Hey guys, I hope you enjoy this video! I decided to re-upload after getting a lot of feedback about the audio and exposure. We published a release date in advance and thought we would have everything perfectly done in time, but we found things taking longer than expected (since truthfully I have never made a video this in-depth, and didn’t realize how much longer it would take). Instead of pushing back the release date we decided to do everything we could to get it out on the promised day. There were some very late nights leading up the release, and in honesty, a lot of the mentioned feedback we didn’t catch from pure sleeplessness. In retrospect, we should have been more thoughtful and particular on saying when we would have it completed. I’ll make sure I learn from this and we are more careful with promised release dates and the audio/video quality moving forward. If you’re curious - we improved the audio and exposure the best we could but it certainly could have been better. I felt this topic deserved to be bigger than just a skype interview, so we traveled to LA on our own dime. We only had one day with the MVMT team and since we spent most of our budget traveling, I could only bring one person to capture everything (operating two camera angles, capturing audio of two people, etc.) so some of the captured audio and video exposure was off from the start since one person was focusing on so many things. Additionally, we had to rent some of the equipment locally in LA, and our team wasn't very familiar with some of the mics we got since our usual mics weren’t available at the local camera rental store. If you have edited video before, which I’m sure a lot of you have, you know there’s only so much you can “do in post” to improve things. Next time, we’ll do better to have the appropriate crew and equipment. As my channel and business grows we plan on producing more and more premium, in-depth content around the world. This has been a great learning experience, and your support means everything and makes it all possible.
Teddy Baldassarre dont stress brotha!!! If anything there was almost too much production!!!! That being said you capturing footage of a mvmt designer answering question like a theranos employee afraid of elizabeth holmes is priceless!!! Loved all the watch talk and serious convo, didn’t need the last bit. I mention this not to be an asshole or unworthy critic, but rather am of the belief that the watchfam would rather your focus be strictly talking watches vs gavel closing sequences. Again... seriously... great work.
Hi Teddy! I think the production of this video was pretty good but I don't really like the bias in the video. I felt that zooming into Jake's face was a poor tactic which clearly shows you're trying to guide the video in a certain direction. I don't think that Jake's reasoning was unwarranted. MVMT watches are not quality. But I would say that they are a good looking watch and that there are watch brands out there, that are just like MVMT but more expensive. I do agree that the pricing has been set by MVMT for maximum profitability and marketing but I don't think MVMT's mission was to be the most affordable, best watch movement brand in the first place. MVMT has never really targeted the watch connoisseur market.
@@MiguelGarcia-vj7oo We're talking about watches here.....not anywhere near the same tier. I've never owned a MVMT, but they're doing what most companies do, & that's defend their product. If they get the criticism they do, is because the watch community is very passionate. MVMT is a fashion brand, nothing more & nothing less. We're just sick of the hipsters pointing out how their DW is not out of fashion.
The Balls on Teddy; to go into a brand HQ, get them to admit they sell Chinese watches and straight up call them out while sitting from their own couch.
We all knew the truth before this documentary........the reality is the majority are oblivious and mvmt capitalized on that. Just like the majority don't know that Microsoft uses Unix/Linux for most of their development, cloud and applications. Open source has been here for decades but the MASSES are brainwashed by brands, trends and fads.
That's the problem with the society today we respect anyone who has confidence regardless whether there's any consistency and integrity in what they represent.
Jake should have thrown Teddy out of his office. Not sure why he put up with Teddy's rudeness and disrespect. Who is he to question their marketing? Watches exist at all levels and prices and the entire industry is not exactly known for being fairly priced. Value is very subjective. This should not come as a shock especially for a reviewer.
Do I like MVMT watches...heck no! But regardless, this dude took what was likely a $5000 investment and turned it into a $100,000,000+ company. In terms of marketing: mad respect.
@@MiyamotoMusakaki OMG, seriously? Are we really going to fall for this "privilege" shit? And...you can't even spell the word. But I guess it's okay because it's how you spell it in "YOUR" culture. LOL
It’s kinda funny how now that he’s rich, he can’t actually wear the luxury watches he used to want because now he’s a slave to the shitty watches he made his millions with.
Honestly dude, When you're a Founder of a brand and you're over-protecting the brand and attack to the brand feels like a personal attack to you. You wouldnt want to wear another brand. Not because you cant, some of these people are heads to the ground in caring the brand they built, as if it were themself. On that note tho, he's a multi-millionaire, and he might get caught in luxury stuff, watches, cars, clothes you name it. He probably has a buben zorweg littered with luxury watches, another box full of high-end watches too. Luxury leather pouches for watches, he probably collects luxury pens too.
I gained alot of respect for you Teddy after this video. You sat there next to the man and told him your honest opinion and did not hold back in slating the watches. That takes courage and conviction.
Agreed. A real designer usually has a strong vision which he/she which they speak about with confidence and enthusiasm. This guy seemed hesitant, projected no confidence, seemed almost evasive. More like you were speaking to some from accounting that was told to discuss the design process.
