shot handguns- autos and revolvers- for many years. The trigger on the 206, and my 200, are long, but slick. I honestly believe they are slicker than my S&W 642. I fired 6 rounds of 158gr LRN from the RIA Snubbie and shot a very decent group into the bullseye. I brought it home and gave it a good cleaning. He had the large plastic black grips on it. But I settled on the small wooden ones. The large grips do feel better. But the small wooden ones are much better for pocket carry. And I like the classic wood and black steel look. It's riding in a Sticky pocket holster in my front pants pocket. I carried it with me today when I run my errands. It's very comfortable. And it holds one more round than my J frame Smith. I plan on carrying the 206 this way from now on. And I can still carry my 642 on my hip in it's Galco Concealable leather holster. The best reload for a 38 snub is another 38 snub. RIA's are rough around the edges. But I do like them. My M200 was out of time when I bought it. But RIA emailed me a prepaid shipping label in less than 2 hours after I called them and explained my issue. I had the gun back in 3 weeks. All shipping and repairs were free. The action is slick a butter now. I've dealt with almost every gun company over the years. RIA was very helpful and quickly repaired my revolver. Luckily, I don't see any issues with my 206. It is a shame they seem to let so many guns out of the factory needing repairs. Oh, I did notice the barrel is not centered onto the frame. The front sight tilts to the right, just alittle. But it hits dead on and it's not an issue too me. I do wish they would pay better attention to detail. But, I have less $ in both my RIA"s than I do my Smith 642. As long as their revolvers are reliable, and have good customer service, I can live with the imperfections. They are rough beast that are cost effective.

@@istartedajoke1704 In glad the revolver did you good. And that's really cool you helped to arm your sister. A 38 revolver is the perfect gun for her, and for most people honestly. Anytime I loan a gun to family or friends, it's usually a revolver - a 38 or a 22. They are just much simpler, take less maintenance, and more safe- especially for those who are not really into guns. My Mom, almost 80 now, has an ole H&R 9 shot 22lr revolver I loaned her 30 years ago. Mom is a good shot and just likes 22's. I tried to swap her a nice old S&W 38 revolver for it several years back. But after 2 shots of 38, she wanted her 22 back ! Lol. But the 22 makes a great house/car gun for her. I keep it cleaned, oiled and loaded for her since Dad passed a couple of years ago. I know she will use it, need be. When I was 7, She shot a 22 round dead center in our backdoor, with a then new 22 lever action rifle Dad had just bought for me (my first gun). Dad was working late one night and someone tried to break in to our house. First, through my bedroom window, then our backdoor. With me at here side, and rifle in hand, Mom warned the guy to leave, or she would shoot. He didn't listen - and she honored her words! LOL. We never knew who it was- or if he was hit or not. But he never came back. So Mom likes her 22's. It sounds like you had the Federal American Eagle bullets. Those are really good bullets and what I have in my Model 200 right now. Anyway, didn't aim to rant. It was good talking with you.
