    I have loved incense for years, always trying different scents and finally settled on a favorite which happens to be Nag Champa! I burn a tremendous amount daily, it's like a little piece of heaven to me. I find it calming, peaceful, mind clearing and just all things good! My husband made me extremely happy on Christmas morning because he bought me a enormous supply that 'should' last for awhile. AWESOME!

    When I was hardcore into incenses around 2009-11, there was a huge controversy about Satya Sai Baba Nag Champa. Around that time, the resin halmaddi (which is in a lot of champa agarbattis) was getting harder to source, and every incense reviewer and blogger could swear that Satya removed it from their Nag Champa and it "smelled different." I couldn't tell until I got a new box in 2011....and yeah, it smelled different than my previous box. The thick, fluffy creaminess was gone, replaced by a stronger perfumey smell. But it was a thinner fragrance overall, and smokier. The stick itself was also thinner. This set off what I can only describe as a "mad dash" for halmaddi-based incenses. Looking back at this years later, I can only laugh, because it was hilarious. Finding an incense that used halmaddi was like a treasure, and it spread in the community like wildfire. "Shanthimalai has it!" "Nikhil Ananda Flora has it!" "Dhuni has it!" "Divine Flora has it!"....etc. But at the same time, people grumbled because while all these sticks smelled good, they weren't "the same" as the Satya brand, which was a classic since the 60's. From the boxes you showed, it looks like the Satya brand has expanded its line, because I haven't heard of several of those. And since you said it smells good, I guess they're using halmaddi again. Because my last box from 7 years ago did NOT smell good.
    Hari Darshan! Yes, they make good stuff. I had a few of theirs I believe. That stick you have there is massive, larger than the Sai Flora sticks that smoked like a smokestack. You need a large area for that...a large house, like you said, or outdoors. Rolled masala sticks and durbar sticks are all I looked for when I was buying Indian incense. I generally hated the dipped, lower-quality charcoal ones. The durbar sticks were the treasures. If you were able to find ones that were so gummy they stuck together, you knew you were in for a treat.
    One maker I'd suggest checking out (and there are many, as you say) is N. Ranga Rao. Cycle Brand is their lower end, but N. Ranga Rao is the higher end, and I remember loving their "Yatra" incense. Ditto for Balaji. Balaji has some scent bombs if you look. I wish I could remember the name of some other makers...there are so many out of South India, as you and I discussed before. And if the material shortage of 2011-ish has resolved, I'm guessing the quality has shot up several notches. Wonderful discussion in this video....thanks :)

    Satya Nag Champa is being made by 2 companies. 1 in Mumbai and 1 in Bangaluru. The Mumbai factory makes the new version of nag champa and the Bengaluru factory produces the original nag champa and super hit as well. They are not the same incense at all. Information about Satya splitting apart and the differences between the 2 companies products can be found all over the internet.

    • @matthewlaporte6065
      @matthewlaporte6065 6 лет назад +4

      @@nikhilsfrags sadly to say your box is one from Mumbai. You see, Satya used to be run by the father of Satya, he passed away and left the company for the 2 brothers. The 2 brothers had trouble staying together in the company so the company was split in 2. One brother took all the distributors and went to Mumbai and the other brother kept all the incense recipes in Bengaluru. The original Satya comes from Shrinivas Sugandhalaya (BNG) LLP and have registration and copywright symbols next to the names and logos. Also the original carries a "green earth" symbol and has 3 color toned seals on the ends of the box, not 2 colors like the Mumbai version.
      It really is too bad, the original Nag Champa and Superhit were very good incense before Mumbai went and ruined everything. There are a few more pending legal battles between the 2 companies as they are still fighting. Myself I'd rather have nothing to do with the Mumbai Satya incense as it smells cheap and fake compared to the real Satya incense from Bengaluru.

      @@matthewlaporte6065 You should make an exception and try a pack of Nagarj Setty's (Mumbai) 'Golden Era', they're the closest I've found to the original Nag Champa yet. I'm an old fart, trust me. I totally agree with your comments about the split, and the rash of bad incense that came out of the Mumbai plant that damaged the Satya brand. Nagarj Setty has moved forward a lot since then and now makes some very good incense, nothing like the junk that he flooded the market with originally. The two halves of the company now have separate logo's since 2017. I won't buy any Satya incense without one of the new logo's for ID, the old logo stuff is a game of chance. ATB.

    • @matthewlaporte6065
      @matthewlaporte6065 6 лет назад +1

      @@chrisdado Thanks for the feedback. I have tried golden era but did not like it as I found it smelled of burning recycled paper and other refuse. From what you say I'm thinking it may have been some old stock. Where I live there are many shops who sell satya but it's all from Mumbai and I'm sure there are warehouses full of it waiting to go on shelves. It may be several years before we see any new batches around here. In the meantime, a representative from Shrinivas Sugandhalaya ( BNG ) LLP has offered to send me some proper Nag Champa and Super hit. The first Nag Champa I ever smelled was over 20 years ago, I want THAT incense.... or whatever comes close I guess.

