Exclusive report on the filming script for Game of Thrones Season 8 episode 5 "The Bells", officially archived at the Writer's Guild of America Foundation in Los Angeles, reveals that "Mad Queen Daenerys" WAS NOT the "Real Ending" that they were building towards for years...it isn't even what they originally intended for Season 8 itself. The final, on-screen version is significantly different from the filming script - explaining why Emilia Clarke's comments in other behind the scenes videos seem to be describing an episode that doesn't exist. It's because all she had to go on was the original filming script from the initial Season 8 table read back in October 2017. The showrunners hid the changes from Emilia Clarke.

This is terrible, for the showrunners to have Emilia Clarke be kept in the dark like this. I still remember that time a year ago when the show has just recently ended, how Emilia looked really tired and emotionally drained trying to explain and justify the decisions made for character, while D&D and others kept throwing her under the bus for stupid stuff like the Coffee Cup Gate. They should have had their actresses and actors' backs, and taken responsibility for their failures ! I felt so bad for her, like, I could tell Emilia really loved playing Daenerys, it was the role of her life and she brought this iconic character wonderfully to life on TV screen, contributing to this show's huge success.
I have a question: Do you think they only kept Daenerys' illogical burning of King's Landing from Emilia, and if yes for how long? I remember her saying that after reading the season 8 script, she was so shocked about what happens to her character and that she had to walk it off through the city for an hour. She also said Daenerys' final arc "f***d her up" and that she is heartbroken that people will remember her character like this. Could be that she's referring to Jon killing her and her having a faschist speech or something, though.

@@Bllll957 Likely, not to mention the tremendous life-change that the end of an 8-year run would be in the best of scenarios for young actors who’ve largely built their careers on the gig. They didn’t need this shit. I think it’s a real possibility that we never know the full extent of what happened behind the scenes from the cast’s POV.
It’s like a cult of professional trade-silence. It’s often been considered a professional courtesy to keep issues in-house which has obviously been exploited by a lot of people to get away with some really heinous shit over the years, but even to a lesser extent earnest appraisals or comments from actors have been met with pushback from people in the industry.
The one example that comes to me off the top of my head is when Shia LaBeouf voiced his dissatisfaction with how the latest Indiana Jones film turned out, the rest of the cast and Spielberg lambasted him for it, with Harrison Ford saying something to the effect of “There’s a time to tell the truth and a time to sell used cars, and Shia was supposed to sell used cars.” Which is actually pretty ironic since that statement equates the film to a “used car” that needs its quality embellished. Guess the cat was out of the bag by that point.
Additionally, I think maybe the younger members of the cast might feel like they owe D&D a deal of loyalty for how the show boosted their careers - regardless of how much they might actually deserve it. I could totally understand that mindset even if I disagree with it. From off-hand comments we can piece together a general feel of how things went but I’d be interested to see something more in-depth come out eventually, an interview or something like that.

Nor do I think Jon will be as useless as he was during Season 8. D&D downplayed the importance of both character's arc (Daenerys&Jon) I guess their point was something like "The real evil is the PEOPLE not the magical stuff of the story" I see where they tried to go with it. The problem is that they failed miserably at doing so, and they could have chosen a different character for that purpose other than Daenerys. Or alas, let them use her just write her journey differently than they did. Let the impact of her own choices & desires crush her properly from the very START. But they did it in such a disrespectful way that obviously we all felt we were played from the very start just for SHOCK value. Just turning her bad because "omg look at her, she looked almost happy while Viserys was killed and didn't do a damn thing to stop it, look look this is important we will take this in season 8 after we show the exact opposite for most of the chapters, oh btw we won't EVER show her struggle with her madness (only one conversation here & there "I'm not my father bla bla", it will just explode from one moment to another because of all the pain she suffered. Listen fellows she had endured pain all her life and that didn't break her nor made her cruel. Hell, even Viserys had a better "going mad" character arc than her sister and he was there for what? So in addition to the evidence you found before about Cersei's miscarriage, this seems to confirm what you and others had speculated about for years.
Cersei was originally scripted to become the mad queen after said miscarriage, repeat Aerys' actions and in addition to using human shields against Daenarys, she also uncovered and armed the wildfyre caches that Aerys had leftover. Then Daenarys decides pull off the gloves and attack Cersei regardless of collateral damage and this accidently sets off the wild fire and burns down the whole city.
But they changed their minds at the last minute and made Dany go crazy to be "subversive" and to show off Emilia Clarke? Wow, this makes Dany's character assassination way worse than before. Even better is that the writers lied about things rather than admit the truth like they did with the JamiexCersei "rape scene" that wasn't meant to be a rape scene, but they fucked it up and lied in a poor attempt to save face.
Also, I heard a rumor that Rhaegal was contrived to get killed just because the writers didn't want Dany to have 2 dragons when she attacks King's Landing. Considering all of the contrivances thrown into season 7 to "even the board" between Dany and Cersei, I really wouldn't be surprised.

