  • Tony shows you how to use flash (or a strobe or a monolight) outdoors in full sun. You can either balance the sunlight as fill flash (to create a nice catchlight in the eyes) or you can completely overpower the sun and make the background completely black.
Here's the strobe Tony is using: sdp.io/ad600

I have a feeling she wouldn't squint from the sun

When the first picture was shown, I was freaked out and yelled "what is wrong with that model!" Took me a moment to realize it was a mannequin.

I love your stuff, but one thing I've noticed you do, that I don't understand. This is a great topic and you are talking about background exposure, but then your 'example' shot is a tight CU of the model. Why? Why aren't you showing more of the very background you are discussing? You even said, "We don't care about the exposure of the model right now", but your cutaway is of the model. I understand the topic very well, but curious about the video presentation portion of this. Thanks for all you do.

Finally....a model who isn't a fidgeting mess and knows her left from her right. What needs to be mentioned here.....Tony's gross overall #'s only work because the strobe he's using has the ability to hyper-sync, exceeding the typical max for flash sync/ 1/250th./sec. IF you don't have a light source that could do that you'll be playing some other cards, including ND filters, etc.

    Chelsea was silent today

Correct me if I am wrong, but ... using ND filters, is MUCH MUCH more efficient than using HSS!! Using HSS, as the flash pulses for each portion of the exposed section, the other sections that are covered are not benefiting from the flash.

How do you get your models to stay that still?

Hi Guys, I am a little confused.... I know that if I change shutter speed it will affect Ambient ie: High Shutter/Dark background. At 3.58 Tony has raised shutter to 8000 and quite rightly the background went black. However, why did he still have to adjust flash to full output in order to light model? I thought shutter never affected flash output? I am obviously missing something ? Thanks for any help?

Even though this tutorial was focused on using flash in the sun, this was the best tutorial I've seen that explained how to use flash, in general. Great job!

It is actually pretty amazing how dark and light you could make things with just the camera settings and one light source (not including the sun of course). Thanks for making this! As an amateur I hadn't thought of this.

Wow.... These guys are just simply amazing! So well done, so professional and so down to earth all at the same time! I mentioned Tony not looking at the camera during their video blogs... he does NOT have this issue when it is just him! Thank you for such great videos!!
