Lincoln Town Car Guy Tries to Recharge the AC in his 2006 Signature Limited with 106K

- I've been talking about my AC getting a little weaker so I decided to do something about it. Getting that "premium" AC recharge canister from Walmart, this is my attempt to add a bit of coolant and keep it colder. At first I didn't notice any difference, but after driving it in 95F, it's noticeably cooler now so job well done on a budget.

You gave me the courage and confidence to DIY recharge my Town Car! You also identified the Air Bag/Seat Pretensioner issue for me too, thanks for the contribution!!
Glad to assist! :) I'll do it again this year
As regards to your headlights fogging. Drill two or three 1/4 in to 1/2 in holes in the bottom of the headlight housings to allow air to get in and moisture or water to get out. They will stay clearer longer if you were to do that. I did that to my '99 Dodge Dakota and the headlights stayed cleared for years.
If your losing freon in your A/C system. Check your receiver dyer (round canister looking thing near the condenser) for leaks in the bottom. They like to rust out on the bottoms because of the plastic case that goes around it. On that particular recharge can, you should be able to adjust the gauge to the outside temperature. The pressure inside your A/C system changes with the outside temperature. You don't want to overcharge your A/C system. From what I can tell, the gauge stayed in the green which is good. 👍🏼
Thanks for the comment! I think I got the headlight fixed (another video on that). I'll try drilling if the problem comes back. AC is better now so it must have done something 😁
@@VitaliyKofman thats good! We have to stay cool and comfortable in our Town Cars! 😉
@@VitaliyKofmanI had the water in the headlight problem too due to the outer gasket wearing out. I took out the headlight assembly, drilled 3 holes thru the bottom, no more moisture👍
On the passenger side frame there's a accumulator right there that rots out on these cars if you look at my video on the AC you can see how I modified everything and put a new one in to make sure that doesn't happen again
It all comes back to you huh
Thanks a lot! I'll check it out. Adding that coolant did help with cooler air.
Your right I already changed mine accumulator rusted out. No more A.C. problems.
Good job, I love DIY videos so I can learn more about maintaining my TC.
Awesome! Thank you!
I had the same experience. Didn’t really work and did not show its empty. And soon after it blew warm air. Went to a shop and had it serviced and filled. It’s fine now.
I've been driving for about 2 weeks now after the fix and it did help with colder air and quicker colder air also. For how long - now that is the question :)
First of all, start your car, turn the air conditioner on high and put a air conditioner thermometer into your vent. You need to make sure you turn the compressor on that’s the button that circulates the air in your car then they can needs to be shaken. After hooking it up, you need to keep it upright and you need to move it from left to right left or right sideways upright sideways upright the whole time you’re pumping it in. You also have to make sure if you have a new can you are using the new style charging hose. This hose allows you to take it off the Can when you’re finished without it leaking out, the old one did not. If you have the old style charger hose, you can get a cheap adapter that screws onto the can and then you can use the old piece. It’s only like three dollars at Walmart. It’s like a blue cap with a little knob on the top. I actually used to use warm water and a rag to keep the canned from freezing but you just need to move that can from vertical to sideways vertical sideways slowly as it’s charging and if you read the Cannes, I think you’re only supposed to press the button for a couple seconds at a time. I’m a 64 year old woman if I can do it, you should be able to do it too!
Aren’t you supposed to turn the can upside down when you release the refrigerant? On my old Toyota the can said to do that.
Instructions just said to shake it well before dispensing,
Yes
12 o’clock to 3 o’clock continuously
I had the same problem with an aftermarket set of lights I got, I got silicone and resealed all around where the clear plastic meets the housing, also make sure the covers behind the housing are screwed on tight but don't over do it cause you'll strip the plastic housing.
Thanks! I will have a follow up video where I seal them also and it seems to be holding.
That’s a nice Lincoln!
Thanks!
I literally just bought another 2006 Lincoln Town Car Executive and the AC needs recharging on it. I wonder if I have time for today…
Give it a shot. It did help in my case.
Mines a 2004 and it's that time of year again!
Selling those do it yourself kits are ok for topping off , but you can overcharge them , not really understanding what is going on . The can gets cold because as the refrigerant changes state from a liquid to a gas it cools off . You can warm the can up in some warm water to get remaining refrigerant out . As the can cools , pressure drops until it equals the suction pressure in the suction line and refrigerant stops flowing . In the old systems , they had a liquid sight glass that was a real help and when the bubbles stopped and glass was clear , you knew it was full . There is a reason A/C guys exist and stumbling around not quite knowing what is going on can cause problems such as admitting non - condensibles into system or overcharging and blowing a hose . Also , there has to be a leak for the refrigerant to escape . If it lasts a couple years , maybe can get by , less than that , need to find it with dye , or soap bubbles or a electronic leak detector . Holding the can upside down keeps the can from getting cold but you can shatter a valve admitting liquid like that but if your careful and do a little bit will be ok . I am a retired HVAC guy , started in 1960 . Just some words to the wise .
Thanks for the comment. It's been nice and cold for almost a year at this point.
I topped mine off last year and is ok so far , so have my fingers crossed 🤞
These cars are known to have A/C problems, that is refrigeration fluid leaks in the evaporator.
I just ordered a new accumulator for my Town Car, it’s obviously leaking green fluid and has rusted out.
I just saw your video. Looks like it's a very minimal thing on a very well taken care of car.