    • @chrisdado
      @chrisdado 6 лет назад

      @@matthewlaporte6065 Definitely sounds like old stock Matthew, warehouses are still full of Nagarj's old junk. Congrat's on getting a Balkrishna rep' to sort you out, hopefully its something different than the standard Balkrishna's Nag Champa (still better than Nagarj's early efforts, but not the original of 20 years ago). You might be lucky and get a sample of something they've got in the pipeline for future release. Keep us posted. ATB.

    Nag Champa from India is absolutely, the Best incense made anywhere in the world!!
    From their visual examination to finally the burn, there ARE NO other incense made with the same fragrances or high quality as you'd find with incense made here. They burn long and clean and the variety is incredible.

    harder to find Hari Darshan in the US. Just bought a 30gram box of Devghandh on eBay to try out. I love Satya brand and been using it going on 25+ years now. especially nag champa. Always reupping a 250gram box all the time. No matter how high or low I was in life, I could always afford a box of nag champa to lift my spirit.

    Great review!! I’m so glad to see you reviewing incense as well. I have been burning incense since the early 90’s and nothing can compare in the incense world to the hand crafted incense of India using only the finest natural ingredients. I have to agree with the others that Nag Champa is not the same today as it was. Something changed.
    I have always preferred incense over perfume as there is a complexity in the ingredients and the smoke that is not present in most perfume. I don’t have a refined sense of smell by any means but I know quality when I smell it.
    I would like to thank you for your videos as i stumbled across them in my search for a fragrance more akin to incense. I’m quite sure I would enjoy many of the niche perfumes but I just can’t afford them. You’re recommendations on some of the affordable traditional Indian attars were spot on! I ordered a few and WoW that is what I was searching for.
    It’s funny that you did an incense video because after smelling the attars I was going to reach out to you to see if you could make any recommendations as to something similar to my 2 favorite incenses. I had in the past thought, I wish there was a perfumer that I could send these to and somehow recreate a liquid version. They are getting more difficult to locate so if you have any recommendations I would be extremely grateful. If you can’t find one or both I’m willing to share some with you. Both are from the Satya brand, but for some reason no one speaks of them. The first one is Masala T.T. Loban and the second one is Rajdhani .
    Also for your information if you are not aware the dragons blood resin when burned puts out a lovely aroma. The dragons blood incense is not even close to the actual resin. Sorry for the long post but I have one last recommendation. There is an incense from Senegal Africa that’s worthwhile to check into. It has several spellings Tchouraï, Thiouraye, Chouraye , or Churai.
    Thank you again!
    Bryan

    Nikhilbhai, one more strange thing I came to know about Nag Champa. Few years back this company was splited between two brothers. Both are using more or less same packing and same name like Shrinivas Sugandhalaya (BNG) LLP and Shrinivas Sugandhalaya LLP. What I came to know from my friends is the one from Bangalore is more close to what it used to be earlier. The one from Mumbai have started using cheap materials and the quality is not that good as the other one also they have started using machines and those are not hand rolled. The best way to identify is on the single pack if you see two address, one from Mumbai and one from Bangalore is the one which is low in quality. The one with only Bangalore address should be the good one. Having said that before commenting on this I tried to contact the company in Bangalore, the owner is not in India at the moment but he will be back by the end of this month. Also I asked them if they are selling products on Amazon or not and they said that we are selling but at the moment due to some problems all our products are not visible at all. This is the link of that Bangalore based company. satyaincense.in/Nagachampa_detail.htm. If any one has more specific information about this please share. And Nikhilbhai if this information is true that in future one review of comparison of both will be much appreciated.

      It's on any packaging. If the word Mumbai is on the packaging anywhere then it is not the one that's made at the ORIGINAL plant.
      And for those of you reading this right now that have no idea what the hell I'm talking about... If the word Mumbai is on the packaging anywhere it's not the original and trust me there are substantial differences.
      You will only see a Bengaluru address. Nothing else. And that is not just for the nag Champa there are several that both plants manufacture.
      The original is hands down the ABSOLUTE BEST.

    I just got back into incense again, and someone said I should check you out. I've been watching your reviews for a while but didn't see any incense reviews. I'm a fragrance reviewer also, and I'm going to start doing incense reviews also. I just got Nippon Kodo Aloeswood/Agarwood incense from Japan that I'm going to review. Have you ever experienced this one?

    Great video! Good advice as well, out of curiosity what's the lifespan of insence, like before burning I mean shelf life, as if I bought a good amount to last how long does still hold the fragrance? Thank's!

    Not only are the products not available but there are some negative reviews as well? its either because people are not familiar with agar wood or similar scents, or it could be that these are not real hand rolled incense sticks?

    Excellent topic Nikhil, as I grew up with incense sticks from my childhood. Coincidentally enough, I have a few varieties from Hari Darshan on the way, so I am really looking forward to trying them, as this will be my first experience with them. I have heard some controversial issues surrounding Satya and degrading quality, so I never gave them a shot. I would also kindly warn people drawn to the most popular brands like HEM, which is front and center when most people search incense sticks, as they are poor quality and highly synthetic.
    People should also look to burning actual resins - they are absolutely amazing (and of course 100% natural, so you don't have to worry about issues such as harsh perfume chemicals being spiked in most common incense sticks). Green hojari frankincense from Oman, Yemeni myrrh, etc....absolute stunners, esp when burned in non-charcoal burners to not detract from the purity with the heavy smoke.
