- Well finally here is a comprehensive walk through of Nordhavn’s very first N51. It’s just possible her first journey will begin tonight - a three day cruise from Istanbul to Rhodes. Join Mark and Fiona as they travel back to New Zealand aboard Awanui NZ. #adventure #boat #cruise #nordhavn #nz #sailing #yacht #zatara
Just an excellent pair of videos and my first look at the Nordhavn 51. You two were great.
Thank you very much, and congratulations on your new yacht. Have safe and memorable travels.
Glad you like them!
Your camera person is a very patient person. 😆
Yip she absolutely is…love that girl!
Hi Mark, I love the Nordhavn's. Your video series is probably the best I've seen regarding detail from start to finish build. They're excellent. Good to see you all living the dream 👍
Thanks so much…lots more to come and some drama!
WoW that's a tiny salon on a 51 footer😮
Bigger than it looks and leaves a big galley and very large cockpit. It does not feel small
Wow, you have yourself a beautiful Nordhavn! Every video gets more exciting. Can’t wait to see your adventure videos.
Starts today at 3pm!
Safe seas. 😊
Thank you for the tour. Love the boat! Cheers from Brazil!!
Thanks so much we enjoyed making the videos
I like your underway video. Safe travels!
Thanks so much.
Mark seems to still have that enthusiasm we had as children. An important gift to enjoy life. As I envy you, being able to purchase such a boat, I'm also happy to see your happiness. Oh man, I love your New Zealand dialect. All the best wishes from the northern part of Europe!
always been considered a bit of a kid!! Thanks for commenting.
Great boat! I'm sure you guys are gonna have a lot of fun exploring the world on her!
Bon voyage, safe sailing.
Thankyou……stuck in Göcek with failed seals in stabilisers….usual Nordhavn though onto it straight away
Amazing boat! Thanks so much for sharing the build journey. I reckon this is about the perfect size for a cruising couple. So many great times ahead. Looking forward to seeing this in NZ at some point.
Aboutm4 or r years I reckon or at least until we just want to get home to family and sharing with friends. Hard to beat NZ for cruising. We hope to live aboard for a while even when home.
@@AwanuiNZgreat Video, I have 40ft Single engine in Havlock , I do a lot of business in Turkey, great place, I’m very intrigued in your whole experience and future trip , brilliant. Looking forward to seeing you in the Marlborough sounds , and seeing your travels, lovely boat by the way , great choice ! Thanks for the Videos 👍
Great video, and your camera assistant is excellent. You make a great team.
I love her to bits….and she knows it…family banter that’s all
Brilliant to actually see inside when complete..🎉🎉❤❤
Yip she is
Thank you for the tour. You are correct about the pilot house, seeing many other yachts, it feels like you are in an airplane cockpit. Props, dual engines
Absolutely…the gear is all there just not many knobs and dials.
Beautiful boat. So excited for you. Can’t wait to follow along on your journey. I don’t think I have seen an air compressor in an engine room before.
Yes I was surprised too
I've been looking forward to seeing this one actually built for so long. Congratulations on a beautiful boat - possibly the Goldilocks of Nordhavns suitable for a couple or very small crew.
Definitely. So manageable for two people. It is the perfect size for us.
Thanks for sharing. Its a beautiful boat
She is yes…we head off today
Really great job and entertaining.
That is the goal…don’t always get it right though
I like Nordhavens and nordhaven people. Amazing ship 👌
Thanks so muck
Wow looks beautiful. Enjoy your travels ❤️
Thank you we head off today
Great walk around vids, Mark and Renee. The standard of finish and all the nice to have stuff just great and the size of those bathrooms - wow. I got a real laugh out of your dustbuster on the bridge - it reminded me of the long hours spent "watchkeeping" at altitude, over the middle of the Pacific, watching the skipper trying to stay awake by using a soft bristle paintbrush to clear all the dust and crumbs from inflight meals and out of the little channels and crevices between radios and various other black boxes. Bon voyage to Rhodes - slow travel at 10 knots or less will beat the hell out of rushing everywhere at 500+.
