- The Greatest Song I've Ever Heard - The New Seekers (1973)
Now, the greenest green I've ever seen, was the grass on which you lay,
and the bluest blue was in my eyes, when you said you couldn't stay,
and the biggest loss I ever took was, losing what we'd begun,
and the greatest song I've ever heard, was the one we never sung.
Now, the reddest red, I've always said, is the sunset coming down,
soon the blackest night that kills the light, is the only thing around.
And the downest down I've ever been was, when I knew my race was run,
and the greatest song I've ever heard was the one we never sung.
Time will keep the pain, they say, and we'll live to love another day,
if you want to win, you've got to play the game.
Now, the greyest grey came on the day, we were standing in the rain,
and the hardest hurt I've ever known, was when you tried to ease the pain,
and the longest day in history is waiting till my crying's done,
and the greatest song I've ever heard was the one we never sung.
And the saddest song I've ever heard was the one we fin'lly sung.

It's almost 50 years old and I've heard it for the first time today. Astonishingly good song. One of the greatest songs I'd never heard.
One of the greatest, best songs ever. Eve Graham's voice is unparalleled
My father Dick Holler wrote this song in 1973. The New Seekers also performed it on the Mike Douglas show. Cher covered it as well. Out of all the songs my father's written, this one's my favourite. He's 78 now, still travelling and writing. eve Graham really did the song justice.
Excellent David. I met Eve a few years ago and this song was one she was particularly proud of. I think her vocal is fantastic and i adore the song from childhood. Best wishes to your pops.
The first time I heard it was by cher. I though then and now the song was so emotional I wish I could find it in karaoke. Thanks for sharing. I did not know your father wrote some many songs
David Holler: How blessed we are for the gift of your father’s beautiful song. The 1st version I heard was by Cher and has always been a favorite of mine. God bless!
I came here from Cher's version. What an incredible poem and melody.
I loved this song since the first time I heard it when I was a child. I still love it today.
Well Mr Holler your dad did a cracking good job this is the best New Seekers song ever !
a classic new seekers song, should have been released as a single in the uk - a hit that got away!
Beautiful song sung by Eve Graham. Heard this on an aircheck from WIP in Philly from August 1973, exactly 47 years ago. This might have been a promo copy or the music director just decided to play it from an album. Those were great days to listen to middle-road radio. No telling what gems you would hear.
Loved the "Station of the Stars." Still have my WPEN Card.
That's beautiful music sounds great thanks 👍👍❤❤🎶🎵🎶🎵🎶💙🤍💗💛🕊️😎
I never had heard this song until now. It's so beautiful and sad and says so well what so many of us have experienced.
The. Best song never to be recorded as a single by the lovely Eve Graham of the New Seekers..
wow thats fantastic,,, i love this song so thank your father for bringing so much joy.....it brings back those feelings and memories that only people of my age can enjoy
Just flicked over to the Cher version and come back halfway through. Hands down, Eve Graham all day long. Would like to have heard this done by Donnie Munro.
the greatest song for people who feel down...
Brillant song and brillant voice.
Wow. This song just does it and explains it.
This is a very good brilliant song that everyone can join in with.
Even those who don't like it.
O wait they can't because they don't understand what a great brilliant song like this means and is about.
They ignore and never learn the meaning as many of us who do.
The greatest song i ever heard.
Now that's a powerful song and what a voice.
Eve's voice hypnotizes. A voice like no other !
Great song. Ive never heard this. Yet, it brings back memories and pain from that time.
Boy, talk about if the shoe fits!
It's also my favourite New Seekers song. I was in my teens and went down to Wallach's Music City in Hollywood to find the 45 RPM single record.
They sang this song on the Mike Douglas Show at Sea World in Ohio. My mom loved it and was one of her favorites.
The New Seekers will always be favourite group.I had a crush on Peter Doyle.Luckily I got to see them perform at Chatham central hall a wonderful memory.
wonderful song. loved since childhood.
hits you right in the heart, brilliant song, sang only how eve could
Why oh why was this gem of a record never released as a single by Polydor back in '73, it would have been a monster
The title says it all for me, and Eve Graham....the greatest voice I ever heard. Thanks so much for the video.
Shiloh Morning also sang this, and their version is almost identical. Beautiful.
The saddest song I've ever heard....
My favourite New Seekers song - thanks - love the pcitures too. Davidx
In the U.S.A. "The Greatest Song I Ever Heard" was released as a single on the MGM label in 1973. I own it and went to Wallich's Music City in Hollywood to buy it.
I bought the single in my city in Kentucky. I loved it the first time I heard it on our local AM rock station. Eve's vocal is sheer perfection!
One of my favourites....thank you, from the bottom of my heart..
Peace, Love & Joy

I think this is the best of Eve Graham or perhaps the greatest song of New Seekers, but I love Lyn too.
Think of Cher and The New Seekers singing this classic together.
Wow that would be some performance.
That would be The Greatest Song I've ever heard.
Wonderful Song !
Have just found this superb song on an old Cher record!!
At first I thought this was an ABBA song I was listening to.
wow, what an honor. your father is obviously a very talented man
Their best, in my opinion
this song was playing in my head this morning hehe i forgot what the name of it was thnx for posting:}
Never have heard this song before. I like it very much and the video shots too> Thanks for posting.
By the original New Seekers line up, and featuring the great voice of Eve Graham. Beautiful song
Have come across this record by chance while looking for New Seekers records. Tried to download it, but it seems due to a contractual problem in the UK, it was never released, if im wrong please let me know. But one thing for sure, Eve Graham and the New Seekers have sung it to perfection.
Just such a perfectly sung song for some of the prettiest lyrics ever penned.
And I could listen to this pretty song until, until, my days may end.

The more I hear this fantastic song I wonder why why why wasn't it realesed as a single in the UK. Anyone know?
Because they show such ignorance to Real true great brilliant songs. That's why.
Always showing and they even proved just how many trash rubbish garbage they always have time and understanding for.
Lack of knowledge and very poor understanding that is.
But when it comes to real true classics like this. They have no time or knowledge of understanding.
It'll be nice to hear the flip side of this song (The Greatest Song I've ever Heard), A Woman Grows.
Cher’s isn’t nearly as beautiful as this is !
香港仔,正!
Cantonese Version:
葛劍青 - 少女的春夢 (1975)
Thank you for this. Do you know if it is uploaded anywhere to RUclips? I'm very interested in western music that was covered in Cantonese (or Mandarin) in the 70s and 80s.
Got a weird feeling on hearing so many superlative adjectives in the song.
Also done many moons ago by Cher !
Perhaps in one's own mind's eye. Whoo composed this? Solid concept but the music perhaps was overtaken by the late 70's or early 80's. Much apologies for this era.
You should definitely listen to more music...
And you got this gem from "The Idiot's Guide to Generic Insults"?
@@Tawroset Only an idiot can't tell advice from an insult...
I like Cher's version
As poignant as a song could be.
This is a very nice rendition of this song, but I think Cher's version was better
Thanks for posting this song. I thought I was the only one who remembered it!
I heard this song in the 70’s .. couldn’t find it anywhere but never forgot it .. so glad I finally found it on RUclips 💕
