Hi I’m Rick Shiels, welcome to my channel RickShielsPGAGolf. This RUclips channel is designed to help you play better golf, also to help you enjoy your golf more!
I specialise in golf club reviews, golf club unboxing, golf club news, golf club head to heads, and all about golf clubs.
I also want to make you play better golf by providing coaching video on all topics about golf, how to fix your slice, fix your hook, help you drive the golf ball longer, hit your irons more pure, hit your irons closer to the hole and help you draw and fade your golf shots.
I will also help you lower your score by chipping better by stopping you duff and thin chips, pitch the ball closer and also create backspin. Also I will provide you help to putt better and hole more putts!
On this channel I also make fun and entertaining golf content based on crazy and sometimes “gimmicky” golf clubs. I like to cut through the marketing hype about products and I like to give you the honest truth about golf equipment.
If you enjoy the channel make sure you hit subscribe and also tap the notification bell so that you are always notified when I release a new video.

Awesome video! Could you do a similar one on irons? I'm curious about how well second-hand irons age over time. My main question would be concerning grooves, and how their age can potentially affect shots or not. To me, they're such a huge investment, and shelling out well over $1200 (sorry, US based 😂) on a set just doesn't sit well with me

Yes, this is what it was looking for too. New golfer and I don’t want to spend thousands on building my first bag. Will wait to buy new after I have a few years under my belt and I really know what I want. I have been buying some used clubs and have built a bag of ping hybrids and call away irons from the last 5 years for about $400 total. Only mistake I made was accidentally buying a call away driver with a senior flex that I don’t care for (I am 45 yrs , 155lbs).
Still, $100 on a bad purchase of the driver is no big deal compared to $500+ on a new one.

Rick, this was a very helpful and timely video for me at the moment. I am looking to do exactly this - buy a decent second-hand driver (few years old) that stacks up with what's out there today all at a reasonable price without sacrificing too much in the way of technology or performance. This is perfect for somebody like me who is in the in-between stages of working on their swing while not quite ready to invest in a costly fitting. I would LOVE to see the same kind of video done for your favorite set of irons in the same class. Many thanks!

I went with a second hand Mavrik Sub zero about 6 months ago. Traded in an M5 at Roger Dunn and only paid $25 out of pocket for it. Scored a Ventus Black 6x shaft for $150 and the Mavrik with the Ventus has been a fairway finder! My total cost including the $150 I originally bought the M5 for is $325. Only $25 more than a new Mavrik still sells for, and I have a majorly upgraded shaft.

The best advice I ever received when it came to new clubs and game improvement was this: "It doesn't really matter what clubs you use, it's the person holding it that counts. Get yourself some lessons before buying new clubs." Case in point - a buddy of mine from another country who's a decent golfer (8 hcp) came to visit me recently. He used my 15 year old Clevelend irons, which he's never played with, and a borrowed putter. He shot 79 on a course he'd never seen.

I tried a friend's and was blown away at the length as well as the direction control, went home and ordered one . Each time I hit it I say most forgiving driver ever as the ball finds fairway after fairway .

Grabbed myself a Cobra Speedzone Xtreme last year, and couldn't be happier. I've not hit a driver this forgiving on off-center strikes. The ball speed jumps about 3-5mph on center strikes as it should, but off-center it's just so consistent. As much as I want the latest and greatest, I'll keep this baby in my bag for years to come.

And he says "Yeah, I just want some younger man like you to enjoy it. I shouldn't be swinging a stiff flex anymore these days anyways!" I borrowed a buddy's Sim 2 and didn't see any difference in performance, but that could just be because I'm garbage at golf haha.

Just right after the driver change, my instructor had a R9 4-wood head, which I've paired with an almost similar shaft in my driver (a Pro 60R instead of a 50R one). I've found that some golf shops like Global Golf sell demo driver heads very cheaply online once the new models arrive. Since most new drivers have adjustable shafts that can be swapped out easily, buying just the head is a great way to save money. Also, it's much cheaper to ship just the head, than the complete club.

Great information is always! I follow several popular golf channels and my conclusion is the same after watching many, many reviews, it takes 10 years to see true changes in in distance, most manufacturers average one extra yard per year. Last year switched from Taylormade SLDR to 2nd hand Titleist TSi2 found it's a lot more forgiving. Would love to see video on irons still playing Taylormade Rblades think it's time to upgrade. Great video as always

Great video ! I've never owned new clubs , for the exact reason you just profiled ! I've been playing a TM Jetspeed driver for the last 4 yrs and have my eye on either a Ping 400 max or TM 2 ! I'm 68 now and hit it about 220-40 yds , sometimes need a little forgiveness !