Absolutely and yes reminded me of exactly the same thing. Remember seeing a Qantas engineer come on board one day and use a fine paint brush to sweep the dust around the panels….looked to me like it was being redistributed!
Absolutely great boat...congratulations, always take care and be safe...👏👏👏🍻🍻🍻🍾🫶💙
Thanks so much
Mark what a beautiful Motor Yacht you have built. I look forward to the performance numbers you report. Your videos have come a long way since that noisy car window down 2nd video I believe. Now go enjoy. Be safe in your travels.
Haha yip absolutely. Treated ourselves to mics the other day so hopefully even better
This man is SO happy. 🙂
Oh yeah
Very happy for you all. 🎉🎉
Thanks so much
Thanks for the walk thru, Mark and Renee. Lovely vessel and very roomy for its size. Great fuel consumption - but validate this with a timed reciprocal course to eliminate current assist. Looking forward to the sea trials.
I hear you. Not too much current in the Marmara Sea. First thing I want to do is see 8f anywhere accurate then fine tune
Very nice. Transatlantic range. Impressive.
It’d be interesting to see if running one engine at a time, and then alternating to balance hours, you could get your gph even lower. Running a higher load can let the engines run more efficiently, and still maintain your 7 knots.
I do really like the Nordhavn’s, but I’ve also recently discovered Berings, and am quite torn between the two. Although Bearing doesn’t build below a 62 I believe.
I do like Berings but prefer fibreglass to steel. Steel starts to rust the day it is exposed to the air. Moisture is also a potential issue. There is no shaft brake so running one engine not good for the one NOT running in that scenario. At 11-1200 rpm total consumption less than 10 LPH for 7kts so pretty impressive…yet to be verified
@@AwanuiNZ good point. If it’s not set up for that, it wouldn’t be a good idea. Absolutely. The engine would lack proper oiling in that situation.
Mark, if those numbers are accurate like you say, that’s just over 2 gallons/hour for a twin engine 51’ Nordhavn. That is remarkable. I can’t wait to hear more about your testing.
Yip…holding my breath
Congratulations on your new boat! I'm jelaous. Your daughter is a treasure.
Thank you very much!
The boat is so beautiful
She certainly is
Awesome boat and great detailed walkthrough!
Thanks a bunch!
Beautiful boat, I am happy for you.
Thanks so much
Nice video Mark and Renee!! “I was asked” to tell that it’s nice of Chris to let Renee sleep in his room 😅
Haha indeed. Cannot wait until they are both here…then watch the sparks fly!
Gorgeous boat but there are a few elements that surprise me. The salon doesn’t seem that much bigger than the 41 and there isn’t much natural light in the galley but I guess that is the compromise with pilot house. For me the midship cabin is the master and not being able to sit up in bed not something I’d expect in a 51 foot boat. Still the pilot house area with that couch and the watch berth all awesome. Going to make a great passage maker. Really looking forward to the sea trials. Thanks for sharing with us.
All valid comments. We are certainly going to try out the guest cabin. When friends on board we will need to move back as all the storage for owners is 9n master cabin
You have to pour the beer into beer glasses so that it foams a little and can breathe.
Beer straight from the bottle doesn't give the flavor its full potential 👍🏻
Absolutely…out of a can in particular is crap
It’s about time I’ve had to wait since yesterday. Don’t you understand we live in an immediate gratification world
Oh yeah I do…felt a 1hr10 video would lose people…..got to build anticipation!
What a beautiful boat and detailed tour. It's a perfect size for you and Fiona and guests. The finish detail is impressive. Did you have any customization or is it all included? I think I would take the mid-cabin. Congratulations to you and your family. Your tour will help Nordhavn to sell more 51s!
Production built with no options other than day head which we took
Once again a great video Mark. You and Renee form a great parody show. Makes for easy listening /watching.