I'll eventually do a video of car brochures, after getting back to Texas Sat (yesterday) I ended up turning around to fly back to Minnesota to help more with our school bus company. Great video btw.
Thank you! Looking forward to watching those videos!
On your left front headlight you didn't put the rubber tube on the side to release condensation. Or when you installed the new headlights you crimped that rubber tube blocking the headlights ability to release the moisture out of there. Hope this helps.
I didn't do anything, but put new lights in and they served me well for a year. Since this budget repair, they've been. Fine so hope to get another year out of them.
@@VitaliyKofman you mean put new bulbs in the old headlight assembly?
Well when you put the headlight assembly back in the car. You either crimped the little drain tube on the side of the fixture. Or you didn't reinstall it correctly which is a common problem. It falls off and most people don't even see it.
When I first swapped out the housing, I reinstalled the headlight bulbs from the old housing, but the new ones already had all other bulbs pre-installed. These new housings worked well for a year without any leaks so that was a new development. Since I fixed them with that gasket makers, no complaints for now.
@@VitaliyKofman bro it's not a leak that's what I'm trying to tell you. On the housing there is a little black rubber elbow vent hose. That rubber vent hose can't be blocked or kinked. Or the headlight won't be able to breathe. The headlights create heat and that heat creates condensation. The moisture inside the lens is from condensation from heating up and cooling down. That's not from a leak that's from not being properly vented. You either didn't put the vent tube back on when you charged the housing which is very common. Or you kinked the hose and it's not able to breathe properly
That's fine, but how come it was good for a year and only after a year started sweating inside?
Tried on the caddy and it was a fail. Tried on the Kia and it worked as long as I had it.
I'm having a KIA experience 😁
Caddy had major issues then. These only work on perfectly operating systems. That only need to be topped off. If you have a leak or any other issues besides being low these do nothing.
They can also do damage to a/c systems. when people over fill the system and have to have it evacuated and recharged properly. Or worse blow many internal seals.
best to go ahead and drain, vacuum, and refill properly with the correct amount of refrigerant
You are right, but this budget fix worked great
@@VitaliyKofman no judgment here - I've done the "budget" fix many times LOL
Dang that sucks about the headlight.
I remember when you changed them.
Maybe get OEM this time, or maybe pick up a set on your next trip to the junk yard.

Sucks indeed - 1 year almost to the date. I will have a follow up video on the fix, but who knows how long that will hold :)
Man, you didn't even tell me you were having an AC party! 🤣 Maybe next time
It was hardly a party 🤣 Just me and a bottle of that AC recharge
@@VitaliyKofman hey, if it worked! Definitely keep an eye on it for a week. Tried it once, thought I had it but I didn't. Just wanna make sure it's all good!
Do you know how many ounces It holds its in the sticker Under the hood
Thanks,
My 2003 Towncar A/C works but takes a while to cool off what can that be?
Needs a recharge
@@VitaliyKofman So I can go to auto zone and buy a kit
Yes or Walmart
@@VitaliyKofman Ok thanks I was not going to mess with it because I thought it would completely go out and that’s $1200 bucks at the shop.
No problem, your call. When I noticed AC being weak, I thought of trying it and if failed = go to mechanic. Luckily it worked 😀
I just recharged the A/C on my ‘00 Town Car Executive and it’s still not satisfactory. Maybe a worn out clutch or compressor
It did the job for me. Getting colder air and now its colder faster than before.
Hold the can upside down is the proper way to do it
Thanks! Instructions didn't say anything about that.
@@VitaliyKofman you're welcome
2 year update?
I have a more recent video. I used the rest of this can a couple months ago and works great
WHAT AN EDUCATION I AM GETTING IN AMERICAN THOUGHT. This guy is attempting to do a video. OK.... It is a lesson. (meaning no disrespect...... but this is the second vid I have watched today.) It seems a certain percentage of the population has gotten used to operating without critical thinking, which they were never taught (evidently). He is trying to move forward without logic or without simple preparation. I am a technician (in plumbing; electrical; (some)industrial hvac; basic building maintenance. (Big buildings) Not janitorial services, but industrial systems operation and repair. If your going to venture into the Land of Oz (Anything that requires a certain amount of learning or training, ok, it can be done to a degree, no harm, no foul, I have done it....BUT: I always made sure I knew what the basics were before I tried to get some sort of result from manipulating a highly designed system such as auto or any hvac system.. He says "I have no tool to measure temperature of air flow coming from the registers". really? that is usually the first thing one does when diagnosing the operation of a system whether automotive or commercial or residential. Before anything else. this tells you what the system is actually doing. He hooks up the cannister, and makes a video, trying to explain why this or that is not happening......"why is the green gauge saying 35 lbs....or more...or less. then it is going down"............... I could see, just from watching the video, (this video,) that the cannister has directions which say "go to --------online and watch instructions on how to do this". Has he done that?
I can see you are very passionate about your comment, but the end result of this video is that it gave me colder AC 😀
Never Never Never use the freon with sealer, it clogs your orifice tubes. Just the plain R134
I currently own a 1999 a 2004, 2005, and a 2011 I buy the little blue and white cans of R134 from Advance auto. Lincolns always can use a little charge. Never let your freon get to low in winter because if your compressor stops and you use your defrost, you can lock up your compressor

Sorry, can't read that
Dude the video is about charging your ac nobody gives a crap about anything else
You can stop watching it any time 😀
