HBO released the "Inside the Episode" for the series finale as a double-sized video on the Blu-ray set, titled "Duty is the Death of Love". This is a supercut of just the parts where Benioff & Weiss talk about their storywriting decisions - the whole thing is 30 minutes long, but I cut out all of the extraneous parts where cast members say "it was great" (redundant) or where the production team talks about how they physically built the sets and props. This contains ALL clips of Benioff & Weiss talking about story decisions, not just a select few.

Word. Both in-universe and out. Like, if Jon just can't keep his parentage secret from his sisters, why is he okay with lying to them that Dany would only help in exchange for his bending the knee, when that's literally not how the sequence of events we saw in Episode 6 of Season 7 went?

season 3 was when the red wedding happened and it was the response to that when they realized that their policy was one of subverting expectations and having multiple red weddings every season. I can't find the interview at the moment but there is one out there from season 4 of Weiss saying they wanted more red weddings.

DnD: We totally came up with this idea back when you all were wondering about what we would do when we ran out of book materials. Also, we came up with this idea back when we were planning the last season. GRRM doesn't plan things out so neither should we. Of course everything made sense. Look at how subtle we are! We destroyed the symbol of Westerosi monarchy and replaced it with more monarchy...but we got some cool people sitting on that council. You gotta respect the cool kids table. “They listened to ideas from other people.” That seems to contradict what they admitted in their last interview regarding the show... The fact that they admitted seeing, “no value,” in listening to fan opinions of the show or hiring anyone else to write for the show speaks volumes on their asinine choices. If they had bothered to listen to anyone else, they probably would have been reminded of the various plot holes they presented and never completed. Or maybe they should have taken up HBO’s multiple offers to pay for more episodes/ seasons and a writing TEAM so that they could focus on other projects and it not effect the outcome of the show. They could have easily spent more time developing Deanery’s flip into madness. I think fans are so angry because the more we learn about the final season, the more we discover that D&D were given multiple chances of help from HBO- they were literally throwing money at them by Season 7- but D&D didn’t want anyone else to get credit for their work. So, they refused help at every turn. They refused to hear feedback from anyone involved with production and refused to give the reins over to someone else- even though they were both over the show. This could have all been prevented, and we could have gotten an ending worthy of the endeavors they set out to depict...but their ego’s got in the way.

The fact they're admitting this was all of their idea and not an outline by GRRM for all of this (except Bran being King) makes this both worse and also makes more sense.
And somehow I doubt they decided on all of this at S3. Probably the same time they made their decision about Arya.
It was all clearly rushed, not properly planned and that is indeed trademark DD.

However... they didn't admit fault to anything here. Nothing. They never will, either. They are stating as fact that it was their brilliant idea "probably around season 3" to make significant changes to plots and character arcs because they liked a certain actor or thought it would make more exciting twists/shock. They've not taken any sort of criticism in person and made a decent response. They've repeatedly deflected to cast members instead or avoided altogether.

@@tupimpacaterpillar3516 So they're "Creators," but we can't call them out when what they created makes no sense and is patently absurd, because they ran out of source material? That's not a defense, it's an acknowledgment that they're creatively bankrupt, and can only make something good when they have an instruction manual and a LOT of talented help behind the scenes. And it's extremely arrogant of you to claim you understand the intentions for every character when multiple actors from the show have publicly stated that they don't know what their characters were doing after Season 4.
BTW, I'm sick of the "They ran out of source material" excuse, because that's a GROSS misrepresentation of the facts. The first four seasons (the good ones) were adapted from the first three books. They still had two full books of material, and burned through it in a single season. That should have sustained them for at least three more seasons, given that it includes an entirely separate Invasion of Westeros story arc that D&D completely ignored.

