If the CIA hadn't assassinated the Democratically elected President (Salvator Allende) in his country 1973 and installed the Terrorist General Pinochet -his family wouldn't have had to flee Chile and immigrate here (and he wouldn't be a big actor hosting Saturday Night Live! )
To be fair, they also fled their country because of the American supported far-right coup. His parents were socialists and supporters of Allende, they would have likely been killed.
It made me really happy to hear so many people laugh at the joke he said in Spanish before he translated it to English. Even Pedro was pleasantly surprised that people knew what he was saying! 3:14
I have really enjoyed the characters he has played. His character Obryn Martell in Game of Thrones was my favorite in the whole show after Tyrion. I really liked the Mandalorian too. I wasn't so sure about the Last of US at first but it's quickly becoming a favorite also.
Pinochet was a brutal leader in Chile. He ordered the torture of thousands and thousands of citizens for not having the same views that he demanded the people have. And the death toll/people missing is well over 3,000 souls. Those were people that Pinochet's government arrested and brutally tortured and murdered for Pinochet's political gain. When he said his parents took him and his sister out of the country "fleeing Pinochet" - he was acknowledging that his parents risked their very lives to ensure he and his sister had a better life. I can see why he got choked up - the trail of dead bodies pinochet left was staggering. Sting wrote a song about pinochet's deadly rule. The song is called: "They Dance Alone" - gut wrenching.
Wow... That's one of the most sincere SNL monologues I've ever seen. They should stick to that sincerity for the rest of the shows years. I'm sure it's appreciated everywhere!