There is no Night King in the books because Martin dislikes the Dark Lord archetype. The moment he appeared in the show, I was like, yeah, those strokes are going to be reeeeeeally broad, it seems.
I think it's time to admit that nothing they did except for the burning of Shireen, hold the door and King Bran is from GRRM, and even those three are going to have massive changes in circumstance. Stannis is leagues away from Shireen, there is no door on Bloodraven's tree for Hodor to hold, and Bran's kingdom is one where magic is making a return.... Magic- an element that D&D deliberately omitted from the show as much as possible because they "tried to keep that stuff to a minimum because [they] didn’t just want it to appeal to a fantasy fanbase. [They] wanted them to love it, and their parents to love it, and people who play professional football to love it."

I think there is a general consensus about the fact that in the books Dany will set Kingslanding on fire accidentally due to the wildfire stashes. It will not be an act of madness as you point out but a miscalculation or lack of information. The result will be the same nonetheless, she will be pointed out as the responsible for a massacre and probably deemed mad as a result. That will be the tragedy of it all, however her ending at the hands of Jon cannot happen at all, since she will probably acknowledge the fact that one way or another she was responsible for the death of civilians. I believe, like many others that the guilt for the disaster in Kingslanding will be what makes her go north to fight together with Jon and get her vindication. " To touch the light, you must pass beneath the shadow."

I also think that in the books she will be *perceived* as mad by those who don't know all of the facts. They will know that she came upon King's Landing with her dragons, and it went up in flames. Therefore, she did it, case closed. We have already seen foreshadowing of this in A Dance With Dragons, where others have told lies about her or blamed her for things for which she was not responsible, like Quentyn's companions who are almost certainly going to go back to Dorne and tell Doran "Daenerys was TOTALLY responsible for killing your son, that evil bitch!". And Daenerys will have to have a reckoning with the nature of how her father really was.
I think part of the bittersweet aspect is the audience will end up knowing that she's a hero, but the stories told in the future will portray her as a villain. It's GRRM doing Jaime Lannister all over again.

I would have LOVED it if Daenerys had burned the soldiers so that they couldn't escape and Grey Worm and the Unsullied slaughtered them. It would have been morally wrong to kill unarmed soldiers but it would have been a very ruthless thing to do, something that other ruthless leaders of Westeros had done before her, only to have that act ignite a cache that would trigger a massive explosion killing thousands of civilians. Daenerys would have been horrified about that. I've thought for years that Daenerys would accidentally light a cache of wildfire her father laid down years before and it'd make the city explode, and the rest of Westeros would blame her for it.

This would also put more sense in Dany's point with Jon in their last scene where she said that Cersei was using their innocence against her. But again, I'm not surprised at all by the outcome. The show has for many years been all about creating big moments and shocking scenes that people look over and over again on youtube during this era of short attentiont span. So in the traditional sense yes, the writing was bad. But from a financial sense, they did things perfectly. Their ratings went up up up and everyone gushed at these irrational shocking scenes and season finales. I think the writing of Game of Thrones reflects its time. There is a video of Gwendoline Christie saying that when SHE originally read the script, at home (before the table read) she said she was inconsolable for hours. They asked her why. She said it was because of the way it ended. I have a very strong feeling that she was a Dany fan. (They once asked a bunch of cast members to choose their favorite animal during a Comic Con panel. Who in their right mind would choose the latter?!?!?! Having the city burn down accidentally because of the wildfire would have been logical, even poetic since it was her father who intended to use them originally to "burn them all". As far as I can tell, the ONLY reason the mad queen was written into the script was for plot armor. Either Dany or Jon had to die in order to bring the story to a close, and the only way they could kill Dany was to have Jon do it himself. Jon wouldn't have killed her for accidentally burning down the city, so they had to have her lose her mind and go crazy. That is the only justifiable reason the honorable Jon Snow would murder his queen, Aunt, lover, etc...What a shame. What a horrible ending to a show as amazing as Game of Thrones. The writers got lazy, and the rest of us paid the Iron price.

That's EXACTLY what will happen. And she'll get all the blame for it. The people will think she was at fault and think her mad. While she was sane the whole time, and Dany goes into absolute horror to see what she has done. Now tell me isn't that just more poetic then having her go crazy?

