Thanks for watching!
I'm now a distributor for Alexseal and can ship anywhere in the Continental US! Check it out! www.millerboatworks.com
Did you use the roll additive on the first panel?
Thank you for your blog post on calculating how much material is needed for a painting project. I was on the verge of buying 3 times more paint than needed!!!
That’s our boat! Thank you, Andy, for all your help and advice to my husband over the winter. He is never afraid to learn and try something he’s never done before, plus he’s a perfectionist. A successful lifelong combination for him, and a great outcome.
He really did a fantastic job ;-)!
Nice boat! Your hubs should be proud of his work.
Did he roll and tip or only roll? Curious minds wanna know...
Or did I miss that in the vid?
KJac Only rolled. He wasn’t having much luck with tipping.
it looked great
Thank you for making this video. I am impressed on how well this paint leveled off
wow, just what I was looking for. Bob Ross and you Andy are wonderful to watch.
Very impressive results from rolling out the paint. Gregg's boat looks fantastic. Great job!
Rolling only sounds like a solid approach for my project! Thanks for this demo!
Excellent presentation of both the how and why elements of this process. It's good to know the how but the why sets the technique into memory like nothing else. Well done!
From an old guy (70) and second generation painter& 50 years experience who has done just about all paint applications with materials of whatever you can think of. I gotta say you sure do know your stuff. Good video
That looks amazing, I will definitely be using this paint for my restoration.
Wish we had these videos of yours back in the day when I was working on boats
Wow !! Very impressive results! Thanks for sharing !
Great job on all the surface prep and explanations!!! Fantastic, I’m getting ready to paint our yacht for the second time in 16 years!
Thanks brother!
Always great advice. Using Alexseal products on my 88 proline. Getting close to top coat.
Thank you for a very informative video, and the series I have watched with your knowledge. As a complete novice in these areas of glassing and painting, and generally what to look for and how to do it, RUclips has been invaluable. Your channel is one of the ones I have subscribed to.
That Alexseal stuff looks great!! and the rolled only side as well! Very impressed...well especially when it's applied by an expert. Thanks very much for sharing that, guess i'm going to use that stuff on my boat!!
Andy, your painting skills are amazing. Bob Ross would be proud. Perfect.
Thanks for posting, bought my Alexseal primer and paint because of this video, just applied primer to just a few spots for practicing and will try sanding and paint on same spots tomorrow, great post to learn as this is my first boat and restoring job for DIY projects
Another fantastic video Andy! I will be using this product, rolled only, on my Compac 23 refit. Thanks!
Finally how to tip and roll paint technique. Thanks. I now know I can do this. And I appreciate you telling what kind of roller you used and all the great hints.
Andy, outstanding tutorial. I am new to this, but I think you have empowered me. I was on Alexseal's website and I think I can do this! I have an older Wellcraft and she needs new colors! Thank you sir!
i just found out my top paint is alexseal and it needs some repairs - i have been watching you for so long and now you have some really good how to vids just for me!
Thanks for the demo, you teach the DIYer that it can be done and not to be optimist to try something new. Sound like a great paint to try.
Thinking about doing a small boat. Great Video! Extremely well done!
I have just started a refit of my 1973 Grand Banks 36. I have a looooong way to go, but watching you gives me hope. Thanks Andy.
How I wish this would have come sooner! I waited for you to come home with the scoop on Alexseal and ended up running out of time and bought a different brand that is a spray only application. Well,,,,,,, i ran into a problem with millions of little nats landing in the paint so I am actually in the process of building another bigger barn to spray the boat in. I could have taken the boat to a buddys and rolled this gold in his barn and been on the lake!😁
Thanks a million for what you do, great stuff!
I appreciate the information, I am always learning from you. Going to paint the traveller on my sailboat w/ Alexseal.
Wow, that rolled only surface is very impressive! I think I'll give it a shot.
Both techniques looks good.
Fantastic video Andy, thanks for sharing!!
Wow, that is an impressive outcome.
Fantastic to know this due to the fact I’m in the process of restoring my boat and I have been looking to roll on instead of spraying, I just have a little bit more preparation and then will be ready for paint, using my ole gel coat as a base or primer since it’s so old and underneath the epoxy I have already taking off.
Thank you very much for this. I hate to paint, and if all I had to do was roll, then I think I'd be good. I'm also not a 'pretty boat' kinda guy and 'good enough' is what I am for.
I'm going to build an instrument panel for my binnacle soon, that will be a good time to practice my fiberglass and finishing work. Thanks for all you've shown us.
How in the world can anyone downvote you? Your time, energy, cost of supplies, and knowledge is being supplied to us for free. For me, this vid is very helpful. I am about to start painting my 1998 Nitro bass boat and was trying to figure out if I should roll, roll & Tip, or just spray with an hvlp gun. I am using the Rustoleum Topside paint from Lowes, so it actually seems like I should roll and just leave it be, otherwise use the hvlp but major prep for overspray since there are so many curves and lids on the boat. Either way, thanks for taking the time to do this for us, learned a lot!