The boat is amazing. Great value for money.
As you say a lot to learn about the engines but no problem for a 62 year old brain.
Haha thanks David. Cringed a bit when I watched it. Felt a bit dismissive of Renee which was not intended. We bounce off each other and give each other a fair amount of stick
No worries Mark. This is exactly how I interact with my 4 kids. You guys doing a great job. @@AwanuiNZ
Looks epic! Might be a good idea to invest in a label maker for the engine room and go through labelling as many things as you can!
Yip that’s on the list for sure
Another good one mate, thanks.👍👍
No worries pleased you enjoyed it
Superb video again and love the commentary.
Ta we do our best and try not to edit too much…wait for first docking attempt!
I think I spotted a Vesper Cortex system on the bridge - a great example of New Zealand innovation (sold to Garmin in 2022). I suggest adding a corded handset to the bridge so a) it’s always powered and b) doesn’t get lost. As a future video suggestion - how about a rundown on the tools and spares you will set up for your voyaging?
You can use the unwired handset in the saloon or cabin.
Yip great suggestion re video. The Vesper is amazing, simple but with so many intuitive features. I am getting to know it now. I will reach out to Vesper soon. We deliberately chose the cordless as I find cords a nuisance on in and around the steering station. It charges in the docking station so no worries there. The fly ridge has a corded Vesper and I already find that a nuisance
Great videos and love the commentary. You have a great opportunity and lovely boat. Enjoy your retirement. Cheers, Strachan Crang
Thanks so much for the reach out. We feel very privileged…..lots of learning ahead of us
What an AWESOME Nordhavn! Thanks for the tour... going forward, feel free to always be cameraman, and René should always be the RUclips host! Very well spoken and extremely Nordhavn knowledgeable!
How tall are you, Mark?
trying to gage the overhead heights
Haha I thought she did a much better job of filming! I used to be 6’ now likely 5.10’ or 11
For the past year or so, I have looked at the 475. @@AwanuiNZ I am 5'6" and you're much taller. That 51 looks perfect. It feels larger than I thought, on the drawings. Great to truly see it for real, finally.
Fantastic looking boat, Looking forward to seeing how she goes. Couple of questions, What is the range Nordhavn have stated, and secondly, (Sorry for being nosey) what did this cost.
Advertised range of 3,000nm….should eat that at 6 or 6.5kts, we shall see. A little under $1.5m US
Thank you.@@AwanuiNZ
Travel safe! Cant wait to see the footage of your trip.
Yip it has started…watch this soace
Beautiful vessel. Can you share with us the build time from signing of contract until complete turnover?
Yip we signed in early 2020 so four years…Covid of course and it did have an impact even in Turkey. It’s weird but the supply chain has still not recovered for some reason. Not saying it’s Covid but since then it has been much more difficult and seems to be the continuing excuse from suppliers
Presumably still make motor sailers for the ultimate in efficiency with that. Interesting World "Nordhavn" to go with so many others of course Serene comes to mind. Some amazingly great RUclips channels using Nordhavn so no shortage of resources to help along in what used to be quite the lonely journey really. #that_was_a_priceless_steinway
Yip agree
you are excited like a little boy in a toy shop and so you should be well worth the wait and I know you will make it your own well done
Thanks so much…Imdo try to control it
Vraiment super , bravo pour votre navire, merci de nous faire vivre cette expérience en live
No worries we enjoy making the videos and sharing them.
I love having a Day head!!!!❤
Absolutely…..means the cabins are there for those staying
First off, great job Renee keeping your dad on point! Nice looking boat- best wishes for you and the family as you travel on it. I am new to the channel,so I am not sure of where you will be traveling with it, but the one thing that surprised me was there were no screens on the doors. That is one thing I would have liked, never know what the bug situation is in other ports. A little disappointed that there is no small window in the engine room door so you can see what is going on before you open the door, as I have seen on other Nordhavn’s.
