I blew compressor of my room AC few days ago. Trying refill :)
i just looked up the r134a gage kit from your short cuts and it tells me $168 and that is likely us funds so for me over $200 plus shipping to canada
Had to replace the condenser in my 2015 GMC Sierra last week. The quote was $1350.00 to replace and recharge. I ordered a new condenser from rock auto and installed it myself and recharge the system for $215. 😎
Replaced the condenser on my 2015 Silverado. Same story as yours. Went to Chevy dealership and was told they’re on back order. Comes with a 3 Year warranty. Found one with a lifetime warranty for @$200! Took only @ 1.5 including vacuuming out old Freon and putting in new Freon. Saved a ton of money!
This should be a recall by now. I've been having trouble with my ac for 2 years. On my 2015 silverado.

@@stephenmetz2044 Definately! GM should be ashamed of itself for allowing known faulty products out of the factory. Other than the AC condenser, the truck has been a stellar performer. I knew a young man that told me his air conditioning was not working, so he took it to the same shop that installed a used set of ring and pinion gears in my pickup without telling me, so just for the heck of it he scratches his initials on the bottom side of the ac compressor,
He gets his car back from the shop and the air conditioning is now working ( for 360.00 ) they had to replace the ac compressor , it was all pretty with a new paint job but his initials were still on the bottom of the compressor :)
So did you guys go back and say something?
Maybe they rebuilt it and used the same housing?
Well the air conditioning compressor didn’t happen to me so I don’t have all the details of it,

Where are you supposed to capture the evacuated Freon? It is illegal to just dump it; as you know. The last system that failed on my 90 Geo Storm had to be properly done. I'm not doing a full replacement including the compressor etc. It cost $1,500 for the job. I told the dealer not to fill it with the wrong refrigerant or it won't work. They tried and got caught! They ate the cost of evacuation and fill done by a A/C shop. Now it works like factory new.
Great video Scotty! Simple and to the point. You can save a lot of money doing it yourself and you have the peace of mind of knowing it was done correctly.
how do you know how to fill it with oil or how much oil is in there? and is it possible to do a "flush" to cleanse the whole thing out?
Great video, I would change the shrader valves anytime you completely evacuate the system and refill. Especially if it’s 15 years old. They leak very often on the low side after charging even if you do it correctly. Usually they cost less than a can of coolant.
THAT, my friend, is GREAT ADVICE!!! Just make sure the new Schrader valve is identical to the old one. Replacing the valve can save you a bunch of future heartache!!
@Richard Pedroza No they are not all the same on the high side. The low side are are pretty much the same.
@Richard Pedroza order by model...even gms.... high side and low side are different sizes of valves
2015 isn’t old
thats a waste of money- if you have dytel you can test them very quickly and easily.

This is an awesome video. Maybe I missed something, when you use the pump to remove the refrigerant that is in the system, what do you do with it. Does the pump store it? How is it disposed of.
If you have a nonworking system most of the time the refrigerant has already leaked out all you are doing is creating a vacuum so that you can reinstall refrigerant without having air in there to mess up the system
If it won’t hold the vacuum then you’re finding a leak under vacuum when you have to look around and see if you can spot where you have what looks like an oil stain on a line or something or possibly use dye and a black light
If you can’t find anything let it run and let the water drip out of the evaporator and hit that with the black light and if you see the dye in the water then you got a problem because most evaporators are an SOB to change
Scotty has forgotten more than I know but I have picked up a little over the years
Keep it up Scotty !
Same thing I was wondering what to do with the refrigerant that was stored in the vacuum..?
Same for me. Not sure where to start if I still have refrigerant and need to change it all out.
My Santa fe blows too cold , I actually have to turn it off from time to time 🥶🥶
At what point does he show the ac get "twice" as cold?
This video is very educational. It is like Scotty Kilmer is some auto mechanics professor at some community college vehicle mechanics class.

I replaced the accumulator on my car last year and used the exact method for vacuuming and refiling with 134A. It's still working perfectly a year later.
What did you do with the refrigerant you pulled out? Or was the system completely empty before you started the process?

You should’ve mentioned that if you empty refrigerant into the atmosphere, it’s a $10k fine from the EPA.

What about oil, some cans say they have oil in with the refrigerant?
Question. How do you take the refrigerant out first, to then put in the factory amount?
Scotty has a recovery system, I seen it in some of his videos, but if you are a DYIer and don't own a recovery system your refrigerant could just leak out by accident "hint hint." 😉
Learning to not mess with automotive ac’s is one of those lessons I don’t need to learn the hard way. I just don’t see it going the way I want it to. Ever.
Unless you don’t trust you’re self. (Shows Bidens picture) 😂
Scotty are you advocating venting an existing that is low on refrigerant and then evacuation via vacuum, or only evacuate on an almost empty system where the low pressure protection prevents the compressor clutch from engaging?
People don't realize that vehicles "air conditioning systems" are not true air conditioning like your house. They are in fact High temperature Freezer Systems because of the heat load and poor insulation of a vehicle. True air conditioner would never cool it for comfort in a vehicle.
I bought a 30 pound cylinder 6 months ago and my cost was outrageous even at wholesale.
I am glad you took the time to show people. Shops have gotten out of hand along with every other industry in the world today with prices. It isn't going to be able to sustain it for much longer.
I'm happy with 58° discharge on my old '86 Toyota pickup. I'm too reluctant to pull the evaporator. It still keeps me nice and cool during the dog days of summer.