Wow! Amazing results from using a roller!?!
Unbelievable. I will be looking into Alexseal for a Catalina 25 project I believed impossible for me to do by myself.
I want a black hull, yes black.
And yes, I know I will see every single imperfection as though it was under a magnifying glass. Lol.
New subscriber btw.
I used to paint cars for a living back in the 80's, so I have clue what it takes but things have come quite a ways looks like.
I just might get into it again.
Great work!
Fantastic tips - pre cleaning brushes and rollers has saved me so many headaches - I start with a vacuum as my first step ( special clean nozzle used only on brushes and rollers)
I can't thank you enough for your videos. As a 1st time boat owner beginning to work on a recently purchased 1977 Montauk 17, you've been a tremendous resource. The boat has suffered from shabby DIY jobs (ex: using plastic anchor plugs to rectify stripped screws in the hull). While I'm pretty handy, you've made me comfortable with a number of decisions including: paint or gel and fixing holes, among others. I wish you did electrical because it's a bird nest?! I'm not looking for perfection, but after following you I know it will look a lot better when I'm (we're?) done!
always such great and informative videos! Excellent.
Looks good and thanks for sharing. Definitely going to be using this on my classic mako 20
This is awesome. I have a 93 172 scout sport fish that’s never been stored inside, has been slipped the vast majority of its life with something like 6200 working hours.
Watching a lot of your vids makes me confident to bring it back and keep it around for awhile.
This also helps with my 70’s lund 315 project.
Thanks Andy I think im ready to paint my cockpit now!
You sold me on the Alexseal
(Stars & Stripes).
Even though this wasn't a sales pitch?
Admire your work, always.
Very impressive paint, and a great demo!!!
Dude u are awsome i dont even own a boat wish i did but i still watch your stuf cause u kno how to do it right ,and show the masses how to ,
Impressive! I'll keep that in mind for when I need to paint my boat!
I'm sold. Carpe Diem!
SV Coma Key is going to be gorgeous.
great video. back rolling is also called "laying off" the coat. one thing that we did when we finished painted/epoxy on floors and related, was to use a clean roller with reducer only to lay off the surface. might work better but it is an extra step
Thank you for the tips, and lessons. We have a 'piece of yard art'that needs some TLC,and I think this roll method will save my sanity. What little is left anyway.
As with the other video’s, some really good information here! I am fixing up a 1954 12 ft boat as my first time boat project, and I have found most of the things I needed to know about fibreglass repair and painting on this channel! Keep it going and thanks so much!
back in the late 80s a friend met a paint retailer at the Daytona fl flea market and was impressed by his product. this paint looks the same, water thin, roll and tip. we painted his 45' 30ton ketch in a quiet cove in the Bahamas while in the water from a 13' inflatable. three people in all, one rolled, one tipped and one to control the dingy. the finish was very impressive, ease of useand after 10 years compounded back to a wonderful shine.
Thanks for your AWESOME (time consuming) demo for us. I am going to use this to paint the bottom trim of my Fiberglass SUV (Mazda Tribute) in which I have tried 4 times to recover/remodel as it is 20 years old. (all the cr*p they say works, DID NOT (Bumper Recoat, Bumper Rejuvinate, Bumper Coat, Auto paint (that was a test) and all chip off or do not stay - huge waste of time. So I thought, what is a tougher paint - Hello Boat painting is what I searched for, so thanks a MILLION!
I am almost ready to start tearing wood off of one of my boats. Selling a mast and some winches to raise funds for the restoration project. Loved this one.
Great demo as always. Thank you
Awesome idea using the tape on the roller. I've always 'assumed'... I'm in the middle of a 23' Mako restoration and currently painting! Almost there. I have two coats of Petit Ezpoxy "Bikini Blue" on the hull and I must say, I am really pleased with the results. I've been tipping side-to-side (as some other vids demonstrated), BUT I wish I saw this video!!! Yup, sagging, brushing impressions even with a 10-15% thin.. The vertical direction makes so much more sense. I will apply the last coat using this vertical stroke method and see if I can tell differences. ALWAYS appreciate your time with these How-To's, I know it takes time. Enjoy your family and weeks to come!
Dope video again. Thanks. That’s dudes boat looked amazing. Im going for it.
Very good episode..thx for the education..👍🏼🇧🇲
I watched this video before my second coat of paint and incorporated the downward finish strokes What a difference no visible lines left. all....looks like glass thanks!
I am about to pick up a 1972 -18 footer. The white paint on it looks ok, I just want to paint some side trim and too trim.
I feel confident now of doing myself, thanks for your videos, you should have your own school
We have used Alexseal on our 60' charter catamarans we build for the last ten years. We roll (no tipping) the hulls and spray small parts (masts, booms, etc). Easy to repaint and buff to look new after years. One cat is seven years old with same paint and a buff this year...looks new. We use Home Depot "Best" white 6" rollers. Use a good respirator.
I repaired awlgrip and was able to wet sand and buff. Turned out great. 1500 and 2000 grit.