@@tupimpacaterpillar3516 Rhaegal's Death. Overlooking the "Dany forgot about the Iron Fleet" absurdity, overlooking the idea that she didn't leave any caretakers who could've alerted her to the ambush, ignoring how on a clear day like that she and her forces should've had 20+ miles of visibility to spot Euron's ships long before they did, and ignoring how Euron and his men could've hit Rhagal 3/3, when they had ABSOLUTELY NO MEANS TO PRACICE ANTI-AIR GUNNERY BEFOREHAND, the scene is so poorly constructed that it was, Literally, a physical impossibility. I'm serious, please follow along:
Those giant scorpions are effectively giant crossbows. Same projectile fired each time, same draw-length (power setting). The only way to get maximum projectile range is to fire at 45 degree angle relative to the ground (or in this case, the ocean). I did some math based on my estimates of the scorpion's size, base on the fact that the Euron actor is exactly six feet tall. That gave me a length for the scorpion of 15 feet, with the bolt head 10.6 feet above the deck at a 45 degree angle, which all looks kosher to my eye upon re-watching the scene.
Why is this important? Because, when Euron's forces fire their SECOND volley of bolts at Drogon, they arc up, level off at around the height Rhaegal was at when he was hit, then start falling back down not long after passing Dany's fleet. This proves that those weapons, AT BEST, barely had the range to hit Rhaegal FROM THE CLOSER FIRING LOCATION. They fired at Rhaegal from at least 500 feet Further away (based on my estimate that the ships are about 100 feet long). This proves that the shots that felled Rhaegal were fired from BEYOND THE WEAPONS RANGE.
Call this overly technical, but it's pertinent. Weiss said in the behind the scenes for episode 5 that the events depicted there were the direct result of this scene; Rhagal's death, and Missandei's capture and subsequent murder. Therefore, Rhagal's death scene had to make sense in order to form the basis for EVERY SUBSEQUENT EVENT. Instead, it is so poorly conceived and executed as to not only be nonsensical, but to defy the laws of physics.
P.S., I notice that you didn't address the fact that they burned through 2 books in 1 season. Funny how I've yet to hear anyone express any kind of argument in defense of that decision, coherent or otherwise.

The final episode was so horrible because Benioff and Weiss used it as an opportunity for them to learn on the job about film making, these clowns had no idea what they were doing as showrunners, writers, or especially as directors! A real showrunner would have tasked the series very best director with it or planned it out methodically shot by shot before shooting it, not used it as an opportunity for them to use it as film school! I heard that they had to pull the budget from other episodes in Season 8 to put toward episode 6 because Douche & Douche had not planned it out correctly and overshot everything trying to figure out what they needed. Vince Gilligan was able to pull off directing the final episode of Breaking Bad himself, but he is on a whole other level than Douche & Douche (aka Benioff and Weiss) because he actually knew his characters motivations. And also Vince Gilligan did not predetermine the ending of the show 6 years before it actually ended (or 3 years depending on if you believe D&D's bull story), he actually worked with the writers, producers, and ACTORS to organically write and end the show with the proper momentum, style, and completeness it deserved as the show progressed through its natural life cycle. One other thing, you can totally read the BS on Benioff and Weiss in these interviews, they are not being truthful when they explain how they came up with story, they are shifty dishonest people, especially Benioff, you can see it in his eyes and how he holds his head tilted and angled...total lying plagiarizing POS, sorry man, had to say it, we know how he copied that Arya knife trick from a couple other shows too, totally un-original and lame scene--the Night King would have crushed her little neck the moment he grabbed her too. You know what the worst part of Season 8 is?
It's not the plot holes. It's not the final fates of each character being unearned & unjustified. It's not the visible cutting of corners in both the storytelling and the cinematography - leading to situations like the Starbucks cup. It's not entire characters being ruined just to force certain outcomes to happen. It's not the cast basically being as devastated as the fans were at the outcome of this season. It's not even that the season was just... bad
The worst part is that D&D fucked this off _on purpose._
What I mean is... there have been bad endings in media before. Lost, Mass Effect 3, The Sopranos, the final Star Wars trilogy, etc. And they've all had their various outrages and postmortems. But one thing you can't say about each of those is that the creative leads didn't try. Everyone has their own idea on what makes a good story & how to end it. Sometimes, the creative vision doesn't match that of fans' expectations. And that's fine. But they were all trying to make the best piece of art they could. They wanted these things - the works of art they've dedicated whole portions of their lives to, and invested millions of dollars into - to be as good as any other classic piece of media. And it didn't work out. It happens.
With GoT... D&D were over it and just stopped caring. And you can see their lack of care throughout Season 8. Now, this isn't the first time creative leads stopped caring about the works they were in charge of. But that's why you usually have teams of writers; so that if the original creative leads stopped actively caring, you can have them fuck off to other things and promote someone on the writing team to keep the continuity going. D&D, on the other hand, were just too selfish to see anyone else's name on this project but theirs - even though they were increasingly ambivalent to even running the show.
So they fucked it off. Not because they thought this was the best way the story should end. Not because they wanted to make something good. And not because they had some sort of conflict with the network - hell, HBO did everything they could to save this.
But simply because D&D thought they had better shit to do & wanted to speed things up so they could fuck up Star Wars & make a fanfiction about the Confederacy.

