Pitman arm is not located properly. Pull pitman arm, straighten steering wheel, reinstall pitman. With steering wheel straight, straighten front wheels as best you can with tie rod adjustment. Should be good enough to drive to firestone

I was a ford tech for 10 years. Remove pitman. Turn steering full lock right. Count the turns to full left. Split the difference and you are at center. So if it’s 5 turns from left to right then turn the wheel 2.5 turns and reinstall the pitman. If the steering wheel is not centered you can reset that with disconnecting the intermediate shaft and re centering from inside. Then adjust the tie rods. Awesome you already have the a arm eccentrics for more adjustment.

One of best instuctional videos I have seen from you. You went step-by-step and showed us what we needed to see for a major suspension replacement. A great day's work! I think it will drive much better than it did. Once the allignment is done, it should be picture perfect. Thank you for your effort in bringing us great content.

I am guessing this will be too late Randy but as an ex Scania Master Tech. I would never assume anything if I were you as you don't know the car's history. Back to (longwinded) Basics:
    * Disconnect the Tie Rods from the hubs and the new 'Drop Arm' (you call it a Pitman Arm) you fitted to the Steering Box. 'Centre' the steering box by spinning the steering wheel left to right and fully back and rewinding half way. In power steering this is important as you get 'pull' if the car is dead a head and the Steering Box is not.
    * Restore the Tie Rods to equal length each side.
    * Refit the Drop Arm ensuring it is also 'Dead Ahead (check it and the Idler Arm on the other side with the chassis they should all be parallel)
    * If the steering wheel is still not 'dead ahead' while being very careful about the steering wheel air bag (let it all electrically discharge for at least an hour) remove the steering wheel and remount it in the dead ahead position
    * Pop the LH side Tie Rod back into place without its nut while making sure you don't alter the steering box position. Check how it looks
    * Pop the RH side in the same way. Check how it looks.
    * Check if the steering wheel has moved
    * Any major difference between each side will indicate an issue with the suspension or chassis. It doesn't matter at this point if it toe's out or in as long as each side is the same.
Sorry but i did try to shorten it...... Good luck and thanks for sharing your efforts.

*Randy, I really think that you have proved that you're successful in the local flipping car business.* So why aren't you moving to a location with space for at least one truck inside? Where you can work on it no matter how cold or how hard it rains. I think that if you got a new decent workplace, with a property where you can park some cars. That you can work way more efficient. With heat, electricity and maybe a lift? I don't know what the costs of renting some place like this are in Oklahoma but just look for it. It's worth it man!

Pitman arm is installed in wrong position, as someone else said you need to pull it off and straight the steering wheel and then realign. Personally I would pull the steering gear box and bolt it down to secure it to something so I could use a torque wrench and properly torque the pitman arm down. I know they take around 200ft lbs, and I believe the pitman arms can be adjusted in 45° increments

Randy, Its not easy doing that work in bad weather and being sick on top of it make it all that more miserable, Ive been there, done it, got the stitches!!! i can relate and totally understand how you feel!, and you are doing great on it despite all the roadblocks you are being challenged with... i hope you are feeling better!!!!!! If you look at the sector shaft spline on the steering gear there are only 4 possible ways to position the pitman arm. to make it simple there are 4 notches on the spline that will not allow the arm to be put on other than a 12, 3, 6, or 9 o clock positions in relation to the sector shaft. Factor in the sector shaft nut holding the pitman arm on being loose and the relative ease of being able to remove the pitman arm from the sector shaft, someone did pull it to try and re-position it. If it was re-positioned 90 degrees out the steering would be severely limited on one side due to the steering gear reaching to its end of travel before it would turn the wheel all the way to lock so that idea was abandoned and the nut was not tightened all the way. What i suspect is going on is the frame is bent from the accident changing the position of the A-arms causing the camber and toe geometry to be off of correct alignment. Im placing my bet on a bent frame!!!! but lets see what Firestone says??!!!

Disconnect pitman from steering box..... turn steering wheel from left stop all the way to right stop.. count how many turns and divide by two. The steering wheel should be positioned exactly as it came from the factory... reposition the wheels so they are both pointing straight ahead and parallel with each other (this means making adjustments with the adjustment tubes)... reconnect pitman to the steering box.