Great video. Thanks for sharing
You are making it look much easier than it is! But thanks again for the awesome video and teachings.
As always very informative
Awesome vid. Many thanks for the effort
Nice video. I do the final rolling out starting one side and a term I use is "lead with the arm". In other words the side of the roller with the frame on is the lead edge and the free edge is the trailing edge.
Great video Andy!
thank you for the lesson man!
Their website makes it sound like the best. WIll have to try it one day.
Great video, thanks for sharing. I did the roller than lightly rolled in the order direction to break the bubbles and it worked great on the non skid on the floor. I'm surprised you were not wearing a mask ;)
So very cool results. I have always tipped out with a foam brush. Just to keep possible brush hairs out. That paint is very impressive. Tips out well and rolls out well. An extra 5% reducer couldn't hurt especially in the heat. My one comment for future advice to your viewers is to start painting early in the morning and in the coolest weather possible for the paint type and or factory recommendations. Direct sun light will evaporate the reducer more, cure the paint faster and possibly cause chatter and orange peel. Spent a few years in your line of work and laid up several hundred gallons of Varnish on classic runabouts like the Christ Crafts and Gar woods. I found my best flowing results were in the morning in 50 to 60 degree weather. Varnish in the summer was difficult especially outdoors. Always used alot more marine grade penetrol to help it flow out but at a great risk of sags and curtains in the bright work. Cool chanel by the way.
You always make it look so easy!
Great vid as always, Thankyou
all your video are great thank you so much help you give to us big THANKS
Good job as always
Nice video. I tipped once and found out that if your doing it outside you need low humidity. I found best to paint in am as dew rises. It was around 8 to 1030am for me.
Thanks for helpful tips
Awesome videos. I will be giving it a go soon.
I have to admit, i was getting a little bored with these product testing vids however, this one made it worth while. I'm very impressed with how the rolled out panel turned out. Thanks Andy!
P.s. I'll learn patience one day.
Joseph K learn patience - which RUclips video is that?
Best rolling and tipping video I've seen
Love your videos Andy
Another great episode Andy...and look at that...you're closing in on 100K subscribers!!! Now to get some of your subscribers over to Sail Life and Mads!!!
I enjoy learning from you. I wish you would show how to fix big holes. We bought a boat that went through Harvey. We lived 850ml. away when we got there it had really big holes in it. The local boat workers wanted 8000 we just can't afford that. They are fixing a lot of these. Our old girl is a 32ft. J sailboat with a double Hull. Most holes only went through outer Hull but was told that I would need to cut the inner out and repair from the inside out. Then repair the inner hull. This is something I would like to learn anyway and I know quite a few of these boat's are being fixed. Thank you
Nice finish
Awesome as always! Hull paint... here I come
Wow....that turned out nice, very nice! I know this was a learning video for me but i'd really like your opinion on the final look, i know it's sometimes different in the video as compared to what you actually see. The video sure looked like the rolling only approach worked pretty darn good? I'd like to think i'm a perfectionist, but man those two finished looked pretty darn close. Awesome and thanks for sharing!
Great Video!
Wow what a difference from the wet to the dry finish
Well done Andy another great video, always find little gems in all you do. Don't understand why your not in the 200k range.
That's a beautiful Hatteras, now I can't figure out what to do with the 15k I was gonna spend on a paint job! Great video
Give it to me for my 150 dollar boat. Lol. I think a lot of us wish to have that problem. Must be a damn nice boat.
Hey man I love you videos, always very informational. I had a couple questions about the product you were using. 1. Is the paint a final stage or do you still need to add a clear gel coat after? And if no gel coat is needed can you sand out imperfections and buff out?
Looks great
very helpful thank you
Good luck getting to 100,000 subscribers!
How long do you wait between coats doing this? I used the roll
and roll like the first panel you did. After one coat I can tell I will need at least one more possibly two. Thank you for showing us all your handy works and taking time to explain each step. My old boat already looks much better!
I love to see 2 more coats and a color sand with polish!
Great job
Hello, Thanks for all of the videos! I am about to paint my boat with all of the steps you laid out in these 2 videos. With Alexseal, do I have to paint the whole boat in one sitting? Or can I break it up into a few days? The next question is, how do I continue painting where I left off? Do I have to sand and overlap in areas? Or do full panels of the boat have to be done in one roll? Thanks!
Andy is the greatest !
I’m soooooo glad I saw this video! I am planning on painting out 23 year old boat (we’ve had it 4 years) this year and coming from the car business where I learned to wet sand and buff cars many moons ago it’s what I’d expect on a quality boat finish as well.
So can you wet sand and buff this paint as suggested towards the beginning your video? And can you do a repair and repaint the repaired section without repainting the entire boat?
I didn’t hear you mention this except in the beginning of the video about this paint “checking off all the boxes”?
Great info.....
Great product. Looked better off the roller than the brush!!
I worked in the industrial coating industry for a bit. The guys would tack a piece of duct tape to the bench and hold it off the edge. Then they would pass the roller over (under) the sticky side of the tape to remove lint, etc. from the roller cover.