Since money is no object and GOT is the most popular show on TV, they could have easily hired some of the best tv writers in Los Angeles (Mazin, Espenson, Gilligan, Waller-Bridge) and had a six week room to beat out the final six episodes. How amazing would that have been? TV is a team effort. One doesn't need to have all of the answers. One just needs to be humble enough to recognize their own failings and ask for assistance. If "they" knew since season 3 that's where "they" were going to go then why in the Seven Hells didn't "they" set it up properly so it was a logical conclusion instead of an out pf nowhere "shock factor" scene? 🤔 Also, if they knew in 2016 they were going to have Arya kill Night King then why did they invest so much time in setting Jon up as the one who was going to do it? The Night King doesn't even exist in the books (GRRM has said that the Night's King is only a historical figure)
Ser David of house Friedman & Ser Daniel of house Weiss, I name you liars!

Also when jon kill his queen , his fans expected him to be made king, only for jon to be sent to the wall and to never father any children again. What a disappointing end for Jon, reduced to "she my queen, Donny's ma queen, I don't want it". I don't expect Arya or jon to kill the night king if we see him in the books, Danys Azor ahai and that obvious for everyone to see.

2016 would have been the shooting of Season 7. DD has done videos basically bringing a theory that S8 was probably going to be very different, but the writers decided late in the game to change it. I buy that theory, there's evidence that makes it feasible (Cersei miscarriage scene cut, other cuts, the Daenerys/Jon baby foreshadowing that went nowhere after Wiess basically commented indicating it would happen...)
So I think the books will be very different. Bran may end up king, but everything else will probably be quite different.

GRRM might, in fact, have told them more about the ending than Bran being King BUT DnD surely elected to ignore it. Why? Between season 7 leaking online, their stupid desire of providing the audiences with a twist- pay off as big as the red wedding and their overall biased incompetence, they miscalculated. It is not as much as they trying to take credit to something that GRRM came up with, but they actually trying to convince themselves that Game of Thrones was nor Martin´s story anymore, but theirs. Personally, I believe D&D claiming Bran will be "the final king" (as in: king of Westeros) was something they were told by GRRM is another load of bullshit. They did it in the past too, hiding behind "oh, but GRRM told us!" and then ripping it out of context completely (see the Sansa rape. Yes, GRRM wrote that storyline, but it happened to a completely different character under different circumstances). Bran has zero connections to the Iron Throne. His whole storyline is about the North. He was born a North, he is technically the Lord of Winterfell. No character has travelled as far North as he did, and he is about to uncover all the secrets of the North. And you are telling me he is going to become the king of the SOUTH? Apart from that, I don't even think there will be an Iron Throne in the end. I can see him in an advisor position like Bloodraven was. Or maybe become the king in the North. But Bran king of Westeros is another ripped-out-of-context fantasy produced by these two hax.

I know that people said they believed D&D didn't care but here's the thing: I actually think it goes a little beyond not caring - I think they liked being in charge.
There is an interview where they talk about Sir Barristans exit where they talk about how the actor (A big fan of the books) had written them a letter explaining why Sir Barristan should stay (because he was still in the books and killing him off created narrative holes) and D&D stated that this just made them want to kill him off even more.
Jaime Lannisters actor also said that from season 5 onwards, he started quizzing them about narrative choices about Jaime and what he was doing, and they told him to just shut up and read the lines. Peter Dinklage went on record saying the crypt scene was stupid in an interview, Emilia Clarke said she felt Dany's turn was nonsensical... Vary's actor also expressed annoyance at how he was killed off...
The thing is, these actors all cared, and I don't think it's a stretch of the imagination to assume that behind the scenes they were probably pissed off beyond all doubt with what D&D were doing in season 8.
The thing is, when you look at scenes in seasons 1, 2 and 3, there are a lot of scenes that weren't in the book (like that scene with Robert and Cersei) and were written by D&D, and they're great. That says to me they can write great scenes with great dialogue when they want to.
However, in Season 8... the whole thing is either boring, stupid, or disrespectful to the source material. There's so few actual good moments, and certain lines - that line for example about Jaime not caring about the innocences - that is a line that they could have cut so easily. Yet they threw it in there, and it completely massacres Jaimes character. I can imagine the actor trying desperately to stop them from putting it in the show based on what he's said in interviews and he obviously didn't win out even though he could have made a great argument that it completely destroys his character. The fact that line made the cut is baffling to me.
The conclusion? I can't help but feel like they did that on purpose - and the sheer amount of times they pulled some awful narrative and dialogue choices made me feel like this went beyond not caring. I think they let feuds behind the scenes impact the writing. For me, it's the only explanation because even if they weren't getting any writers on board, they clearly had some feedback when doing this from the actors and they chose to ignore all of it.
It wasn't lack of care - it was sabotage.