KL might burn down but I don’t think it’ll be Dany I think it’ll be Yuron who’ll burn it down while riding viserion when he attacks and Dany might get blamed for it or something like that so when she does come to kings landing she won’t be liked or she’ll be looked at as the villain. I don’t think the shows version is the true version at all cause really none of season 7&8 makes sense whatsoever rushed plot lines or not. Tyrion basically tricked Jon into killing Dany just to save his own ass from getting killed and Jon who knows nothing did it like the fool he is

@@jacaerystargaryen2663 Cool theory. There a couple of things that are important to consider like Aegon taking King's Landing before Dany arrives because he's not gonna give up the throne so easily. The people of King's Landing don't need a reason like that to hate Dany because Aegon already liberated them from one evil queen, and now he claims another has come to conquer them. Also, there's the theory that Eurom will eventually have to fight Stannis in a one v one as a rematch to when Stannis kicked Euron's ass in the first Greyjoy Rebellion. The whole thing between Dany and Aegon and King's Landing will probably happen before she goes to fight The White Walkers. Still, great theory.

I always knew that this wasn't the real ending. 7 seasons already foreshadowed what was about to happen, and in my opinion it was Daenerys not turning into a mad queen, but the opposite actually. David and Dan just went with poor writing to finish up something this big, and they horribly failed. Thank you so so much for putting so much effort in proving that our queen is innocent.

Wow, what a trainwreck. Nice job with the sleuthing. I think there is one more piece of evidence that bolsters your case: the scene of Jon confronting Dany in the throne room just before he kills her.
It is notable to me that, in that scene, the very first grievance he confronts her with is the mass executions of Lannister soldiers. Really? You don't lead with the indiscriminate carpet bombing? He then talks about seeing innocent children burned, which clearly stings Daenerys, but she responds that Cersei "used their innocence as a weapon;" which, again, supports the human shield version of events.
Jon NOT ONCE describes the actions of the previous episode; this suggests, to me, that "they forgot" to adapt this part of the script to accommodate the last minute changes.

So...a whole roster of professional actors, especially Clarke & Harrington, were ultimately traumatised by these developments just so D&D could pad their resumés? D&D are in no way the worst screenwriters in the world, but I want to know how they still have a career after this. I also want to know how they became so trusted, they got an unlimited budget to begin with. I want to know what kind of high places they have their friends in for them to get away with this openly.

Amazing video. Thank you for this. I feel vindicated. I've always said they literally pull the final season out of their asses, that it's nothing like what the book ending will be. George RR Martin himself said that we got 'an ending', not the ending, hence not his ending. I laugh at people commenting here, grasping at straws, still saying that season8 was the real ending anyway and that Dany was always going to go mad, that she's already going mad in the books (where?). Not even straight facts can do anything when prejudices are so ingrained. It's sad.
Also, on a completely different note. If you want a bittersweet, perfect ending that makes complete sense, go watch Dark on Netflix. Really amazing show. Dumb and Dumber should watch and learn.

DIdn't D&D have a day long meeting with George to discuss the end? Maybe George revealed that the Mad Queen was what he intended but that the madness would come after the conquering of Westeros or was more developed during. It could be that D&D simply decided in the last minute to try and shoe horn the "correct" ending into their own interpretation.

There was also a script released a year or so before the filming of season 8 that Dany actually had died giving birth..or I should say Varys killed her because she had asked Jorah to do it and the ending was the daughter of Jon and Dany actually became queen with Tyrion with Messandrei raising the daughter. What they did to Dany in the last season, especially, was wrong. They didn't even give her an arc.

I never really saw that being George’s style. Seems too melodramatic. She doesn’t have to genuinely go daffy, that can just be the perception that her enemies use against her. George is all about highlighting the difficulties of communication in Westeros and how misinformation can be weaponized. I’m unsure if GRRM has read Mearsheimer’s “The Tragedy of Great Power Politics” but it’s essentially about how two great powers - unsure of one another’s intentions - begin posturing defensively which kickstarts a souring in relations and arms race termed a “security competition” which if left unchecked spirals into outright aggression and war, all due to little more than a lack of communication. If something goes down even resembling the show I figure it’ll look something like that.
Perhaps Daenerys does something with her dragons that’s 100% militarily justified but that’s used to paint her as the ‘Mad Queen’ which causes more houses to rally to her enemies. Something that can be used as a propaganda coup - think the Bombing of Dresden. For years the common perception was that some absolutely insane number of people died in the bombing due to Goebbels and his fucking propaganda embellishing the bombing. (Casualties still ranged from like 20,000 to 25,000 which is intense but nowhere near the 200,000+ that was commonly given as the figure)
My point is that I find D&D incapable of portraying the complexities of that kind of political reality, so for them the next best thing was to just have her turn heel.

    • @alyssafoster4765
      @alyssafoster4765 4 года назад

Fuzzy Dunlop The political theme your presenting completely aligned with George’s themes and season 1/2 Littlefinger where he emphasizes that “knowledge is power.” This shows how information about events like this and the variances in bias are what politics is about.
