I hate how that guy tried to compare human animal suffering with non human animal suffering. Human suffering pales in comparison to non human suffering.
Thank you for keeping the fight for animal rights going, Joey Carbstrong. You, Natasha Peterson, Earthling Ed, Lifting Vegan Logic, and Vegan Gaze are among some of my favorite animal rights activists. You guys are leading the charge for animal liberation. They won't be able to stop us.

When you get old enough you see that people you come across just try to do the bare minimum and get away with as much as they think no one will ever notice. Most people like to put on the image of being a good person while trying to get away with as many nasty things as long as no one ever finds out.

This whole argument would have been avoided if he'd stated he'd bought his phone second hand, thus not supporting the continued mining of coltan. People use this excuse to say that electric cars are less carbon efficient, but the C02 necessary just to produce 1 litre of gasoline before being sold, is equivalent to the offset of going 20 miles in an electric car.
I think people need to start combining these issues together some more. I know many people are apathetic about the environment within their own doubltethink, but things like the fact that a single cows methane emissions are equivalent to the carbon emissions created by the average UK home over 3 weeks, might give people more pause about the whole 'buy local' myth, when trasportation of animals accounts for 0.5% of their net C02 emissions.
People will always come at vegans with similar tactics, and they get more sophisticated and nuanced through the conflation of ethical veganism and other less laudable reasons like personal health etc.
      Heres some quickies,
80% of soya grown is used to feed livestock anyway, so going vegan still means on average you're responsible for less consumption of soya.
Only 0.16% of fruit and veg is imported via aviation, and 35% of beef is imported anyway into the UK.
To make 1kg of beef, 60kg of C02 emissions are created, and the average cow is around 720kg, compared to the highest vegan C)2 offset item being olive oil at 1.5kg per 1 kg produced and rice at 1.6-1kg.
Aviation each year accounts for only 2% of carbon emissions globally, whereas animal agriculture alone is conservatively estimated at 14%.
All of the crops required to feed livestock requires deforestation and disruption to natural fauna, making animal agriculture extremely deleterious for biodiversity.
Humans make around 0.5-2 litres of methane a day, compared to 250-500 from cows(if people make the farting argument) and methane is 80x more 'potent' as a greenhouse gas than C02.
The carbon cost to create an electric car battery(which lasts 3-4x longer than a regular car battery) is equivalent to the average emissions from running a diesel car for 2+1/2 years, and most people own cars from typically 9.7-11.4 years. Electric cars are simply and obviously better for the earth.
Don't get me wrong, I went vegan for the animals 3 years ago and wont go back. But intelligent people always have ways round to create casuistry, so giving them straightup facts and then getting into the empathic reasons to go vegan, I've found to be more fruitful and garners further conversation.

The Congo phone argument is similar to like, hey a million people die from car crashes every year, so if you own a car you vaguely contribute to human deaths, so I can kill and eat 1 animal a day by directly buying their flesh.
There is benefit to finding the value in these things. Perhaps the real solution to the Congo thing would be every time we buy a phone, donate 5% of the value you pay, to a charity that gives money, food or healthcare to the workers of Congo. Thay would do so much more good than not buying a phone. However not buying a chicken directly means a chicken doesn't need to be killed to replace it on the shelf.

Meat production is not just an issue of supply and demand, it's a result of political decisions. Consumers alone are not going to eliminate meat production as long as there is a political push for these products via subsidies, regulations and buybacks. Vegan activists need to be in the congress, lobbying for change in what is prioritized as food stapples and production of which foods requires the subsidies. The thruth is that a lot of these industries haven't been profitable for a long time and rely on the govt and market manipulation for profit, that veil needs to be ripped off. Animal products are not efficient, affordable staples, that's the biggest lie and a false construct of our food supply. This is the first issue that need to be tackled on the political arena. Vegans, step up.

You not being vegan is not gonna help Congolese or whoever! You can choose right here right this moment to stop enabling the atrocities done to farmed animals. Yes smartphones are bad--child labour, toxic wastes, etc. And you can minimize your impact by buying secondhand, if you still intend to participate in society digitally. Anyway, I think comparing atrocities is irrelevant and not productive at all. Just acknowledge human right violation in wherever is bad and will do everything in your power to help and move on.
I feel like this has been stated a million times, but i'll say it again: Not eating chicken is NOT valuing a chicken's life more than a human's; it's valuing a chicken's life more than a f*king meal!