Clueless is unfair, but he did look uncomfortable, possibly he's an introvert as a baseline and was told that a watch connoisseur youtuber was coming in, I'm not surprised he's not at ease
This reminds me of why i stopped watching his videos a few years ago. Each video is a bullshit advert. Didn't his facial cream brand liquidate? Or was he just the promo guy and they let him go?
Let me frame it this way. I think I can say with a fair amount of confidence that most people in the watch community will not only buy strictly on quality of the product, but the emotions and connections we make with a particular brand. How many people buy a Royal oak or nautilus not strictly because of the quality of it, but because of the hands it has touched along the way. You can for sure find better quality for cheaper (maybe not many but i'm sure you can) and that isn't even taking into account the crazy after market people pay. So to have this "value" argument with MVMT I think is fair, but I can also understand a person that is trying to make a watch that isn't entirely about the quality of the product, but instead how it makes you feel. Sure in the example of the Timex Weekend compared to a MVMT watch you could say that it is similarly spec'ed and costs double. However if we did that for every single watch, once you start comparing swiss watches to grand seiko's the value prop gets blown wide open. Is the rolex date just over priced in comparison to Grand Seiko with similar date and high beat. You could certainly make that argument. The only difference I feel is that once you've reached that price range of Rolex vs Grand seiko there are more redeeming qualities that you could say well "I bought it for reason X". Where are the lower at here the only reason really results in "It looked nicer" or "It's cooler" (in part thanks to marketing). However I think those are perfectly fine reasons to buy a watch. In short, is the MVMT watch a good value per specification that it offers...No absolutely not. Is a MVMT watch a great watch to get if you can really connect with the story that MVMT is telling... Yes absolutely. These antiquated devices we wear on are wrists are so obsolete it really circles back to kinda being funny again. It really is all about the stories we tell ourselves. Like why is a re-release of the 321 movement from omega a big deal. In fact as far as moving the needle forward in watch making, there is an argument to be made that moves us backwards in creating demand for nostalgia instead of improvements; But it is all about the stories we tell, the memories we make, and the things we appreciate. There really is no wrong watch to pick if you love it.
But isn't the story MVMT is telling of the same quality as their watches ? Like basically a large scale scam involving blatantly lying on both design & quality How could anyone connect with that ?
Deffinitly rather put my money on Orient, Seiko, Timex, Casio, Citizen, and Bulova, lots of nice watches for reasonable prices that will last and have more functionality to back up their appearance
I’ll be honest, I’m a noob in the watch world but Teddy hit it spot on. First watch I purchased was a MVMT and that got my foot in the door. Since then I’ve purchased 2 Citizen watches and am now looking to buy a Seiko 5. I honestly would not have gotten into the watch game if it wasn’t for the gateway watch
@@iko5698 yes i agree with just. I just 10 minutes in, and teddy already use attacking mode. I want to see this as a level headed conversation. And focus on how they create the mvmt brand.
This is actually a very important documentary for young designers and entrepreneurs alike. Many takeaways to be had from this video, both positive and negative. An excellent lesson on decision making and product / brand perception.
Hey Teddy, First off, great documentary. Speaking from experience here - a few years ago, I purchased a MVMT as a graduation present for myself once I graduated university. I loved it for a year or so - it seemed to be good value (to someone who really knew nothing about watches). But it did exactly that. It made me start to research watches. It made me find channels like yours and many others and encouraged me to learn about watches and horology and what value in a watch means. My MVMT has since stopped working, and I have purchased a 1967 Omega Seamaster Chronometer that I LOVE. My point is, for better or worse, MVMT was a stepping stone for me into a hobby/interest that I likely otherwise wouldn't have found/couldn't afford to get into at that time in my life.
I can blame the "screen death" of my "Samsung Galaxy Watch Active" for my sudden tangent into starting to collect watches, got a cheap "Boderry Urban" skeletal watch, a nato strap to go with it, and I've really enjoyed wearing it. I've got Orient Commuter on the way now and have my eyes on ordering a Orient "Mini Triton" dive watch, as well as a Gshock that I plan to do just a silly amount of mods to just for fun. Got a Garmin Instinct Solar to replace the fitness tracking the Samsung used to because it's built like a tank and doesn't do the flashy extra junk (and a ligit 12 day battery life so no daily charging), and it's such a utilitarian simple thing with a rubber case on it that I have no shame wearing a second watch on the opposite wrist, something cool on the left, something practical on the right, it's fun
Nice story. I too got into watches. Buying a mvmt doesn’t make you a moron. Thanking mvmt does. It’s like Israel thanking Hitler. Cmon just own up to getting played. Mvmt didn’t get you into watches…your interest in watches got you into watches.
MVMT watches are not for watch collectors, are for compliments. Women loves slim minimalist watches on men, when it comes to fashion China is at the top.
Respect to MVMT for agreeing to the interview. And didn't know Teddy had the b**ls to call him out to his face. Wow. But... when i saw the guy got $100m i stopped feeling sorry for him immediately ahah
Honestly, respect to MVMT here. They agreed to the interview and did their best to keep cool under pressure. I think the questions were rather loaded and one-sided, and they were sporting even though the questions weren't exactly fairplay. I'm not a fan of overpriced fashion watches, but to their credit, they hung in there.
