This is a tough situation to address. Indycar should have worded their reply better. The failure in the suspension happened in a location that the tether was never designed to address. These race cars have special failure zones so the suspensions do not spear through the car and stab the drivers in the body like happened to James Hinchcliffe in 2015 at Indy in a practice crash. That was a profoundly awful and terrifying crash that James very narrowly survived because of the amazing work of the Indy safety crews and the medical teams afterwards. Let's give a thanks to God in there too. So there has to be give and release to those car body parts. Also, they cannot fly back at the driver and hit them in helmet like happened to Ayrton Senna in 1994 which killed him. Indycar is actually better positioned than Formula One to stop that from ever happening with the full ballistic windshield protecting the drivers head and face now. This gets interesting now. That was about a 210 mph impact into a car with locked brakes and tires sliding backwards at 100 mph. The drivers cannot just lift off the gas when they are in the corners. The forces in that impact were astounding. One thing to think of is, had that suspension member not failed and the entire car lifted up, the entire car could have gone into the catch fence or potentially into the crowd. So you can't just tie everything together aimlessly. The solution to this problem will take a hell of alot of study and testing. Indycar has the right people for the job.

There is no engineering solution to this 1 in 10,000 failure Phil. Physics will not allow a rotating wheel to be "tethered".
Even wheel covers would not work every time.
If you want to make auto racing 100% failure proof - nobody could afford to build the car.
Motor racing is dangerous - it says so on the fine print on the back of your ticket.
You attend the race at your own risk. The lawyers make sure of that. You can't sue the Indy 500 if your partner is killed in the stands.

only one or two bigger in lenght that arnt road coarses, maybe daytona and talladega, it is the first superspeedway and largest permanent sports stadium in the world by capacity, and its more then just a track, it has a golf course, the museum, the offices, and did you know it has a dirt track on turn three they use for a cherity race each year for a few days called bc 39 after driver that was in the 500 a few times and a well rounded openwheel driver bryan clausen its used to raise money for organ donation awareness in indiana, as he was an organ donor, but even his family did not know it till after the fact, he was kindly they say and would give you the shirt off his back, california born but called indiana home and moved here and is buried here, not far from the speedway at crown hill cemetary, I did not know him as at the time I had gotten out of racing before I got back into it but the racers I talked to in the pits that did had nothing but good things to say, also there are all kinds of engine and car building faclities as well as on the outside right corner the offices of usac are, they used to sanction the 500 and champ car trail, and really the oldest continual open wheel sanctioning body in the usa though they formed out of where AAA left off after desasters at le monds I belive or somewhere in europe monza maybe where people were killed usac was born in indy out of that.
but yea indy is one of the largest and fastest and host to several events every year including the 500 festival, its the grand mecca and vatican of racing, too bad the people at the state fair did not feel the same, as the mile track there was where they raced cars off and on even longer then the indy motor speedway actually it was there that the idea was came up with to build the racetrack when watching a race at the indiana state fair and where the first sub minute mile was done in 1903 june 29th by Barny Oldfield from wassion ohio, too bad they feel gambling and harness racing is more importent as they did not even save the inner half mile for dirt racing and put the whole thing under crushed limestone making it suitable only for harness horse racing and training and parking at the state fair, and while its a big thing among the farmers and amish for harness racing, they slapped 120 years of history in the face they cant even run quarter horses or thoroghbreeds on it anymore with the surface change, and that was after usac pleaded with them for 2 years to keep some form of auto racing at the track, and it was only one of 4 state fair mile tracks left and only one of three that had car racing on them.
Just felt you should be aware, maybe get enough people to clammor and bring it back or get them to build another big dirt track thats at least a half mile in or around indy where they can run the usac silver crown cars which are decendents of the dirt cars and watson roadsters that were part of the indy champ car circuit for soo many decades, when the cars were still front engined before being suppanted by the mid engine cars of the 60's, and the hoosier hundred was the crown jewel event of the champ dirt car races second in prestige to win second only to the indy 500 itself back then, and many would love if we could get it back on dirt the drivers know this is born to be and is truely ment to be a large dirt track race, the fans of the series know it, and the heads of usac know this fact
I just thought I would make you all aware.
still that was scary those cars are 230 + at top speed, but yea its not without risk, even behind a catch fence in low rows cars can and have gone over catch fences, thrown debris, or knocked down catch fences, or broke them loose as was the case at voluse when a car flat spined and knowed the posts right out of the cement of the wall or where a sprint car hit right in the middle of a gap in the fence and broke the roll cage right in two on a sprint car last weekend actually in justin pecks sprintcar hes from monrovia indiana just south of indy, then there was justin owen rest his soul, went out for qualifying at laranceburg and the car did not slide when he wanted it to and it biked up on two wheels and lauched it into the fence spinning and he came down like a lawn dart into the track there and died from his injuries same weekend of the bristol dirt race, and he was the defending track champ there in wingless sprint cars he knew the track well. 26 years old and met our Lord the day before easter this year

Instead of Indy Car's statement acting so proud that the "tether didn't fail", they need to state what piece DID fail. Because clearly, SOME part of the vehicle failed. Any time a wheel and wheel assembly goes flying at 200mph above a grandstand, it's safe to say, some piece of that car is vulnerable to releasing the entire wheel and wheel assembly at high speed if damaged in an impact. They need to clarify what piece of the car was damaged to allow this to happen, and how to avoid it happening again.