You are so right. Becoming a vegan means really holding up a mirror to yourself and asking that big question: are you happy being a hypocrite? It's a massive pivot for most people for three reasons, and I include myself here: 1) meat, chicken and fish taste unbelievably good, for most people; 2) having to give up something so delicious makes us resentful; 3) when we realise this resentment is actually directed inwards it makes us angry toward the person who made us feel this way. How many smokers voluntarily quit smoking? It usually takes a doctor reading you your last rites before you realise you have to quit the thing that gives you so much pleasure. Same with quitting meat. In this case, people like Joey and Ed are the doctor. It's no mean feat quitting meat!

    • @zoemoskal9700
      @zoemoskal9700 Год назад

@@girlplanetboy so true. Well said! I was not a big meat eater before becoming vegan - only had meat a couple of tines per week and did include lots of vegan options in my diet, plus only had plant milk. But every time I’ve eaten meat for years now it has played on my conscience more and more. I have a vegan friend who was sometimes a bit “guilt trippy” about me eating meat and I 100% agreed with her views, and wanted to defend her in social situations, and yet I wasn’t practicing what my inner morals were telling me, essentially making me a hypocrite, and I resented her when she’d kinda drop things into the conversation to make me feel bad - or so I saw it at the time. But in reality I was just resenting myself and holding that resentment and anger inward, because I knew it was wrong. So this veganuary I decided to go for it, and watched a ton of documentaries about all aspects of veganism along with loads of Joey’s and Ed’s debates (also read Ed’s book) and there’s no going back now. The veil of cognitive dissonance is fully broken. I can’t be a hypocrite anymore and be an “animal lover” who’s complicit in those barbaric industries. There are so many great alternatives now too… I know I have no excuse. None of us do. Yes I do miss meat a bit, and still have cravings for cheese…but a moment on our lips is a lifetime of suffering for innocent beings. I feel freer knowing nothing I consume causes pain for them. I now understand why my friend chose to speak up about it and it was largely because of her that I did this and educated myself on all this. She’s delighted that I’ve become vegan. As Ed says… we are on the right side of history 💚🌱

Currently on the market there is only one phone that is ethical and thats the Fairphone 4. I'm currently looking into it and it's definetly not a top tier phone but it's of respectable performance. I think I'm going to replace mine to that one so nobody can tell me that my phone is unethical haha.

The woman is enjoying trying to be the 'white saviour' during this whole exchange. She doesn't actually express her view on the topic they are discussing, she's just adding to the aggro whilst pretending to be the 'peace keeper' telling them they shouldn't be arguing which one is worse. Joey was trying to express the moral differences which he still did very well over her rambling. Great work Joey, another articulate debate in tribute to these exploited beings 👏🏼

hey joey, great work! i find a good question is "can an iphone be made without without causing unnecessary violence to others?" the answer is yes. then ask "can animal products be made without causing unnecessary violence to others?" the answer is no. then just explain that veganism is about not contributing to things that you know will cause direct violence and that you cannot reasonably control the indirect violence you may cause. if a product can be made without causing violence then we have to trust the manufacturer/supplier to do it in that way. the same way that we have to trust the government to do the right things with our taxes and we cannot control if they use our money to invade countries or anything like that.

Who shall I write a letter to? And how can I possibly make amends for something that happened before I was born and certainly wasn’t consulted beforehand?

Plants don't have pain receptors... Case closed... When plants react to sunlight that doesn't mean it feels the same a sentient creature does. It doesn't even get out of danger if something is in it's way, like being stomped up or catching on fire. Unlike plants, Sentient creatures have developed an entire neurvous system in order to protect themselves from danger and that is the reason why they feel fear and pain! How would you feel if a cannibal is preparing you to be slaughtered so that he may eat you up later?! You would feel genuine fear right?! Even if in the cannibal's mind, that he will try to slaughter you as merciful as he can, would you still willingly want to be his dinner?! God... have some empathy for your fellow sentient beings...

I think it wasn't good to get into the whole Kongo workers discussion. Less well informed and getting away from the subject of veganism. It gave the people the feeling, that they were right. Also, i think it's dangerous to say that one problem is worse than the other. I believe it's best to respect every problem on its own. Doesn't mean you can't help one of the problem, by being vegan