Yeah he didn't pull that off that well. If I had to guess, I think what he was going for was the effect of, they're the chef that comes up with the dishes, and the manufacturer is the rest of the restaurant that sources the ingredients and puts it together. Still not an amazing analogy.
You guys have lost your minds with this "middle man" thing. Bring a steak with you to a nice restaurant and tell them you want it medium-rare, but only want to pay for the cooking. Maybe Ford will start selling cars directly to you tomorrow. Lol.
I got into watches around middle school and started by wearing $8 Walmart watches. After a few years of this my mom got me a MVMT watch for Christmas. It was a big step up for me at the time. I thought it was great and compared to what i had been wearing it fealt like I was wearing a true luxury watch. Slowly I got more into watches and started buying more quality brands Iike Tissot and Bulova. While my MVMT watches fealt cheap and kind of shit after getting more quality watches, I have to give them credit. They make trendy looking watches at a decent price and I think they help guide people into more serious watch collecting
Nothing against mvmt and respect for doing this but these guys wasted your time and came across as skeezy. I have no problem with them selling watches at a markup if that’s what the market is willing to pay. They should’ve defended their company based on economics or what value they bring to the market but instead they tried to dodge every question.
I don’t think it was a waste of time. We as the audience were entertained, and informed about what kind of company MVMT is and Teddy asked some great questions. He’s proven himself to be a brilliant interviewer.
Honestly respect him a lot for not only agreeing to do the interview, but continuing to do it and take those uppercuts at every turn. P.S. nice Nomos. 👌🏻
She's right you know. This has been blown out of proportion. I'm a watch enthusiast but why are we giving MVMT so much attention anyway? I don't get it. The old man is right, we all have to start somewhere even if it means buying our first watch like MVMT. Hell, I owned a Fossil and did not regret it at all. What we don't realize maybe is that MVMT has a very different market segment and I don't think we belong to that segment. Not everyone cares about "value for money" or the movement whether it's Miyota or ETA. A lot of people care about looks and just telling time. That's it. It is what it is. My friends and family don't care about watches if it's a Seiko or Tissot. Nobody really does that's why I don't bother educating them. I tried a couple of times but they said, "WE DO NOT CARE." Again, this has been blown out of proportion. For me, I don't care and I don't mind that MVMT exists.
My first actual watch (apart from these 20mm SpongeBob watches that I used to have when I was like 5) was a fossil and it got me further into watches. When I bought it, I didn't know a lot about watches and went to the store knowing already I would buy a watch because I really needed and wanted one. I tried a few watches and bought a pretty basic watch for 130€. I like the original design and didn't know any better and I'm fine with the quality. I'll buy my second watch soon, it will be a Seiko srpa25k1 and I can't wait to order it.
My first watch was a MVMT. I got it because I knew nothing about watches, needed one for work, and saw all the advertising so I thought what the heck. It led me down a rabbit hole of research and opened the watch door for me. I don't regret the purchase at all.
Have a lot more respect for MVMT after seeing that they are willing to talk. I wouldn’t get one myself but nice to see they don’t shy away from the questions
Lots of respect for Teddy for asking questions with unfaltering conviction. Respect for the MVMT guy as well for taking the questions like a champ, being more transparent than I'd expect makes business sense for him, and - for seizing an opportunity all the watch brands we love could have seized but likely felt was beneath them. The overwhelming majority of people looking to buy a watch just want something that looks good, works, and is at a price point they can afford. These guys realize that more than most and have built a business worth hundreds of millions of dollars BECAUSE they've put that insight to work. I'd buy a Casio or an Orient or a Seiko before I bought these guys' stuff, mostly cause these others DON'T position themselves to be something they're not. But I understand that many people find the MVMT watches better LOOKING than those others - and that's what most people care about most.
Not the first business to sell overpriced crap to dumb consumers solely through clever marketing and definetely not the last, especially in the fashion industry.
I just don't get why all of this hate is concentrated on MVMT. There are hundreds of fashion watch brands that operate in the same way. Why no one is giving shit to Kenneth Cole, Skagen, Invicta, or Fossil? They were selling overpriced fashion junk way longer, before MVMT even existed. These guys just want to make money and people who buy their product are happy with the looks and the price of the watch. They are not watch geeks. They don't care about company's history, innovation, and heritage. They have a stylish watch that keeps good time for a little over hundred bucks and that is good enough for them. And if something happens to the watch it's not a big deal. They're easily replacable. It's only a hundred bucks!
@@johndong7524 very true. I think it's because MVMT started a trend of "agressive" marketing toward the common buyer and especially for blatantly lying within that campain
@@riocc I never even heard of this brand until recently and I've never seen any of their products in stores before, so I'm not sure what aggressive campaign you're talking about. The most known fashion watch brands in my neck of the woods are Kenneth Cole, Skagen, and Fossil, but no one is going after them.
