This is an awesome video. Maybe I missed something, when you use the pump to remove the refrigerant that is in the system, what do you do with it. Does the pump store it? How is it disposed of.
If you have a nonworking system most of the time the refrigerant has already leaked out all you are doing is creating a vacuum so that you can reinstall refrigerant without having air in there to mess up the system If it won’t hold the vacuum then you’re finding a leak under vacuum when you have to look around and see if you can spot where you have what looks like an oil stain on a line or something or possibly use dye and a black light If you can’t find anything let it run and let the water drip out of the evaporator and hit that with the black light and if you see the dye in the water then you got a problem because most evaporators are an SOB to change Scotty has forgotten more than I know but I have picked up a little over the years Keep it up Scotty !
Something was wrong with my AC. I almost went diy, but I took it to my mechanic. Turns out it was overcharged. They corrected it. Now it works very well.
Where are you supposed to capture the evacuated Freon? It is illegal to just dump it; as you know. The last system that failed on my 90 Geo Storm had to be properly done. I'm not doing a full replacement including the compressor etc. It cost $1,500 for the job. I told the dealer not to fill it with the wrong refrigerant or it won't work. They tried and got caught! They ate the cost of evacuation and fill done by a A/C shop. Now it works like factory new.
Learning to not mess with automotive ac’s is one of those lessons I don’t need to learn the hard way. I just don’t see it going the way I want it to. Ever.
As prices go up on everything, It's pretty much mandatory to do everything myself now days. Thank you for posting videos like this that are easy for me to follow along with. It makes me confident that I'm not going to screw anything up and blow myself up in the process lol.
I spend 115 on the pump and 40 on the gauges and 90 on the condenser. After that I bought 120 on the oil and the refrigerant. So all in all I spend about 380. That’s way cheaper than the 800 quote I got. Your videos helped me. Thank you so much

You're the man Scotty Kilmer! Im off to order the tools. Got a quote for $300 to get my AC recharged yesterday. I would rather do it myself but I was intimidated. Not anymore!!
Scotty are you advocating venting an existing that is low on refrigerant and then evacuation via vacuum, or only evacuate on an almost empty system where the low pressure protection prevents the compressor clutch from engaging? People don't realize that vehicles "air conditioning systems" are not true air conditioning like your house. They are in fact High temperature Freezer Systems because of the heat load and poor insulation of a vehicle. True air conditioner would never cool it for comfort in a vehicle. I bought a 30 pound cylinder 6 months ago and my cost was outrageous even at wholesale. I am glad you took the time to show people. Shops have gotten out of hand along with every other industry in the world today with prices. It isn't going to be able to sustain it for much longer.
Handy primer on using a manifold gauge with the AC system, Scotty! By the way, it isn't 30 pounds vacuum, it's 30 inches! Been working with vehicle AC for decades. My take on r-1234yf? It's a real pickle, stupid expensive and hazardous material, more flammable than you think. Regarding the high side, one must be very careful when the compressor is running, AND you must be mindful of the VALVES on your manifold. You can interconnect the high and low side if both valves are OPEN. If your fill line, the yellow one, does not have a safety valve you can send high pressure refrigerant toward that wee metal can! It isn't designed for that pressure. As a professional, I must diagnose the system in operation. Thus, I monitor the high side pressure to verify the compressor and TXV operation. Handy trick! You can check the high side valve if your quick disconnect is working properly. Those knobs work in reverse from the way you think they do. As the QD is fitted, it locks atop the service port and seals the connection. Rotating the valve clockwise depresses the Schraeder valve on the service port. There is a "dead spot" as the knob is operated. When completely turned counterclockwise, the quick disconnect is shut off to the hose. I apply vacuum to the manifold, and verify (with an uncharged system) that the Schraeder valve will hold a vacuum when seated. This question has become moot with R-1234yf. If I had a penny for each time the leak was the valves, think I'd have a real bankroll by now. Nasty stuff.
I haven’t been in a shop for a long time now. Haven’t done a/c in about as long. But best I can remember from training about the history of refrigerants was something like this: early refrigerants were highly flammable, it’s replacement was eating the ozone, it’s replacement was a greenhouse gas more potent then methane by 400 times, and it’s replacement was flammable again. Or something like that. LOL can’t win.
I picked up a dozen cans of R-134 at Wal-Mart for $4.44 / can. Now it's $8.88. Prob still a good price. R-410 for the house was $150 / 25 lbs a few years ago, now it's $600!
@@4door2seater99 I'd say buy it now while you can! Even at this higher price it's probably going to go up even more. The newest R1234YF is like $40 for an 8oz can!!!!
This method is the exact method id say most mechanics actually use when doing AC work, just with fancier more expensive equipment than can diagnose issues with the system itself.
Scotty has a recovery system, I seen it in some of his videos, but if you are a DYIer and don't own a recovery system your refrigerant could just leak out by accident "hint hint." 😉
Small correction! Hvac guy here! The compressor won't die because of too much pressure, as your pressure fluctuates all the time...what kills it is liquid not saturating into a gas by the time the refridgerant reaches the compressor, which is caused when you overcharge the sytem! It has too much liquid to process, and once that liquid hits the compressor it will likely kill it! The compressor is responsible for turning Low Pressure Medium Temperature Gas into a High Pressure High Tempurature Gas, the heat is then rejected into the air turning it back to a liquid through the condenser, goes through back to the evaporator and starts transitioning into a gas again by absorbing the heat from inside air :) Good video though, and I would recommend anyone who doesn't know the refrigeration cycle and P/T Temp relationships etc to do it this way, can't go wrong!