I hear you on all counts….engine room has a kink in it so there would not be a full view but would I think have been useful. Also screens on the doors would be good…maybe we can get something retrofitted
I've watched the whole video without fastforwarding. I have a little suggestion that you can easily ask an engineer from the factory to make the hatch of washer and drier open in opposite direction, which would be seemingly more convenient.
I love it the way it is as it makes it easy to transfer clothes from one to the other!
If you turn both them to the otherside you can still do that, facing the aft. @@FionaRammell
I certainly had not thought of that…way above my pay grade!
Wonderful yacht - Was wondering if there was a backup auto pilot? In addition, with the hydraulics running off the starboard engine pto what is the backup plan for the hydraulic system when the engine goes down?
Back up is me and we only lose stabilisers I think…..still learning
Hahahaha! That dust blower though..... 🤣🤣🤣🤣
indeed
Thanks for the tour. What was the most prevalent reason for choosing this model? Size, price, etc.
Certainly the size given there will mostly be only the two of us and also we are living aboard so did want as much room as we could manage. Price was important we could afford this….just……so any bigger would not have been feasible
Outstanding and honest videos, wonderful, wish you the very best and will be following with interest
Thanks so much…..you get what you see
Ya i agree that salon table needs a redesign, seems an after thought
Easy fix along the way. Be interesting to see how that area develops over time
Lovely boat. Have you worked out what the screaming light is for yet?!
Sorry I don’t understand?
What a fantastic video, nice work! We'll keep an eye out for Awanui in NZ waters (we're Wellington based)
Please do!
Great video. Just one thing - are you sure the master bedroom is at the bow? Usually the master/owner cabin is at the rear because it and the ensuite are bigger.
Yip much more room particularly storage…we can move around the cabins if we need to
The space under the beds is great for luggage for guests.
Yes and very roomy
just subscribed
Love videos and ship . Good luck with her
Thanks so much Robert…great to have you onboard
Super bateau merci pour la visite
You are so welcome
Very nice boat.....
Many thanks
Is an awesome bit of machinery
Oh yes you got that right
Nice boat
Indeed
I've seen some tours of the N41s which come from the same factory. But am I the only one that feels the fit and finish on N51 is just on another level?
I'm not saying N41 is not good enough but N51 is just better.
Honestly they finish all their boats to an exceptional level. I think it is just that there is more boat so it stands out more. From the factory perspective they use exactly the same techniques on the 51 as they do on the 41 so to them the quality of build was going to be just as good as Hull 33 on the 41. They absolutely pay attention to every detail and are so proud of their workmanship
It might be that there are more woodwork on 51 simply because you have the room to put them on your 51.😅@@AwanuiNZ
Great tour, beautiful boat. Will be perfect for the long passages you have planned (talking about the great loop).
Just a tip, if you want to prevent problems with the toilet, do as they do in Turkey, no paper in the toilet. Just put a small garbabe can next to the toilet, that is where all the paper goes. Have to get used to it, but the last thing you want is to take apart the toilet when you are out at sea. Also, before flushing fill up that bowl with a lot of water, it will save your macerator.
Remember; no toilet on board and you will be very unhappy !😀
Btw, what is the reason for using the guest cabin as the main cabin ? Most people don't like the noise of the waves in the forward cabin and on top of that the vertical movement in the forward cabin is substantially more than the cabin in the center of the boat. Any particular reason ?
As for the small space in the forward cabin ? Don't worry, women always come up with something to store there. Don't ask how, just accept it. 😅
Good morning….yip wifey has gone to that process but not me yet. Still thinking about it after the same process for 62 years! Bigger cabin with much more storage. We tried the mid ships cabin and other than ride at sea love the forward cabin. The view through the windows from bed and close access to pilot house are too good. Maybe on a long passage we will change.
Nice vessel Mark, have you ever disclosed the cost of such a fine craft, when do you arrive back in New Zealand?
Little less than $1.5m US. Maybe 4 or 5 years but will go home each year for a month or so.