They look like teenagers who couldn't pass pre-school, emotionally.

I am watching this again due to a recommendation in your latest video about the archived WGA script that shows that Dany's end was changed drastically.
It seems to me when these men discuss what they think is the climax of the show: i.e. Dany's dead body being carried away by Drogon, watched by a confused Jon Snow, that if they had any inkling of how Martin would end the series that would be it. That would be a very Martin style ending, no explanation, no "six months later" no trial or king. Just end with that.
But I am by no means saying this is the end that Martin told them. Even this video shows that this is an ending that *they* came up with, and it is not the ending Martin has envisioned. The point I am making is that their grasp of the source material and the author's mind is so poor, that they couldn't even get it right accidentally, they come up with a very Martin like ending but then they have to tack on more stuff and pad the ending with pointless long shots of Tyrion arranging chairs.
I am not saying that an ending where it ends with Drogon flying away isn't a good ending, I am saying that it is more in line with Martin's style. Look at Dying of the Light or A Song for Lya or many other stories. You don't really know what happens after Martin fades to black, but it raises interesting questions.

Rereading the books, I SMH at how much is wasted. There's a prophecy from Maggy the Frog about Sansa "slaying a savage giant in a castle built of snow".
So again I have to ask, did these actors EVER read the books? Read more than just their characters parts? If they did, they wouldn't just take D&D's word on things & they would've fought harder (I'd like to believe) for the integrity of their characters & the storylines.
Ugh, such wasted potential. All of it. 🙃

Hi, I was wondering if you could post the full featurette including the production parts because HBO blocked out and eventually deleted the 6th episode when it came out 3 years ago and since then no one has been able to find it, it's no even on their RUclips channel
A great deal of people haven't watched the series on Blu-Ray but it's one of the most important game revealed and I'm sure a lot of people are interested in seeing it, and you're the only video I was able to find that has moments from it!

They never released it online in the first place. They did release it on the Blu Ray. I made notes on the production parts and put them in the wiki. These are all the Benioff & Weiss parts. You can tell it was intended to be the Inside the Episode interview, but they never released it, then just re-cut it with other production stuff.

Obviously, being a devoted fan of Game of Thrones and understanding the minds of these two showrunners will always make me look at how others pile over Dan and David with rejection and judgement as bullshit.
Sad. I wonder when this bullshit will this end?

Thanks for this. Now, please view this GRRM interview alongside:
    ruclips.net/video/SjDentEr9c4/видео.html
    I have 2 questions:
(1)Why, even *now,* is GRRM refusing to throw The Two Frauds under the bus? Or even utter a *breath* of criticism?
(2)In his interview, GRRM says he agreed "the major beats" with The Two Frauds. How on earth is Stannis not a "major beat"? How on earth is the existence (TV) or non-existence (books) of the Night King not a "major beat"?
On (1)_ before anyone says "Oh he can't speak, cos of money, and prequels", etc _ No: I don't buy that.
The Two Frauds are gone from HBO and ASOIAF-world (thank God), so no prob on the prequels.
And it is *NOT* true that writers simply fume in silence when screen adaptations don't please them: Stephen King was critical of Kubrick's film of "The Shining", and had no inhibitions about saying so publicly.
I'm not asking GRRM to crap on their heads (much though I would love that). There are plenty of ways to politely rebuke them.
Well anyway, you may all disagree, but that's my opinion.
Dragon Demands, thanks again for the video _ and all your work, though unfortunately I don't get time to see it all.
You've certainly been vindicated by how the TV series turned out, and I speak as someone who was prepared to defend it up to the end of Season 5.

all respect to your great efforts but E7 & E8 cannot be understandable, you cannot get mad and burn the city after surrounded, after everything Dani did to the slaves and to the cities she freed. Jon is not a traitor, he cannot kill his queen, beloved and aunt only because of one conversation with Tyrion or with Dani herself. The ends simply contradicts with the plot and with all story

Not of the North, not of the nonsense illogical Six Kingdoms. No he becomes the permanent king of the Lands of Ever Winter and of all that is beyond the remnants of the long since fallen wall.

I still think that the seven kingdoms will dissolve into 8 or nine separate kingdoms but with much better international relations than before the conquest, there was so much stuff they cut out before they ran out of material that it would be impossible for them to create the same story on TV that George is telling, and that is before you factor in their bad story telling skills. While there may be individual pieces in the same position it will ultimately be an unrecognizable story