Randy really like watching your videos and my attention span is longer than 10 minutes so please continue making your videos the way you are. If you like, you could do some "time lapse" sections of your videos like Samcrac does using a tripod, those are great, enjoy watching all the work being done.
Part one of this video had several comments about getting a shop, I enjoy the fact that you do your work in the driveway or garage, as I do. I would understand if you did get a better place to work, but you may start to lose viewers if you went too far. I subscribe to and watch you, Samcrac, Chris Fix, Tavarish, Legit Street Cars (he does have a hoist in his garage) and a few others as my "core" auto repair videos. I used to like watching Tavarish a lot, but have recently started to lose interest in his videos, simply because he has started to work on too high end of cars that I cannot relate to (as in financially, I cannot afford a Lambo or Ferrari, no disrespect intended). Samcrac does high end cars but also does affordable cars including his 4K Porsche and Legit will often show several ways to do a repair using basic tools to specialty tools on his "cheaper" Mercs.
Please keep saying "Ladies and Gentlemen", many years ago I learned to say "Mam and Sir" while attending University in Texas and eventually working several years in the southern US (I am Canadian). Its nice to see respectful youtubers as opposed to some of the young guys on you tube that have none stop cussing (my 9 year old can be within ear shot and I don't have to worry. And yes I want my daughter to grow up respectful without any extra cussing influence).
Sorry about the length of this, usually never comment on-line, maybe my 5th time making a comment, now you see why!! Thanks

CENTER the steering wheel FIRST, then adjust the tie rods to zero toe on the tires.
Spin the wheel all the way left, put some masking tape at 12 o'clock on the steering wheel, spin it all the way right, counting the turns. Then spin it back half that amount. If the wheel is splined, it may not still be straight, as someone may have just pulled it off in the past and "straightened" it. If so, pull the wheel and put it on straight. Do the full spin left, spin right while counting, spin back half again to make sure it is now straight up.
You want the wheel straight up when it is truly halfway between full left and full right, so that, as you noted, the turn signals are happy.
Once the wheel is truly straight, futz with the tie rods to get the wheels straight-ish. It doesn't have to be perfect since you're taking it to a shop, but if you put a straightedge on each wheel, you can get it damned close. Better toed in a touch than toed out, so it isn't so squirrely on the way to the alignment shop.
I had an alignment shop that "straightened my wheel AFTER they aligned the car, by just pulling the wheel and putting it on "straight". I should have made them fire that lazy tech. Damned thing was a full half turn off left to right.
If you replace the steering box, you'll have to repeat the whole thing, but it doesn't take that long.

Turn your steering wheel from lock to lock, that's all the way from one direction to the other, keeping track of how many times it turns.
Then turn it enough times to be half way back. Remove the keys to lock it into position.
If the wheel is only a little bit off, turn it to be as straight as you can, and lock it again.
Determine which front wheel is the straightest.
Using the adjustment in the tie rod and set it as straight as you can.
Then, using a builder's square, find a common spot on the tread, make a corresponding mark on the driveway in front, and behind the tire.
Measure equally and mark the driveway by the other front tire.
Using the square, see if the marks come close to hitting matching marks on the front and rear of the second tire.
Adjust the tie rod to come as close as you can.
This will make your tires fairly parallel, and relatively straight with the steering wheel! It should be good enough to drive to the alignment shop.
You should hit a junk yard for a new steering box. You will feel a lot better.
A bad steering box will generally let you know if it is going bad with vibration, noise and feel.
You should check the torque specs on those front wheel bearings. It did not look like you were near high enough.
I have changed a lot of them when I used to build race cars to run SCCA motorsports, and work on a lot of front wheel drive.
Nothing kills the bearings quicker than the wrong torque! May not on a big truck, but when you had it apart, it would have only added about an hour to the job!
You are doing good work by showing non experienced folks what is involved in this type of work.
Being from North East Ohio, if something is more than a few years old, there isn't much left to fix. Just rust!
    Rick

This is a really good set of videos.
Watching you deal with the tie rods reminds me of when I was driving my '60 Pontiac daily and the tie rod ends in it went. I was lazy and just took the whole tie rod off the parts car and swapped it out. The alignment was fine.
A lot of guys are saying the steering wheel could be on wrong but I doubt it. I haven't messed with a Ford but every GM I pull they've keyed it so it only fits in one position. Or, the lock plate under is keyed and the horn contact will only fit in the correct position. I did so many of the 80s type GM columns, changing the lock cylinder, I used to be able to do one in about half an hour if it didn't fight me too much. It's easier to change the whole column than to tear one apart to fix a loose tilt wheel.