I'm a headphone enthusiast. Before Beats, $400 headphones were unthinkable to almost everyone. Sennheiser, Audiotechnica, Shure, Beyerdynamic etc. were established but niche brands catering to audiophiles or studios. Beats came out and were reviled, but then the aforementioned brands started coming out with their own fashion oriented headphones to compete. This was a gateway drug for many people including myself. In highschool I wanted either Beats or Bose. Then I started researching and bought some Senns instead. Now I am able to say I have heard almost everything, from the cheapest no-brand earbuds up to Focal Utopias and even the Orpheus and I've never owned Beats. If Beats weren't around I don't know if I would have considered even entering this hobby. Tyll Herstens, the Godfather of headphones has a similar opinion: Beats were a necessary evil that revitalized the whole headphone industry and turned it into the thriving behemoth it is today. I think MVMT, Daniel Wellington, etc. are the same thing for the watch industry. (Non Smart)Watches are normally viewed as a) cheap bracelets or b) extremely expensive bracelets. These guys are in between. Yes, many people will buy one of their products and stick to it. But others will buy it then look for a sidegrade or an upgrade... and boy, are they in for a treat when they find out what they've been missing.
Teddy, thank you for a well filmed documentary about MVMT. To be 100% honest, I almost fell for their marketing hype and purchased one. There are some of their styles that I like, and at the time I didn't know enough about horology to understand what a watch at their price point represented. At the end of the day, value for money is very subjective. As is evidenced by MVMT's customer base, plenty of people believe they're getting value for their money. That means a watch that works, looks good, and is considerably less expensive than an Apple watch (which I would guess is a large target market for MVMT). MVMT's target market is not the seasoned watch collector. I do agree that someone who buys a MVMT watch could evolve into that seasoned watch collector, however, I don't believe that is MVMT's intent. They just want to sell watches. It would be interesting to know how many customers are repeat customers. Also, knowing we live in a capitalistic, free market society, nobody is holding a gun to the heads of consumers and forcing them to buy MVMT watches. Good marketing is clearly used to sell their product, and they're very successful in their marketing strategies. What MVMT is offering to potential customers isn't too much different than what ultra-low cost airlines offer versus the top level airlines. For that matter, it's not too different from what Korean car companies offer versus BMW, Merc, Porsche, Jag, etc. Marketing is all about drawing consumers to your brand. Perhaps the question to be asked is, "are they deceiving their customers in any way?", or "are they running a shady operation that puts out an unreliable product?" I think if I spend $100-$200 on a quartz-based watch, I'd expect it to last until the battery dies. If MVMT watches don't last as long as the battery does, then they're running a shady operation, IMHO. I think that's a part of the documentary that is missing; how reliable are their watches? How long should a customer expect their watch to last? That's where value for money goes from being subjective to being objective. Also, many in the millennial generation don't necessarily buy products to keep long-term. Almost all products are simply discarded when they fail, and a replacement is purchased. I'm sure if you asked a MVMT customer what they'll do if their watch fails, they'll say they'll just buy another one. As always, great content, and I look forward to more of your videos.
Great work! You managed to respectfully talk about all the things that people dislike about mvmt. I'm sure it want easy to hold the anger for the crappy answers hahaha you're awesome!!!!
This was great. I’d never buy their watches but now I get it, they are just doing fast fashion watches which suits the $100 price point. Seems like the industry is butt hurt that non-watch guys built $100m company while they missed the boat. Fair play. Selling watches to non-watch people could actually be a gateway for many gen-z people.
Well done Teddy! I was happy to see someone that is respected in the watch community (you) ask MVMT the questions we all had and you didn’t hold back, either. I think that MVMT had the opportunity to show the watch world what makes them different and justifies their price/cost to consumers and “quality” of their watches and they failed to do so. In avoiding and not answering so many questions, I think that they confirmed what most of us already thought. I applaud you on sticking to your standards while giving them a chance to change your opinion of them. Keep up the good work!!
I am very surprised that MVMT did this actually. Reason being is they knew Teddy had already made his mind up before even sitting down. They knew they were going to get difficult questions and that it was nearly impossible to change his mind.
Consider their marketing, to me, doesn’t bring MVMT into question, but I question the people whose integrity is so cheaply for sale. I don’t blame MVMT for marketing themselves, but blame “influencers” or supposed “honest” reviewers for selling out their customers.
There you go! From the cheeseburger analogy, clearly MVMNT buys their watches from Chinese assembly plants who do all the sourcing of existing watch parts from different Chinese manufacturers!
You know, I don't have a problem with that. If I was doing a watch startup I'd probably be doing the same thing. I have a cousin who was the guy who went to China to source parts for a well known consumer product you may have owned, which you'd probably say good things about. What I have a problem with is being dishonest about it and using "social influencers" to push it as something amazing. There are plenty of small brands out there that don't pretend to be something they're not, and I have a lot more respect for them, and would probably pay more for them.