Beautiful boat question tender water maker spares what and why non boat person asking 🇬🇧👍
Sorry not,sure I understand?
great boot
Thankyou
Personally I'd swap the names of the vip guest and master cabin. Guest room looked much nicer and not sure how noisy the master will be underway at the front of the boat with all the waves hitting it...
Yes you are correct. It is noisy and you feel like you are in a roller coaster! Fun though!
Even if we swapped cabins if we were underway doing a crossing with friends I would want them to have the best experience and be in the mid ship cabin!
It is a bit bumpy up front but hey I can sleep anywhere. I think we may move to the mid cabin if we have a really extended period on our own. Storage in master is so good so with guests aboard we need to be there otherwise we would be continuously moving things around to accomodate them. The ride in the midship cabin is amazing!
interesting comparing the differences to my 475. a little more room as expected. good use of space and more modern look interior. seems much nicer than the 41. congrats
The color scheme and texture are the same as N41, the scale is just increased. Another thing is that the N41 looks like a parody of Nordhavn
I love the 475…..got that classic Nordhavn look
Very nice Nordhavn
Oh yeah
Lovely boat! Perfect size and a good amount of storage. The one thing I've never understood about most boats is the saloon TV location, why put it behind where most people seat and only 2 can watch? I love sports, my family and friends do too and we are always watching something so, for me, havind it behind the main seating area makes no sense.
Just no where else. Perfect for the live aboard couple. I hear you on a sports event
A bundle of dosh for a cramped boat. In the old days these were somewhat more roomy.
Not sure I agree with that. We had a share in a 60’ Salthouse built in 1979….I reckon this boat has the same if not more room, certainly more volume.
Can you enlighten me on the sea trial? What important parameters to look when do sea trials? And any other auxiliiary parameters? Thanks.
Video coming out
10:20 the same weird thing i noticed with the electric kettle - it won't boil water until it's plugged in 🤔
Haha…great sense of humour….Renee loved getting me on that one
Superb boat and video
Thanks for your support
NICE !, just a little safety remark, all hanging and vertical cables need a metal ty wraps ( cable binder ) in case of fire , vertical 3 feet and horizontal 2 feet spacing.
I would advise this on every yacht .
Thank you…great tip
Looking awesome . Storage in all sorts of little places . Cool .
Youv answered a couple of questions for me as to whether you had a fuel polishing sustem . Im guessing standard on yachts built over there .
And the type of engines.
How much fuel and the range are the other 2 questions . . .
As a kid i went from Auckland to London return . ..this was in 67 . . Through the Panama canal . . Are you heading through there ? . .
I mentioned your chanel on Aquaholic . So you mite get a few extra views . . . Nordhavn execs know Nick from Aquaholic they are inmpressed with the views he gets . . Last Nordhavn he viewd 3wks ago is now at over 220k views . . Great addvertising for Nordhavn . You would be an awesome meet the owner guest . .
Realy enjoying this adventure your on . .
Till the next time . . Take care .
Bye from NZ 👍🍻🇳🇿💐
5400 litres with advertised 3,000nm +. Hey what ship did you go on through the Panama? I went through in 67 as well
@@AwanuiNZ we left nz in 67 on the Rangitoto and came back in 68 on the Rangitane . . . Was 7 when we went over 8 when coming back . . Im 64 . . .
We went on Northern Star and came back on Southern Cross….62
The Webasto heater....it's not using that much fuel. $3/hr is waaay too high. A gallon per 24 hours is more like it. Be sure to get some rebuild parts to carry with you. Gaskets, igniter, that sort of thing. It's easy to rebuild but if you don't have parts, you're screwed. Butler-Technik in England has great service and world-wide shipping. I needed to rebuild mine at the 5 year mark.
Wow are you sure? I read the manual and got another number?
BeautifuI probably missed it, but what is the draft ?
