    Forgive me for saying this because all iterations of Phantom are equally as impressive in their own ways, but this is the best they've sounded in years and it couldn't make me any happier.

    There are few things as wonderful as a perfect release from 70 or so brass at fff. Secondly, why has Phantom been able to generate so many of the best on field conductors over the years? I can still see Marcia Hansen (sorry if I messed up the name, I never met her, just watched her conduct all year in 1984 while I was touring with another corps) bringing more out of the 84 Phantom corps than I thought possible. Great tradition. Let's hope the activity gets back on its feet in the next year… hell, let's hope our society… our PLANET even gets back on our collective feet, but in any case on that night in Indiana, these kids paid homage to a great organization, a great tradition, a lasting part of a great activity, and did the activity and themselves proud.

      Phantom auditions conductors, most corps select drum majors from veteran members.

      @@rossvistamail Thanks. I think I may have been so blown away by their conductor in 84 that I projected that skill to all Phantom conductors (who are all very good, not taking anything away). I hope I have her name right, Marcia? She had the poise and musicianship, and the ability to enhance the performance of all the members on the field that I've only seen once or twice (George Parks springs to mind) in the activity. I'm not sure you're right about other corps, though. The corps I've worked with auditioned based on conducting skill and produced some fine drum majors. Garfield, (with whom I never worked) selected Michael Klesch if I remember correctly, who was not a brass player in the corps. I don't think Phantom is unique, just successful. But thank you for the thoughtful response. And you may be more right than I am. I'm old and don't get up close much any more. btw, I always assumed I would see Ms. Hansen's name as musical director of a symphony orchestra by now. Any of you Phantomites know where her career arc took her?

    I have loved Phantom from the time I first saw them in 1975 when I marched with Guardsmen (a corps also from Illinois) That deep, rich, powerful sound in every decade! Thank to the corps members now and in the past. A Phantom t shirt I bought in 1991 says it .."Phantom. The best reason to march drum corps" To me Phantom is also the best reason yo watch drum corps. My very best to Phantom for a great 2023 season! SUTA!!!! 🎉❤😊

    Just the last bars of an Epic piece and really MAD about this. The span between a ppp and an fff could have been more, also the tempo variations have nothing in common with Wagners Lohengrin and the last movenent of the 2nd scene. Why treat great classic pieces not with that reverence and take the given tempi as of Mr. Wagner instructed?

    • @archangel9622

      Because it’s an arrangement. And phantom is not messing with the corps song they’ve been playing for 70 years

    • @snail415
      @snail415 Год назад +4

      Good lord. Even if you know how you feel, I’d ask you to get up, walk out to the back yard and stand at attention for an hour. There are far better things to be that bent about.
      I can’t ever recall a time on the field in my marching days where I had a choice on what I played. Thank goodness there was no internet or social media then for me to stumble-across, to then then read such a comment.
      The idea of an adult sharing in a public forum how upset what is being played makes him (let alone from PR) irks me. Just pick up the phone and call the directors.
      My point- As dumb as my response is, it’s only a response because of what was shared in the first place.

    • @phillyphakename1255
      @phillyphakename1255 Год назад +2

      Yeah, nah. It is an arrangement of a classic piece for a marching band. You gotta take a 10 minute song at best, sometimes even a hour and a half symphony, and condense it down to fit a two minute movement. You can either up the tempo, or you can cut more of the music, but you can't get a true faithful representation of the original.
      To an extent, I agree. Taking it 5 clicks slower would have made for a more impactful punch. Maybe a little different arrangement too.
      But at the end of the day, it's now a corps song. It's been played by them for 45 years. It isn't Wagner's music anymore, not to the people playing it or listening to it, it is instead belonging to the corps itself.
      The performance is designed to remind people of when they performed that same song in the 1980s. It's designed to inspire young kids at the awe and power of a drum corps. It's designed to create community between all who have ever been affiliated with the corps. It does those things, no matter the tempo or faithfulness to Wagner.

    as good as phantom regiment makes elsas procession sound, the song really should stay as a concert arrangement. I feel as too much is cut when it is converted to a marching arrangement. the song is supposed to be a long slow buildup into an emotional arrival point

    • @scotashton766
      @scotashton766 Месяц назад

      I sort of agree with you, but not totally. If they can do this in a post concert venue, then it would be wonderful to see one side with the left leg out the other side with the right leg out and the flags hoisted high on that last note. … the visual symmetry with the climax of the phrase and the brass and the drum rolling would be extraordinary. Moreover, I repeat to the second portion where the chromatics begin, and then do the last eight measures the last phrasing as such as a coda, bigger, boulder, slower, deep, and middle brass extraordinary….. I at the 2024 championships phantom has so much passion they were the first ones to have the entire middle section of the stadium irrupt any Normas applause that is spontaneous collective standing ovation. Yes, they were good course before them, but Phantom clearly made it noteworthy that the big boys were here and they played with fervor. !!!