I have just come across this video and it is one of the greatest videos I have ever watched on RUclips. Fair play to Jake for agreeing to do the interview
Wow that “design guy” is just clueless as what to say... Asked what his favourite vintage watch was, he almost looked like he couldn’t even mention one
@@DeeKay1911 it just shows the time. No key feature not even seconds. A nautilus copy. But personally if that was 90$ instead of the $300 pricetag i would probably buy that
That's why they are so successful. They didn't hire traditional watch folk. They hired hip millennial designers where reading time comes last. It's literally like modern art. It paid off financially but it took a heavy beating by people who actually care about watches.
Okay I used to absolutely hate MVMT (and I suppose I still do for the most part), but the fact that they were willing to sit down and have this interview is somewhat respectable.
I was hoping at some point he's show two watches side by side, the unbranded Alibaba watch and the MVMT watch and just ask... "Which came first? Because it sounds like you're accusing the Alibaba producers of ripping off your designs."
I'd take a MVMT watch and the alibaba-alike, pull the backs off, and ask him to explain the similarities. Then ask him to show me a design that hasn't gone into production yet, let me see if I can find it on alibaba (so I could know it's not a design that's presently for sale), then show it to me when it's in production, so I could know they actually designed their watches. (I'd of course agree not to show the design for a few months so he could get it into production.)
@@tmf866Little late to the party but you wouldn’t find anything that way. They have grown so big that the are able to propose their own design to Chinese factories and have it made for dollar and fifty per unit. They probably do design themselves but it doesn’t change the quality of the product.
Mvmt was my first watch I owned and it got me into watches. I now own brands like citizens Bulova and Tag heuer and its all thanks to mvmt. Got to star somewhere.
This company was started for non watch people who couldn’t care less about the internals or quality and just needed a cheap watch to match an outfit or whatever. I don’t think it’s a bad idea.
Man Teddy is no Joke! Not a single flinch, stutter. Straight forward questions. And dam good facts to back those questions. No escape at all... But respect for MVMT for saying YES to this. I have no hate for MVMT. Because of them I fell in love with watches and started to build a passion for it. Which lead me to appreciate the real watches and the craftsmanship behind it. 2 years after buying a MVMT, I was looking at Seikos, Orients, Tissot (affordable good automatics). For this I thank you MVMT. For me, they were the voice.
I will say I agree that these watch companies should exist. I don’t like their products and I’m not a fan of any company that makes a cheap thing look expensive; but when I see things like MVMT I think of my dad. Growing up, my dad always bought Fossil watches. They were junk, but my dad loved wearing a watch and he didn’t want to spend reasonable money on a good watch. But it fed his desire to wear a watch. When I entered my 20s and graduated college, he was desperate to get me to wear a watch. He felt that a real professional wore a watch. He would buy me Fossil after Fossil, each one getting regretted. And then he’d wear it rather than return it. When I was making enough to buy a nicer watch, I decided instead to introduce my dad to a nicer watch first. I bought him a Citizen Air Diver Titanium from a Japanese market place. When I gave him the watch it looked like he was having a seizure. The next day he threw away every Fossil watch he owned. But his eyes were open. About a year later he bought his first Rolex Submariner...which is resting on my wrist now. Then he bought 3 more Rolex’s. MVMT is that gateway drug for some people. People who may otherwise have never worn a watch. And when some of those people have the money, they might buy a nicer watch. And through that, the watch industry will grow and good watch companies will have a larger market to sell to and they will do better as companies. And I’m cool with that.
Benjamin Gibson Teddy’s point is that yes, these are entry level watches, but they’re not priced as such. They’re too expensive to truly be entry level. People are paying too much for them. They’re using marketing to convince consumers that the watches are cool, and to not notice how poorly made they are for the price. Timex, Seiko, Citizen, and others at lower price points are better made, will last longer, and look just as good.
Great story but it really depends. Your dad is only lucky enough you introduced him to a proper watch manufacturer Seiko is a gateway brand. Casio is a gateway brand. Timex is a gateway brand. Fossil, maybe. But MVMT? These people doesnt give one shit about watches and heritage. People who pulled the trigger on MVMT, more often then none, werent opened to the watch world later on. What we want is for people to go to and support reputable and respectable watch companies like seiko or casio (which btw sell way cheaper watches if u wanna talk about reasonable priced watches) for their first watches and not simply give money to these scammers who exploits people's stupidity
Teddy my man! I've watched your videos for quite a while, but this one I think is the greatest. It's well done I like your opinions and it's a little quirky. Good job!
i dont get the hate. i bought a mvmt field watch for $100 three years ago and its still ticking along on the same battery it came with. the canvas strap feels good, solid and durable. the dial is kind of plane jane but overall its been a good and reliable watch that keeps great time. ive had no problems with it.