I'm all for 2nd hand drivers, I've just purchased 2 to replace my SLDR, I got the Callaway XR16 pro, and the GBB sub zero. Both are great drivers, with the XR16 I can shape shots off the tee better than ever before, and with the GBB it really goes when you nail one in the middle.

Great video Rick. I recently got a Taylormade SLDR 10.5 degree driver and I have been loving the absolute bombs that I get from it. Any driver I use will need to match it on distance, almost everything will beat it on forgiveness. You didn't mention mention drivers from Cobra, Mizuno or even Srixon. Those options do exist.

Cheers Rick! Great video as always! I've been in thr market for a 7 wood. My bag is all PXG and a Ping G 3 wood. Looking at a Ping 7 wood or PXG. Something people may not know now is PXG is extremely competitive with pricing now.

I bought myself a Ping G 2016 driver a couple months ago for my birthday. I absolutely love it. It’s 10 years newer than my previous driver and way more forgiving. It also just looks cool and inspires confidence at address with the turbulators and dragonfly wing crown. Someday I’ll replace my 30 year old starter irons.

I did get get a new driver this year. I was fitted into a Wilson Staff D9. A great driver for about 3/5ths the price of its competitors. During my fitting it came down to the D9 and the cobra rad speed. While the average distance of the cobra was (just) longer than d9, the d9 was much more accurate and found the fairway more often for me. That, compounded with the price point, the D9 won out. I was a little apprehensive about the purchase at first, mostly because I never realy associated Wilson Staff as a premium golf brand; but after taking it to the range several times and playing a few games, I have zero regrets.

Great Video again Rick. I’m probably looking at changing my driver this year. I’ve had a Wilson Staff C300 for nearly 3 years but recently lost a rubber infill from one of the top power holes. Wilson can’t supply me with a replacement and none of the repair shops I’ve approached can get Wilson spares. I’ve made a makeshift infill repair but it’s put me off the driver and Wilson as a brand tbh.
I will almost certainly be looking at buying second hand and I do fancy Ping, Taylor Made or Cobra. Keep up the good work Rick 👍🏻

Great video Rick. I recently watched an old video of yours from 2017, where you tested driver makes from that last 5 years, 2012 to 2017. So from that I have not long purchased a Taylormade SLDR and I'm looking to also buy a Ping G20.
If both of those can stack up against those 2017 drivers you mentioned here then I'm sure I'll be bagging a bargain. Especially as I'm currently unable to work.

Totally agree, Callaway preowned usually has a 25-30% off sale where you can pick up last year's driver for less than $200... hard to justify spending $550+ for the latest and greatest.

I bought the GBB Epic back in 2017 after 2 years of playing golf. I have swapped it out 4 times since just because I fancied something new. I was fitted each time for my new drivers, but nothing felt, and sounded, as good as the GBB Epic. After a few weeks of trying to get used to the new driver(s) I would find myself putting the Epic back in the bag. I'll definitely give the new Rogue a try when Callaway come to my club, but it will have to be pretty special to displace the GBB Epic!

I've got the Callaway. Bought it at the beginning of last season. After a long time of trying to find a driver that I'm happy with I've been really pleased with it. Just feel the head shape gives me confidence behind the ball so can just swing free.

Just bought myself a second hand Taylormade RBZ Stage 2 driver! Been using the 3 wood of the RBZ Stage 2 for years and love it, was struggling with my driver so decided to go with something familiar. I'm a 15 handicapper so don't really see the point in shelling out 400+ on a new driver when my inconsistent ball striking is what's holding me back more than any club technology. Got the RBZ for $90, lovely. Great video as always Rick, would love to see this on irons too

Another great video, and on point for a lot of us.... Last fall, I ran across a deal on a PXG Gen 2 driver, including a variety of different shafts for a fraction of the cost of the new ones. I never owned any PXG club before, but I cannot say enough good about this one. I like the look, the balance, the sound and feel. And, I hit it pretty good right out of the gate. Usually takes me awhile to make friends with any new club. Was wondering if you had given any thought to a heads up comparison of PXG drivers? You know, older models vs the newer models. Keep up the good work!

I went with the 2018 Callaway Rogue SubZero driver (based on your 2018 review) and the Callaway Rogue 3 and 5 woods too... can't wait for the snow to melt! BTW... they are replacing a 1994 King Cobra driver and 1998 Callaway Big Bertha Warbird 3 and 5 woods (and hit them really well, wanted a little more distance)!!

Great vid Rick. Depending on where you live, there are loads of 2nd hand clubs that are in GREAT condition. i understand wanting to customize irons for your game, but with the amount of adjustability in drivers now, you can get away with buying used. the cost of a new driver just keeps going up and up and up so much it makes 2nd hand clubs a great buy.