Randy I agree with the thread. The pitman arm is off. This is how you set the front end up for adjustment. Some pitman arms have indexing marks kind of like a punch mark to help you line them up. If not then take to pitman arm back loose and straighten the steering wheel first. (This is where having a 2nd person helps) While you keep the steering wheel straight then try to install the arm straight. A tooth off wont matter a great deal but do try to get it straight. With that done, you can adjust the wheels straight. As for the Camber - with the wheels straight using a tape measure and measure to both sides of the spindle to the frame. Again this isn't perfect but it will get you close.

Make sure you caution any one working around air bags to disconnect the battery and turn the lights on to kill any redisual charge. And give it a few minutes for the controllers to depleat.
There are different manufacturers, and I am not sure which ones need what procedure!
You do not want one of those going off in your face when you pull the steering wheel to reposition it!
To check to see if the wheels are straight, you can put a long board against the front and back tires to get a visual cue. If you don't have one, use some string, an extention cord, air hose. Anything straight, and long enough.

Steering and suspension work are always a tough job, but, with the right tools the job goes much smoother. One question, did you have the steering wheel straight when you installed the pitman arm? Also, the tie rod and adjuster sleeves will need to be adjusted to compensate for the new ball joints and control arms. I'm glad you did the work yourself, instead of just taking it to the alignment shop. I was surprised that you didn't torque the axle shaft to wheel bearing nuts? But , I did enjoy the video. Cold weather and suspension work outside tappes anybody's energy level,. Great work, and , I'll keep watching! Thanks for sharing this video.

  • @intervenum247
    @intervenum247 4 года назад

straighten out the steering wheel and than eye ball it using both the L/R tie rod sleeves. The alignment guy will do a 5 (yes-5) wheel alignment using the rear wheels as base line.. than straighten out steering wheel 'n locking it with the "seat-bar tool" to hold it in position and than set camber/caster - toe in/out.
Hence a "five" wheel alignment. BTW the pitman arm to steering shaft has a master spline.. ya can only install it one way

If you ever need to take off a hitch lock again, drill out the key opening, I've taken a few off like that by just drilling it out.

Sure hope you torqued the axle nuts down and not used the impact. Should be 225lbs. Been 2 years ago. If not I'm sure the wheels and hubs have fallen off by now. And agree Pitman arm isn't properly positioned on spline out of gear box. But you know that also by now. Good effort though. I'm about ready to do ball joints, pitman, idler and hub/bearings on same truck. Mine is about to turnover 300K miles. This will be second set of ball joints. Thanks for the videos. About to watch part 3.

Your flogging a dead horse trying to align it while the tyres ain’t on the ground when you lower the car back to the floor the tie rods will straighten out and push the wheels further apart apart that’s why alignment is done with the tyres on the ground on the rotating pads good good on the parts install though keep at it

I’m wondering if something else is bent. Like the control arm mounts. Not that I think this would throw the steering wheel out of wack. If my memory serves me the steering wheel was upside down when you got it right? If I were doing this I’d unhook the steering shaft or pull the steering wheel not sure if it’s keyed to certain degrees or not like can you put it on plus minus 90 degrees? Once the rack is at the middle position I think both tie rods should be set at the equal length then adjust from there.

Get it aligned, see how it does lock to lock and if good pull the steering wheel or it could be the rag joint on the steering shaft if it has one that was installed wrong.

Need to be sure the steering wheel is tighter down when the wheels are straight. Then when resetting the pitman arm it is easier. But note there still can be challenges, so let Firestone complete the Alignment.

Had the pitman arm replaced on my tahoe with one from oriellys. that took care of most of the large amount of play in the wheel. however, my steering wheel is cockeyed to about the 2 o'clock position. i suspected whichever shop guy did the pitman didnt center the steering wheel before securing the pitman, so i asked the mechanic about it, and he told me the cheap china BS Part did not line up right. there is apparently only one way it fits on with grooves or notches, and thats how my part fit. i should mention, tahoe drives straight as an arrow, just has a cockeyed steering wheel.

Your sure the lower control arms are ok ? Its a tie rod-pitman arm issue. I would have maked the new and old pitman arm and box shaft but that only works if it's in the right spot to begin with. Good work really

Was the steering wheel straight when you started putting the suspension back together? I think they loan a tool that will help keep the steering wheel straight while you work on it. At work we have something a little fancier but its all the same thing.

Probably already been offered, but even though you used the old components to set up the new, the old were likely bent. Adjustment sleeves aren't nearly as strong as the tie rods, they bend in collisions.