Before saying anything I would like to say that I dont own a mvmt watch . I am not a watch enthusiast by any means. I have just 3 Japanese watches from seiko, orient and casio gshock. Having said that I don't understand why are people hating on mvmt watches ? Maybe because they have nothing to do? How is the price of a commodity set in the market ? Through demand and supply. If people are willing to pay 200plus dollars for mvmt watch then how is that wrong ? As long as there is demand the watch company will keep on supplying the watch. That's not anything to hate about. And the thing about high markup, what's wrong with a high markup ? Is there a limit set by world leaders on what the markup on watches all over the world should be ? I am quite sure that their watches isn't a value for money when you can buy orient and seiko watches but still that's not an illegal thing to do. Save you hatred for criminals, rapists, terrorist and corruption politicians not for people why are doing business legally. And the final thing of their excessive marketing, I dont think there is any limit set by world leaders on how a company should market or push its products. I strongly believe that companies like orient should also focus on marketing which will automatically attract people to quality watches. Peace
Yea, I don't know why people don't like mvmt watches. I'm not a watch enthusiast and I don't give a shit about the internals of the watch, as long as it can tell the time and feels and looks quality, its a good watch in my eyes. I would much rather pay for a mvmt watch than a timex or seiko since the I fancy the design of mvmt watches. Don't get why so many people are being salty, the average consumer doesn't give a shit about the movement of a watch, they care about aesthetics.
@@Black182heart I think you shouldn't only consider the point value for money, the point of everyone's one decision. You should also consider on what cost for the people and the environment these watches are produced. For me as a watch enthusiast there's only one answer for that point: they are not only overpriced cheap watches that people get ripped off with, they are also a threat for people's wealth. By the way: very nice that you own such nice watches.
Black182heart , What He. de. said. They're ripping off avg income people who just don't know any better. For the price they charge you can easily get a Seiko, Citizen or other solid watches with branded movements. So don't just drop long ass essays. Jeez.
Man, I am so appreciative of you having this conversation. Maybe some of the best insight into the people that run these fashion brands. He's a decent enough guy, but I really think he's trying to hide the fact that they really don't know much about quality control.
New to watches this year so I'm binging a lot of watch content. Really liked Teddy early on. This makes me like and respect him even more. And respect to the mvm(n)t guy for doing the interview.
What a bloody insightful documentary. Very well done. As much as I wouldn't buy a movement watch, they certainly got my respect for saying yes to the interview.
I just caught your documentary with Jake . Where to start !!! You're 100% correct in your evaluation of their watches. All of us in the watch world know that they're peices of shit. He agreed to this video to back up his business, not his watches. Thise of us that truly appreciate the artisanship and craftsmanship and mechanical complexity of truly fine watches are definitely emotionally invested in this addiction. Even his partner(I think) , when you ask him what his favorite vintage watch was , didn't really appear to know but rather was trying to think of something he'd read from his vintage book . Just my observation. Anyway , dies it hurt the watch community. I truly don't know . How many people will actually become interested in watches because they bought an MVMT watch ? Not many . I give Jake props for showing up, and also for creating a successful business. After all , this is the USA and he has the freedom here to do that . When we talk about the market , obviously there's a market for them and they tapped into that market . I guess , to me , it says that there's a whole generation of young people that look at a watch as a throw away item and are pleased to be able to buy something at that price point. They really have nothing invested in one of those watches
I just got a Tissot Chrono, swiss made for $450 AUD. The watch is absolutely beautiful. This cannot be compared to a $250 AUD mvmt in any way. Save a little more and get something that is really worth you money.
You can almost get 2 watches for 450, which is their point. You are getting nearly the same materials they use. The Tissot is a beauty, but is a bit overpriced imo
I agree with Beaver’s comment about these other watch brands/products like the Apple Watch, DW, MVMT. People my age were not interested in watches. Growing up as a kid in the 2000s I did not see a lot of people wear watches. The only people I saw wear watches were businessmen or people who held high postions in a company. Even in University from 2014-2019 I did not see many people wear watches, not even the rich international kids who could easily buy a rolex. The Apple watch was a godsend for my generation who now are starting to see a purpose for watches again. Even if they didn’t buy it, they now have the idea of wearing a watch in their head. We grew up in the digital age with cell phones and computers available to the masses. In the pass the watch was a tool that would tell you the time, now it’s was considered mere jewelry. My first watch was a cheap Timex that cost me $35 and a Casio F-91W which cost me $8. I had friends who bought a Daniel Wellington and eventually moved on to other more respected brands as they wanted to get more into watch collecting. Sure their quality sucks, but at the end of the day if it brings in more people into the world of watches I see it as a win in the long run.
Good work. I wouldn't stress over any of the flaws you think are in this - given your budget and experience you did a remarkable job. I confess I was not a fan of your early videos but you have really grown into it. Looking forward to seeing more like this.
We should all be like the old man which Teddy interviewed. Instead of chastising people who bought those questionable watch brands and those watch brands themselves, we should be grateful. That optimistic outlook that the old man has is truly amazing.
Missed opportunity in my opinion. You could have done some investigative journalism, talk to their suppliers, cross reference their claims. Etc. all the while keeping your cool, avoiding judgement and opinions, remaining professional, friendly but firm, and letting the truth speak for itself. This would have had a much stronger impact.