1.6m
boat quality feels amazing. I'd like a bit more light in the cabins and heads but well I guess you can't have a tank-solid boat AND a lot of glass
Lights are great and with them on it looks amazing!
Yes you do need the lights on as soon as daylight starts going and agree not everything is possible
You can add the voice command module to your Garmin screens - contact Garmin . It’s not expensive
Garmin Australia 🇦🇺
Did not know that
Is there a reason the handles on the upper fridges are in different locations… I think maybe an oversight.
Just to be a pain in the arse I think!
@@AwanuiNZ great channel By the Way!we are currently looking for a used Nordhavn .
I'm thinking if you drink your beer out of a glass as opposed to a stubbie then you may have tremors drinking tinnies.
I too drink from a glass when and where I can. 900g MT Vegemite containers make excellent drinking jars........not sure if Marmite goes that big.....if it doesn't, then it should!!!!
Finally someone who understands!
Enjoying the videos! What's the five year float plan? How far are you taking this little adventure?
Wanting to bring the boat all the way back to New Zealand. So however long that takes!
Yip….via Mediterranean, Portuguese coast, England. Ireland, Scotland, Netherlands, maybe Norway, Iceland, Greenland, Novia Scotia, east coast USA, Panama then who knows where!
Happy for you guys. I'm looking forward to the adventure as well! @@AwanuiNZ
what was the lead time to actually get her built
2 years
The girl should do the tour of the boat this old goat is completely lost !!
Haha
Hidden tensions in the air at 6 mins... Apologies owed!!!
Hope not
Is there a Fresh water maker? I didn’t see one
It comes after production and additional cost. Plumbed and wired for it. We get ours fitted in Bodrum, Turkey in a couple of weeks. There will be a video on it
Laundry underway? Might be a tad noisy.
Nope washing machine and dryer both have an A rating for efficiency and are very quiet. Love my laundry. Doing two loads today.
Correct Fiona is so focused on the noise from the washing machine she completely missed the engine noise!
Why are the two refrigerator handles in different locations??
Good question. The second has been installed as it’s an ocean going vessel. So assume it’s there for safety that it’s not easy to open. That’s my thought. Will ask Nordhavn!!
Bloody good question!!
Not that I expect it will get watched much, but wouldn’t the TV be better on the port side so the settee could be used to watch it?
Possibly. I think the idea was to be opposite the two individual chairs. With three tv’s and Starlink I am sure people will find a spot!
If you expect to spend any meaningful time running from the fly bridge, why wouldn’t you equip the upper helm , as you’ve done in the pilot house, with a Stidd helm chair ? The difference between Stidd and what I believe is a basic Pompanette is significant. After spending no doubt a substantial amount to build such a special yacht, a few thousand more to upgrade to Stidd seems like a worthwhile investment.
Will test it out and see what I think
never got to see the outside of the Awanui
Suggest you subscribe to this channel and view the many videos of the exterior filmed during the production of this vessel.
Video coming promise
Nice boat BUT, "they're not STUPID, they can see that".... Oops, your let your cruelty slip out in a video.
Yeah, based off that I don’t plan to watch their videos beyond the walkthroughs.
Ouch that hurts…….no intention to be cruel. Renee and I bounce off each other. Trying to show the story warts and all. Lame attempt to be sarcastic.
They are just joking around! Friendly Kiwi banter 😄. Appreciate the videos.
Just the usual banter between my father and I! We are constantly having each other on and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Can’t take life too seriously all the time
lovely lady, wishing you guys lots of safe miles on her. One thing is absolutely wrong! An EPIRB NEEDS TO BE FREE FLOATING. In case of sinking, it will never float up as it is locked inside the boat. Many yachtsmen make this error. EPIRB needs to be on the outside that's why it is watertight.
Funny I don’t agree…I would far rather take it with me and know it is on or not rather than hope it came free from the boat and started. Make no mistake this will go with me in the life raft. Be really interested in others comments on this. Simple answer of course is have one of each!
Winnebago vibes.
Yip