Been watching your videos and really enjoying them. Have learned a lot. Recently we bought a used Toyota Camry (2014 with 44,000 miles on it) and noticed that the mpg was not what I thought it should be. Was running 22mpg! In one of your videos, you mentioned that a dirty air filter might be the cause of poor mileage. You nailed it! Replaced the filter, and now it is up to 27mpg! Thank you. BTW love the car
If you are going to go to all that trouble, replace the schrader valves before you hook anything up. That way you do not need to worry about the valves leaking when you are finished.
If you're replacing the valves, I'm guessing you'll need to run the vacuum pump for another 45 minutes before filling? Reason I ask is that you must evacuate the system before removing/replacing a valve, right? And in order to access the valve, you have to disconnect the vacuum pump, right?
@@Keifsanderson Scotty usually recommends evacuating the system in case like this to prevent any refrigerant from escaping into the atmosphere. So all you have to do is run the evacuater until the pressure is zero, stop, replace the schrader valves, and then continue with the evacuation like normal. If the pressure is already zero then just replace the schrader valves at the get go and then evacuate. Then when you refill the system you will have brand new valves and not have to worry about the valves leaking after putting in all that expensive refrigerant and loosing it or starting the whole process over again.
I never have luck with Autozone rentals on these gauges. Usually are missing fittings or seals. Vacuum pump was a complete mess and would over heat and stop. Its cheap just to get a harbor freight set.
Funny you mention this, i just borrowed these gauges twice, after i was done pulling a vacuum i had a loud hissing leak on the low side valve on two cars, broke each valve and had to spent 26 bucks to replace them, never again.
I bought a valve system for refrigerant when I saw someone had thrown out a huge ice cream fridge and I plugged it in but it refused to cool off. I figured it was worth the money to see if I could fix this $800 freezer. It worked! Shortly after I bought a used car and it needed to be recharged so I did it myself after buying a $10 can of refrigerant. They are cheaper if you already have the valve part. Now my car puts out an arctic blast! Pretty proud of myself and have a lot of extra cash in my pocket.
Scotty, what about the line pack amount …. the refrigerant that fills the line before any goes into the car. Doesn’t a certain amt of weight have to be accounted for to fill the line before you can measure the weight that entered the car’s system?

If it won’t hold the vacuum then you’re finding a leak under vacuum when you have to look around and see if you can spot where you have what looks like an oil stain on a line or something or possibly use dye and a black light
If you can’t find anything let it run and let the water drip out of the evaporator and hit that with the black light and if you see the dye in the water then you got a problem because most evaporators are an SOB to change
Scotty has forgotten more than I know but I have picked up a little over the years
Keep it up Scotty !
Same thing I was wondering what to do with the refrigerant that was stored in the vacuum..?
Same for me. Not sure where to start if I still have refrigerant and need to change it all out.
Thank you sooo much for this great info Scotty!
You can't beat honesty. I appreciate honest people more than gold, because honesty is hard to come by these days.
Something was wrong with my AC. I almost went diy, but I took it to my mechanic. Turns out it was overcharged. They corrected it. Now it works very well.
Terrific...Just terrific!!!!!! Especially the inexpensive parts!!!!
Yes Scotty, even elderly women love 😻 To watch your videos!!
This is a great Scotty video. The reason I started watching him in the first place. Thank you Scotty!
Genius!! Such a simple solution to an issue that seemed hopeless.
Thank you for sharing Mr.Kilmer! Always learning things here and there from you!
I'm glad Scotty is starting to put the "Things used in this video" again

My buddy calls the new refrigerant, 1234 boom cause it's flammable
As prices go up on everything, It's pretty much mandatory to do everything myself now days. Thank you for posting videos like this that are easy for me to follow along with. It makes me confident that I'm not going to screw anything up and blow myself up in the process lol.
I spend 115 on the pump and 40 on the gauges and 90 on the condenser. After that I bought 120 on the oil and the refrigerant. So all in all I spend about 380. That’s way cheaper than the 800 quote I got. Your videos helped me. Thank you so much
how do you know how to fill it with oil or how much oil is in there? and is it possible to do a "flush" to cleanse the whole thing out?
Me and the homies love the Scotty Kilmer channel
Little known fact, when the Ozon scare was created DuPont's patent on Freon 12 was expiring, so Freon was going to get cheap. Guess who has the patent on the new Freon's.
evil. not supporting DuPont
Just put in some AC/PRO for the second spring in a row and the AC is now blowing 63.9 F. This stuff is Golden.