If you want real investigative journalism, the interview is part of it; it establishes their claims and which are testable. On the other hand I personally would have talked to them, asked questions, recorded their answers, then I would have pulled out a MVMT watch and an alibaba-alike and pulled the backs off, then asked them to explain if they were exactly the same inside. This can still be done; they may not be there to answer, but the insides of the watches can still be examined to see if they're the same. I would have also asked them to show me a design which hadn't gone to market yet, give me a digital image so I could check that out, and let me know when it actually had gone to market so I could verify that. This would be an exercise in them proving that they were designing their own watches. Talking to their suppliers would be a good idea. It might be necessary to open one of their watches and see if there's a manufacturer listed on the movement to find out who they are.
I'm a watch guy through and through (why else would I be subscribed to TB) but I honestly don't get why there is so much hate towards MVMT. I also don't get why they are talked about so much by the watch community, seems like a lot of wasted time and energy. These watches are not geared towards watch geeks/nerds/enthusiasts, they are fashion watches that they expect "normal" (not watch geek) people to buy without putting too much thought into it. Yes, there are much better options in the watch world if you want to factor in things like the movement or brand heritage, but the average Joe/Jane doesn't care about that, they just want something that looks cool. And per Mr. Biver, these cheap watches can serve as jumping off points for many to enter the world of higher-end watches. There are parallels to MVMT in almost any industry, especially those with large enthusiast communities. Take beer for example, millions of people drink Bud Light and are perfectly happy with it while beer enthusiasts probably wouldn't be caught dead drinking it. Bud light isn't targeting the beer enthusiast crowd, they are trying to appeal to the masses.
Bud Light sells at a fair price point, you get what you paid for, same for a Guiness or craft beer, in the MVMT case they have a profit of 2000%, that's a scam no matter what they say...
A few years ago, I actually considered getting the MVMT watch so I don't really mind the brand. Luckily I am never really into dressy or fashion watch. Casio saved me with their Pro Trek watch, then on to G-Shock, then the SARB, then dive watches, and now finally I'm starting to look at dress watches.
Weird the guy agreed to the interview, considering he didn't have any good answers to questions he should have seen coming 100 miles away. Anyway, gotta respect the dude as a businessman. He found a market, played it smart, made millions of dollars, fair and square.
I think this is an easy bang out. These watches are not for watch enthusiasts, they are for everyone else. They are fashion/style pieces and make a nice accessory to someones outfit / look. Fossil has been in this space and has done the best job of it for decades before mvmt and still is a leader, maybe say the same about Armani and all of the other fashion brands. Who sits down with them and shakes their finger at them? Holding a fashion watch brand to the same standard as a watch enthusiasts brand is ridiculous. Almost everyone I know has a watch of some kind, but I rarely meet someone that knows about watch heritage, movements, etc, and that's 99.999% of the population. If mvmt made watches to compete with Rolex, they wouldn't exist. Good for him/them, much respect.
This is hands down one of my favorite youtube videos I’ve seen and i’m probably on youtube for an hour a day to wind may day down. Great job Teddy! Love your channel and I love this concept
Again... seriously... great work.
Sound issues aside, it was still pretty great. Hopefully this recaptures the momentum the original upload had.
Thanks ur the best 🙏
Dam don't be so hard on your self this shit was great.
I don't care about the brand, it's like it doesn't exist for me. But what I did like about them is the fact they had the courage to speak with you.

Just like the majority don't know that Microsoft uses Unix/Linux for most of their development, cloud and applications. Open source has been here for decades but the MASSES are brainwashed by brands, trends and fads.
The MVMT guy is making a killing anyway. He started and runs a successful company. He's got balls too. Probably bigger.

Real men real style too. I like both their vids but those watch plugs just destroy the class they had.
Alpha M is a joke, not mvmt watches. He starts all his videos with “HEY, SO YOUR AN ATTRACTIVE GUY AND YA WANT A SEÑORITA”. So annoying.
Great breakdown. If they didn’t comment on their quality as much as telling a brand story and emotional connection w the watches it may be different
Well said.
Deffinitly rather put my money on Orient, Seiko, Timex, Casio, Citizen, and Bulova, lots of nice watches for reasonable prices that will last and have more functionality to back up their appearance
My problem is the scam side of the business. No mvmt should be burned to ground.

31:55 that restaurant analogy sure sounds a lot like a middle man to me
He almost said it, but seems like the whole company's been trained not to say 'middle man'.
Yeah he didn't pull that off that well. If I had to guess, I think what he was going for was the effect of, they're the chef that comes up with the dishes, and the manufacturer is the rest of the restaurant that sources the ingredients and puts it together. Still not an amazing analogy.
A middleman selling to the company itself
You guys have lost your minds with this "middle man" thing. Bring a steak with you to a nice restaurant and tell them you want it medium-rare, but only want to pay for the cooking.
Maybe Ford will start selling cars directly to you tomorrow. Lol.
That is actually only the procedure for producing prototypes. Not how actual production is done.
I got into watches around middle school and started by wearing $8 Walmart watches. After a few years of this my mom got me a MVMT watch for Christmas. It was a big step up for me at the time. Slowly I got more into watches and started buying more quality brands Iike Tissot and Bulova.

