"Give you a couple how do you dos" I love Mike's personality. I've only listened to maybe 3 Dream Theatre songs in my life, but I've watched dozens of videos of the band members and they're all just such great guys.
I fell in love with Mike when I first saw him in DT drummer audition. From that time on I can't get enough of watching his interviews. Such a nice guy, a real gentleman, very friendly and first class professional!!! Forgot to mention that I actually listened maybe one DT song in my life)) And Mike had better haircut before DT IMHO
just surfin you tube and came across this video. have no idea who he is but he seems like a genuine person and mad coool. happy and positive is a great way to go through life
Super happy I saw this video. Just saw Dream Theatre in Orlando a 2 days ago. ( What a show!!) Mike’s performance was a huge waaaaooowwww. I was unable to tell if he is a left or a right handed drummer and finally I get a clarification on his kit. Keep rockin’
I love that we drummers constantly steal shit from each other and we are actually happy about it lol I am sure Steve feels honored to have his licks stolen from him by Mike and vice versa :) Amazing drums set for an AMAZING drummer!
His snare has sounded terrible on all the DT records he has been on. I've seen him talk about his preferred snare sound many times and it isn't even close to all the sounds they come up with for the records. Makes me wonder if Portnoy always produced because people wanted him to tune his drums like shit haha
danlc95 The drum sound itself was good on ADToE, but the way it was mixed and mastered was garbage. It sounds like a demo at times and the drums are mixed lower on that album than any other DT album to the point that the snare drum, the most important part of any drum set, can barely be heard at times. I’m still waiting for MM to get a good drum sound on a DT studio effort (his drums sounded fantastic on the BtFW live album/dvd) because an incredible drummer like Mangini deserves to be heard in all of his glory.
it's nice to know that he switched from the Reference kit to a Masterworks kit. I think the Masterworks is Pearl's best sounding kit, and probably one of the best sounding drum kits out there. Definitely one of my top 3 faves.
I'm using a real matching courp fiberskin white Remo snare drum Head on my regular main snare and it brings me back to the marching band style of playing in the football field and it doesn't need much micng period
I want a Mangini style kit It would be setup different to fit more toms by haveing the toms more outward Goring in the same ambidextrous setup 6 8 10 12 13 14 15 16 18 20 22 Inch toms And 24 inch kicks No rocket toms The whole idea is to be able to play toms melodically like tenor drums It’s a prototype I am making with litteraly every drum I own
It's hard not to like Mangini. About signaling for monitor adjustment, it's kinda simple for that vocally or hand signals. I used to work as soundman for a live band club. I would tell the musicians just point your finger at any one then point up or down = he wanted the guy volume up or down in his monitor mix. Near proximity just vocally say thing like: guitar UP, Key Down, bass UP, vocal UP (or down) Whatever he wants. Of course UP or DOWN doesn't mean jump the volume several notches and blow the eardrums LOL
The idea was to stop drum sounds from bleeding into vocal mic, but it could backfire as it could make the same drum sound wave bounces back to the mic again at high volume. I hate it
because 'octobans' is a Tama trademark name I think..every other company that makes those style of drums has to call them something else...ie rocket toms by Pearl...Ludwig makes them and calls them something other than octobans etc...
@@dericanslum1696 Um..literally according to mike in the video. Did you even listen ? He even said it HURTS SOMETIMES to play it. His choices sometimes make me shake my head.

my most fav. drummer of all time...Amazing drummer!
He's the Allen Vizzutti of drums!
Mike seems like a really cool down to earth dude who's EXTREMELY brilliant at what he does....so good
I love Mike, he is like one of those quirky grade school music teachers.
Eric is an unsung hero. Nice shout out to Steve Smith.. Mangini is an amazing musician and a pretty cool guy from what I've seen. Can't get enough..

"Snare drum has a lot of CRACK. I like snare drums with CRACK."
I guess this is where he gets all that energy to hit so hard and fast.
You should ask him for a dollar now xD

Thanks for posting! Mangini is the best.
Wonderful drummer, My favourite.

A very humble and passionate human.
Nice! I also use that groove from "Backtalk" by Journey to hear what my kit is sounding like.
HA! I knew that Steve Smith lick as soon as he played it. Memory still sharp! :-P

Amazing drums set for an AMAZING drummer!
Just realized when he talks about the monitor system. Eric says the pack has been around a long time. That means Portnoy used it.
He seems like a really nice guy ( and of course a world class batterista ).
Mike's in a premier band but I get the idea he'd be just as enthusiastic playing dive bars for 50 people. He just loves to play.
Funny how the snare drum sound he mentioned here, that he loved, was almost nonexistent in the self-titled album. So who's decision was that?
His snare has sounded terrible on all the DT records he has been on. I've seen him talk about his preferred snare sound many times and it isn't even close to all the sounds they come up with for the records.
Makes me wonder if Portnoy always produced because people wanted him to tune his drums like shit haha
I guess JP controls all the production now, so Mangini gets the short end of the stick all the time.
He is NOT responsible for the sound editing. Blame JP and Chycki for the shit snare.
Jim Pauls Loved the sounds on ADOTE.

that "face signal"...
Saw these guys a month ago. Incredible show. Mangini was awesome. Don’t think they miss Portnoy, with possible exception of his vocals.

Eric Disrude was drum tech of Mike Portnoy in DT era?
Was Eric Disrude the drum tech for Portnoy back in the Albino Monster?
i dont remember when he took over for jose, but yes, he was portnoys drum tech for a while too
Mike is using Earthworks Mics now?!
it is , what , i use REMO since 30 years!

How to tune the sound
Glad to see that Dream Theatre finally got a drummer.

Welcome to the aprdectress world. Mr Mike
why no focus on the camera??
Way better than any of Portnoy's setups.
It's irrelevant about one's taste for setup, I think you're being bias here...welll
Really? Because Portnoy's set up looks pretty relatable and this guy's set up is such a circus he had to specifically devote time to learning it.
Is he a drum tech or a butler?
👍👍👍
This is the kit he wants---the 2020 tour kit is tiny

2 hours to set up that kit.....mimumun wage about 10-11 bucks so 20 bucks to set that up 💀
You got to put it down too... so 2 more hours of intense packing! You got 40bucks right there!
Armando Osorio ...you really think this guy is making minimum wage...?...
You don't pay people minimum wage to handle 30 grand worth of equipment. That's just begging for trouble.
Seems like a nice guy but being a DT fan from the day, and a drummer, Portnoy will always be the man.
um lego para adultos
