    To put it simply:
    1. Expose the scene properly first with the shuttlespeed.
    2. Adjust the flash power to get the right exposure on the subject.

    However, you can only use shorter shutter speeds than the regular standard flash sync speed of the camera (1/200 or 1/250 as a maximum) if both (!), i.e. the camera and the system flash, enable the so-called "High Speed Sync (HSS)", otherwise this doesn't work. That could well have been mentioned in this video because it's an important aspect here.

    When you increased the shutter speed to 1/1600, wouldn't you be in HSS?

    • @d.williams2568
      @d.williams2568 Год назад +2

      Yes, he really missed the point of noting that at that shutter speed you need both a flash and a camera capable of HSS, and both set to that function...
      Also he really could have made the simple point that there are TWO simple exposures going on to match for a pleasing single exposure: Ambient exposure-influenced by shutter speed and ISO (yes also F/Stop is there but less so...), and Flash exposure-influenced by aperture(F/stop), ISO, and flash power/distance...
      Makes it easier to balance the exposures when you understand the see-saw of these on the shot...just saying...

    • @tharso_mncube
      @tharso_mncube Год назад

      I was about to ask the same question… So now my question is, how do you go about this with a camera that isn’t capable of HSS?

    • @jaym5938
      @jaym5938 Год назад +1

      @@tharso_mncube If you have to increase your shutter past Max Sync, try using an ND filter. A variable is convenient but a single f-stop ND filter will likely be better.

      Shoot raw and adjust the temperature in post or use gels. There's a great video on Adorama channel with David Bergman about the subject.

      @lensman5762 Год назад

      @@veeaa If you read my post, you'd notice I wrote that nowadays I shoot mostly with 4X5 cameras, these use film BTW . As for shooting raw, I have been shooting RAW if and when I used a digital camera since early 2001. I have used Lightroom from Version 1, and prior to that Apple Aperture, and even The RAW Shooter that Adobe acquired, and used their RAW processing engine in their Camera Raw. MY point was to arrive at a workflow where conistency in skin tone could be achieved without time consuming post processing. Easier said than done.

    How to set flash with 200mm f2.8 lens?

  • @xoxjoms
    @xoxjoms Год назад

    How did you do that? 1/1600 shutter on camera flash? is that possible? I thought you can use only the HSS if you have remote trigger. Please enlighten me.
    I have a flash with HSS but i can't use the HSS without the remote trigger.

    @ 4:39 you fired manual flash full power at 1/1600, but when the flash is mounted on the camera the speed does not exceed the sync speed of camera ( may be 1/250? or 1/200 depends on the camera) how did this happen?

    • @BeyondPhotography
      @BeyondPhotography  Год назад +1

      Hi, thanks for writing to us. Appreciate ur view. Oh, You can exceed sync speed in Nikon by turning on “Auto Fp” mode in Nikon or turn on “Hi-Speed” mode in curtain settings in Canon.

    At around 8:17, how did you get the flash to not reflect off the glass behind the model? I would think even pointing the flash up would still produce some light on the glass.

      @Jin sadly, not all cameras have that capability so it requires HSS at reduced power which also means some other adjustments to compensate for light falloff. 😕