True. I actually think fashion watches are a good choice as long as the desings are original.
This is the best comment about MVMT watches I've read. Agreed 💯
My first watch was a MVMT. I got it because I knew nothing about watches, needed one for work, and saw all the advertising so I thought what the heck. It led me down a rabbit hole of research and opened the watch door for me. I don't regret the purchase at all.

Not the first business to sell overpriced crap to dumb consumers solely through clever marketing and definetely not the last, especially in the fashion industry.
yeah, since 2009 Apple is doing almost the same bullshit xD (in the tech space: Apple = MVMT)

But others will buy it then look for a sidegrade or an upgrade... and boy, are they in for a treat when they find out what they've been missing.
what a mature interview, Teddy. I’ve never met you but I’m proud of you man!
Wow. Alpha M has ZERO integrity, ZERO credibility.
Shazbot Was there ever any doubt?
I still think it's respectable he sat down for the interview at all.
Shazbot he just used a consultant
please elaborate?
Everytime he says “I’m a watch slut” lol so embarrassing
"Did you hire that hitman?"
"No. I just used a consultant"
Influencers create nothing other than a portal and an opinion that is for sale. Don’t expect any of them to be worth listening to.
I mean this man might be cheating other's from their hard earned money but I gotta say he saw an opportunity to make money and the did it well.
In other words, middle man. He was about to say that and stopped himself lol
I have just come across this video and it is one of the greatest videos I have ever watched on RUclips. Fair play to Jake for agreeing to do the interview
Wow that “design guy” is just clueless as what to say... Asked what his favourite vintage watch was, he almost looked like he couldn’t even mention one
32:45 😂😂😂 “Ehhhmmmm trying to think of a key feature”
It’s brand spanking new man! And you “designed” it !!
@@annekedebruyn7797 lol i like the analogy. "Modern art" true statement.
He honestly sounded like he was missing a few brain cells, his thoughts must be in permanent slow motion.
Never trust a man with such high levels of vocal fry.
It's called opiate/opiod addiction.

This has been in my 'watch later' for too long. Since I have to #StayAtHome I finally got to watch this. Bravo.
This company was started for non watch people who couldn’t care less about the internals or quality and just needed a cheap watch to match an outfit or whatever. I don’t think it’s a bad idea.
_ jake124 problem is the price is still fairly high.
Even for people who only want a watch as a fashion accessory, theres plenty of higher quality watches at a lower price point

Great story. I'm not going to lie, it made my eyes water 😭
Spot on man. This is entry level. It isn’t meant to be viewed in the manner teddy wants to. I was extremely put off by this video
This is such a great story!
Your dad is only lucky enough you introduced him to a proper watch manufacturer
Seiko is a gateway brand.
Good job!
After this video, I am even more convinced that MVMT just gets their watches from the cheapest source and slap their logo on it.
i dont get the hate. i bought a mvmt field watch for $100 three years ago and its still ticking along on the same battery it came with. the canvas strap feels good, solid and durable. the dial is kind of plane jane but overall its been a good and reliable watch that keeps great time. ive had no problems with it.
Everything about him looks fake. Just like his watches.
Jeez.
@@SirReddit Because watches is not art until you get to the high end of the spectrum, the quality of a watch can be objectively measured.
Man, I am so appreciative of you having this conversation. Maybe some of the best insight into the people that run these fashion brands. He's a decent enough guy, but I really think he's trying to hide the fact that they really don't know much about quality control.
If you have not got the point yet ILL inlighten you MVMT is All about the money...MVMT is not about watches. And they doing pretty well.
Thank god i never get ads for MVMT.
Unforgettable Moment 39:40 You Tell Them!
Nicely done Teddy great video!
I died laughing during the Archie segment. Even the MVMT guy went along with the joke.
Two things... #1 you need to incorporate Courtney more into your videos and #2 keep telling people to f@#k off. Awesome job Teddy.
Agree 100% with your assessment tim! Thanks for watching.
@Teej sadly, just like anything that says Apple 😆
Unbelievable. Good for you teddy. Needed to be done. High praise for your outro as well
I feel like this video should have a lot more recognition, great quality Teddy.
This video did MVMT no favors at all. Thanks Teddy for keeping true.

Hilarious Ending! Well done 👍
The comical dispute at the end revealed you both have thespian skills (teddy and videographer.)
Did anybody else notice the Dire Straits 'Money For Nothing' type guitar riff at the ending! Not a coincidence, I presume!! Nice one Teddy ;)
Mark Read MVMT watches received a social handout and made a capitalistic large profit from bullshitting about what they were producing.
Fashion watches serve the purpose of opening the door to the watch world so thank you MVMT for that
Hands down, the best video that you've made. The dry humor wasn't wasted a bit. Love it
I'm a watch guy through and through (why else would I be subscribed to TB) but I honestly don't get why there is so much hate towards MVMT.

Anyway, gotta respect the dude as a businessman. He found a market, played it smart, made millions of dollars, fair and square.
Why do they all seem STONED at MVMT