No such thing as getting a new Vac pump here in Canada for 60$,, lowest I ever saw was close to $200 plus shipping etc. You might find an old used up half broken down pump off the buy N sell for 60$ (I've been lookin). Seems it would be a lot easier and cheaper if I can buy that spray can you were spraying in the vent in the thumbnail. Where's the link for that?
The problem is 99% of the time there will be refrigerant in the system that needs to be recovered.
That's weird, mine always vents out completely somehow before I get to the parts warehouse 🤣
I haven’t been in a shop for a long time now. Haven’t done a/c in about as long. But best I can remember from training about the history of refrigerants was something like this: early refrigerants were highly flammable, it’s replacement was eating the ozone, it’s replacement was a greenhouse gas more potent then methane by 400 times, and it’s replacement was flammable again. Or something like that. LOL can’t win.
It does matter though, the ozone destroying chemicals are bad, restricting those has seriously helped.
My AC works great but only during November, December, January, February, and early-March.
If all cars use 480gm, why don't they sell the cans in 480gm quantities? Bloody companies.

The entire auto repair and service industry in the USA is crooked, incompetent, and rotten to the core, most of the time you are going to get bad workmanship, overcharged, and possibly have your vehicle sabotaged so you have to come back for more repair work so they can rip you off for more money. The industry is beyond repair here!
@@watershed44 That's infuriating.

I’m in Houston my A/C is out and it’s sweltering 97 degrees. I hope I can figure this out
You didn’t account for filling your manifold with Freon, then zeroing the scale so the amount is correct. It’s also important not to open/purge gauges or lines after system is in deep vacuum. Only remove the lines after system is pressurized by refrigerant. I’m not an auto mechanic, but an HVAC & refrigeration tech but these are the same as far as charging procedures.

You're supposed to suck out the the refrigerant already in the car with a vacuum pump but he doesn't explain how to do this. Where does the old refrigerant go? I assume you need a holding tank? Then what do you do with the old refrigerant? All he explains is how to suck out moisture from an empty system so this video doesn't seem very helpful to me.
Very good points!
I'm wondering if Scotty is suggesting to suck out the old refrigerant and dump it into the air??

If it holds all summer, the leak is probably small enough not to worry about.
That's how mines was doing. I had a slow leak.
If I'm not mistaken, in the video "Never Use This on Your Car's AC System", published back in 5/2019, Scotty advised, accordingly, to never do pretty much the exact thing he recommends in this video. Am I missing something?
Hello; I watched the 05/2019 video. I believe in that video he was referring to the old Freon based refrigerant and the ill-advised method of using the can with the built-in low side gauge on the can itself. I believe that he is being consistent with his advice of using the hanging Low and High side gauges. Hope this helps!
Funny: Scotty, a mechanic, says: don't rely on mechanics!!! Other thing, if you have a leak, do not refill, fix it before!!! most of the leaks are bad O-rings!
Old "church" keys to open nostalgic beer before pop tops
My buddy calls the new refrigerant, 1234 boom cause it's flammable
Sounds interesting but, I'll admit it, it seems too tricky for me to try.
Dry nitrogen to test for leaks before pumping it down. Then pull vacuum.
Scotty, what about the line pack amount …. the refrigerant that fills the line before any goes into the car. Doesn’t a certain amt of weight have to be accounted for to fill the line before you can measure the weight that entered the car’s system?
He started weighing after he purged the air from the line, therefore all measured weight went into the system.

Hi Scotty. Great video. I'd love to do this myself but what if there is still freon in the system?
It could just leak out by accident "hint hint" if you don't own a recovery system.😉
My mom's 2009 Honda Fit, it didn't have to be refilled until 2020, so it lasted 11 years
you are supposed to collect the old refrigerant, not just vacuum suck it out and let it go to the atmosphere. Why was it not working? because of a leak? did you fix the leak? if not, you will be adding can after can over the months. And did you use florescein dye to find the leak?, what about refrigerant oil? OY!
But if you can put a vacuum on the system and it holds relatively long, sure the old refrigerant was lost over the 10+ years, but wouldn't a new charge be likely to hold then?
scotty is too pure for this world

When you suck out the refrigerant, what do you do with it? Does it just go into the atmosphere or do you have to capture it somehow?
Terrific...Just terrific!!!!!! Especially the inexpensive parts!!!!
The only thing I see wrong is that the refrigerant cannot be released into the atmosphere. There is a big fine if caught.

Right into the atmosphere?
You are suppose to use a thermometer not a laser to check the temp. You wont get an accurate reading using the laser to check air temp.

I only use AC when it becomes unbearably hot which is kinda rare for me since I just roll down the windows as my first option. I guess I'm not one of these 'minor to moderate discomfort must be attended to immediately' people. Not hating on people who are like that....I know we are all different. Just sayin.
So wait. The beginning of the video Scotty says don't use the cans that come in the store because they only have the low side gauges. then he goes on to say when you buy the gauge only use the low side. Wtf?
Generous guy, not many mechanics out there that would share this information with you, for free!
RUclips is full of them🤣🤣🤣😂😂. There plenty of people you can tell and show them exactly how to do something, they are not mechanically inclined, lack confidence to do it or just to dang lazy to do it their self and would rather pay hundreds of dollars to fix something. Or the last one they just get into a high payment and pay a payment for a new car with a warranty so they don't have to fix it and they trade every 3-5 years or more. Often times these folks would be better off buying a good used car and even paying a mechanic to fix it when it brakes. Car payments are not cheap!
@@natevanlandingham1945 why would you need to fix your car, every time it brakes? 😏
@@654Crossman cause Breakdowns suck!🤣🤣🤣😜😜😂
@@natevanlandingham1945 lol. I couldn't help myself. 👍
@@654Crossman I actually caught it as I wrote it, but just sent it anyway!! I figure these days very few people would even catch it!!🤣🤷🏻♂️🙄
Some people probably don't even know what we're talking about! 🤣