I’ve seen mechanics say a compressor was bad without checking the compensating valve or knowing it had one. I picked up a “worn out “ compressor and swapped the compensating valve out and it worked perfectly. Harrison Delphi V5!!
This is so helpful. AC is such a black art, if you listen to mechanic$.

Alright. Party at Scotty's.
Brilliant...They don't want you to know. Can't tell you how much I have spent on this in past...
It does matter though, the ozone destroying chemicals are bad, restricting those has seriously helped.
I have used that procedure a couple times after replacing the compressor and filter-dryer. It works great.
Scotty, I love when you do videos like this, and teach new skills. These walk throughs are great. Thank you
Scotty I'm so glad I found you mate!
I picked up a dozen cans of R-134 at Wal-Mart for $4.44 / can. Now it's $8.88. Prob still a good price. R-410 for the house was $150 / 25 lbs a few years ago, now it's $600!
All prices is going up it's ridiculous. Thank the democrats..
Yes 8.88 is unfucking believable I was shocked!!
@@4door2seater99 I'd say buy it now while you can! Even at this higher price it's probably going to go up even more. The newest R1234YF is like $40 for an 8oz can!!!!
@@Hubjeep ok good point I will
I feel confident enough to do it myself, thank you!!
Thank you Scotty! Loving your work. Learning so much 🇨🇦❤️
This method is the exact method id say most mechanics actually use when doing AC work, just with fancier more expensive equipment than can diagnose issues with the system itself.
What about oil, some cans say they have oil in with the refrigerant?
Dry nitrogen to test for leaks before pumping it down. Then pull vacuum.
Love you Scotty! Need this video living in Las Vegas 100 degrees all week! 🏜🚗💗
Then you need to find some water!!!
this is the best Scotty video he has ever made
Question. How do you take the refrigerant out first, to then put in the factory amount?
Scotty has a recovery system, I seen it in some of his videos, but if you are a DYIer and don't own a recovery system your refrigerant could just leak out by accident "hint hint." 😉
Awesome ! This will help me immensely! Thankyou!
Thank you
Now I understand what I was not doing . Removal of lower end . Off to the store !
Ok. When you are pulling a vacuum on the system what are you doing with the discharge Freon? Are you venting it to the atmosphere?
Curious as well!?
Just let it go nobody cares
Small correction! Hvac guy here! The compressor won't die because of too much pressure, as your pressure fluctuates all the time...what kills it is liquid not saturating into a gas by the time the refridgerant reaches the compressor, which is caused when you overcharge the sytem! It has too much liquid to process, and once that liquid hits the compressor it will likely kill it! The compressor is responsible for turning Low Pressure Medium Temperature Gas into a High Pressure High Tempurature Gas, the heat is then rejected into the air turning it back to a liquid through the condenser, goes through back to the evaporator and starts transitioning into a gas again by absorbing the heat from inside air :)
Good video though, and I would recommend anyone who doesn't know the refrigeration cycle and P/T Temp relationships etc to do it this way, can't go wrong!

Scotty Kilmer is a bonafide, grade A legend.
@@Keifsanderson
Scotty usually recommends evacuating the system in case like this to prevent any refrigerant from escaping into the atmosphere.
Scotty ! You are priceless !

Thank you Scotty! Great information to save us all some money!!
SCOTTY U R SIMPLY THE BEST
I never have luck with Autozone rentals on these gauges. Usually are missing fittings or seals. Vacuum pump was a complete mess and would over heat and stop. Its cheap just to get a harbor freight set.
Funny you mention this, i just borrowed these gauges twice, after i was done pulling a vacuum i had a loud hissing leak on the low side valve on two cars, broke each valve and had to spent 26 bucks to replace them, never again.
Scotty is they man tells the truth saves us lots of money
I see your e-bikes in the back and love ya even more for it!
I'd love to go riding with Scotty. If he can move his legs as fast as his hands I bet he's fast!
You should’ve mentioned that if you empty refrigerant into the atmosphere, it’s a $10k fine from the EPA.
What kind
What mama don't know won't hurt her ;)
And how exactly is that enforced?
Thx for mentioning it, it's looks mental.
@@CareyHolzman I misremembered. It’s up to $37,500 fine. $10,000 reward for turning someone in for venting refrigerant.

Scotty, what about the line pack amount …. the refrigerant that fills the line before any goes into the car. Doesn’t a certain amt of weight have to be accounted for to fill the line before you can measure the weight that entered the car’s system?
He started weighing after he purged the air from the line, therefore all measured weight went into the system.
Great timing. The hot weather is coming....
We can never thank you enough Scotty!
